Accessing my program preferences

Hi, I'm running Panther 10.3.9 and I forget how to get to the program that allows me to set the preferences for what programs I want to use to open files. Can anyone help me? Thanks. John

It's not actually in Preferences. Select a file you want to associate with an application then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select the desired application from the drop down menu. If you want all such files associated with the same application, then click on the Change All button.
Alternatively, you can download a freeware program called RCDefaultApp that gives even greater control over assigning associations. Look for it at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. It does install as a system preference.

I am wondering if there is a way to prevent access to safari preferences by making it password protected. There is an addon for firefox called publicfox that does this, but our students need both firefox and safari. does anyone know of any programs or addons to accomplish this?

well, with publicfox, you can prevent the students from accessing the preferences, deleting history, clearing downloaded files list, etc...its mostly to make sure that everything that they do, we see...we are a cyber school, so the students are using their own internet service but they sign a usage agreement since they are using our laptops. Id like to be able to find out what they used when they check-in the equipment. We are already going to setup logs for access in parental controls, but i dont want them to be able to change anything in the preferences.

For such situation, I'd suggest the following:
1. Remove current installed office with the fix-it tool in
KB2739501, and follow the "Remove Office manually" section to make sure there are no remaining files
2. Either download a trial version of Office 2013 from
http://office.microsoft.com/, or from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj937170
3. Reboot your computer in clean boot mode, and run setup again

When this happens, please press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and see how much RAM and CPU Firefox is using. If they're sky high, then... Well, that kind of issues are, unfortunately, more common and the we'd like. Thankfully, 99% of the cases are very easy to solve. However, you do need to diagnose what your exact problem is. Do this:
#run Firefox in safe-mode to disable all extensions and plugins. If this fixes your issues, be them with RAM or CPU usage, then you know it's a problem with plugins or extensions. Proceed to number 2. If safe-mode doesn't fix the issues, then read bellow, after this list;
#update all extensions and plugins in your Firefox. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
#disable all extensions and plugins in your Firefox (not running safe-mode). Being certain that, as in safe-mode, the problems you're having have gone away, enable one plugin at a time. You should be certain that you WANT that plugin to be enabled, so keep your overall number of plugins as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic plugin, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all plugins (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all.
#enable one extension at a time. Again, be certain that you WANT that extension to be enabled, so keep your overall number of extensions as low as possible. When you encounter the problems, you know you've found a problematic extension, so disable it for good. Keep enabling all your extensions (except problematic ones) until you've gone through them all;
#you're done! You've fixed your problems with problematic add-ons.
Ok, if disabling all extensions and plugins through safe-mode didn't work to bring Firefox's CPU and RAM usage to good levels, then you have different issue. The most likely scenario is that you have a third party software running on your computer that is messing with Firefox. Do as follows:
#do a virus/malware check on your computer. If this doesn't fix it, proceed;
#disable all software running in the background that you don't want to have running in the background (in windows, this is done by pressing WINDOWS+R in your keyboard, typing "msconfig" (without the commas) and pressing enter. Now, under the "Startup" tab, you can uncheck the software you don't want, and reboot your system for changes to take effect. If you're unsure of what software you want running, ask someone with more experience). If this doesn't fix you issues with Firefox, proceed;
#check your firewall/antivirus/security suite for enabled functions/features that you don't want and/or may be conflicting with Firefox. You'll find that these features are most likely tied to Internet Security features, such as link scanners or URL checkers and the like. If you're not sure they are conflicting with Firefox, simply try to disable to see whether or not that's true. As long as you don't browse the web with your antivirus completely off and your firewall completely turned off, there should be no problems. If this doesn't solve the issues, proceed to the following number;
#check your operating system security options, mainly advanced options that are not configured by default. While it's very unlikely that this may be the cause of the problem (after all, it's the last item on the list), it's remotely possible. If this doesn't do it, I'm out of ideas. Except make sure you've followed my instructions correctly.

Ask whom/wherever you got the redemption code from for one that has not already been used.

How do I turn Exposé/Spaces off, without access to System Preferences because I disabled it's space?

I accidentally disabled a column of spaces where I had my System Preferences running, in "Exposé and Spaces".
Now I cannot access my System Preferences at all.
I can see System Preferences as a running application in the doc and command tabbing though running applications. I can also get to it this way and see the menu bar on the top of my screen and click through the menus and drop down menus, however I cannot see any windows.
I know that I can open different windows for if the System by selecting something in the drop down menus. Then I see the selected window if I click and hold down on the dock icon of the system preferences. However, as soon as I try to click on the window it disappears.
I know that my problem would be solved if I could turn off Spaces but how do I do this if I cannot access it though System Preferences?

After a long struggle and research I found a solution.
I discovered Spaces exists in the Utilities folder in Applications.
When I opened the application from here it gave me the 3 spaces I had assigned, vertically displayed, with the system preference window sitting, outside and fairly large, hovering, partially infront of it all the other screens. After several tries of grabbing and disappearing it finally let me drag and drop the window into one of the screen.
I am really relieved now!!

I purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 for school. I recently installed it on my computer on 1/8/14 and registered it 1/13/14. I went to get it in yesterday and I received a notice that my trial version has expired and am unable to get in to photoshop completely. I have the product serial number or license and it is in my profile. I don't recall doing it but I might have downloaded a trial verious last year. If that is the case, I figure that might be causing me all the issues. My question is how do I remove that trial version and begin using my licensed version? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!! I have assignments due and it's hard to get them done when I can't even access my program.

Glad you got it working. But I'm concerned by the 'couldn't get anywhere' statement when you tried to sign in with your Adobe ID. Take a look under your Help menu in the Editor and make sure you have a 'Sign Out' entry followed by your Adobe ID email address. If not then at some point soon you will get a warning that the software needs to be signed in to keep using it. If not a Sign Out, then there should be a Sign In - that you should choose and try again.

Same here on an older iMac since Lion. Thanks for the uncheck wake for network access tip though, it doesn't do it either in that case, I will leave it that way.

Creative Cloud Membership for Photoshop asking for Serial Validation. Can't Access the Program.

I purchased a Creative Cloud single-app membership for Photoshop and downloaded and installed it, but every time I try to open the application a window pops up asking for a serial number validation. If I click validate it says it can't connect to the internet, but my computer is connected. If I click "Connect Later" it loads for a brief moment then takes me right back to the serial validation screen. I can't get into the photoshop program at all. Now, if I understand correctly, I shouldn't need a serial number for it since it's a subscription, but I don't know why it's still asking me to validate it when I don't have one. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the program, and even talked to several agents, but 3 days after I've purchased it, I still cannot access the program. Please let me know what to do!

Assistanttolindsey the Adobe Download Assistant will download the installation files for Adobe Acrobat Professional XI. By default they are saved to your download folder. You can begin the installation process from there.

How to disable access to Server Preferences to non-admin local users

My apologies if this has been covered in other discussions. I am new to Mac OS X Server. I have just set it up on an iMac. I have set up a Standard user account as well as the Administrator user account. If I log in as the Standard user, I can still open Server Preferences and make changes to all the server settings (as if I had Administrator access). Is there any way to disable access to Server Preferences (and other Server Utilities) for Standard users?

EAC is now a web-based management console, you’ll need to use the ECP virtual directory URL to access the console from your web browser. In most cases the EAC’s URL will look similar to the following:
Internal URL: https://<CASServerName>/ecp The internal URL is used to access the EAC from within your organization’s firewall.
External URL: https://mail.contoso.com/ecp The external URL is used to access the EAC from outside of your organization’s firewall.
Note : There is no virtual directory for EAC .If you want to use EAC internally or externally ,you need to use the ecp virtual directory to gain the access.
