Accessing External Mac Hard Drives from Windows.

i have a mac and a Windows PC. i finally networked the two together, but i can only get to my main hard drive on the mac computer from the windows pc. i was hoping i could get to my external hard drives on my mac from my windows pc. if anyone knows how to do this i would love to know. thanks!

Have a look at Sharepoints for the Mac. It should help you a lot with what you are trying to accomplish.

  • How do I access my Mac hard drive from my Windows OS?

I recently bought a MacBook Pro and had it partitioned into two hard drives, 65 gig of mac and 35 gig of windows, which will mostly be for games. However, when I am running OS X, i can explore the windows hard drive, but when I run XP, I can't explore the Mac hard drive. I turned file sharing on, so I thought I should be able to. My main reason for this question is because I moved my music to the mac side, and I want windows to be able to access it so that I dont have to store it on both sides. Thanks so much!

    Hi Josh!
If you're sharing from Mac to Windows then obviously your network connection is working fine. What happens when you try to share from Windows to Mac? Are you getting error messages?
I highly suggest using SharePoints to create the Windows shares on your Mac. Then on your Windows machine go to Start --> Run and enter something like "\\MacIPaddress\newshare".
    Hope this helps! bill

  • Accessing external firewire hard drive from Finder

I have a Lacie Porsche 250 GB firewire hard drive. The icon appears on the desktop but when I double click on it to view it's contents the finder 'blinks' and closes all open windows (including the momentarily opened hard drive window).
I can access the drive from within applications (using 'open' command, but never directly from the finder. I have visited the Lacie support site and updated the software, firmware, etc.
Very grateful for any advice on how i can get the hard drive to start behaving.

    OK ...
    Run MainMenu
    And under "Other Tasks" select
"Remove all .DS_Store files" then re Boot

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

  • External Hard Drive (from windows to Mac)

    Hi Mac users!
I just moved from Windows to Mac and I'm very glad I made the switch. However, I am having some issues with my Win-Mac transistion. I have 3 external hard drives that I used under Windows to keep backups of my videos and personal files. Out of the 3 external hard drives, only one is recognized by OS X (10.5). I really need the other 2 to be recognized to transfer some more data to my new Mac system. Could you please help me to figure out what to do??
Here are some information on my 3 externl hard drives:
1 is a WD My Book (working fine)
1 is a La Cie Porsche model (Not working)
1 is a Ximeta (Not working)
I tried several USB ports, USB hubs. I have checked the Utilities to make sure the hard drive is not recognized/detected. Please, i need help to recover some important information and to complete my Windows-Mac transistion!
    Thank you for your help!

I had to ask...I also have to ask, when you tried a USB hub, was it an externally powered hub? Sometimes a USB disk won't mount because there isn't enough USB power. However, Mac OS has always given me an explicit message to that effect...
If your LaCie came with a CD, you might use it to install drivers. In principle, that shouldn't be necessary, but is a possibility. If it is a drivers issue then you may be SOL for the Ximeta; glancing at their website--but not necessarily for the right product--they seem to claim that their hard drives require Windows. But I've never had to install drivers on a Mac to use an external hard drive.
It shouldn't be an NTFS issue because NTFS is still readable, just not writable, as you already observed with the WD. The filesystem(s) should still mount.

  • Access Time Capsule's Hard Drive from Windows Vista

Hi, I have a Time Capsule connected to my network.... It works beautifully with with my Mac mini and Macbook Pro on wired and wireless... I can easily connect to TC's hard drive and share files between the two.... I was wondering if I can access the hard drive from my Windows Vista PC that is also connected... I tried to access (The device is classified as unknown by windows) it but it I get an error message (the properties cannot not be found) from the network setup center ... Is there an easy way so I can access TC hard drive from my PC???? Thanks...

I don;t know about Vista, but I have no trouble with the several flavors of XP that are in the house.
In the Airport Utility _> Manual Setup -> Disks ->File Sharing, I have entered the Workgroup name that is used by the Windows machines, and the Time Capsule password is the same as that of the Admin user on the XP machines.
If you haven't set the workgroup maybe that will help.

  • Re formatting an external hard drive from windows to mac

bought a samsung hd400ld which i found out later had been formatted for windows nt?? just wondering if there is a way of reformatting the hard drive so i can save stuff from my mac onto it??
    any suggestions would be appreciated,

Open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and with the GUID partition table format.

  • Converting External Hard Drives from Windows NTFS

I just got a MacBook a few days ago and have been transferring all of my data over from my old Windows XP Dell. I decided that I wanted to shoot some pictures over back to the hard drive and realized that it was read only (the drive is NTFS). What are my options? I have three external drives. One 320GB and two 120GB (one is a travel drive) all are NTFS. The 120GB desktop isn't used so if worse comes to worse, I can reformat it to what ever Mac needs and play hop scotch and run all of my info around til I get all of the drives formated Mac...
    Questions:
What should I format my desktop drive to if I will use it purely on my Mac? What would happen if I use that format when I run Windows XP Parallel?
Also, my travel drive I like to use for both Mac and Windows if possible so at the very least, Windows has to read this drive. How should that be formated?
One last one, would it be worth buying a program like ParagonNTFS for Mac? Is there any risk with this. I like the simplicity of not having to play hard drive shuffle with it but don't what my data to be at risk with it...
    Thanks for the help,
    Brian

Journalled HFS. Win XP via parallels can access it just fine.

FAT32 (aka MS-DOS on the mac)

A free alternative is NTFS-3G. Link here. Not sure about reliability... I don't use it. I access NTFS over a network, so it is not an issue as it uses samba to do so.

  • External Mac hard drive to be viewed on Windows OS

I took the hard drive out of an old Mac 6116 that was in a house fire. I don't think the hard drive suffered smoke or water damage so I want to mount it in an external USB enclosure and look at the contents on a Windows 7 laptop.
Is there a program that I need on the PC to do this?

I heard about something called HFSExplorer as a read only program and it's free from what I understand.
There should be no reason to write to this HDD however I may want to pull some photo's and maybe some txt files.
I'm guessing that the trial version of MacDrive might limit use in the trial version; otherwise what would be the benefits?
Thanks again to both Niel and Allan

I see his response to your post. I'm guessing you don't understanding what he is asking......no slam against you......you just may not know these things yet.
Does the Seagate Ext. only hook up by USB not FireWire ?
Do you know what Disk Utilty is and where it is located on your system? If not we'll get you there.
That is where you can mount and format it for Mac.
If a windows formatted drive is not formatted FAT32 it will not show up on your desktop but may in Disk Utility.
The other thing, you have a MacBook but are posting in a G4 tower forum. They stopped making them years ago.
But I post both places and have both machines, so I will try to get you going.

  • Accessing physical floppy disk drive from Windows 8.1 host machine to Windows XP SP3 hyper-v?

    Hi there!
Could someone help up me? I just wanted to ask if it's possible for a hyper-v to access a physical "floppy diskette" drive?
Here's my setup: I have a Windows 8.1 as my host and Windows XP SP3 as the virtual machine. I would need to access the contents of the physical floppy diskette drive from the Windows XP SP3 vm. This is needed, because, currently our customer is still using
floppy disk drives, to most of their in-house applications. I tried to open Drive A: inside Windows XP SP3 VM while the physical diskette from the Windows 8.1 is inserted. But then again, it cannot directly access the contents. Also, I tried to use "virtual
floppy drives" and copy the files from the diskette. But for some reason, their applications do not support it. I did check device manager in Windows XP SP3 vm, but i cannot see the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" option inside the VM.
    Please help!!! Thank you!
    All the best,
    MS CAMPer

HI Carey, thanks for this, But this is under System Center Virtual Machine Manager. I already saw this a while ago.
Anyway, is there a way for Windows XP VM to access a physical floppy diskette drives inserted to Windows 8.1 host machine? I dont intend to use Virtual floppy disks. Only Physical ones.
Please please. Need your help guys! :( Thank you!

  • Can't boot up into OS X after attempting to partition the hard drive from Windows

I recently installed Windows 7 on a partition of the hard drive in my iMac. In an attempt to make the Windows partition bigger I did something to the OS X partition and now I do not recieve the option to start up in OS X when I hold option down on the boot up screen. Is there any way I can fix this? I checked the hard drive and ~300mb (the size of the OS X partition) is still being used but I can't access it.

Your question seems to be a MS Windows question. If you use Boot Camp then post there. If you use Parallels or another virtualtization app to run Windows please post in those forums. Most users on this forum don't use Windows, some do but most do not.
    Best of luck.

  • How can I move photos from an external mac hard drive to new Macbook pro?

Hi I hope someone can help. My girlfriend spilled soda on her 2008 macbook aluminium running Leopard , rendering it useless. She has since bought a new Macbook pro and would like to get her photos from iphoto onto her new comp. I've removed her harddrive from her old damaged computer and put it into an external USB enclosure, her new Macbook picks up the external hardrive but when I try to move the photo folder (drag) onto her new computer, it says something about the version of iphoto not being compatible. Also when i click on the photo folder on the external harddrive there are no photos on it. Any help would be appreciated, and would score me some brownie points with her .

Does she have any photos in the iPhoto library on her new machine?
What version of iPhoto does she have?
The general answer is to trash the iPhoto library on the new computer (assuming it is empty) and drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert the library

  • [Help Accessing External usb 1TB HD from windows 7 on Imac with Lion]

Hello to everyone, i would like some help and im not finding any solution on how to solve the problem. I upgraded from snow leopard to Lion, where i could share without any problem every file on mac hd or the external hd, no problems at all. Now using osx lion and its such a headache to share anything, i created a "sharing only" account and added it on the "file sharing" after enable "Share files and folders using SMB".
Now the problem is, i went to the "+" add button on the "Shared Folders" and added all folders there that i would like to use from my windows 7 PC, i can access everything that is on the macintosh HD, but i cant access anything that is on my external HD. I dont know if this information is relevant but im using paragon ntfs 9.0.5 to manage the use of the external ntfs HD. I tried "Apply permissions to enclosed items" on every user listed for the folders i want to access, but it didnt help either.
    Thanks in advance.

Holding alt key does bring up the choices, but I never see the bootable USB or external DVD drive as options... I only see the 2 partitions - the main iMac and the partition created by Bootcamp to install windows.

  • Accessing a USB hard drive connected to a AEBS from Windows XP SP2

Hi everybody my problem is this, I am using the AEBS. I have an iMac G5 and a Sony vaio laptop running Windows XP SP2. After some initial problems both connect to the Internet and if I attach a USB printer to the AEBS both allow you to print remotely however if I attach an external hard drive only the iMac can access it. The airport disk agent for Windows pops up that a disk has become available but when you try to access it you get an alert message that says, “unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype login information or contact the disk’s administrator.” If you click on the preferences in Airport Disk, in Windows, no disk is visible although the disk is visible in the Airport Utility! I have tried different hard drives and all the different settings in the Airport Utility for accessing a USB hard drive connected to the AEBS and get the same message regardless. HELP1

    Hi John,
My hard drive is already formatted to fat 32. If I "check disks" in AirPort Utillity in windows it see's the disk and knows how much free and used space there is on it. It also knows when I'm accessing the disk from my iMac but when I try to connect to the hard drive from windows I just get the error message in my first post. When I click on AirPort Disk in windows my base station name doesn't appear, it does on my mac. I tried you suggestion but it hasn't helped. Thanks anyway. If you've got any other suggestion i'll gladly give them a try.
    Thanks again.
