Accessing Home Server via iPhone?

Hello All,
I have a home server set up, and would to occasionally access it via my iPhone. Does anyone have any tips on how to make this happen?
Perhaps there is a tutorial running around out there on the internet?

There have been occasions, mostly when out of town, I
need to email files / burn DVDs.
Just the simple ability to browse the directories
would allow me to help those that are going to take
care of the request for me. I can then call them and
let them know how to navigate to the file needed.
You would need to setup your server as a web server. Anything you can do with a web browser (well, almost anything) you can do with the iPhone. There is no command prompt, or File Explorer, or any other funcionality like that built into the phone.

We are planning to tighten the security of our SQL Server.
In the initial phase, we want to restrict all the SQL accounts(except sa) from accessing SQL Server via SSMS
Since the SQL passwords are used in the connection strings(plain text) of our .NET Applications, developers are able to see it and they are accessing SQL server through SSMS with the credentials in the connection string.
The requirement is, SQL accounts should only be accessing the databases through .NET applications and not through any other applications like SSMS, SQLCMD...etc
1) We tried "Logon Trigger", but later we came to know that there is security breach in it.
2) Application Roles - Password is plain text, again back to square one.
We are looking for an alternate. Please share some ideas.

The basic presumption here is that there is on way you can tie a connection to an application as such. There is app_name(), but since this is passed from the application, the application can call itself whatever you want.
As long as it is only a matter of keeping business users out, you can solve the issue with some three-tiered solution. Either by having a true middle layer, or just having a web server, or the application running on Terminal Server or Citrix.
But you want to keep the developers out who work with the code. That makes it difficult to lock them out of the middle layer.
Then again, you say "our SQL Server" is that singular? Don't you have more than one SQL Server? One for developement, one for test and one for production? If you only want to keep the devs out from development, you have different usernames
and password for different environments, and they are read from config files. The config files for production should be well-protected.
By the way, only permitting sa from logging in from SSMS is bad idea. Rather, you should disable sa, and everyone should log in with their individual Windows account. And those who should perform system-administration tasks should be member of sysadmin.

Can not access home network via ipod touch, password entered not accepted
Trying to help my son set up his ipod touch to connect to the network and the password I entered is not accepted.
1. Which password is required? I entered the password I use for logging into my router
2. The home network is recognized, when selected it requires a password to be entered, but I am just not sure what password it is looking for to connect.
I have not been able to find any information on this subject

You need to enter the wireless encryption password... not the administrative password for the router.

Hi,
You would have to configure Static NAT from DMZ to INSIDE for the server in the same way you have done for DMZ to OUTSIDE.
Basically in the following way for example
object network DMZ-WEB
host 192.168.1.1
nat (dmz,inside) static 101.100.1.2
This would enable your users on the "inside" to access the "dmz" server with the public IP address. And naturally only with the public IP address after this NAT.

Accessing a server via the Server app from outside a router firewall

So I'm trying to access my server using the Server app on a MacBook Pro outside my server network. I can access it just fine when my client is inside the server network, but I cannot connect when outside the server network.
I've done the following troubleshooting:
- I've turned off the server Firewall option available in the server's Server Admin tool
- I've set up port forwarding on my router
- I've opened up port 311 on the router
- I've placed the server outside the router DMZ zone and the Server app connects just fine
- I've checked the box "Allow remote administration using Server" in the server's Server app Settings tab
- With the router configured correctly, the Server app cannot access the server
There's something in the router that is blocking access by the Server app. Apple Enterprise support says they are sure there is no other port to open up. Is there something else I should be doing to access the server from outside the router using a client Server app?

ps - this worked fine when I just had the server hanging directly off a cable modem.

I and I suspect a lot of other admins would argue you should not be making your server accessible via Server.app remotely due to security concerns. Saying that, I and again I suspect a lot of other admins also want/need to be able to remotely administer servers. There is a better way however to achieve this.
You should be running a VPN server, perhaps using your same Mac server. You should leave the firewall blocking access directly for Server.app but if your remote Mac first connects via the VPN it will then be connected securely to your internal network and then be able to use Server.app

Mobile Access + Wiki Server via SSL Question

If MAS is running with SSL, does that SSL continue for the entire session? Or just the initial passing of credentials?
I'd like to not have the wiki server running SSL for internal use if MAS encrypts all the traffic. The reason for the question is when connecting to the wiki server via MAS, there is no SSL lock on the browser, telling me it's in the clear.

Mobile Access Server does not provide proxy access to 10.6 server Wiki.

Problems accessing home network via FTP

I get a -50 error when I try to FTP thru my company's wired Ethernet network to my home network via the "Connect to Server" command in the Finder.
However, I can connect with my home network using FileZilla thru the same (wired) network.
And I can connect to my homework via my company's wireless network from the Finder.
Any ideas what might be blocking me from FTP'ing to my home network via the Finder and thru the wired network, and how to resolve?

At least a partial answer.
If I use the command FTP://username@IP Address, I'm able to connect. But I don't have to use my username with wireless.

Connecting to Access Point (WiFi) via iPhone 5

My aim is to have a network configured where all devices can see and communicate with each other, all devices should have access to the internet as standard.
The reason why I have decided on a cascading network setup with a "Master" and "Slave" is because my WiFi didn't reach to all places in the house and our phones / ipads were not connected to the network in the main rooms that we use.
My Network Configuration
(Master) ADSL Modem Router < [PLUG] -- Connected to Belkin Powerline HD (200Mbps) -- [PLUG] > (Slave) Old router WiFi Enabled
1. Slave is connected to the powerline HD plug via a LAN port with the DHCP server settings turned off and the DHCP server pointing to the Master routers IP Address, which has its DHCP server settings switched on.
     - This config works with all my devices laptops, printers, DLNA servers etc.
     - However none of my apple devices work with it, the IP address of my iPhone 5 is being self assigned 169.xxx.xxx.xxx ("x" being a number from1 - to - 254)
Now I want to know is there any reason why my apple iPhone or iPad cannot work within this setup, I can't see why not, my master should assign the iPhone an IP address within the defined range however this doesn't seem to be the case.
This issue got me thinking so I though I would play around with the setup to see if I could get it working. My hunch was that it might be something to do with the powerline so I tried connecting the "Slave" directly to the "Master" and it worked so kind of proved my first theory.
I then tried changing the Slave settings, so that slave would become the DHCP server for its own sub-net, I achieved this by:

Is there any reason why my apple products cannot obtain an IP Address over the PowerLine HD plug or is there an alternative that could be suggested that would allow this to work, I can't run a cable either as its just impractical. If powerlines don't work I would just like to know why? my s4 and s3 both work fine on the first config.
Sorry if this sounds high level just the best way I could word it if any one needs more info I would be more than happy to provide specifics upon request - DESPERATLY want a solution to this.

There is a difference between accessing one of your computers at home over a local network (wired or WiFi) and trying to access the same shared folder from outside of your local network. In principle it isn't possible due to the way data is routed via the internet. You should be able to access past iTunes store purchases (where applicable) and your iTunes Match account via any Wi-Fi point that connects you to the internet directly from Apple's servers, however it might be that certain places restrict access to particular servers.

Can't access home server on my wireless network

Just bought the HP MediaVault 2020 and hooked it up to my wireless Netgear router (WPN824v2). On my Macbook I'm able to access the mediavault however on my iMac I can not locate it at all. The main reason why I chose this server was because it was suppose to be rather easy to install and use. I called HP and they have very limited support, the tech was only able to show me how to look for the HD. That didn't solve it, I need help. Please.

Firstly, you will have to buy more equipment as the Express doesn't support extra drives.
If you can use BTMM, then the Time Capsule is good, or the AirPort Extreme. However, these don't offer a web interface to access them, or a way of accessing them from iOS.
Synology NASes might work, or if you want to mess around a Raspberry Pi. Possibly even a Mac mini if you have the cash to spend.

Wrt1900ac v1 - accessing media server via a ps3

Hi I plugged a usb drive in the usb 3.0 port of the router and enabled the router media server. when i use the PS3 to browse the network it sees the router but it always says there is no track to display. i do not use the secure folder option. And i tried sharing folders in the media server tab under external storage. Is there a trick to make it work? thank you very much

Static NAT causes unable to access server via internal IP

Need some help. I running site-to-site IPsec VPN in Cisco 2811 IOS 12.4 both site. Here I encounter a problem to access server on Site A from Site B
Site A having Leased Line connected to router with Public IP. I have done static mapping 1 web server to Public IP (NAT). This to allow external users to access the server via Public IP. At the same time, users at Site B would need to access to same server via Internal IP since they have Site-to-Site VPN established. But once I done Static Mapping (NAT), user at Site B unable to access the server at Site A using its internal IP. But external user can access server via Public IP. What went wrong here. Do i need to add extra command to get this done? We really need this.

I'm accessing the server form Site B using its server's LAN IP.
If I remove the static NAT statement from my router at Site A, everything works well. I can access the server from site B using its LAN IP via Site-to-Site VPN. But in this case, external users unable to access server via Public IP since no Static NAT statement.

nope the JDBC driver will handle that gruff. make sure you
use the JDBC driver
(name as ms sql server in cfadmin) and NOT the odbc bridge
thnig.

Exchange at work, outlook at home, can I merge the two via iPhone?

I just switched to the iPhone from the Windows Mobile based AT&T Tilt. With the Tilt I was able to sync with the exchange server via activesync (push), and then when I docked the Tilt with my home PC, the calendar and contacts data would merge with the calendar and contacts I had in Outlook on my home PC. A change on any one of the three (Work, Tilt, or Home) would be reflected globally. A change to a contact or calendar entry on my home PC, once synced with my Tilt, would be reflected on the Tilt and my work PC via the exchange server. If there was a conflict (an entry edited on both the work and home PCs prior to a sync at home), I would be prompted on which one I would like to keep.
With the iPhone, I can sync with Exchange no problem, and I can sync at home with no problem, however, the way it is designed, I end up with two different calendars and contact lists that I can view separately or all at once. What I want, is one global contact list and one global calendar, where a change made on one platform would be reflected on all three. I want to view my work appointments at home, and I want to view my personal appointments at work, and I want to be able to edit them on any of the three systems.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or have I just rambled so much I've left everyone in stunned, confused silence? I've looked into MobileMe, but that apparently does not work with Exchange. Thank you for your help!

Are you unable to access your Exchange account with Outlook on your PC at home?
Doing so would keep your Outlook contacts and calendar events on your PC at home synced with the Exchange server, the same with Outlook on your PC at work and over the air with your iPhone as you are doing now which would not require syncing your iPhone direct with Outlook on your PC at home via the iTunes sync process.
Prior to firmware update 3.0, it wasn't possible to sync direct with a supported application on your computer when syncing contacts and calendar events over the air with an Exchange account, or with a MobileMe account. Firmware update 3.0 added this capability, but syncing contacts and calendar events direct with a supported application on your computer at the same time will not be synced with the online contacts and calendar with an Exchange account or with a MobileMe account.
