Accessing one iTunes Libray on External HD in Mixed Environment (Mac & PC)

I've read many posts here and other places on this subject, but have yet to get a definitive answer to my question/issue.
I currently have (2) MacBook Pro laptops and (2) Windows XP PC's on my network. The PCs are hardwired while the MB Pros access the network wirelessly.
I have an AirPort Extreme Base Station with a 500GB external USB HD attached. This HD holds all my iTunes music (NOTE: My iTunes library was sucessfully moved from my MB Pro to this drive . . . including the music files, "iTunes Libray" file, "iTunes Music Library.xml" file, 'Album Artwork' folder, etc.).
I am able to access the iTunes Library from my MacBooks without any problems (got both of them to access via choosing the library when launching iTunes with the 'hold down Option' when starting iTunes approach).
Now, I understand the iTunes on Windows and iTunes on Mac think differently when it comes to accessing a library. I want to be able to access this single library via my PCs as well as the Macs (I'm not concerned about multiple iTunes access at one time). Is this possible?
I've tried the "Shift-Click" Windows option when launching iTunes to 'Choose Library' located on my external HD but the 'iTunes Library' file (without the .itl extension) is not available in Windows XP (Note: I've read posts about typing in "itunes library" with the quotes in the dialog box which apparently will work, but requires a rebuilding of the .xml file every time you open iTunes on the PC which is not acceptable for me). I've tried renaming the "iTunes Library" file by adding the .itl extension which allows Windows to see the file, then selected it and had iTunes rebuild the library with some success, but ended up the the 'iTunes Library (Damaged).itl" file issue, and most importantly. . . the Macs could no longer access the library (the MB Pros can see the 'iTunes Library.itl file, but it's greyed out and cannot be selected).
I'm not concerned about playlists, ratings, etc. I simply want to be able to access a single iTunes library located on an external drive via both my Macs and my PCs.
Again, is this possible?

See make a split library portable.

  • One Itunes Library, 2 external drives in different locations...

Here's my problem... I go everywhere with my laptop... iphone and ipod... My laptop contains my itunes library.. I connect at work to an external 1tb drive which houses my entire music collection..
My goal is to be able to copy that drive (64,000 songs) to another external that I can leave at home.. I want to be able to plug in both places without having to carry the external with me..
Is is possible to have one library and 2 externals with identical music folders? Any help would be appreciated.

How to use multiple iPods with one computer , describes two methods.
If you both use the same account (and one iTunes library), the easiest way is to create separate (Smart) Playlists for each iPod.
    Hope this helps.

  • I can't access my itunes from my external harddrive anymore

I hope someone can provide some guidance and insight regarding the following problem:     I have an imac g5  osx 10.3.9 and I used to access my itunes library from my external harddrive (maxtor). While living overseas last year I bought a Mac Book osx 10.6.8 and initally was successful in accessing my itunes library from my maxtor external harddrive. After two weeks my Mac Book started ejecting the harddrive and I wasn't able to use it again (maybe something to do with it needing too much power. I have found many similar discussions on this).    Now I am back home and using my imac g5 again but am having problems accessing my itunes library on the external harddrive. The imac recognises the external harddrive but if I try and play a song on itunes it says it cannot be found and I have to manually direct it to the song on the external harddrive. It may play or it may freeze. I have tried to reset everything through itunes preferences but nothing changes or else everything freezes.
when I got the Mac Book I tried to set up the Time Machine and I think that is when things started going wrong with my external harddrive. I am not too computer savvy so I'm not too sure.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • HT204053 Can you have multiple apple ids that access one itune account??

I need to know if I can have multiple Apple Ids attached to one itunes account.  Trying to set facetime up on these separate devices and it keeps failing.  Any help would be appreciated.  I tried to add additional emails, but I all I get is verifying and it never verifies it.

yes you can still sync all the devices on itunes using one master itunes/appleID account.
    Music:
If you want to select specific playlists for your kids, DON'T enable iTunes Match on their devices, otherwise they will get ALL the playlists on their devices (learned that the hard way)
If you have wi-fi synced enabled that should still work.
    Apps:
I manually select which apps they get on their devices using itunes. It only changes when they re-sync.
Don't enable AUTO downloads on their devices for Apps or Music purchases.
Since I also have young kids using these devices:
I have restrictions setup on their devices. I don't allow them to install/delete apps, nor do I allow them to make any account changes on their devices. This way their devices stay in order and get backed up to icloud. I can easily restore their devices if I needed too.
Once in a while I will disable the restrictions so I can update all their apps.
    Hope this helps!

  • Sharing one iTunes library across multiple accounts on the same Mac

Hello, I've poked around at some of the posts dealing with sharing one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac but it seems like this can only be done if the libary is moved to a shared folder. I realize this can be done but I was trying to share it the way it is described in a post on Apple support (See link below.). That post seemed to imply that you don't have to move the library from its original location (owned by account A, e.g.), rather just make a couple preference changes in the accounts, use fast user switching and voila. That doesn't seem to work. So my question is this: Is the only way to share one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac to move it to a shared folder? I'm running 10.4.8 on an Intel iMac. Thanks in advance!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

After reading this and several other related threads, I am becoming thoroughly confused about all of this. I have a situation similar to the one that pokerpal described in the post dated January 7 at 8:06 pm, except that the music files on my system are located on an external hard drive. Everything else is pretty much the same though - I am the admin user (and the main iTunes user and maintainer) and my girlfriend is a standard user who has no music in her own iTunes library. She can see and listen to and make playlists from and sync her iPod with the music in this library from her account, and I can do the same thing, independent of her, from my account. And if I make a change to information within a song, she doesn't see it, and vice versa, and I understand that. What I don't understand is why when I add a song or an album to the music files by importing a CD or downloading something from the iTunes Music Store, she has no way of knowing that unless I tell her, and then she can add it to her library by using the "Add to Library" function. Is there no way of automatically updating her library files to add the new song(s)? We have almost 15,000 songs and videos in that library, and I don't even want to think about what might have to happen if the answer to my question is "no." Interestingly enough, if I put an update to a Word document in the same exact location (on the hard drive), we can update that and pass it back and forth all day - why is that such a difficult task for iTunes to accomplish?
Sorry I went on so long, but this has been building up for some time, and none of the solutions I've read about here have really been of any help, so I'm a bit frustrated and, as I said at the beginning, confused.

  • Share one iTunes library on a SMB share between PC & Mac

    Hi,
Is there anyway I can share one iTunes library and the music files on a SMB share between a PC and a Mac? I assume there would be a problem with how the Mac and PC assign network drives differently would be an issue, or is there a way around this?
At the moment I'm only sharing the music files on the SMB share but with separately iTunes library on the PC and Mac.

I have itunes match. its good but its not perfect. it downloads wrong versions of songs. for example it downloads the censored version of many of my songs. plus it doesnt do podcasts, movies, tvshows, books.
plus it doesnt show my smart playlists in the same track order as on my computer. its good but it has bugs and shortcomings.
thanks for the suggestion but i'd like to try the way i initially posted about.

  • Can I have multiple computers accessing one iTunes library simultaneously?

I've purchased a Lacie Network HD that I'm keeping all of my iTunes on. I've put an alias to the iTunes library from that drive in the music folders of the computers I want to access and update it. That all works well. The only problem is that both computers cannot have iTunes running at the same time. I get an error stating that the library is locked. It would appear that I can't have multiple computers accessing the library at the same time. Is there a work around for this aside from doing network sharing via iTunes? The reason I don't want to do that is that I want both computers to have access to the actual files if I'm using the various iLife apps that use iTunes.

This is true. It's not a server app.
The nearest thing would be a library file on each machine pointing to the same set of music files. However, you might have problems if both machines try to access a particulat track at the same time. Also, changes made on one machine would not be reflected in the other. So if you rip a CD on one, the files will also have to be 'imported' to the other.

  • Can't access my iTunes on my external hard drive

I have been putting my music (both downloaded from iTunes and burned from my CDs) onto an external hard drive and until this week, it's worked out well. Recently, I had a friend take off Windows Vista (it came with my laptop) and install Windows XP. In essence, I have a new computer, I guess. When I open iTunes, it doesn't show all my music in my library. There must be an easy way to show what's in my external hard drive, but I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Can the computer use the hard drive outside of iTunes?
Nope, so I'm contacting the manufacturer too. It seems like the problem might be with the drive.

  • 3 PC's accessing one iTunes on a NAS

I moved all my music to a shared folder on my NAS. When I log in from my desktop PC, I have my playlists and such. I want my wife to be able to open itunes on her laptop and see the same music but have her own playlists displayed on her itunes. Is there a way to do this? I tried once but when I pointed her laptop to the NAS iTunes basically displayed a mirror of my playlists and such.
    TIA

Yes; you can have up to five iTunes Store accounts authorized on any one system.

  • I transferred my itunes to an external hard drive from my mac, now all of my music needs to be located. Help...

I moved my itunes library to an external hard drive, now all of the music says it needs to be located. Not sure, but I believe it is not directed properly.

if you do iTunes > Preferences> Advanced you can change the location of where your music is stored.  Click on change location and direct it to your external hard drive.  Of course, your external hard drive will need to be connected to your computer to play the music.
When you moved your music to an external hard drive, did you copy the folders or move the folder off your computer completely? I copied the folders, and left iTunes folder in my Music folder and all seems to work fine. one hitch can be is that your Library in iTunes will list all of your content, but if you have some albums on the hard drive of your computer and some on your external hard drive, iTunes will need to be told where to locate these files.

  • How to Share One iTunes Media Folder on a Windows Laptop and Mac Laptop

I have an HP EX490 Home Server setup. I want to use the Music Share volume to act as the home for all of our music. I am using a MacBook Pro and my wife is using a Dell Windows Vista Laptop. I have my iTunes pointing to the iTunes Media Folder on the Music Share. The iTunes Library resides on my laptop in Music/iTunes/Library. I used the consolidate library feature and it moved all the music to the appropriate iTunes folder on the Share. Now I want to do that with the Windows Vista Laptop. I have the Vista laptop pointing to the Share for the iTunes Media folder location. The question is how do I add the files to her library? Do I "consolidate library" again or just "add folder to library"? Also do I keep the boxes checked "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" under the Advanced Tab in Preferences? Would greatly appreciate the help. Lots of music/videos and only want to do this once.
    Thanks in Advance

    Good!

Go to your File menu and use the command Add Folder to Library. When the dialog comes up, point it to the Music folder in the Share area. But read on first...
Also do I keep the boxes checked "Keep iTunes Media folder organized"
You must turn off the "Keep..." option. Otherwise, when one of you changes a tag, iTunes will re-"organize" and the other person's iTunes will lose the link.
The "Copy..." option should also be turned off. As you add new music, put it where you want it. Then you must "Add File to Library" from each iTunes.

  • I cant access my itunes library

I accessed my itunes library (on external hard drive) on another MAC and then when I tried accessing same itunes on my PowerBook I keep getting the following message "The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read becuase it was created by a newwer version of itunes. Would you like to downlaod itunes now?" The only options are quit or download itunes.
As I have a Powerbook G4 MAC OS X 10.5.8 and Itunes 10.6.3 (25) I can not download newer itunes and now I can not access my Itunes.
I cant even access the pop up window to allow me to choose/create a itunes library.
    Please help!!!!

Using the drive with a Mac with a newer iTunes version irreversibly altered your library on the drive.
Move the library.itl file on the external to the trash.
Go to the "old libraries" folder on the external and drag the most recent version to the location where the library.itl file used to be.  Rename it library.itl
Start iTunes on the older computer.
Do not use an iTunes library with computers running different versions of itunes.
