Accessing my home computer

I am currently working abroad on my macbook pro. I have a imac at home and need to access my iphoto.
I am not the greatest tech wizard but please can someone explain in simple terms how I can access my files at home.
i have someone at home who can change settings on the home computer, but again, they are the not the teciest of people.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Fleecy.

The easiest way to access files remotely is to use Back to My Mac:
OS X Mountain Lion: Use Back to My Mac
All you need is an iCloud account which is of course free. iCloud needs Lion, and so will your iMac.
There are a number of elements involved that must be working, and will not be possible for you to configure while you are away. Read the following and use it as a checklist to ensure all those elements appear to be correct before you leave again:
Setting up and using Back to My Mac with an AirPort base station or Time Capsule
OS X: Using and troubleshooting Back to My Mac with your iCloud account
Once everything is configured properly, it just works. You can log in to and use your iMac at home, including using its iPhoto, and copying files between it and your MacBook Pro, while you're on the other side of the world:
OS X Mountain Lion: Share your screen using Back to My Mac
If you have time, take your MacBook to a coffee shop or someplace with a public Wi-Fi network, and verify it works before you go away again. If it does, it should work anywhere in the world.

  • I can't access my university VPN with my iPad or iPhone but I can access it with my Mac. I was wondering if there is a simple way so that I can remotely access my home computer from the iPad, turn on the Mac VPN and then access the school network?

The iosx and open VPN app on the iPad/phone aren't compatible w my school's VPN, but my Mac is via tunnelblick. I would really like to have VPN access from my tablet so I can access journals without undergoing a tedious process.
Has anyone encountered this and found a remedy? I'm imagining an app from the tablet that can access the Mac at home to turn on the VPN to the school and then have access.. But then I'm thinking id be reading through 2 screens then formatting/resolution could be a problem.
Another thought was setting up a VPN at home so that my iPad can connect to my computer at home via VPN which would then allow me easy access to journals. But I'm lacking experience in this, especially a security issue as I'm going from point A to point C to get back to point B.
    I'm open to any suggestions.
    Thanks

You should be able to use the OpenVPN Connect app running on your iPad to connect your iPad to the VPN directly. It is an official OpenVPN client for iOS devices.
In what way is it "not compatible"? Have you tried it? Tunnelblick is an OpenVPN client, so your school's VPN is using the OpenVPN protocol. That means any OpenVPN client should be able to access it. (It is possible, but unlikely, that your school uses encryption that is not available on the iPad, but that would be very unusual.)
Otherwise, a remote control app on your iPad would let you control your Mac at home. "Back to My Mac", for example, would allow you to control your Mac remotely. The tricky part of this is that usually a VPN is set up to send all Internet traffic via the VPN server, and I'm not sure how that would work with "Back to My Mac".

  • HT3728 My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home network each day (intermittently) between about 1000-1800. My modem is working properly, and I can get on-line by hooking my computer straight to my modem, so I know it's the Time Capsule at fault. I

My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home wireless network for several hours each day -- usually between 1000-1830 or so. My modem is working correctly and I can still get on-line by going straight from my computer (MacBook Pro) to the Ethernet port. It must be the Time Capsule -- any ideas?

    Any ideas?
    Wireless Interference
Might be caused by a cordless phone in the vicinity. To give you an example, my neighbor.....across the street...used to be able to literally crash my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
I discovered this by accident one day after spending weeks trying figure out why my network would crash at random times.
Other possibilities include a wireless security/camera system near you
Still other things might be an amateur ham radio operator....which should not interfere....but again from experience, I know that this can occur.
Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid metal surfaces near the Time Capsule and/or your computers
Elevate the Time Capsule as much as possible. Think of it as a water sprinkler....you want to get the room as wet as possible
Experiment with different wireless channels on the Time Capsule. To do this:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click on the Time Capsule
    Click Edit
    Click the Wireless tab
    Click Wireless Options
Start with Channel 11 on the 2.4 GHz band and work your way down
It is unlikely that you are picking up interference on the 5 GHz band since there are.....for now at least.....far fewer networks using this frequency.

Windows: How to Authorize or Deauthorize iTunes | PCWorld.
In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
To deauthorize a computer you don't have:
De-authorizing Computers (contributed by user John Galt)
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

  • HT204406 I purchased music on my iPad (and it works fine).  It populated my purchased list on my home computer but will not download ?? when I access it in the iTunes store I can click on play but nothing happens-how do I get it to download on my computer

If you connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases then it should copy over to your iTunes library. Depending upon what country that you are in you might also be able to redownload it on your computer's iTunes via the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage.

  • My home computer with my i-tunes library was destroyed in a fire. I have the entire library on a 164GB  i-pod and i'd like to know how to move this content back to a home computer so that i can access it with my other ipod/pad/touch devices. How?

How do I restore my library from an i-pod? My home computer with my i-tunes library was recently destroyed in a fire. I have the entire library on a 160GB i-pod that I bought a few years back. How should I go about getting this content back to a computer so that I can access it with my other ipod/pad/touch/phone devices?

You can't transfer songs from iPod to computer using iTunes, except for songs you purchased from the iTunes Store (and you can re-download any previous purchase from the iTunes Store Purchased screen).
However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer songs files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your computer, drag the files (or the folder containing the files) to the iTunes window to add them to the iTunes library.

  • Access Home Computer with MacBook remotely?

    Hello,
I remember an application called apple remote access that worked for this. Is there something similar now, other than apple remote desktop. It seems like more than I need. What I'd like to be able to do is get files from my work computer in my office while traveling with my MacBook. Is there a simple way to do this via an internet connection?
    Thanks,
    Lori

if all you want is access to your files then i would use sftp, just go to System Prefs->sharing->services, and enable remote login, then to access the files you can use an application such as Cyberduck, that can connect and access your files using SFTP
you will also need to setup up your home router to forward port TCP 22 to your home computer, your external IP will also most likely change as do most consumer lines do, so i would recommend getting a client and name from dyndns.org
with all that setup you can just enter the domain your got from dyndns.org into cyberduck selecting SFTP and enter your username/pass and you will just be able to access every file on your home computer from anywhere with no IP to remember
BTW SFTP is like FTP, but everything is encrypted and it uses only one port (TCP 22) so is easier to setup your firewall/router

Just got ipod touch...and can't connect to internet on home computer.  Wifi is on and it shows connection to my home computer but I can access the internet.

What iP address is shown on the iPod for network connection?  If it starts with 169 you are not connected to the network, the 169 IP is assigned by the iPod and not obtained form the router.
    I would try:
    - powering off and then back on yur router.
    - Reseting network settings on the iPod: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.

It means making your Oracle Apps functionality accessible via the Internet to external users. This would require lots of work in terms of setup and configuration, and in case it is not yet implemented then I guess this scenario is not the best for you.
For VPN, it is a form of communication over networks that are public in ownership, but emulate a private network in terms of security. In this scenario, your Network Administrator has to set up VPN and you need to install the client version on your HomePC. Once you are connected, your HomePC will be part of the intranet (Internal Network). So, you will be able to access the application as you are at office.
