Accessing my work Mac from my Mac at home . . .

Hello folks,
I know this might be pretty basic to many of you, but I'm still a bit unsure of myself and my knowledge of Mac networking or remote access. I'm wanting to setup my Mac at work so that I can connect to it from my Mac at home. I use a Cable modem at both work and home, and it is active 24/7.
What I'm looking for (or hoping for) is a link to a good manual or outline on how I can achieve this. If anyone has one, please let me know. Or if it's much simplier than that even, please feel free to give me some pointers here as well.
Thanks in advance, these forums have always been a tremendous source of help. It's nice to be a part of a community that actually works together like the Mac community. Thanks again.

Wow, thanks Darren, I had no clue it was quite that . . . simple. I'll have to give this a go tonight.
Regarding my setup Patman, it's like this...at the office, we have PC's and Macs setup to share a cable modem for internet access. We have a Cable Modem which hooks directly into a Linksys Cable Router...that router hooks into an Asante Hub...all the PC's are linked directly into this hub...one line runs to my office where my Macs are setup...here I have a DLink Ethernet Switch that all 3 of my Macs (as well as 1 printer) hook into.
This might not be the optimal way to do things, but it's how we are setup atm. Does this give you the information you need Patman? Let me know if there's anything more I can tell you. Thanks.

  • How do I set up remote access so I can access my work iMac from home

I'm sorry, I'm sure I should be able to find the answer to this but so far I can't. I have a G5 Imac at work. I also have one at home. (same model computer) and a G4 powerbook and the new macbook (with the intel processor). Here's my problem. I want to be able to leave my work computer turned on when I go home and access files that are on it from home, or remotely from the macbook wherever I am. Problem is, I have no idea how to set it up to be able to do that. Do I need special software?
Thanks and I apologize if this is covered someplace else. I couldn't find the answer.
    George

That is possible. First make sure that this is OK (and allowed) with your IT/computer support at work.
    (a) Configuring the work computer...
Is there a router between the work iMac and the internet? If so, the first step is to configure the work iMac to use a static/manual IP address. The next step is to map/forward the appropriate ports through the router to the IP address used by the work iMac.
On the work iMac, open the Sharing preference pane and enable Personal File Sharing.
    (b) Accessing the work computer remotely...
You must know the public IP address given by the ISP to your work location. If your ISP gives you an IP address via DHCP this address could periodically change. If your ISP gives you a static/manual IP address the address won't change.
Start/access the file sharing method you want to use and configure it using the IP address from the work computer.

  • PC at Work - Mac at Home - use both with iPhone?

I have a PC at work and a couple of Macs at home. I plan on using my iPhone for both personal and work use. From a work perspective, I would like to get to email, contacts, calendar etc (they are all on outlook.
From a personal perspective, I am interested in bringing in my photos, music etc. from my mac. I guess it would be nice to pull ical and pers mail as well. I think that Mobile me is the solution. However, I wanted to get thoughts from other people.
    Thanks.

    Hey CoffeyL,
The iPhone can sync from multiple computers.

  • I am suddenly having trouble sharing the screen of my work iMac from my MacbookPro at home and visa versa

Neither appear in the shared section of the Finder of the other. This is despite the fact that both are set up with my AppleID and have screen sharing turned on. To make the situation more interesting I have another computer on my home network, an older mac mini. The home Mac Mini does show up in the finder as shared both at work and on my MacbookPro at home. It is set up in the same way as the other two. I can screen share my mac mini from work or my work iMac from the home Mac mini. I can even share the mac mini from the work imac and then share the macbookpro from the screenshared mac mini! I can also screen share my work imac from the mac mini at home.
I have checked my settings on all 3 computers and they seem to be exactly the same.
The home MacbookPro has OS 10.9.2
The home Mac Mini has OS 10.7.5
    The work iMac has 10.9.2
This has been very frustrating and puzzling. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Can I access my e-mail from Yahoo on my home WiFi?

I am new to the Forum and BlackBerry.
My wife bought me a secondhand BB 8900 [Vodafone] on the internet. She put in the sim from "Talk Mobile" and I am able to use the phone fine.
I am also able to connect to my home BT WiFi and the phone shows up on it's screen that connected to my WiFi and it's ID.
Is there any way I could access my Yahoo e-mail on this device using my home BT WiFi?
I have tried by going to Advanced Options ->Host Routing Table->  "Register New" -> Getting a message "Registration Message sent with an exclamation ! Sign" but no messages are seen/
Read the online BB guide but not get to what I wish.
Is there any guide I could use to access my Yahoo e-mails on my device?
Thanking you in advance for your time and an answer.

Hello knowledgesearcher and welcome to the BlackBerry® Support Community Forums.
Thanks for your question about email access on your BlackBerry® Curve™ 8900 smartphone.
You will need to contact your mobile network carrier to ensure your BlackBerry data plan includes email access as you may need one to access your email, even using Wi-Fi®.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • HT204406 I have multiple libraries - one on my work computer and one on my home computer. Can I connect both libraries (with different content) to itchTunes Ma without losing one or the other? I'd like to add what I have at work to what I have at home, et

I subscribed iTunes Match in the hopes that I could combine my two libraries remotely. Essentially I have two awesome collections of music, one at work and one at home. I wanted to be able to access my work tunes from my library at home, and vice versa if possible as well as from my iphone. Now that I've activated match on my work comp though, is it going to wipe out my library at home once I connect to match from my personal mac? I'm wondering if this will happen because when I associated my iphone with match, it told me it was going to replace my iphone music library with the match (work) library. I haven't associated my home computer library with it yet, because I'm worried it will wipe out the music I have there that isn't already in the cloud. How do I access what I've added to Match from my work computer, so that I can add it to my home computer, without losing what's already there?

  • User error trying to FTP my work Mac

I know the various FTP settings are discussed at length and I promise I have tried all of the ones that look likely.
I am trying to access my work Mac from my iBook, the desktop has a fixed IP address and is connected to a wired router/adsl modem. I have enabled FTP in prefs and disabled the firewall and router's as well, port forwarding is set for 20, 21 & 22 to the Mac's local address.
Where am I going wrong? Help, please

Since you have control of both machines I would strongly suggest that you use SFTP which has the advantage of only using a single port (22), hence only a single forward on your router, as well as encrypting your traffic.
On your desktop you need to enable "Remote Login" which automatically activates SFTP.
On your iBook you will need to use an FTP client that supports SFTP - most modern ones do but Finder does not.

  • Accessing Work LAN from home

I'm trying to access my work LAN from home & need some kind of terminal emulation software to access the DBS. Does anyone know of any that will work on Mac OS? I use WRQ Reflection on the Win PC and they don't make a Mac version.

Why can't you just use Terminal.app? I use it for secure shell access and to tunnel numerous (otherwise unencrypted) services (smtp, imap, afp, and vnc) through it. It's in the /Applications/Utilities folder. Pretty much full Unix BSD command line.
And, pardon my ignorance, but what's a DBS?

  • I can access my time capsule from my mac mini at work but my macbook can only access it from my home network. how do i fix this?

I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook, both were configured at home to access the time capsule. I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home. The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow. Accessing the same files from an older HP laptop is as fast as accessing its own hard drive. How can I speed up the accessing of these files from my apple products. One would think they would work fast and the 'windows' computers would take minutes to map the drive each time...
    Thanks for any help.

I have since moved the mini to work to use there and it has no issues looking up files on the time capsule which remains at home.
This cannot happen by magic though.. you must have configured the mini to access the TC remotely.. which method are you using, BTMM and iCloud??
The macbook whoever can only access the time capsule from within the home network. I can't seem to find what I may have done differently. Can anybody help?
How is the Macbook configured to access the TC remotely?? If you are trying to use BTMM and iCloud, then it might be a case that with the mini running the connection cannot be done by more than one computer at a time.. this is generally the case although I do not know if that is specifically true of BTMM method. Try turning off the mini and leave it off.. (off not standby)... then reboot the TC when you are at home.. and then try and connect the laptop to the TC the next morning from work. See if it is then able to capture the connection.. if so start up the mini and I suspect it now will not be able to connect.. that will prove that the TC cannot cope with two remote connections.
There also could be another factor in here. If you are accessing the laptop via the same router as the mini is on.. then actually you cannot have two users mount the same files on a TC.. from the same IP address.. as far as the TC is concerned both devices have identical IP, that is the public IP of the work location router.
If you happen to not be using BTMM then the situation is even easier.. you cannot make two different devices connect to the same network resource using the same port. That is the failing of the NAT system.. one device uses the port then it cannot be used by a second device. You will need to do some fancy footwork and use a different port.
Anyhow tell us exactly how you are doing remote access.. otherwise I am just guessing.
Not sure if your allowed to post two questions, but it's may be related. I find that accessing the files on the time capsule from the mac mini or the macbook is very slow.
Are you talking about files you are hosting on the TC?? Not Time Machine backups??
Can you tell me exactly how you are accessing the TC.. please do a test..
Copy a file to the TC and from the TC using the Laptop.. Use a single very large file, eg 1GB movie file.
Give me a read and write speed.. you can use activity monitor to give me an aprox average speed as well as peak.
Do the same test from the same computer with wireless turned off running ethernet.
Then do the tests from the mini.. same ones.. copy large file to and from the TC by ethernet and by wireless.. when using ethernet make sure wireless is off.
I strongly recommend you set IPv6 to link local only for your wireless and ethernet setup in the Mac.
    eg
Now do the test from the HP laptop and give me the results from that.
Is the issue wireless only.. ??
Then you might need to spend a bit of time fixing the wireless in the Macs.. you can run wireless diagnostics in Mavericks.

  • Accessing work Mac from home

I currently work from home as a brand designer. I'm thinking of moving away (turning the home into a business and buying another home) - What's the best way to still have access to my main (work) Mac from home and what hardware is involved? I need to be able to work on the same files and not worry about having multiple versions on 2 different computers which will obviously create probs! Being a designer I work on large image files - something to bear in mind I think?
    Thx 4 any help.

The technical is easy. The practical is not. First the technical. Assuming that you will have an office LAN with your workstation, server, etc. the best method of connecting is a VPN. This is safe (read secure) and is generally pretty simple to set up. Assuming you have a Firewall/VPN in place, the cost to configure for your Mac should be trivial. On the high end, < $100 for a vpn client like VPN Tracker. Check your Firewall/VPN vendor for a Mac client. If they have one than no need to pay for a client. Other method include port maps but they are less secure and can result in system compromise when poor passwords are used.
But now for the practical. As a designer, you files are large. Attempting to open a Photoshop document across the internet is a exercise in pain and heartache. You would need a really fast connection (> 50 Mb/sec synchronous) on both ends and you still will be susceptible to loss of data and problems. (Recall that most LANs today are 1000Base (1000Mb/sec., and those that are not are 100). I would instead recommend doing a remote control of your work machine with ARD or Screen Share (VNC) or looking at Aqua Connect (http://www.aquaconnect.net/?page_id=26). The idea here is that your work machine remains running and you make a secure connection over VPN. Then you remote control your work machine and it is doing all the opening, saving, and communication with shared resources. All your home machine is doing is getting the screen updates.
    Hope that helps.

Work with and store the documents on DropBox or something similar. It's free for DropBox. All you need after that is access to the internet and regardless of where you are and what you're using you have access to your documents.

I currently use the microsoft remote desktop connection for mac but I hate how small the screen is. Does anyone know a better program that would let me view my entire work pc screen from my mac?

You can just login and see everything ...
On the PC enable Sharing for C: and make sure you know a username and password that has at least read access
On the Mac go to System Preferences/Sharing, check File Sharing then hit the Options button
Check the third box 'Share files and folders using SMB (Samba for windows)
Some of your usernames should be showing there check at least one (I have an account created in Accounts called user just for this purpose)
Click Done and close the Sharing panel
On the Desktop go to the top menu bar and select Go/Connect to Server and when that window opens enter smb://name of your PC and enter - when the dialogue opens enter the name of a user account on your PC and it will then mount C:
