Accessing iPad keyboard dock with iPad in its case

I got the keyboard dock, but it doesn't seem to connect when the iPad is in its official Apple fold-over case. It's a pain to take it in and out of the case and I'm trying to decide if that's a dealbreaker. Surely, Apple thought of that, right???

We have an adapter for this purpose. It extends everything and is even small enough to fit into an iPhone bumper.

  • Can one ask for engraving for ipad and its case in retail store or it is just an online feature?

I am wondering if I go to an apple retail store, can I ask for engraving for ipad and its case that I bought there? Or they are doing this only for online purchases.

Many users have found that engraving reduces the resale value of iPads.

  • I need a virtual keyboard like the keyboard dock (with numbers and cursor keys) to work properly. Someone know if is it possible? s as an option in my ipad

Why Apple not have a virutal keyboard for the iPad equal at the keyboard dock as option? For my is more easy work whith the same virtual keyboard in the iPad like my Mac.

  • Has anyone tried using their keyboard dock on iPad 2?

I'm trying mine out as I write ... it seems to be fine?? Anyone? Anyone?!

Im using the Apple keyboard dock with the iPad 2 right now. Initial thoughts/concerns:
    - the iPad seems to want to tip over and out of the dock when using on lap
    - some shortcuts (like command+arrows to navigate back/forth on safari, etc) don't work while other do (such as command+c, v, x--the standard ones). My guess is that this limitation was intentional so iPad users don't replace their laptops.

  • IPad Keyboard Dock connects but some keys do not work.

My iPad Keyboard Dock connects to my iPad and certain keys work (qweryuio are the only working keys). I have tried using a 12" ruler but this makes no difference. I have also turned my iPad off and on again but this makes no difference.  It also doesn't seem to make any difference to use the connector.  Has anybody got any solutions I could try.
    many thanks,

    Hi Blissful Living,
Do you have another device you can test the Keyboard Dock with?
Were you using the ruler to improve the "fit" and connections?
Did the Keyboard work in the past?
It seems really suspicious that one row of keys work and other rows don't.  Keyboards operate as a grid of rows and colums and one failure mode is a row (or rows) or a column stops working.
I would definitely test this with another iPad, or even iPhone?

  • Auto-capitalization does not work with Keyboard Dock attached.

I purchased the Apple iPad Keyboard Dock with my iPad. Auto-capitalization works fine with the on screen keyboard, but when I connect the keyboard dock, it does not work.

Your statement is correct. Was there a question?

  • Keynote and keyboard dock

Does anyone know if Keynote will ever be available in portrait mode? The reason I ask is because I want to use the Keyboard dock with Keynote and the dock only allows portrait mode. Seems like a logical combination of app and accessory and highly frustrating that the two currently don't work together.

My guess is that won't be a priority since a presentation's orientation is landscape. To create a WYSIWYG keynote in portrait orientation you'd either have to scroll back and forth (ugh) or work in much reduced size (also ugh). I was thankful I already had a blue tooth keyboard to play with for a while because I was tempted by the keyboard dock until I realized the potential drawback.

  • Lightning to 30-pin Adapter works great with iPad Keyboard Dock

In case anyone was wondering, the Lightnng to 30-pin Adapter works great with the original iPad Keyboard Dock and an iPhone 5. In fact it is better than the 4S was, as that tended to pop out. The Lightning adapter stays in place, and there is plenty of support in the back plastic to keep the iPhone in place, with any tiny stress happening at the Dock connector end: the Lightning connector itself seems very solid indeed. All the keys work, and charging is fine.
(In answer to the implicit question: my employer blocks email at work on its systems, and it's convenient to have the keyboard hold the phone in place, and also charge it, which is the problem with the Bluetooth keyboard.)

Might be a question better asked of the manufacturer of the iHome device.

  • The iPad keyboard dock, will it work with the 3gs/iPhone 4 when iOS 4?

    When iOS 4 comes out?
I don't know wether this is considered as speculation or not but it is not intended to be. I want to know wether someone can confirm this or not.
    Thanks.

A more important question you should ask is why you would prefer this to a bluetooth keyboard that will definitely work once iOS 4 is released. The keyboard dock has a limitation of only allowing the device to work in portrait mode. I would find this a little annoying with an iPad and entirely unacceptable with an iPhone. I have used keyboards with Palm and Pocket PC devices before and there are definitely times that you would rather switch to landscape mode.

  • Can I use the ipad keyboard Dock for pairing with a non Apple laptop?

I am thinking of getting the keyboard dock for my IPad 2.
I also have an IBM laptop with blutooth. Can I use the iPad dock as a keyboard for the IBM?
    Thanks

If you're referring to this dock:

it is not a Bluetooth keyboard so can't be used with the laptop.  And the keyboard dock was originally designed for the curved back of the iPad1.  So while it does appear to work with the iPad2, some people report that it's a little loose and sometimes get intermittent disconnections with the connector.
As for Bluetooth keyboards, some can only be paired to one device.  To use with two computers, you may have to un-pair from the first device, the re-pair to the second device.  Some keyboards can "switch" without un-pairing, but you have to research to ensure the model you want will do that.  Depending on your usage, it may be more worthwhile to get separate keyboards.

  • Does iPad Keyboard Dock Work With iPhone?

Does the new iPad Keyboard Dock work with the iPhone? If you put an iPhone 3GS into it, will you be able to use the physical keyboard to type on the iPhone's screen?

I have an iPad keyboard dock that I used with the orignal iPad.  Tonight I found it in a dusty closet and wondered if it would work with my iphone 4s.  Plugged it which wasn't particularly easy but when I got the angle right, it worked as I was able to start a message in Notes.  But it did pop up a message after exiting Notes that this device is not compatible with the iphone or something to that effect.  I did not have the dock connected to a power supply so I don't know if it will permit typing and charging.  But it will allow you to type on the iPhone 4s at least in Notes:)

  • Ipad Keyboard dock: Volume Control issue with headphones.

I recently got an Ipad keyboard dock. I am unable to control the volume when a headphone is plugged in. Is there a setting that needs to be adjusted or is it bad hardware? The dock volume control works well without a headphone though...
    Thanks!

While it's nice that they tell you this on the keyboard documentation, it's still very undesirable.
Apple, please update this in a future OS release so I don't have to plug the headphones in every time I doc.
    Thank you.

  • IPad Keyboard Dock doesn't work w/ iPad Case

This is quite disappointing. I got the keyboard dock today and tried to use it with my ipad while sheathed in the Apple iPad case. Won't work. The connections won't seat properly with the case on the iPad. So I cut some case material away from around the connector and it works intermittently, won't hold a consistent connection. Holds connection just fine w/o the case.
I guess I'll have to wait for a 3rd party case that doesn't interfere w/ the dock, because I'm not dragging the iPad out of its case every time I get back to my office. I'm assuming the same will happen with the regular, non-keyboard dock.

I also got my keyboard dock today and found the same problem. it is a PITA to take the iPad out of the Apple case.
The keyboard does appear to be solidly made. I do like the form fitting case...
Not sure which accessory to return, the case or the keyboard...
I do wish the online store would put a warning about the case not working w/ the keyboard... Getting the right case for a device is a never-ending search...<arggh>
I wonder how well a bluetooth key board will work; that may be my option if I decide to keep the case and not the keyboard. another advantage, I would hope in a bluetooth keyboard is that I would not be restricted to portrait mode only.

  • IPad Keyboard Dock Not a Supported Accessory

my cousin just gifted me a ipad keyboard dock. when i connect the ipad to the keyboard dock, it says "this accessory is not supported by ipad" ????
this is kinda weird as its FOR ipad.
i tried connecting usb cable to the keyboard dock and then docked the ipad... and all i get is charging... the keyboard is just not responding!
no typing, no functionality... except charging... anyone any idea what is wrong?

well the same thing happened here but here is what i did.
    1) called apple support and was put on hold
    2) shook the keyboard
    3) cleaned off the silver connector with damp cloth
    4) air blasted the connection ports on ipad and keyboard
    5) tried again and it worked
    6) hung up
    update
as soon as i hung up from tech support .... it stopped working
    Update 2
    Solution!
While I was cleaning the connection points on the ipad keyboard dock i noticed that there are two white plastic guides that on each end of the metal connector. When I did a side by side comparison of a working keyboard vs mine i noticed that the top part of my left white plastic guide seems to have broken off. Seems like a manufacture defect but I don't know what apple will say. They are usually pretty good I hope they replace it for me.

  • My iPad keyboard dock no longer works.  Any suggestions on what I can do to bring it back?

I've had the keyboard / docking station / stand for over a year now and it has never given me any problems.  A kid was touching a bunch of keys the other day and I'm not sure if it froze or has a shutdown mode or what...but it literally stopped working.  It recognizes the iPad when I place it on the pins, but NONE of the keys work.
    Help!!

    Hi there BuffaloSailor!
I have an article here with some troubleshooting suggestions for this issue:
