Accessing my home mac from my mac book when i'm away from home.

Hi, I have a powermac G5 at home and have just bought a mac book pro. is there any way to set them up so i can access the powermac when i am out traveling with my mac book? I guess i would need to leave the powermac on all the time, but how do i get the two connected? i have far to many files to use iDisc.
thanks for your help.
martin

What you need to do is to configure your broadband modem to forward the appropriate traffic (normally by port forwarding) to your PowerMac G5. Additionally, it is suggested you have a static WAN IP address else be using a dynamic DNS service like DynDNS…
http://www.dyndns.com/
… and your PM G5 has a static LAN IP address as well. Otherwise, the easier way is to just put you PM into your modem's DMZ and all traffic will be sent to it.
Once you do that then you'll have no problems getting access to you PM. However, you need to be aware that you will be opening up your PM to attacks from the WAN side. The best is if you're able to administer your modem from the WAN so you can turn on and off functionality as you need to.
So, what you need to do first is have administrator access to your modem.

  • How to access to my Mac Book Pro's iTunes with Apple TV?

All right, I'm new on Mac. Just bought a Mac Book Pro, Time Capsule, iPhone 5 and Apple TV!
I'm using my TC as an external HD, since I allready have everything backed up on another non-wifi HD.I've already imported some files from the TC to iTunes.
When I go to iTunes on my Apple TV it says that "THERE ARE NO SONGS IN THIS LIBRARY". Do I need to link my Mac Book to Apple TV or something? Everything is connected to the same wifi network.
    Any help?
    Thanks!!

    Hi agustin.wvonb,
Welcome to Apple!  I'm sure you are excited to learn about all of these great products.
A good place to start is our main support website
    Apple - Support
    http://www.apple.com/support/
You'll find some great "getting started" videos and specific resources for each of our products.
The first step is to decide if you want your iTunes library to be on your Macbook Pro, or on your Time Capsule.
Then you can add music to your iTunes Library and access it via your Apple TV.
The articles below will get you started with this:

  • Running M/S Access on a Mac Book Pro

My wife is starting college and needs a laptop.  Her first courses include a basic computer class (she won't be a computer major in any way, just wants to know how to better use them).  Her prof says any machine must run all the M/S products, including  Access.  We want to buy another Mac Book Pro (naturally).  I know it will easily run all the M/S apps except Access.  Is there any good way to make Access run on the Mac Book correctly (and satisfy the Prof).  I hate to get a PC just for this one rqmnt and be stuck with it for the rest of her college time.

You really haven't much in the way of options.
Install Windows on the Mac and use it to run Access.
Try Libre Office which is suite similar to Office 2007 and includes a database module similar to Access.
Determine what the database needs of the course will be to determine if some other Mac database program could be used in lieu of Access.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
    6. Last is Q.  Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs.  It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • How do I install Creative Suite on my new Mac Book when my old Mac Book is broken and disc has been misplaced?

My old Mac Book is broken and no longer turns on. A couple of years ago I bought the Creative Suite from Apple and would like to transfer this to my new Mac Book. However, to make things more complicated I seem to have misplaced my disc. How do you suggest I can transfer the Creative Suite to my new Mac?
    Many Thanks,
    Jess

You would not want to transfer it even if you could.  Transferring doesn't work in most cases.  You need to install using installation files.  You can download those files (can only provide a general link since you didn't indicate the version)...
    Download and Installation Help -
    https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install.html
You will need your serial number to activate, which is normally on the disc case.  If you registered the software when you originally installed it then you might be able to find it recorded in your Adobe account online in the My Products section.

  • When I close my Mac Book when its on a- The display won't turn back on whe-

When I close my Mac Book while it is on and leave it on while closed for long periods of time and then I open it, the display will not turn back on- why?

Does it turn on when you do something like hit a key or click the mouse? Or do you need to restart? If the former, forget about it, except try clearing the pram/nvram. (commandoption+pr on startup till it bongs a few times). If the latter and if the step above didn't work, you've got a problem that might be solved by doing an archive & install.

How do I recover my Mac Book Pro back to the day I purchased it? Will I lose apps that came with the Mac Book if I recover it?

Press the command and r keys when turning on your Macbook.  Do not release those keys until you see the apple logo...
Disk Utility will pop up.....Your choices are to reinstall, you will not lose anything....
if however, you decide to format/erase your drive, then reinstall, you will lose everything...
suggestion - back everything up and do a clean install.
    good luck

  • Cannot access my CDROM: Mac book pro 8,1 - Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011)

    Aloha & Happy New Year,
Was running (triple booted with rEFIT) MAC OSX, win7 (64) and Linux (BT5/64) all was well. At some point Win7 crashed, thus I began the reinstall process.
Problem one, reinstalled OSX with install CD without issue.  Then during the Q&A segment of fresh install vs.- use a backup copy option; I chose backup copy and somehow I ended up without the correct login pw. So now I cannot login. Nor can I reset using the Master or Firmware pw.  I have tried every imaginable pw.
Problem two, during the iphone /iOS 5 upgrade debacle (The "Encrypt iphone backup "PW issue") I lost amongst other vital info, my notes which contained a copy of my firmware and master pw.
The main issue, I cannot access or utilize my CDROM in order to reinstall or access the disk utility. It simply bypasses any CDROM straight to the login screen.
    I have attempted:
Restart HOLD-C, PRAM, NVRAM, Option key, restarting with WIN7, restarting with Linux, two different USB drives. Powered off, removed all cables. Opened up back panel, (grounded myself) removed power from logic board and re-connected all parts after several minutes.  The question, why is the CD bypassed each and every time? Mind you, this is not the first time I have faced the bypass of the CDROM, yet each time before I have somehow solved the issue. It is a mystery. As in other threads I have posted I do have an iMAC next to my MB Pro. I unseccusfully attempted to use the iMAC for assistance in accessing the mb pro.
    I AM AT A LOSS.

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
    You could replace the drive.

The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock.
Is this holding option while booting?
There was someone else around here who hosed their Mac with a Linux disk too. Try to find it.
