Accessing menus is very slow unless I'm in safe mode. And I've tried everything I've found on the help pages.

If I go in using safe mode the menus work fine. If I don't the time it takes to get the sub-menu is several minutes. I've tried "disabling the add-ons" and "resetting the controls" but that doesn't affect it. It is still slow if I'm out of safe mode. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling it. And I've tried deleting the "Program Files" directory it occupies in-between uninstalls and installs, too. I've also tried getting rid of Firefox and the Mozilla Maintenance Service at the same time, too, just in case. Nothing works.
I get the following error if I look at "the console": mutating the [[Prototype]] of an object will cause your code to run very slowly; instead create the object with the correct initial [[Prototype]] value using Object.create
resource://gre/components/steelApplication.js Line 783
And I've tried looking at all the other forum posts complaining about this "mutating the prototype of an object" error.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had this problem for about a year or so. I can't remember how long I had it. I just began using safe mode all the time, so I could still use Thunderbird. I had already tried what Christ1 had recommended, too ("You can try to disable all extensions and then enable one at a time until Thunderbird starts getting slow again.").
Then one day fairly recently the problem just disappeared. I didn't do anything. I'd been upgrading Thunderbird regularly, all during the time I had the problem, too. And I'd already tried all the various solutions that had been offered on the web. It just magically disappeared one day. Oddly, I was kind of expecting that would happen. I'd just wanted it to work a lot sooner.

  • My MacBook Pro gets very slow while doing  work like watching movies and using net .. video gets lag very often

My MacBook Pro gets very slow while doing  work like watching movies and using net .. video gets lag very often and while surffing on net it gets very slow ...

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

my 3 year-old macbook pro is very slow. I have run disk utility and virus scan with no improvement. The "beach ball" will spin for minutes at a time when opening, closing or changing windows. Apple Store looked at it a few months ago with no help. What can I do?

    Under CPU: 3.5% user; 5% system; 91% idle; 441 threads; 90 processes.
    Under System: out of 2GB - 54.7MB free; 530MB wired; 603MB active; 862MB inactive; 1.95GB used.
Is too much of the system memory tied up? If so, what can I do to free some up?

  • MS-Access query running very slow

    Hi,
We've MS-Access application which was pointing to UDB. Now we migrated it to point Oracle DB 9.2. After migration some of the query is running very slow.
These queries used to take less than 30 seconds in UDB now taking more than 5 Minutes in Oracle.
    some more obeservation :
    (1) Some of the queries using "HAVING" clause without any aggregate function. When I moved this condition to "WHERE" clause, performance improved a lot.
But problem is that I can't suggest this solution to "USERS". They are creating query using "query wizard" in MS-Access and they started creating noise on this.
    (2) I tested same MDB in two different PCs and same query is returning records in 4 seconds in one system, is taking more than 10 minutes in other system.
Since I'm new to MS-Access, I don't know what other information I need to provide here.
    Please help me out.

I have seen the problem like this, too

  • MacBook Pro 13" Only boots to safe mode and running VERY slow.

    Hi...
Not posted on here before, but am desperate so hoping there are some experts out there who can help...
I have 13" Macbook pro which has ceased to work properly - it runs very slowly and will only boot in safe mode.
I have installed a new hard disk, but I get the same problem whether I (try to) boot from the old HHD or the new one.
The new drive was imaged using Carbon Copy Cloner.
I have run the repair disk priorities in disk utility and verifying the disk says all OK.
I have set the startup disk to be the new hard disk, and cleared the NVRAM via cmd-option-p-r...
As things stand at the moment, rebooting (not in safe mode) leaves me with the grey screen and apple logo (and no obvious activity for 10+ mins (so far)).
Booting in safe mode takes 3+ mins but I do get to a user login prompt and can get to a desktop.
Any ideas / help very much appreciated as I urgently need to get this machine working!
    Thanks!

    Domonic White,
when you ran Disk Utility, did you do so from your user account, or from Recovery mode? There are four options there: Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions, Verify Disk, and Repair Disk. Which of these did you do in Disk Utility?
Have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller?
Have you tried logging in as your administrative user, opening the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, creating a new standard user (e.g. “Test”), and trying to log in as the new user, to see if the slow performance affects the new user also?
There is a chance that this could be due to a faulty internal SATA cable. If you have an external disk enclosure, or a SATA-to-USB or SATA-to-FireWire adapter, try booting from one of your drives when it’s externally connected. If it works fine that way, but is sluggish when internal, that could point to your internal SATA cable as the culprit.

  • Since download of Firefox Hello desktop & laptop both on Windows 7 are very slow even after refresh, download history removed and anti virus software turned off

Since download of Firefox Hello my home desktop & laptop, both on Windows 7, are very slow to open. I have refreshed firefox, removed download history and turned off the anti virus software in extensions. All the plugins are up to date. Can we revert back to Firefox without Firefox Hello?

Firefox Hello is simply a wrapper for technology already in Firefox, it doesn't negatively impact performance if you aren't using it. Are you saying that your entire computer is slow or just Firefox?

  • Computer is very slow, doesn't follow through on commands, and dies quickly. Any diagnoses would be greatly appreciated!

I've had a used MacBook Pro for the last two years. In the past 6 months it has taken a turn for the worst: slow, doesn't follow trough on commands, quits applications, dies very quickly, and safari has gone to ****. Safari feels like dial -up at this point: it loads very slowly if at all, can't handle multiple tasks, and requires constant reloading. I have moved a lot of my documents, all photos, some music, and whatever else I could put into an external hard drive and it hasn't changed anything . My desktop is clear and I never have more than 4 apps going at a time- honestly doesn't make a difference how many are open but I don't want to over work the poor thing. I have also tried checking the utility disk/drive thing, and "cleaned" my hard drive. What is the problem? Am I due for an upgrade or is my laptop on its last legs ? I have the 2nd to latest software on my computer. Any answer would be greatly Appreciated !

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
While investigating the problem, you may have started the computer in "safe" mode. If possible, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; { o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $o; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output.

iPad is running very slow. Keeps hanging up over and over

Try simply giving it a reset. Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot. See if that helps

  • Very slow running CUITs in both Visual Studio and Microsoft Test Manager

I've tried the exact same test cases on another less powerful computer and it runs perfectly. However on one machine it runs very slow. It seems to take ages finding execute each step. Not sure what is going on. Help greatly appreciated.

    Hi Daithi,
Based on your issue, I suggest you could try to create a simple coded UI test such as you can record the Calculator action and then check if you still get the issue about
running CUITs very slow in VS.
In addition, I suggest you could try to delete all the temp files from your system and other temp files, or in short you can just log off and then log in back again....you'll definitely find your automation run faster.
There are two blogs shared us some suggestions to improve the coded UI test performance, I often use them, if possible, please check them.
