Accessing floppy disk in Solaris 10 u5 VirtualBox Virtual Machine

Hi,
I cannot access my host floppy drive from my Solaris 10 u5 x86 64-bit VM on a WinXP host using VirtualBox 2.1.0. When I select "Mount Floppy A: from the VM window, the floppy is apparently mounted, as I can see disk activity. However, no floppy icon comes up on my Desktop, there is no /floppy, and I can't otherwise find the "mounted" drive.
I can access CD-ROMs using my VM with no problem: a CD-ROM icon appears on my Desktop.
Can anyone else using Solaris 10 as a guest on a Windows host access their floppy drives?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have asked this question in the Vbox forums, but evidently only a couple of users use SUN Vbox for Solaris guests, which I find remarkable.
Thanks.

I finally got the Solaris 10 VM to recognize the floppy. ACPI must be enabled for the guest. See:

  • Accessing physical floppy disk drive from Windows 8.1 host machine to Windows XP SP3 hyper-v?

    Hi there!
Could someone help up me? I just wanted to ask if it's possible for a hyper-v to access a physical "floppy diskette" drive?
Here's my setup: I have a Windows 8.1 as my host and Windows XP SP3 as the virtual machine. I would need to access the contents of the physical floppy diskette drive from the Windows XP SP3 vm. This is needed, because, currently our customer is still using
floppy disk drives, to most of their in-house applications. I tried to open Drive A: inside Windows XP SP3 VM while the physical diskette from the Windows 8.1 is inserted. But then again, it cannot directly access the contents. Also, I tried to use "virtual
floppy drives" and copy the files from the diskette. But for some reason, their applications do not support it. I did check device manager in Windows XP SP3 vm, but i cannot see the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" option inside the VM.
    Please help!!! Thank you!
    All the best,
    MS CAMPer

HI Carey, thanks for this, But this is under System Center Virtual Machine Manager. I already saw this a while ago.
Anyway, is there a way for Windows XP VM to access a physical floppy diskette drives inserted to Windows 8.1 host machine? I dont intend to use Virtual floppy disks. Only Physical ones.
Please please. Need your help guys! :( Thank you!

  • [VirtualBox]Virtual machine doesn't run anymore

    Good morning,
today is my b-day and VirtualBox thought he could make me a present; he has chosen to not run my VMs anymore. ANY of them (even if I really need only one for university).
I'm desperated, it happened other times in these days, 4.3.16 never worked for me, but i've seen that 4.3.16-2 was released and I tried it.It didn't work, here's the log file.

  • AnyConnect VPN on Mac - Can't SSH to Virtualbox Virtual Machines

    Hi,
I'm running AnyConnect version 3.1.05170 on my Mac.  I'm also doing SW Development on multiple Virtual Machines on my Mac via VirtualBox.  When I connect via VPN, I can no longer SSH to my Virtual Machines.  I'm sure there is a rules setting or something that is killing my "Host Only Network" in VirtualBox so I can no longer access them.  The worst part is that even if I Quit the AnyConnect Client, I still can't SSH to my Virtual Machines, so whatever rule is put in place doesn't go away when I disconnect the tunnel.
Has anyone witnessed this or have a suggestion on how to go about solving it?
    Thanks,
    - Curt

    Hello,
I just encountered the same problem. To solve it, I checked the box "Allow Local (LAN) access when using VPN (if configured)" in the preferences of AnyConnect.
It's working fine for me but I am using Parallels and not VirtualBox.
    Regards
    David

  • Problem with installing Solaris Express Community Edition(Virtual Machine)

When I start my virtual machine to install Solaris Express Community Edition(X86 edition), it just displays an character interface
    grub>
and there is no other useful information, so I don't know what to do next, does anyone can help?

Try seting "-jdkhome xxxxxxxxxx" in the ide.cfg file in your Forte \bin\ directory. Point it to the SDK install directory - that is, make "xxxxxxxxxx" the path to the SDK install.
You seem to be accessing a java.exe that is pointing to a location that is other than where jvm.dll is residing. This may get you to executing the correct java.exe.

  • Expanding root partition in Solaris 10 VirtualBox virtual machine

I am running a Solaris 10 u8 x86 64-bit guest as a VirtualBox VM on a WinXP x64 host. I was running out of space in the guest VM, so I used CloneVDI (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22422) to clone and expand the VM from 20GB to 30GB. Now I need to expand the / partition in the VM filesystem so that it sees the whole 30GB now available. What is the best way to do this within the Sol10 guest? Is there a way to simply add a new "extent" to the existing filesystem?
    Thank you in advance...

    * 255 tracks/cylinder
    * 16065 sectors/cylinder
    * 2717 cylinders
    * 2715 accessible cylinders*And here's the problem. The OS didn't care. This VTOC shows only ~20GB
    16065 x 2717 / 2 / 1024 / 1024 => 20.81
The only way to change this is to blow it away and recreate it and hope your data survives. If you do it right it should, but you need to be prepared for it to not work.
You'd boot from alternate media (CD/DVD/network), then use 'fdisk' on the root drive. It'll have a 20GB Solaris partition on it. Destroy it and create a new one that is full size (40G).
Now run 'prtvtoc' on the drive again. If the number of sectors per cylinder is the same (just the number of cylinders increased), then you should be okay and able to continue. If the size of a cylinder changed, then your data will probably not be accessible.
Now take your original 'prtvtoc' output file and remove the line with slice 2 in it
    * First Sector Last
    * Partition Tag Flags Sector Count Sector Mount Directory

    8 1 01 0 16065 16064
    9 9 01 16065 32130 48194Use 'fmthard' to reapply the slices.
    # fmthard -s <vtocfile> /dev/rdsk/c0d0s2Check the disk and all the slices should be back.
Verify root filesystem is still present and okay
    # fsck -n /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0If all that is done, then you're really close. Since the root slice is at the end of the disk, increasing the size is simple. Just go into 'format -> partition' and edit slice 0. Keep the start cylinder the same, but change the number of cylinders to use the rest of the disk. When done type 'label' and exit format. If done correctly you can now run 'growfs /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0' to increase the size. Reboot and everything should come up.
The worst part is that when you increase the Solaris partition, I don't believe there's a guarantee that the cylinder size won't change. When I've attempted this, I haven't had any problems, but I've always been ready if it didn't work. When it works, it does save time.
    Good luck!

  • No support for floppy disks under Snow Leopard?

I suddenly am not able to use my floppy drive anymore. Granted, I seldom ever use it, but I wanted to just back up some small files, and inserted a disk into my external floppy drive, and I'm no longer allowed to write to a floppy disk. I have the little slider button in the unlocked position, and I was always able to write to a floppy with my old OS, Tiger. Now I have a new iMac computer with the most update version of Snow Leopard, and I cannot write to a floppy disk anymore. Does anyone else still have one of these, to tell me what is going on with it? Did Apple just discontinue support at all for floppy disks? I can still insert the disk and read what is on it, and even copy it to my desktop, but I cannot write to the disk. I've tried several different ones, and they all tell me the same thing. Under Info and Permissions, it says that I am only able to read the disk, and it won't let me change it at all. I guess if this is not possible anymore, I can just toss this device, but it pains me, because I'd still like to be able to use it. Thanks for any information you can provide.
    Kristy

    Hi Kristy
It sounds as though you have solved your problem but I have found a way to fully access floppy disks formatted as Mac OS Standard. This may not work for all though because I have access to a Windows 7 PC.
On my mid-2011 iMac running OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion) I was trying to download and copy onto floppy disks (for an old Macintosh) some software downloaded from the internet.
I found, as you did, that I could read such disks via a USB floppy disk drive, but that I could not write to them.
Thanks to your post I realised that it was simply because such formats have only limited support in more recent versions of OS X.
There is software called MacDisk for Windows. I just ran it in Windows 7 running as my Bootcamp partition accessed via VMWare Fusion. The software is free to test (with some limitations).
I just successfully copied a file via it to a disk and then was able to read it on my iMac.
Hope this helps you, or anyone else looking to do such strange things.

  • Help Requested - Creating Solaris 10 x64 Virtual Machine on an ESX Server

    Hi All,
I have been trying to create a Solaris 10 64 bit Virtual Machine on ESX and VMWare server Virtualization Platform.
One of the forum entries said - The installer doesn't really care. At every boot, the processor type will be determined and a 32-bit or a 64-bit kernel will be run (unless you override it)
I hence downloaded the iso from http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp and I installed it. When I run uname -a command on the terminal, this is what is displayed -
    SunOS unknown 5.10 Generic_127128-11 i86pc i386 i86pc
This indicates that the kernel is 32 bit right?
Please help me create the 64 bit VM.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Raj.

  • Solaris 8 Floppy Disk Drive Problem

Hi to all!, I need help with Solaris 8 10/00 Intel. Ive installed it and everything works fine, but I cant make the system to recognize the floppy disk drive, everytime I do a "volcheck", it just ignores it. Inside CDE happens the same thing, when I do check the floppy, nothing happens. Any clue?. Im using an AMD Athlon 700, with VIA KT133 chipset. Thank a lot!.

Try "ftp" + your email address. (but "anonymous" works, too).
Perhaps a typo or there was some other temporary problem with the
    web site.
The K7M boards have different bios release numbers, it seems the
first bios release had a revision number of 1007:
    ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/slota/k7m
Do you have to boot using the DCA floppy for some specific reason?
(for example to install using the >32GB ide-drive patch; network install
and no local cdrom drive; El-Torito CDROM boot does not work at all)?
Or do you have the system already installed by booting from CDROM,
and you just want to get usable floppy/serial/parallel ports under
solaris 8? In that case have a look at http://www.tools.de/solaris/via/. I've written a small driver that attaches to the VIA
    686A SouthBridge PCI/ISA device and it re-enables the Super-I/O
controller on that chip. The Super-I/O chip is disabled due to the
solaris ACPI bug and is the reason all these on-board devices do
not work under solaris 8. According to
http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Motherboard/SlotA/k7m/spec.html, the K7M uses the same SouthBridge chip, so my driver should work for
    this board, too.

  • Solution towards floppy disk access problems

Some computer cases have metal front plates which must be bent/removed so that one may install floppy disk drive. When one bends the metal front plate, make sure the metal front plate is bent far enough so that it CANNOT contact the floppy disk's drive.
More specifically, if one takes a look at the bottom of floppy disk drive, one may notice a circular disk which must be able to spin freely in order for the floppy disk drive to function. Now, will with some computer cases, there may be a considerable distance between the case's metal front plate and the "true front" of the computer case.
When this is true, and if the computer's "metal front plate" is not bend far enough, the metal front plate may contact the "drive" located at the bottom of the floppy disk drive, stopping it from spinning. As a result, one cannot boot to floppy, and, when one boots to Windows and places a floppy disk in the floppy disk drive, the floppy disk drive access lite stays lit and Windows Explorer prompts one to insert a floppy disk; both of which give the impression that the floppy disk drive is not functioning.
And depending upon tempuratures, etc., this may occur sometimes, but not others. And installing a new floppy disk drive, using new ribbon cable, etc. may, or may not, help; that is, except in the instance when installing new one should "happen" to bend the front metal plate a bit more than previously. But if only slightly, the problem may return again with time.
So, if one has an issue reading floppy disks, make sure any metal front plates are bent far out of the way.

    I second that pterhune
I would say that this article describes handling of cheap cases as Q-tec, I know there are others as well, but some of Q-tec's cases have really cheap metal. It bends if you look hard at it

  • Is there an Apple approved device that will allow me to access photos on 3.5" floppy disks?

I have family photos on 3.5" floppy disks that I want to transfer to iPhoto. Is there an Apple approved device to do so? Thanks for your help!

The only problem that I could foresee is that the 3.5" disks may not be in a current Apple format of HFS+. You're probably safe if they're 1.44MB floppies but if they're 400-800K floppies - in the older HFS format you should still be able to read files from the disks with no problems, but no writing back to or erasing the disks.
I remember going through all the trouble with my SyQuest and ZIP disks, too!
    Good luck,

  • HP Proliant 380 G4 / SmartArray 6 / HP driver / No Floppy disk.

    Hello!
And here I am with a "nice" problem:
I want to run Solaris on a HP Proliant 380 G4 series with SmartArray 6. HP kindly provide drivers for Solaris 10 on their homepage. Those drivers need to be extracted to a floppy disk. Now here is where the trouble starts: I do not have a floppy disk drive for ther server nor is it easy to just plug one in. I've tried a USB floppy disk drive which at least got me as far as the first part of the installation. It then fails when it tries to actually install the driver onto the system as it does not know anything about USB drives.
I somehow need to inject the driver to the system without having a floppy drive. I'm not sure if you can do this on installation or by somehow copying the files onto the installation ISO or using jumpstart.
Any clues or hints how this might work would be very much appreciated. I'm sitting here with my head spinning.
    Thank you very much,
    Georg

Basically, yes (and I want to install Solaris 10 on x86)
    </td></tr></table>
OK, Solaris 10 should have less issues with USB floppy support than
older Solaris 9 or Solaris 8 releases.
    <table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
I have to use the console installation (without the GUI) because the interactive one hangs at the end of the disk.
    </td></tr></table>
Yep, that's a known bug in the Solaris 10 x86 GUI installer. It didn't
exist in Solaris 9 x86 and older.
When the GUI installer is in use, the final step of installing the extra
driver from the ITU floppy prompts for something on /dev/console,
but with the S10 installer GUI running there's no way to type
    /dev/console input.
    <table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
Another problem is that the installer tries to copy the driver to the array before disc 1 is finished (after it installed all the files though) where no reboot is attempted.
I'd like to try your suggestion though.
Is it possible to fire up a shell if I use option 3 on the installer (console install in GUI) or interactive shell (option 1) (if it wouldnt hang..but maybe it hangs BECAUSE it tries to access the disk) ?
    </td></tr></table>
If the GUI installer is running, right click on the desktop and open a
"Terminal" window, to get a shell.
If you run the "ptree" command when the installation has stopped after
copying the packages from CD1 to the HDD, you should notice the
    following processes:
    <div class="pre"><pre> 2678 /usr/sbin/install.d/pfinstall -f /swap2 -s /dev/dsk/n 9335 sh -c /sbin/sh /tmp/diskette_rc.d/icdinst9.sh 9336 /sbin/sh /tmp/diskette_rc.d/icdinst9.sh 9345 sh /tmp/diskette_rc.d/inst9.sh 9348 sh /tmp/diskette_rc.d/inst9.sh</pre></div>
The last one ("inst9.sh", PID 9348 in my case), is blocked in a read()
system call waiting for data from /dev/console (this can be verified with
    "pstack $pid" and "pfiles $pid").
You can use "kill -9 $pid" to stop that inst9.sh process which hangs the
    installer.
Before you kill inst9.sh, manually mount the ITU floppy from the USB
floppy drive and install the raid drivers manually.
Btw.: I'm not 100% sure, but the installation from CD1 is probably
complete anyway and the only thing missing is the raid array driver from
HP's ITU floppy. In this case it should be sufficient to boot into single user
mode from the S10 x86 installation CD/DVD (but don't forget to add HP's
raid array drivers from the USB floppy). At the "select type of installation"
prompt (options 1 .. 4) use "b -s" to boot into CD single user mode.
On the single user shell, mount both the the raid array and the UFS floppy
and use the "install.sh" script on the ITU floppy to install the missing
raid array driver to the raid array.
