Accessing older backups from itunes?

So I was scrolling through the internet and reading some older forum post about having more than one backup. Today I recently backed up my iPhone 5 not knowing that the previous backup I had made would be switched with the latest one. Is there a way to access older backup? I've purchased Decipher Textmessage and it got all my text messages back that I had accidentally deleted that was in my first backup, but was replaced by the newer backup today. How is this possible without the older backup to be still available? Thanks!

You are correct in that the backups are incremental, and the older backup is replaced by the newer one. The only other backups that are saved and not touched are the ones from a restore. They have a data/time stamp on them. It is the regular backups that are overwritten.
To answer the other question, it would not be possible if the older backup has been overwritten.

Why don't you talk to apple and find out if backup exists? That conversation with apple will stop your guessing.

Usually it's because you are not making internet connection via wifi.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

    Hi beckiewinter!
I have some information for you that may help you understand your iPhone's Activation Lock more thoroughly:
iCloud: Find My iPhone Activation Lock in iOS 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5818
So in order to update your iPhone, you may need to turn off Find My iPhone. This can be done through the iCloud settings, and more information on those settings can be found right here:

  • HT1382 Backups from iTunes  to Disc is not available in iTunes 11.1.5.5.

    Hi,
    1. Backup from iTunes to Disc is not available in iTunes 11.1.5.5.
    2. Also, while backing up iTunes on Windows PC, the old back is deleted!
    3. How can we keep two versions of iTunes back up? Simple need for any user!
    Regards, Ramani

1 - See this backup tip.
2 & 3 - If you are refering to device backups see your other thread. If you want multiple snaphots of the iTunes library then the tool in 1. above can be used for that too. Create multiple backup pairs with different destinations and operate them in rotation.

Yes, if that new data hasn't been backed up yet.

  • When I turn on my new iPhone 5s, I have to select a language and county and then my only options are to restore backup from iTunes or restore from iCloud.  I have already restored form iTunes, so what am I doing wrong?

When I try to turn on my new iPhone 5s, the ONLY options it gives me is to either backup from the iCloud or restore backup from iTunes.  I have already restored the backup from iTunes, so I don't know why it keeps telling me to restore the backup.  And why won't it give me any other options?  I can't text, call, etc.  My phone will do NOTHING.
    Any suggestions?

It seems you restored from a blank back up if it is still asking you to choose one of those options. Set it up as new then manually restore from back up with iTunes on your computer and be sure to check the date of the back up an which phone the back up is from.

    Which password?
If you mean the passcode to your iPhone, here's the solution:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212
If you mean the encryption password to your backup on your computer:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • TS1389 older purchases from iTunes keep on prompting me to authorise and still don't play.

i'm having trouble with older purchases from itunes, now that i'm transferring them from a pc to a mac. Tracks and albums brought within the last two years are fine, but anything older as me to authorise to computer each time try to play the track.

    Hello makray,
I was looking into reasons why iTunes would keep prompting you to authorize items and still not play them, and found a great little article. It is named iTunes repeatedly prompts to authorize computer to play iTunes Store purchases found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389.
This is the overview of things to try but each one has its own set of instructions.
Authorize your purchases from an administrator account
Authorize using the correct account name
Turn Off User Account Controls (Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only)
    Remove the SC Info folder
    All the very best,

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • "re-used" TM backup isn't letting new laptop access older backups

I recently upgraded from a MBP to a new 2.13GHz Macbook Air (both machines are OS 10.6.7) , using the "migration assistant" to transfer my data to the Air.  I'd been using Time Machine to backup the old MBP.  Since I'm getting rid of the MBP, I chose the option to "reuse" my old TM backups with the Air instead of starting a new backup from scratch. That way (I thought) I'd still have access to the old backups.
My problem: when I open up TM with the Air, I can't actually access any of the old backups I made earlier from the MBP, just the new ones I've made from the Air.
The weird thing is: those earlier MBP backups are still LISTED on the timeline (on the right side of the screen) -- but they are greyed out: when I click on them, no data is visible.  (Once I reach the dates of backups made from the Air, TM behaves normally, showing me the appropriate finder window.
I'd assumed that "reusing" the old backups meant I could pick up where I left off, with a continuous run of HD snapshots stretching back into my MBP past.  Did I misunderstand?  Is this normal? When Apple says TM will "reuse" the old backups, does it just mean that TM can use the earlier data -- not that it'll be available to me?
Or is something going wrong here?  Are those earlier backups supposed to be accessible?  If so, is there any way I can fix this? It makes me nervous to lose them: you never know when you've accidentally erased something and the old TM backup is the only surviving copy.
    Thanks for your help!

    Pondini wrote:
By reusing the backups, they now "belong" to the Air, not the MBP.
    I know -- that's why I'm puzzled.
I'm looking at the backups with the Air -- not the old MBP!  But the Air can't see the earlier backups (created by the MBP) only the recent ones (created by the Air).  NEITHER machine can view the early ones!
To be concrete about this....I first backed up the MBP in October 2010 and made monthly backups.  I switched to the Air in May and made a couple of backups since then.
The MBP can't access ANY of the backups (as I expected -- as you point out, they belong to the Air now).
But also....The Air can't access any backups from Oct - April, only the ones made since May.  Even though the Air can SEE backups for Oct - April listed on the TM timeline.  They're greyed out and won't yield up their data when I click on them.  I'd thought that if the Air now "owns" the backup, it would own the whole thing and be able to browse earlier backups at will.
    Does that make sense?

right click on the folder that shows with the red negative sign, and select to "get info".  In the long skinny window that appears, look in the "sharing and permissions" section.  In the "name" column, you should see your current user name.  Ensure the "privilege" is set to Read and Write.  If your user name is not in the name column, click the + sign, and add it, ensuring the privileges are set to Read and Write
