Accessing files on boot camp windows partition and Mac OSx partition

Before I install Windows 7 64 bit on my iMac using Apple's instruction manual, I have a question. The manual states:
*+FAT—Provides better compatibility, allowing you to read and write files on the Windows volume from Mac OS X. This partition must be 32 GB or smaller.+*
*+If you’re installing Windows Vista or Windows 7, the Windows partition must use the NTFS format.+*
I can read, but I want to be sure I understand these two statements as they relate to each other. Because the Windows 7 partition must be NTFS format, does this mean that there is no way to read, write or copy files from one partition to the other, no matter what the partition size is?
If that is the case, I assume the best way to move files from one partition to the other would be to use a flash drive or is that also not possible due to the file format on the flash drive? I also have an external hard drive used for time machine. Any way to use that?
How will I move files from one partition to the other? And yes, I really want to do this.

Could you explain how using an external HD helps? If I wanted to use an external HD for read/write access from both Snow Leopard and Windows (XP and/or 7), would it need to be in a particular format? (No partitions - this would be a new, empty drive.) If, for example, I formatted it as NTFS, could OSX write to it if it were external?
Since I don't have/use files that are bigger than 4GB in size I am able to use FAT32 as file system on the mentioned external harddisk and flash drives.
Whether I use the harddisk or a flash drive for file transport depends for me on the amount of files I have to move.
Up to 8GB of files I move with a flash drive, everything above that I use the harddisk.

Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.
If you have a problem with your computer then it's best to ask a specific question so we can help better.

yes you need the updates and patches.
Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
    Clean disk space
Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

  • Boot camp, windows xp and macbook pro-install problem

    MacBook Pro 1,1
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    Boot Camp Windows XP
I installed a SSD and want to put Windows XP back on the computer.
I had Windows XP running under Boot Camp on my old HDD.
During the Windows XP install when it tells you to
press ENTER to install Windows XP
press R to repair a Windows install
    press F3 to exit
I can't get the install to accept any input from the keyboard.
I tried searching the discussions but I'm not finding the answer.
I'm sure it is just something simple I'm not doing. I had Windows XP
running on this MacBook Pro before.
    Thanks

I wonder if your XP works with SSD or some SSDs have had trouble with Windows on Macs...
I'd search out PC forums + brand SSD for starters users with XP.
Everyone I run across though have moved on to Windows 7 64-bit.

  • Repartition a Boot Camp Windows partition

I am trying to restore an Acronis 10 image backup on a Boot Camp Win partition. Acronis does not see the Win partition. I tried Partition Manager 8 to repartition inside the Win partition but PM says it cannot see the drive letters, though its small tools software seem to be ok with that. Has anyone tried to restore an image of another drive on a Boot Camp Win partition ?
    Thanks !

  • Completely unable to boot camp windows 7 on Mac Pro

I am at the end of my rope. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 - 2.66 quad core, 7 gigs of ram. I have been trying over and over and over to Boot Camp Windows 7 onto a secondary hard drive. But every single time time, it hangs indefinitely or straight up freezes during "completing installation". I have scoured the interent for answers. I have tried typing shift+f10 when it hangs and typing in explorer.exe. This doesn't work. I have tried having all USB devices unplugged. I have moved the drive from bay 2 to bay 1 and having the other 2 drives empty. I have tried multiple discs. And from what I have found, the Mac Pro is completely unable to boot from a USB drive with the Windows 7 installer on it. WHAT DO I DO? Please help!

your mac pro like mine has older EFI firmware that does not support booting Windows 7 64-bit.
You will have to remove all other drives.
Before you do, reformat the drive you want ot use as Windows Master Boot Record and FAT32, then format the drive with Windows during install.
Get rid of whatever is on the drive now.
You will be limited to 1.9GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium supports just one cpu, you have two.
64-bit Windows requires UEFI which you don't have and would need to edit and modify the DVD (reburn after using Imgburn).
Easy method: do basic install on a PC and then put the drive in the Mac Pro.

  • How to hide (make invisible) folders in Boot camp windows partition

I just bought my parents a mac mini core duo and set up boot camp on it. I used FAT32 so the windows partition shows up in OSX as a volume called "NO NAME". I can also see all of the files and system directories in the volume as one would expect. I have 2 questions.
    1. can I rename the "NO NAME" partition from within osx to something more like "WINDOWS" or "XP"? or am I stuck with "NO NAME"?
    2. How Can I hide all of the system files and directories? I don't want other people in the house to be able to see anything on that partition except for 1 directory called "DropBox" (or something like that). This will protect the windows partition from being tampered with, and any files that need to be moved across partitions can just be placed in the "DropBox" folder.
I would appreciate any help with this.
    thanks,

Do you have the "Developer" folder on the main level of your hard drive? If not, you can manually install the Developer Tools from the install disk(s) that came with your iBook.
I would be more than just a little worried about using the Terminal and command line codes to start hiding files & folders on your Mac if you're not already familiar with those tools.

  • Boot Camp/Windows Partition

I'm thinking of going the boot camp route so as to run a few of my windows programs and would be grateful for advice from users who have done this. Boot camp assistant seems to say 32Gb as standard for the win partition - has this been found to be reasonable? also it advises to check for firmware updates - could only find one (V 1.1) posted Nov 2006. Presumably Leopard won't need this update? System spec = iMac 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo - 2Gb 667 DDR2 SDRAM - ATI
Radeon X1600 256Mb VRAM - 250Gb Serial ATA hard drive running OS X Leopard.

  • Is my (Boot Camp) windows partition safe after installing OS X Lion ?

I work with a mac and i have an Windows partition only to work at home for my company (i do not keep documents of photo's there).
I want to install OS X Lion, but i am affraid that my windows partition will be gone after installing OS X Lion.
Apple support can not guarantee that my partition wil be safe.
I dont have data saved in my Windows partition. I have this partition just to work from home, so the data is not the issue.
I want to know that my partition wil be safe after installing OS X Lion, because i do not know how to make a new partition.
What can i do to keep my Boot Camp partition up and running after installing OS X Lion ?
    Who can help ?

I also was concerned about the early reports of 10.7 altering the Boot Camp partition id. I took The hatters advice and used the cloning method on two different MBPs (Vista & Win 7) with no problems at all.
FYI, below I have provided the steps I used to accomplish this process.
Use Yasu and Diskwarrior to prepare the existing Mac OSX 10.6.8 HDD partition.
Clone or update by smart clone to an ext HDD with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Restart from the cloned ext HDD and select it as the startup volume via System Preferences / Startup Disk.
Install 10.7 Lion on the cloned ext HDD
Install Lion 10.7.2 update on the ext HDD
Restart the OSX 10.7 ext HDD and test and adjust the preferences if needed.
When satisfied, clone the OSX 10.7 ext HDD back to the existing Mac HDD.
The Boot Camp partition will not be altered as to drive id which appeared to cause problems for a few people.
The recovery partition will be on the ext HDD and can be used for trouble shooting.
A more convenient way to have the recovery/reinstallation environment is to create a Lion install USB thumb drive.

  • Boot Camp - Windows can read Mac disk, but cannot write to it

iMac OSX Snow Leopard. Windows XP.
Can anyone help me resolve this. I have installed Windows XP using Boot Camp. The Windows folder is 31GB using FAT32.
Windows can read from the Mac disk, but cannot write to it (I get an ACCESS DENIED) error.
I have checked that permissions are set to Read/Write on the Mac, and have run permissions manager to check all is well. I have also tried deleting and reinstalling Windows, and creating a second User on the Mac.
When I boot into OsX then I can write to the Mac hard disk from another (Windows) computer on a network.
I think this did work initially, and it stopped working when I changed the computer name on the Mac (though this might be a red herring -- but it did definitely work OK yesterday).
I'm a new convert to Macs, but am experienced with Windows machines, and I would appreciate any pointers.

This is by design. The driver that allows access to the HFS partition is read-only. This prevents any possibility that Windows viruses could become an attack vector against the Mac OS. If you need to transfer files between Mac and Windows, you can always use an external hard disk or memory stick formatted as FAT.

  • Had anybody tried to boot camp Windows 10 on Mac mini (late 2012)?

I know the support site clearly did not list windows 10. I wonder if any front runner or hobbyist had ever tried it. I am new to mac and need to use the mac to practice X code. I don't have the experience to experiment this boot camp (on windows 10) and also am in fear of messing up my mac mini if I do so.

You can also do like I did on my MBP 13 inch from mid 2012, when I removed the Super Drive and put in a SSD and kept the HDD it came with it wouldn't install  any Windows when I had two separate drives, the SSD and the HDD. So what I did was doing my own Fusion Drive with them, and after that it went smoothly to install Windows 8.1 using the Bootcamp app that is on your Mac. It is not recommended to use Disk utility to partition for Bootcamp, when having a Fusion Drive.

  • I can't install Boot Camp Windows drivers from Mac OS X v10.6 install DVD

1- I already installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit using Boot Camp Assistant 3.04 on my new Mac Book Pro 13" purchased this week, on a 60 G partition.
2- While in Windows 7 and after inserting my Mac OS X installation DVD, the screen displayed the Auto Play "DVD RW Drive  (D:) Windows Support "
box where I selected: "Run setup.exe Published by Apple Inc." and double click on it
3- Then the Screen showed the "Install Assistant" with two options on it instead of the supposed "Welcome to Boot Camp Installer" . The option were:
Remote Install OSX and DVD or CD Sharing.
4- At that point I didn't know how to continue, so I quit the process and now I NEED YOUR ADVICE ON HOW TO.

i tried to download the windows suport SOftware "boot  Camp" and it freezes!
No i can install the boot camp, but does not acept the windos 7
It runs all to the end the installation of windows, Then it begins, creating a new user, and when it will start , it CRACHES!

  • IPod classic 80GB suddenly stops showing on iTunes both on explorer and finder (I use windows 7 and Mac OSX) Any help?Tried everything nothing works!!!

    Hello everyone.
I have bought an (admittedly used) iPod classic 80GB on New Year's this year. For the better part of this month it was working beautifully.I was lucky that I got it.But just a week ago,it started bugging out.It would mount on iTunes and I would drag and drop music and videos on it but could only do it one at a time or it froze. This continued on for a couple days then finally yesterday it won't show on itunes at all.I tried resetting it,changing usb ports but it still wouldn't show except on plugged devices on ''Computer'' and on Finder (I have been trying to make it show on my macbook as well with no luck either)
I ever resorted to trying to remove completely and reinstall iTunes.still won't show and unfortunately for some reason whenever I try to reinstall it now on my windows 7 it says something about it ''missing a key'' and stopping the installation.
Can anyone offer me any solutions?I am growing pretty desperate here as the last time i managed to do a ''drag and drop'' to put my videos and music in it,any movie I dropped into the iPod,even though it shows on the device,it won't play at all -.-
PS.The ipod had been updated and formatted on my windows 7 if that helps any....
PS2.I had restored my iPod twice both on Windows 7 and on my MacBook when the freezing issue had happened when i plugged it in on my PC.It is currently updated and formatted on windows
PS3.iPod is on disk mode already and now still can't reinstall itunes 11
SOS Someone help me Offer me some solutions other than the ones I've already tried??

I am still having the problem. I have noticed a pattern to the seemingly random freezes.
The iPod is stopping to Sync at almost predictable points during the sync. The first stoppage occurs around the 1.9GB part of the sync. This has not always been the same file but it is always around the same place.
When I sync in small chunks the freeze occurs at almost the same place every time. As soon as it freezes, iTunes is toast and the entire computer needs to be restarted.
Anyways, the freeze happens around every 2GB's of data transferred. It does not have to be in one chunk, it is almost like it is happening on the iPod. Like the iPod is kicking itself out of the sync at certain points along it's hard drive or something. Once it freezes and I restart the computer, I can transfer another 2 GB before it freezes again... then restart, repeat. Finally I was able to load up the 14.8 GB I had in my iTunes. Several hours later... not sure if I should take the iPod back or not. If it is the iPod and that fixes the problem great... but if it is my machine, I get another 3-4 hours syncing and restarting my computer. Wheeee!
