Accessing Mail Rules

I can't see any access to Mail rules in Mail Preferences. There's just Account Information, Mailbox Behaviour & Advanced, no mention of Rules. Please help!

open the mail preferences window, then go to view>show tool bar, you will then see all the tabs available in the mail preferences window, one of them being rules.
hope this helps

  • Can't access mail rules

I don't know if I'm blind or something has gone weird. I am trying to edit the rules for email and am supposed to go to mail Preferences and click on the General option. I don't SEE an General option. All I see are my accounts on the left, and Account Information, Mailbox Behaviors and Advanced, none of which has any rule editing options.
Where the heck are my rules??
    Donna

I just asked about the same thing and received a response to look for the little gray oval in the top left corner of the preferences, click on it and the full menu of icons should appear. It worked for me.

  • Transfer Mail Rules from Leopard to Mountain Lion

I have succesfully moved my mail, mailboxes and folders from my old Power PC to my new iMac by moving my Library>Mail folder from one to the other.
The only thing that didn't carry over were my Mail Rules.
Is there some other file I'm missing?
    Thanks,

Mail rules are stored in your user Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data/SyncedRules.plist or at least they are on my computer.
To make your user library visible:
Hold down the option key while using the Finder "Go To Folder" command. Enter ~/Library. If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below. It does work with Mountain Lion.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/access-user-library-folder-in-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

When I look up the account the "password" is a long string of gobbledygook. Something I would never do.
But when I attempt to use that pw I still can't get in.
I have no trouble accessing that email account on my mac mini. Just on the macbook.

    Maiko,
I'm confess I'm still trying to get a handle on your problem. You do a fantastic job of describing it ... but I'm just trying to picture it accurately in my head.
I think, were I in your shoes, I'd begin by looking at what the debug page has to say for the specific destination in which you're interested in fixing. In other words, I'm not clear on where, exactly, this destination points ...
    Destination illinois.edu.1945806043
Is that your site, or the division within your site that you want to fix? "Normally", you do not need to specify a site handle to get to your site within your transfer CGI ... if you say "uillinois.edu", it's enough to transfer your users to iTunes U ... but every site still has a handle, and you could, if you wanted to, actually specify it in your transfer CGI. For example, this:
    Destination uic.edu.1139051993
is for my entire site ... it's my site handle. Whereas this:
    Destination uic.edu.1991288441
is for a division within my site ... but it's impossible to tell the difference between "site" and "division" from just the handle (I mean, if I didn't say "this is a site" and "this is a division", there'd be no way for you to know). So when I look at your creds and permissions on your debug page, I can't quite tell if they give you download access for your site, or for the specific division you want to fix. If you could open the debug page with your division as destination (or confirm that that's what we're looking at), it'd rule out some things.

  • Mail rules work for some users, don't work for others

Ready to pull my hair out over this one:
Leopard to Snow Leopard upgrade went uneventfully, except for the fact that server-side mail rules (accessed via browser at FQDN -> Mail Rules) work for several users (two, to be exact) and don't for the rest (about 15 or so).
The usual culprits have been reviewed: 'Enable Server-Side Mail Rules' is checked in Mail -> Settings -> Filters, 'Allow users to configure server-side mail rules' is checked in Web -> Sites -> Web Services, users can create vacation notices and email rules without issue via browser, permissions look fine on the contents of /Library/Email Rules and /var/spool/imap/dovecot/sieve-scripts, logs give no indication of any foul play (at least the Email Rules -> debug.log generates the same entries for both functional and non-functional users), etc.
I have noticed that /var/spool/imap/dovecot/sieve-scripts contains only two items, which - you guessed it - line up with the GUIDs of the two functional users. Theoretically every user with a rule should be represented here.
    As suggested in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11171395&#11171395
I created both a vacation notice and an email rule for several users, thinking that may force the folder creation for those users, but no dice. I even manually created folders for a few users with their GUIDs as the folder names and assigned each user ownership and read/write access. Still nothing. Created a few new test user accounts just to rule out any legacy account weirdness (although it's worth noting that I completely redid the OD and recreated user accounts after the upgrade) and replicated the problem with these, as well. Lastly, used Inspector to compare OD attributes between functional and non-functional accounts, with no glaring differences.
    Help!

Did you find an answer? I encounter the same problem on my new MiniServer. Deleted and created all users several times, but just for some accounts mail is working.
    Do you have the answer?
(new to this site, read a lot already, but not found)

  • Mail rule does not appear in my mail list but continues to be active

How to i make a mail rule inactive it it doesn't appear in my list of rules? It is still actively replying saying I'm on vacation to my incoming mail?
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The purchase history on your iTunes account will only show purchases from the iTunes stores (iTunes, app store, ibookstore, Mac app store), not from Apple online or bricks-and-mortar stores.
Does anything show on your credit card ? If the email is genuine then it's possible that your and their email addresses are similar and that they gave the wrong id (or the store typed it incorrectly), it doesn't necessarily mean that anybody has access to your account.
For the contact, you will initially just receive an acknowledgement email, the proper reply may take 24 (possibly 48) hours.

  • RSS + Mail rules

    Hi,
I subscribe to a RSS feed that links to free MP3s to download. Until recently, I was using Safari to monitor the feed but I found myself downloading just about every file. Inspiration struck the other day when I remembered that I can subscribe to RSS feeds in Mail as well. I thought I'd be able to set up a mail rule that would trigger an AppleScript that would download the linked songs.
Well, I was half right. I can set up a mail rule that triggers an AppleScript when a new RSS article arrives, but it can't do anything with those articles. It keeps saying something like "Cannot access account "RSS"." That's not exact, btw. I'm not on my Mac right now and I don't remember the specific error.
Is there any way to use AppleScript to extract information from an RSS article?
I thought I could work around this limitation by forwarding the RSS articles to an email account and have the AppleScript work on them. Unfortunately, the "read more" link doesn't get forwarded and that's where this feed links to the MP3s. Is that normal?
I'm about ready to give up and just run a shell script every 30 minutes. That's a lot more work on my part because I have to figure out which articles I've already seen on my own, but at least it would work.
Are there any plans to update Mail's AppleScript to support RSS? Is there any way to make Mail include an RSS article's Read more link in forwarded RSS messages?

    Same problem here.

  • Access Control Rules Queries

    Howdy,
I have a couple of queries about Access Control Rules that I am hoping someone can answer for me.
We are running GW 8.0.2 with a single GWIA for our external (SMTP) mail. The access control is set up as follows:
Default Class of Service (allow SMTP in and out, IMAP and POP3) assigned to Everyone.
Allow Internet Email (allow SMTP in and out, allow IMAP, deny POP3) assigned to a distribution list.
Deny Internet Email (deny SMTP in (with some source exceptions for internal systems) deny SMTP out, Deny IMAP and POP3) assigned to a distributon list. We add every user to this dist list by default.
The net effect of these rules is that unless a user is added to the distribution lsit that the Allow Internet Email rule is assigned to they cannot send or receive SMTP mail. This is what we are after. These rules were set up some time ago by another adminstrator who is no longer around.
My first query is relates to the order of the rules. Are they evaluated in any particular order? If so what determines the precedence?
My second query is can we dispense with the specific Deny Internet Email rule we have in place by changing the Default Class of Service to DENY SMTP in and out or does this Class of Service need to be Allow for some reason. I note that I cannot delete the Default Clss of Service or change its membership. I can, however, edit it.
Finally, I would like to set things up so that we can allow only a small group of people to send mail to a particular domain. These people are already members of the distribution list that allows SMTP out. What I am planning to do is:
Create a distribution list and add the people who need this access to it.
Modify the Allow Internet Email Class of service so that the SMTP out has an exception added for the domain we want to control.
Create a new Class of Service that allows SMTP out with out any exceptions and assign the membership of this to the distribution list created above.
Will this stop everyone who is allowed to send SMTP mail from sending to the nominated domain excpet for those people in the new distribution list?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
    Cheers
    Stuart

To answer both questions, no, you can't deny the default class of
service, cause you can only *remove* access with other classes, but
    never *expand* from the default.

    Yes, that should work.

  • Mavericks Mail rules broken, run wild on Update 1.0

I see lots of people have had issues with Mavericks Mail and rules no longer working. Mine worked fine until the update 1.0 fix was released. This is what I am experiening - seemingly different from everyone else's broken rules - I wonder if anyone has any ideas:
This is on a POP mail account:
    - Rules re-run on already downloaded mail every time mail is checked for. So for example, a rule that sends an automatic reply resend that repy every time mail is checked (every 5 minutes) even though the mail is already downloaded. The original mail is also marked as 'unread' again, even after its been read (if relevant: Mail is set to delete server messages immediately, but it makes no difference what that setting is.)
    - If I uncheck the rule in the list, close preferences, then reopen preferences and re-check the rule, it stops its rerunning.
    - Rules with a 'move' command either dont move the mail, or copy instead of move, or occasionally do indeed move the mail.
    - Rules with a 'run applecript' command: the applescript generates an error when trying to access the mail details eg sender, and stops running. This even happens with the sample Applescript provided by Apple for accessing mail with Applescript.
    - Rules that set or remove a flag - mostly do nothing, occasionally setor remove the flag, but as soon as Mail checks for Mail, the flag reverts to its previous state.
I also note that while update 1.0 corrected the 'unread count' bug. the same bug continues to exist in the mail activity window, if you have it open - the number of outgoing or incoming mails is cumulative since approx the last time the compter was restarted (does not seem to be related to when Mail itself was restarted.)
I have repaired permissions as well as the home folder permissions using the magical resetpassword command in the recovery mode, but nothing changes.
Any ideas? I'd be so grateful, although I suspect we need to wait for 10.9.3 (in my past experience, all OS X releases break Mail, and they are fixed by .3. Great.)

In our office we use Thunderbird everywhere (OSX, Windows, Linux), and we are really happy with it.
Its gui it's not nice as Mail's, but it can do everything you ask it to do, and more.

  • Wrong password in Vacation notice and  Mail rules in web interface

I have just set up a new Snow Leopard server to try it out. I especially wanted to test the calendarserver and mail and corresponding web interfaces.
I can access the My Page without any problem, but when I try to access the Settings->Vacation Notice and Mail Rules, I am presented a login dialog. When I enter my credentials, it just shakes its head like the password is wrong. I tried with different accounts, and when I used the system admin login I could access those pages, but not for the standard account. What's wrong?

Yes, the problem is the accented caracters !
I had the same problem until I remove the accent in the user information (Workgroup Manager > Users Tab > "user" > Info Tab > Firstname + Lastname).
So it's an encoding error in WPSession python module, and this problem drive the script EmailRules.py around line 162 (wpUser = wpSession.userNamed(username)) to go on the hasLocalEmailErrback def, and so give an error and refuse the authentication, even if we have a local email account.
It's boring that USA developers do not write code that manage well international strings !
It's like this forum : because I have an "é" in my lastname, I was unable to create an account for this forum, until I create a new Apple ID without the "é"
Or like the iPhone Developer certificates at the beginning...

  • Lost mail rules when upgrading to ML, can't restore from time machine

    Hi,
I've installed mountain lion and restored from time machine and mail rules were not there. There's only news from apple.
I tried to restore the rules myself (MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup) but when opening mail rules were not there yet. Nevertheless, i can add rules manually, so if there was a way of looking at the past rules I could just copy them (though it's not the best way).

My rules are still there, so perhaps Apple support speak with resource forked tongue.
Comparing an old (pre ML) rules file from 20th June with the ML one, the differences are:
The file name was: MessageRules.plist, the ML one is SynchedRules.plist. Both are in my V2 folder, but the old Rules have been copied (by Mail, not me) into the new SynchedRules file.
In the old file, for each item (Rule) the first line was Active (Key) String (Type) 1 (Value). In the ML file, this line is no longer there, so the first line is AllCriteriaMustBeSatisfied.
You can see these differnces in the "preview" part of Finder Show Info, if you have the two files to compare.
Thus, just copying and renaming the old Rules file probably won't work, because of this difference. Mail probably just makes a new file because the copied file isn't as expected. It should be possible to edit the old plist file to remove the "Active" line, and rename it to SynchedRules.plist (but see below). The top is slightly different, just below <dict>, as this relates to the Active line. There are a  couple of lines at the bottom that aren't in the new file.
The "Active" line that has gone is now in a file called RulesActiveState.plist. This file is just a list of RuleIds from the SynchedRules.plist (like this:
    AC6F6611-FF61-4AA6-9682-BA100EFAC233)
Doing this does sound rather tedious, but might be quicker than manually re-entering blocked email addresses etc. to replicate old rules. As plist files are in xml format, it should be possible to use a text editor to delete the unwanted "Active" line from the message rules list by Find & Replace All (with nothing). All this could then be copied to the "SynchedRules.plist. You would need to copy the RuleIds into the RulesActiveState.plist as well.
Make a copy of the files first just in case...

  • Transfering mail rules from Lion to Yosemite.

Help please, how do you transfer mail rules from Apple Mail 5.3 in Lion to 8.0 in Yosemite.  Thanks

The file in question that you are looking for is SyncedRules.plist in the MailData folder.  I tried re-naming a MessageRules.plist file and it didn't work.  It would be an arduous task, but the best suggestion that I have, other than to re-create your rules, is to use a texteditor like SubEthaEdit to make the format of MessageRules comply with the format of SyncedRules.plist.  I haven't tried it myself, but it might work.  Best of luck!!!

  • How to import Mail rules from Lion to Mavericks?

I tried importing my several dozen rules from OS X 10.7.5 to Mavericks 10.9.4. I tried the method described by SECollins7 here:
Import Lion Mail rules into Mavericks Mail?
It did not work. Nor does manually copying the text from «MessageRules.plist» to «SyncedRules.plist». They just do not appear in the rules settings in Mail in Mavericks.
Is there a way to import rules anyway?
    Thanks for any hints!

This issue is caused by a combination of two things:
The file used in previous versions of OS X to store local (not iCloud-based) Mail rules is not used in Mavericks.
The migration process doesn't transfer the rules from the old file to the new one, which has a different format.
You may be able to recover the Mail rules by taking the steps below.
Warning: Do not use this procedure if you synchronize Mail rules with other devices via iCloud.
    Quit Mail if it's running.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    cd Library/Mail/V2/MailData; /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -x -c 'Print :rules' MessageRules.plist > SyncedRules.plist
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

  • Mail rules -- apply only to inbox or all mailboxes?

I've done a major revamp of my Mail application. I used to have a dozen or so mailboxes, and some had rules that would move newly arrived messages from my inbox to a designated mailbox.
I've now opted instead to use a dozen or so 'smart mailboxes.' I've moved all my messages back to my inbox and deleted the dozen or so mailboxes. The smart mailboxes nicely filter the messages as I've constructed the smart mailbox rules. However, I still have two mailboxes whose content isn't easily filtered via smart mailboxes.
Now, back to my inbox .... It's got a few thousand messages. My goal is to create a mail rule in preferences that would move anything older than 30 days into secondary mailbox. If I write this rule and run it, does it apply ONLY to my inbox? Or to the inbox and any other mailboxes?

I played around with it and found out that my rule to move older docs to a separate folder only runs on my inbox, as I had hoped.

  • Mail Rules not applying to Sent folder

I have rules set up to color code my e-mails. They work fine in all my mailboxes (Inbox, Trash, personal folders), but do not work properly when applied to my 'Sent' folder (the messages all turn orange). What's the problem?
I have Gmail being forwarded to the Apple Mail program using IMAP settings.

there is no problem. Mail rules work on incoming mail only. if you want Mail rules to apply to sent messages you need a 3rd party plugin. MailActOn
    http://www.indev.ca/MailActOn.html
    can do it.
