Accessing  external harddrives wirelessly

How could I go about to access external hardrives wirelessly with my ibook G4?
ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You need to connect these external hard drives to the network. Possibilities:
- cable them to another computer on your LAN, and make the contents shareable
- if these are USB interface drives, several manufacturers sell adapters specifically designed to turn a USB-interface hard drive into a "network attached storage" device.

  • Cannot access external harddrive

I don't know if this is the right forum. I have copied 750Gb of data from my Macbook Pro to a partition on an external harddrive (WD MyBook). It is formatted as Mac OS extended (Journaled). After that I have used the partition as an airdisk to backup. Now when I connect it to my Macbook Pro USB port it gives me an error saying something like "the reference "xxx" could not be opened because the original item can not be found" (maybe not exactly like that because I'm on a danish Macbook.
I have checked for error on the hard disc using Drive Utility, but it reports no faults.
The same thing happened to me some weeks ago. Back then I reformatted my drive. But I hope there is a way that I can fix this without loosing my backup? Any suggestions? And what can do so this will not happen again? I would hate not to be able to back up my data.

Does it have either the GUID or APM *Partition Map Scheme?*

With Time Machine? If so, the backups are in a +sparse bundle.+

Try repairing the sparse bundle via Disk Utility.

First, if you have both Time Machine backups and other data in the same partition, that's going to be a problem, sooner or later. See #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Second, Time Machine stores it's backups differently when they're done locally vs. over a network. Network backups are in a +sparse bundle;+ local ones are in a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the volume. Even if you're able to repair the sparse bundle, Time Machine may not continue backing-up to it. And you won't be able to see those backups normally, either. You'll have to manually mount the sparse bundle, then use the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in the FAQ Tip.

  • Unable to access external harddrive due to SecureHD Login issues

I have a similar situation as discussed in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/10125458.  However, a solution was not reached.  Can anyone help?  I need to get some important information off of the hard drive.

I found my solution the hard way and reloaded my old OS to access the hard drive and remove the security on it.

  • Wireless External Harddrive?

I use a 17'' powerbook w/ tiger and have a firewire/usb 2.0 maxtor external harddrive. Is there any way to access this hard drive wirelessly? I have scoured the internet in search of products for this purpose and could only find the Linksys, but that uses a proprietary hard drive format and does not work w/ macs, as it does not support os x extended partitions.
Worst case, could I do this with a LAN hard drive w/ the airport express?
Any help, specifically links to products that can accomplish this, would be extremenly appreciated.

Take a look at the D-Link DNS-G120. It support FAT32 and NTFS formats. Again, no mention of direct support for Macs. I don't know of any adapters of this type that support drives with MacOS formatting.
You could use a LAN hard drive, and connect it to a wireless network using a wireless bridge device. An Airport Express could be used as a wireless bridge device - but only on an existing wireless network based around an Airport Extreme Base Station or another Airport Express.

  • Can I access my external harddrive if I connect it to my Airport via USB?

I have a basic router providing a wireless network and access to the internet (given by my internet provider). And then I recently bought an Airport adaptor and connected my stereo, and now I'm playing music wirelessly.
My question is then, will I be able to access my external harddrive if I connect it to my Airport via USB?
It's an Airport Express Base Station (the one with only jack, usb and ethernet)
    Thanks

Sorry but the USB port on the AirPort Express (AX) does not support USB hard drives.

  • Accessing an external harddrive through Airport Extreme

    Hello,
I have read that one should be able to access an external harddrive that is connected to a airport extreme from any computer that has the internet.
    Is this true?
How does one find the Internet address?
    Regards,
    Jon

    Anybody got any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Jon

  • Not able to access my iPhoto library from external harddrive

I get this message when I attempt to access my iphoto Library from my LeCie external hard drive.  "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I'm nervous to do as instructed for fear of deleting my photos from the external harddrive.

What format is the external drive? Has the iPhoto library been working on the external drive in the past? What recently changed? what ahppened when you tried
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again.

  • Problem accessing Seagate External Harddrive from iMac and Mac Book Air

I have a brand new Seagate 2TB external harddrive which I have just used to backup my entire iMac files (photos, videos, etc) via the Time Capsule programme. However I now can't access the files which apparently have been copied onto the Segate. I have now connected the Seagate to my Mac Book Air and it is not even being recognised as an external storage device.
Is someone able to tell me how I can access the files on the external drive?

do you mean "time machine" as opposed to "time capsule" the latter is a back up drive in itself.
before you did your backup was your seagate drive formatted or did you just connect and instruct the mac to back up to the drive.
if the drive was not formatted then you will need to format the drive using disc utility.

  • I can't Access my External Harddrive.. Please Help

OS = Vista on a PC
I have a WD External Harddrive, that I Can't access. It is a plug in Harddrive (self Powered)
If i open "Airport Utility" on the left side it will show the unit. I double click on it. It brings up a secondary window that allows me to select
    Airport
    Internet
    Printers
    Disks
    Advanced
I select Disks, and it shows the harddrive in the list. However....
I can't click on the harddrive to access it
Unless I'm doing it wrong (very possible) I can't map a network drive to it.
It's not showing up under the network tab
It's not showing up under "My Computer"
Please help I have called Apple Support and they can't figure this out. Infact they are sending me a new Unit for no reason.

It may be possible that this particular My Book model is not compatible with the AirPorts as an AirPort Disk. (ref: The iFelix unofficial 802.11n Airport Extreme Hard Drive Compatibility List) Have you contacted WD support to see if they have a newer driver or specifically call out that they are compatible? I did a quick Google-search on the terms: "AirPort My Book" and found dozens of references where folks were having hit/miss success with the My Books.

  • I can't access my itunes from my external harddrive anymore

I hope someone can provide some guidance and insight regarding the following problem:     I have an imac g5  osx 10.3.9 and I used to access my itunes library from my external harddrive (maxtor). While living overseas last year I bought a Mac Book osx 10.6.8 and initally was successful in accessing my itunes library from my maxtor external harddrive. After two weeks my Mac Book started ejecting the harddrive and I wasn't able to use it again (maybe something to do with it needing too much power. I have found many similar discussions on this).    Now I am back home and using my imac g5 again but am having problems accessing my itunes library on the external harddrive. The imac recognises the external harddrive but if I try and play a song on itunes it says it cannot be found and I have to manually direct it to the song on the external harddrive. It may play or it may freeze. I have tried to reset everything through itunes preferences but nothing changes or else everything freezes.
when I got the Mac Book I tried to set up the Time Machine and I think that is when things started going wrong with my external harddrive. I am not too computer savvy so I'm not too sure.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • How to access local files of crashed macbook pro booted thru external harddrive

I am not able to see my macbook pro local data while booting it thru external harddrive (OS X marvericks)
Note- my maching is crashed, every time I starts up my machine it starts with OS X utility window.
Alos tried disk utility bt says back up as many as files as possble and reinstall OS.

    Sahil13gupta,
while booting from your external disk, open Finder’s Preferences, select its Sidebar tab, ensure that all of its “DEVICES” checkboxes have been checked, and close the Preferences window. If your internal drive doesn’t appear among the devices shown in the Finder sidebar, then you’ll need to hire a data recovery firm to recover the data on your internal disk — note that their services tend to be expensive. Purchasing an external disk to use as a regular backup destination is much less expensive than hiring a data recovery firm.

  • ITunes Music Library on external harddrive - no access

I have ALL my music on an external harddrive. After re-installation of Windows and iTunes on my computer dure to some function errors, iTunes doesn't recognise my music: I changed the root in "preferences" to the music folder on the harddrive - but iTunes would not upload the music and I cannot find ANY command where to do so ... WHO CAN HELP? I am desperate ...

What did you copy to the external drive?
If you have an iTunes directory on the external drive, try the following:
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes, keep holding down the shift key, you should be promted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes directory on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
Without knowing exactly what you copied I can't tell if this will work, but it is worth trying.

  • Old Library on External Harddrive not recognised on new PC for iTunes

Hi, I've just bought a new pc after my old one gave up one me. I have my iTunes library saved to an external harddrive and I've changed the Library name to that of my harddrive location in Prefences>General>Library Name. I also changed The Preferences Advanced tab>iTunes Music folder location to point to the external harddrive location where my music files are and no music appears in my library. All I want is my library off my ipod to be replicated back into the itunes library as i've a lot of history here. Can it be done?

on the iMac, launch iTunes with the options key pressed. this window will appear

  • Iphone as external harddrive?

    Hello!
I have a problem with my iPhone. I want to transfer photos, videos etc, from my PC to my iPhone and back. I can only find apps to mac or apps were u need wireless connection.
Anyone know a app for iPhone PC or PC/MAC that can make my iPhone to a external harddrive? Is there any free app?
    plz help

Your phone is functioning as designed. The iPhone does not support Disk Use mode. This was a design decision by Apple (most iPods support it, but not the iPhone or iPod Touch).
3rd party apps cannot access the dock connector for data transfer, which is why all of the file transfer apps use Wi-Fi.
