Accessing files on external Hard Drive plugged in a Time Capsule

I am keeping the 2TB DATA for network backup drive only but cannot access content of Hard Drive connected to the TC. Also, is loging in as registered user a prerequisite to access shared files on the network? Configuring initially Time Machine with Time Capsule with AIrport Utilities requires a name and a password, do you have to create it? I started using my User/administrator name and passwords which were rejected.
In finder, Shared>time capsule>HD name, does not show any content while there is 450Gb on it. How to access it? Thanks

You are asking a heap of questions at the same time.
Access to the TC is set by the settings on the disk page.
The USB drive must show up on this page. It must also be formatted correctly which can be FAT32 or much better HFS+ ie Mac OS extended.. etc.
If you have device password that is public by default .. if you changed it find the password.. but you can also have a disk password.

How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine.
I want to move my itunes library from the mac HD to an external plugged into the time capsule, but I want to be sure this drive will still be backed up by time machine.  I currentlly see no way to do this.

There is no way. You can connect the drive to your Mac and remove it from the Time Machine exclusion list. Then it will be backed up, but that will stop when you reconnect it to the TC. While it's connected to the TC, you can copy it manually to another AirPort Disk by following the instructions here (with a slight modification):
Using AirPort Utility to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk

  • Can Time Machine back up an external hard drive plugged into a Time Capsule

I have iTunes and iPhoto libraries that have outgrown the hard drive on my laptop so I've moved them on to an external hard drive. Since I'd like to move around the house with the laptop, I've plugged the external hard drive in to the Time Capsule so that the files on the external hard drive will be accessible on the network. Now that my really important files live on an external hard drive, I want to back it up.
Time Machine is backing up my laptop's internal hard drive to the Time Capsule drive, but I can't seem to figure out how to make Time Machine also back up the external hard drive that's plugged in to the Time Capsule.
    Is this possible?

I understand that [Chronosync|http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html] ($40 U.S.) can do that, but I've never used it.
If you do that, you'll want to back it up to a disk image on the TC's internal HD, or a separate HD. See #Q3 in [Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule|http://web.me.com/pondini/TimeMachine/TimeCapsule.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for details.

  • HT3500 how do you transfer data from an external hard drive to a mac time capsule

I am trying to use my Mac Time Capsule as a wireless external hard drive for my MacBook Pro, so how do I transfer the data from a toshiba external hard drive, to my Mac Time Capsule?

Drag and drop or copy and paste files just as you would do with any normal Finder operation.
The Time Capsule is located under the SHARED heading in the Finder.
Click on the Time Capsule icon and double click the folder that appears representing the drive....named Data....unless you have changed the name......to mount the drive on the desktop.
Drag/drop or copy/paste files to the icon on the desktop or to the open window there.

  • External hard Drive recomendations to run time capsule backup

Because new OSX Moutain Lion is arriving next month i decided i want  to buy an external Hard Drive to use with Time Capsule so i can backup all my data just in case something goes wrong with Moutain Lion Update.
So, my question is: Since i cant buy Apple`s Time Capsule because is too expensive for me and since my Internal Drive Stora is only 500 GB i wanted to know if there is some recomendation i should know about the Hard Drive im buying.
Does anyone knows if there is a Thunderbolt - USB3 Conector? Im using an iMac 2011 and i guess its better to run a USB 3 than a USB 2 to run Time Capsule.
    Thanks a lot.

Reset TM and point it to the hard disk connected to the new TC.
TM will say it will start a new backup in 2min.. but in fact when it starts it will discover the old backup and continue backing up to it.
You just have to work on blind faith.. it will give no indication of success until it starts the backup.. right up to that point it will say it is doing a new backup.

ha, search these here forums for "WD drives" and see for yourself ...
Do LaCie or Iomega have similar sized and priced drives? I've not heard of them makes so know nothing about them.
check their sites or google for their products:

  • I cannot access the external hard drive connected to my time capsule via wifi

I have two external hard drives (a WD mybook and an older Seagate, both HFS+ formatted) connected via a USB hub to my time capsule (which is also my wifi router).
Here's the funny thing: If I a connect my mac mini to the time capsule via an ethernet cable, both disks show up as normal in Finder - along with 'Data' under Time Capsule under Shared.
But if I disconnect the ethernet cable and connect to the router via wifi, there's no sign at all of the two disks - not in Finder, and not under 'Disks' in the Airport Utility.
Anyone out there with a solution?!

Hi William, and thanks for replying.
I do have a guest network set up (for exactly that reason that guests don't get access to shared disks) but am definitely not connected to it.
So sadly it has to be something else.

  • HT2426 how do i access my external hard drive connected to my time capsule 4th gen

how do i acess my external hard drive (wd) that is connected to my time capsule using a macbook pro?

Make sure that the drive has been formatted correctly to work with the Time Capsule.
That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled)....highly recommended.....or FAT32.
Once this is checked, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the screen
If the USB port on the Time Capsule can supply enough power to the hard drive, you will see the name of the drive displayed in the window, per the example below:
If you have the correct format on the drive, and it does not appear, this is an indication that the USB port on the Time Capsule  (which is under powered), does not have enough power to work with your hard drive.......even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
In this case, you will need to use a powered USB hub with the Time Capsule to provide enough current for the hard drive.
Now you should be able to access the drive using the Finder to mount it on the desktop.

  • What's a good External Hard Drive to use with Time Capsule

I have a MacBook and a 1GB Time Capsule, and until recently used my TC to store and access the music and video files I've purchased from the iTunes store as well as my Time Machine backups. The HD in the TC crashed a few months ago, and necessitated a long, drawn out and somewhat expensive restore to get everything off the crashed drive before restoring it. So now, I simply want to use the TC as a backup using Time Machine, but I also want a good external hard drive that is either wireless and can either be connected through the TC's WiFi base station capabilities or can plug in to the TC's USB port.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Most USB drives should work fine. But there isn't much power on the USB port, so bus-powered drives must be connected via a powered hub.
And several folks have reported that larger drives, over about 750 GB, even if they have their own power, need a powered hub, too.
And be aware that Time Machine, like most backup apps, cannot back up from any network drive. The Chronosync app may be a usable alternative.

  • I am having an issue with connecting my external hard drive to my airport time capsule.

I just recently purchased the new AirPort Time Capsule.  The network set-up easily.  However, when I connected my external hard drive (via USB) to it, the external hard drive does not show up in my Finder and I am otherwise unable to access the external hard drive from any computer connected the the network.  When I plug the external hard drive in directly to my iMac, the external hard drive is recognized right away and I am able to access all folders.  Any tips?

Check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended Journaled or FAT32.
If the drive is formatted correctly and recognized by the Time Capsule, it will appear when you open AirPort Utility and click on the Disks tab.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the next page
If the drive is formatted correctly and not recognized, you will likely need to use a powered USB hub with the drive....even if the drive has its own power supply, since the USB port on the Time Capsule tends to be underpowered.

  • External Hard Drives Hooked Up to Time Capsule Not Recognized by 2nd User

I have a 1T Time Capsule that is backing up my MacBook running 10.5.8 - so far so good. I hooked up 3 external hard drives for additional content capacity for non-backed up files (pictures and such) using a powered USB hub. After some finagling I can see and access all of them under: Shared>Time Capsule>Connected as:"user name".
My partner also has an iBook running 10.4.11 and needs to access the additional disks. Using the AirPort Disk Utility on the iBook, he can see the Time Capsule on the list and can select it. Automatically discover AirPort Disks is checked, as well as Show AirPort Disks in the menu bar. When prompted with the Action: "Ignore", "Connect as Guest", or" Connect with Password", and the password is filled in, he gets the error message:
    Connection failed
Unknown user, incorrect password, login is disabled,
or the disk name is too long. Please retype the login
information or contact the disk's administrator (-50)
I have tried every configuration through the AirPort Utility on the MacBook and cannot get this rectified. Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem. My external HD connected to the USB port of the TC can be accessed as a sharepoint as "guest" using my Ethernet connected iMac OK but when attempting to see either the TC or the attached HD on my LAN with Windows XP computers they no longer show either the TC or the USB HD under "internet places". Before changing to Snow Leopard the Windows computers could access the TC and HD just fine. Nothing else has changed. The wireless internet connection or wireless printing using the Windows computers still work OK. I don't know whether the problem likely is with Snow Leopard or some automatic update to the Windows computers.

  • Backing up iPhoto Library from external hard drive through ChronoSync to Time Capsule

I have a 2008, 2GB Mac Mini.  I moved my iTunes library, which is mostly movies, to a 4 TB My Book Studio, as it exceeded the space on my Mac.  I  back up my computer to a 2 TB Time Capsule.  I exclude the My Book Studio from being backed up on the Time Capsule as it takes up all the space due to the iTunes library.  I am wanting to move my iPhoto library as it is starting to take up to much memory on my Mac also.
My question is, if I move my iPhoto library to the My Book Studio, then get an application such as ChronoSync (or an App that will do incremental back ups & not do a completely new back up each time) to automatically back up my iPhoto library to my Time Capsule, can I set it to specifically bak up the library off the external hard drive, or will it only back up info that is stored on my Mac?
    Thanks!

Thanks Terence!!!  I received a reply back from Chronosync.  I will be purchasing their app......it sounds pretty slick
Here is their reply to the same question I asked here:
ChronoSync Express will back up the contents of whatever volume or folder you target as your source target to the volume or folder you choose as the destination target. As long as you can access the volume or folder via Finder of your Mac, ChronoSync Express can access it as well. You can create a sync document that targets your iPhoto library and nothing else on the My Book Studio and backs it up to the Time Capsule then schedule it to run automatically.

  • Can I move Itunes from a pc based external hard drive on to a Time Capsule linked to Macbook Air? Is Timecapsule a good backup option for a 'silver surfer'?

I have a Macbook Air, iPod and old pc with external hard drive. My iTunes is on the pc which I sync with my iPod. I am thinking of buying a Timecapsule for backing up Macbook. At the  sametime would it make sense/be easy to move iTunes library on to new Timecapsule and access it from Macbook?  Or would I have to store the iTunes library on Macbook internal drive? (pc is getting old and will eventually be binned).  Thanks in advance

you could do that - or you could employ a pair of *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.
either way, as William pointed out, it will boost syncing speed and improve reliability.
Or can I attached an external hard drive to the time capsule, set it us as a network drive and then set that drive in the iTunes preferences as where to where its media folder is?
yes. my test iTunes library lives on an external HD hanging off my TC and, using a hardwired connection, data transfer speeds are more than sufficient for what you intend to do.
in fact, i would recommend the external drive connected to the TC over using the TC itself. one reason is that you will not be able to backup what is on the TC's drive using time machine. also, if the TC croaks and needs to be replaced, it will be difficult to retrieve the data from it.
an external HD, otoh, could be connected to you Mac periodically and backed up to another external HD using free apps such as _*Carbon Copy Cloner*_.

  • Backing up to external hard drive connected to the Time Capsule?

I have connected an external hard-drive to the 1TB TC. Using the Time Machine settings, I cannot select this disk to backup too, even though this disk is accessible via the finder > timecapsule > external drive.
    My general issue is:
I have a 2TB hard drive on the iMac and im attaching a 2Tb harddrive to the TC, to backup to instead of the 1TB TC, wirelessly.

They often know very little about Time Machine, partly because they don't actually use it in the stores.
