Accessing file sharing on different platforms

Hello
Recently I purchased a Mac mini server edition, for multiple reasons, the primary being file sharing.  For multiple reason I need terabytes of storage space to share over the Internet.  Completely unaware of how to run a server, I went ahead and bought one.
For the most part, everything came together smoothly.  There's a lot to learn but I'm getting the hang of it.  But one thing I can NOT figure out is how to access files that are being shared on an iPhone/iPad or a windows computer (I'm other terms how to connect to the server).  I have spent countless hours reading every Internet article there is and no luck.
I have both WebDav and SMB turned on, but when I try to access it from a mobile device i get "Forbidden you don't have permission to access / on this server
Apache/2.2.20............... Port 443"
And no matter what site I "run" on a windows, it says there is nothing.
If anybody could help me out with these, it would be awesome!!
Thanks
Ben

It seems this is not possible.
have requested a change to a future version, but not holding my breath.

  • Help using file sharing with different users accounts on same Macbook

Hi, I just wanted a little help using the file sharing option. My wife and I had different users accounts on the same MacBook, but when I am trying to share my baby's picture from my documents folder for my wife to have the same picture, I can't find the way to do that; I am not been able to find my pictures on my wife's account. Is there any way that I could share a folder from my account and my wife to have the same files at the same time on her account?
I mean, something like the smart play list on the itunes?
    Thank you

You can't do that directly unless you change permissions on your whole Documents folder which is not a good idea. Your wife can see your Documents folder from her account by going to Users/yourusername/Documents. However, this folder has no read privileges for others except yourself by default so she won't be able to open it.
rather than changing permissions on your Documents folder, you can place the pictures you want to share in Public folder in your home directory or in Users/Shared folder.

  • Windows File Sharing behaving differently on 10.4.5 ( iMac vs. Mini Intel)

I have and iMac and a Mini Mac Intel Duo configured the same:
jdoe/password/workgroup ( bot Macs have a user name jdoe)
    personal file sharing started
windows file sharing started with jdoe account enabled
From the PC I ping both Macs to check network connectivity.
From the PC command line I use the following command:
    net use i: \\imac\jdoe\Public password /USER:workgroup\jdoe /persistent:no ( works fine )
    net use m: \\minimac\jdoe\Public password /USER:workgroup\jdoe /persistent:no ( logon fails )
The SMB connection to the iMac always succeed but the Mini Mac fails. Checking the Ethernet trace, I see that as expected Windows sends out SMB/CIFS packets on port 445 but the iMac does not replay so Windows try SMB/CIFS packets on port 139 (netbios) and gets a reply.
However when attempting to connect to the MiniMac, the MiniMac responds to the first packet on port 445;Hence, WinXP does not attempt port 139.. the negotiation is performed over port 445, but fails authentication.
A few things bug me about this: Why does one Mac respond to port 445 and the other on 139? Why does the failed negotiation on port 445 seems to progress until the NTLM challenge authentication failure? Is there a password issue between the two Macs? Both are running 10.4.5 out of the box, with no extra software!
Mini Mac Intel Duo & iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

More notes... If I enable firewall on the MiniMac and allow Windows File Sharing, the Mini Mac only responds on port 139 Not port 445. Good, this is the same as the iMac default behavior, however, the login still fails.

  • Accessing files in a different package

    Hello,
Is there a way to access files outside the current package in Java?
I have a situation where I need to get the URL object out of a file, but it requires the file to be in the current directory of the class, is there a way to access file based on package name?
    URL url = getClass().getResource(filename);
Your help would be appreciated as always.
    Thanks.

This doesn't sound like a package issue as much as it is a classpath issue. If you put an arbitrary directory on your classpath, a call to getResource() will search that directory for the file.

  • Windows clients unable to access File Sharing since upgrading to Mavericks Server

This summer, I have been tasked to upgrade all the Macs on campus to Mavericks.  Including upgrading to Server 3.1.2.  Previously, we had an Xserve that ran 10.6.8 Server and two Mac mini servers that ran 10.8 Servers.  We have a new Mac mini to replace the Xserve and, initially, everything was pretty smooth.  I built the server from scratch, with the intention of using the 10.6.8 server as reference, only adapting to Profile Manager, instead of using Workgroup Manager.
The only problem I had when I started was that I couldn't get Active Directory to create home folders on my Mac Server "NetUsers" volume when adding a Home Folder path.  After playing around with it, I completely hosed the Server and decided to start over.  Now, after a clean install, I can't get any Windows users to connect to the share on the Mac Server.  It declares: "\\MacServer is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.  Account restrictions are preventing this user from signing in.  For example: blank passwords aren't allowed, sign-in times are limited, or a policy restriction has been enforced."  What's more (that I may not have noticed two weeks ago or it just started, I don't know), the 10.8 server that I upgraded to 10.9 also is not accessible and gives the same error.  However, I can access all these file shares from Macs using either smb or afp.
I'm suspicious that this issue is related to SMB1 vs. SMB2 that was implemented differently in Mavericks.
Please, any help on this would be a life-saver.  School starts too soon and I need this running on day one!!!

Had the same issue and spent 4 solid days tracking it down (looking in all the wrong places.)
For us, it turned out to be a problem in DHCP services configuration.
For the subnet under the WINS tab, the NetBIOS Scope had a '1' inserted into the field. Apple's tag when hovering the mouse over the field indicated a domain be insterted.
This prevented the Windows XP machines from successfully registering with SAMBA. Once the field was blanked out and saved, the (one machine) needing to be joined found the PDC and successfully bound to the directory.
Blank out the NetBIOS Scope field in DHCP (assuming a simple LAN environment) and you may be in good shape.

  • Home server access & file sharing

    Hey All,
I am running a NAS called OpenMediaVault http://www.openmediavault.org/ on a PC at home which has a harddrive connected and this is where I store all my client files, fonts, photos, etc (I'm a Graphic Designer). My work computer is a Macbook Pro with Lion (not Lion Server). Basically I connect to my NAS in the Finder that shows up under "Shared" devices in the Sidebar and I retrieve and store files to/from my NAS like it was a HDD connected to my MBP.
What I would like to do is be able to access my current files, while being able to add new files to my home NAS from anywhere that has an internet connection. I am the 'admin' of my server so i have access to the IP (static) and port number, username/password etc. Any NAS configuration is all done through a webGUI. I just don't know how, or if I need any software to set it up to be able to do this.
I'm not looking to screen share because I only have one Mac. I want the work flow to be the same like it is at home = Open Finder > Click on my NAS server in the Sidebar > Login as neccessary > Get see files.
Thanks to whomever helps with any solution as I am a total noob at this stuff .

The problem you face is that the NAS is the "wrong" side of your router and the security (NAT) of the router means that you can't "see" inside your network from outside. You'll need to set up port forwarding on your router so that external requests get to your NAS.
If you search here you should get some advice but it will depend on your exact router model. Also OpenMediaVault forums may have some advice.
A much messier solution may be to remotly connect to a computer thats inside your filerwall and run it from there but that's probably too much of a pain and not what you want!

    Shawn

  • Best way to access files at two different locations

    Hey Guys,
I am in need of some help. We currently have about six macs in our prepress department all accsessing 1 mac mini with three external drives that store all our files. We also work out of those drives, not on our local machines.
So far this has worked out well for us. However, in the next few weeks we will be opening a new shop about 20 miles away, that will need access to all these same exact files. We are not sure of what the best way to do this is.
Currently the mac mini we are on does not have osx server just osx. Also we have about 4-5 TB of customer files, and any given file that we are working on or would need access to could be up to 2 GB's.
We are open to all and any ideas. Obviously the cheaper the better, but please give me any and all ideas so that we can evaluate every option and decide what is best for our company.
We know that our current state of using external drives on a mac mini in not a realistic solution for ever as eventually our drives will fill up and I think we are out of usb ports to add new ones on.
Also this cannot be a one time type of fix as once we get this new location set up and established, we plan to replicate it and open up a couple more in the comming years. Also seeing as we already have 4-5 TB of data we need something that is future proof so that as we continue to expand and grow we end up needing a new solution in 5 years.
Thank you for any and all help you can provided.

@rccharles// Do you know of any software that would duplicate or mirror a sever?
I do not have personal experience beyond dropbox.
    sync
SyncTwoFolders simply synchronizes two folders. might be more for client.
    https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22644/synctwofolders/
    Unix rsync
whether it copies mac metadata may depend on what version of X you have.  May depend transfer app you use AFS, NFS, Samba.
    dropbox
Well, if you want with Dropbox, you could use Dropbox to do the syncing. I think this is the way to go because you would get offsite backup. Not sure i'd try to sync the two servers. Duplicate each server to Dropbox.  Provide read-only access to the other site.
You could experiment around with two computers and a dropbox account.  See how it works for you.  It's free upto two gigs.
    versioning
dropbox has versioning build in.  using sometype of version system while necessary was viewed as a PITA by most programmers.  The best system would be an automated on where you didn't have to do anything beyond what you were doing before.  Timemachine, etc.
    dropbox
also would we just talk to our internet provider about a private fiber channel?
I think Linc Davis has the idea.
    Router-to-router VPN.
I was putting the concept out there.

  • Corrupted user account - access files from a different user?

I am writing with a problem that I've had for about a week now, and which I have been working with an Apple tech support person to resolve, but I figured I would give this forum a shot, as well.
Last Sunday, my Finder suddenly died on me - I think it was the result of a corrupt file. I first noticed it when I would mouse over my desktop and get a perpetual beachball. I couldn't open a Finder window (or use any applications that rely on accessing my files - iPhoto, iTunes, etc.; the only application that seems to work fine is my internet browser), and when I restarted my computer, I got the same issue when it was back on. I called Apple support and have been working with a senior support rep. We did an archive and install, recreating my old user account named exactly as it had been before. Once I was logged back in, though, I again got the beachball on my desktop. The other admin accounts on the computer do not have the Finder beachball problem, so it is linked specifically to my account. Paul (my tech support friend) recommended that I buy an external hard drive, and if we can't figure out a solution short of backing up my files and erasing my hard drive, we'll do that.
My question is as follows: will I even be able to access the files on my account from another account if the finder in my account isn't working? I really only want to back up my work files, music, and photos. I can get everything else back. There are now two (or maybe three) admin accounts on my computer - can these accounts access each other's files?
I appreciate any answers to my question (or any advice you might have for how else I could resolve this situation).
    Thanks!

Assuming the problem account has short user name "foo", and one of the other working accounts has short user name "bar", try this:
    1) Log out of the foo account.
    1) Log in as bar.
    2) Open Terminal and enter this:
su foo (press return, enter foo's password when prompted)
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Finder.plist
    exit
See if foo's Finder works now.

  • How do I set up file sharing and keep my Firewall on?

When I turned my Firewall on, I lost the ability to share files and screens on my LAN. When I looked at the advanced settings, I saw that File Sharing, Screen Sharing and Web Sharing were already set to Allow incoming connections but other, related, services, AppleFileServer, httpd, kdc, netbiosd, and screensharingd were set to block incoming connections. I reset the latter to allow incoming connections but was still unable to access my computer from another. Once I turned off the Firewall, I was able to access file sharing and screensharing from another computer on my LAN.
I have a firewall built into my external router so I have some protection but I still feel uncomfortable with the Firewall on my computer turned off.
When my firewall is on even with setting up to allow incoming connections, there are lots of console messages like:
1/8/12 3:00:00.882 PM Firewall: Deny netbiosd data in from 192.168.1.2:51619 to port 137 proto=17
They go away as soon as I turn off the firewall.
I did not find the Apple technical article "Set firewall access for services and applications" at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh18503.html useful at all.
Any ideas as to what is wrong?

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • How to undo the file sharing in your internal hard drive in Macbook?

I thought the way to lock and unlock a file would also be the same procedure when locking the internal hard drive?
Basically what happened is that I have an icon on my desktop (top-right corner) where I can access my applications, home, etc.
I thought I could privitize my whole entire system if I just change the file sharing into "Read Only (Drop Box)" status.
So I right-click on the icon, then clicked "Get Info," then clicked the lock button then it asked me for my password to be able to make changes.
My fault was I made the "Home" and "Admin" to "Read Only (Drop Box) status and "Other Users" to "No Access" file sharing.
Now in result I cannot click on anything. All the applications are lock. Even the System Preferences.
Another problem I came across is that I tried to turn my MacBook on...and it would just stay on the white screen with the apple logo and it would just load for ever.
So overall, my whole entire mac system is locked, can't open anything and I cannot turn on my Mac.
I tried calling the Apple call support services. But my warranty has expired. I could pay for it, but I really do want to save.
I hope someone can tell me a good solution. Next time I'll make sure not to do experiments anymore and stick to what I know.

You need to do it as soon as you turn the computer back on. If you have a firmware password set on the computer, you'll need to know it and have a Mac OS X install DVD; if you don't have either and a firmware password is set, contact Apple.

  • Can't access files in Time Capsule in WIN7 64 Bit- says folder is empty

Hi there. I can't seem to access my files in Time Capsule using WIN7 64 BIT, it works fine as a router , i can see the time capsule online and how much space it's occupied, however whenever i click on it , it says folder it empty. I can access the files from OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
I tried to drag and drop new files into the Time Capsule in WIN7 , it copies/paste the files fine for a second and then disappear, and if i go back to the Snow Leopard i can see those folders again , so i am guessing i need enable some kind access/ file sharing option or whatever that allows the files to be visible. Has anyone faced this situation in WIN7 64 BIT ?
    Thanks

  • File Sharing passwords

I am trying to share files between iBook and iMac. Both show up in the other computer's network, and printing wirelessly works as well. However, it is looking for a password for registered user in each computer, and any of the passwords I know to have set up are not recognized. Do you need to set up a registered user in the host computer before the remote user can access file sharing? File sharing is turned on, so that doesn't seem to be an issue.

dan, Welcome to the discussion area!
Let's assume that you have an OS X user 'MyName' on your iMac with a password 'MyPassword'.
If you are sitting at your iBook you can log into the iMac using the username 'MyName' and password 'MyPassword'.

  • Accessing files across clusters

I wasn't sure if this would go here or in the Off-Topic, so I flipped a coin.
Background: My workplace has an EVAL environment and a PROD environment which are basically off-limits to developers. These are unix boxes which have weblogic servers in a cluster. Logical or Physical, I am not sure. We developers of applications don't even have access to the logs etc. This is a major pain in the ass since the snotty-assed unix admins require a "upper level clearance" before they can hand us log files. Jeez !
Possible Solution: An idea that me and a fellow developer has suggested to our bosses, is to have a link in all of our apps called "View Logs" which will be accessible only to developers of the said app. Our bosses have told us that if we can do something like this, they would push the required buttons to get us access to the log files of individual apps so that we can display it in the app itself or allow them to download it.
The solution seems easy enough to implement on a single instance of a server. You get access to the logs and just display the last 200 odd lines on a html page or give them the option of downloading the entire file. However, because our servers are in a cluster, if any error has occurred on server2, and if the developer logs on server1, he will never be able to see the same log file. And because of sticky sessions, refresh of the page is not going to connect him to the other server either.
So I wanted to ask if anyone had any experience with something like this. How can one access files across a different server on the same cluster? I will have to check any solutions that you guys provide, to make sure if it passes company security policies etc.etc. So any other solutions (totally unrelated to the above) are welcome too.
    Thanks

Wow,  cool. There is no knowledge about cluster on my side. However, speaking of several hosts connected in one network, yes.
AFAIK, several nodes in the cluster would be accessible via a unique NIC and thus IP. Maybe you can  setup the solution you mentioned on every node / virtual node? You can probably have a script solution to pull from every node and grep for the interessting lines.

  • Allow File Sharing Only

We have a VPN Concentrator 3005. How do we restrict access on the VPN Concentrator that would only allow file sharing on a particular server? I want the Remote users to be able to access file sharing only and nothing else. The server is running Windows 2003 server.
    Thanks.
    Diane

    Hi,
I haven't use VPN Concentrator. I use ASA/PIX for both S2S and Remote VPN.
Open port 135 to 139 (both TCP and UDP) and port 445 (both TCP and UDP).
These ports are considered dangerous ports. Make sure that when you are opening these ports for user access, it doesn't spill to internet (plain unauthenticated/unencrypted) and should be opened only to few trusted users.

  • Firewall and file sharing

I'm only using File Sharing on our file server running OS X Server 10.5.8. File Sharing is restricted to particular users in two computer labs. Is it essential in this setting to activate the firewall? At present I have it enabled. Does that affect the speed with which users can access file sharing?
    Hans

    I don't know, but I can guess -
    1) It might be that Apple regards them as "essential services" - and thus does not block them under any circumstances if screen sharing and file sharing are enabled, or
    2) it might be that the Firewall does not immediately register them as blocked, and thus things function anyway.
