Accessing photos from an iPhoto disc
I have several years worth of discs burned from iPhoto as backups. When put them in my computer, they show up in iPhoto '08 and I can view them etc. but if I want to copy the file to my computer, iPhoto won't let me. The Export function is dimmed out in iPhoto, when I right-click and select "Show Original File" all it does is take me to the disc's main directory, and if I try dragging the file to the desktop the FInder says I don't have the right access privileges. I had to go through GraphicConverter's browse function to find the photo and copy it.
The only thing I seem to be able to do is copy a photo back into the iPhoto Library, but this is kind of a hassle if I just want to copy the file to my desktop quickly and email it to someone, for example, then delete it. Why wouldn't iPhoto discs behave the same as your Library?
I tried this with discs burned both in this version of iPhoto and older ones.
first it sounds like you have a referenced library rather than a managed libraryh (in preferences the copy items to iPhoto Library is NOT checked) - this is one of the MANY reasons that it is recommended that you use a managed library rather than a referenced library. Is that the way you have the preferences set?
If the disk containing the photo you want is in your cd drive I would think that you could export the photo from iPhoto - although I've never done that since I use a managed library exclusively.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
Quit iPhoto.
Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine. (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested. -
Say for instance that I go to My Space and I want to place some pictures into my profile. I click Choose File and I search for my photos but they are all locked inside of iPhoto. I select the iPhoto icon but I cannot choose any photos from within there to upload to MySpace. As a workaround I open up iPhoto and then browse to find the selected pics I want to use and then drag them to my desktop. Now, when I go to browse for the pics I can find and access them from my Desktop.
Is this the only way to do this? I find it just another step to have to go though when I should only have to click on the iPhoto icon to browse for the pics in there.

The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There has never been a version of iPhoto where rooting through the Library folder was required on recommended. In fact, any time you access the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other app you risk damaging the library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.

To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:

Accessing photos from iPhoto 09
I just want to control the photos myself, open them in Photoshop or move or copy them. Where are they? They are mine and I want them. I am not particularly interested in iPhoto.

What happens if a folder is simply duplicated and the copy is then removed to the desktop.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
I want to do this to share a group of photos without exporting them from iPhoto.
What do you mean by "share"? WIth who? On the same mac? On the same network?

I cannot email photos from within iPhoto (v. 9.5.1). When I hit send I get a message: "Your email did not go through because the server did not reply." This happens for both my iCloud account and my Shaw account. What to do???
Are you able to email from Mail with those two accounts? If so:
1 - go to iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and delete both accounts. Now add them back and try again.
2 - a better solution IMO is to set Mail as the email client for iPhoto is iPhoto's General preference pane. This gives you better access to your contacts, a sent copy of all emails and, if you want a layout similar to iPhoto's, photo layouts located in Mail's stationary. -
Accessing photos outside of iPhoto 08
I'm having trouble accessing my photos from anything except iPhoto. When I upload them from my camera using iPhoto, I let iPhoto determine the file structure. In the previous version, I could click in iPhoto Library through the finder and browse directly to the location of the photos. Now, I cannot open the iPhoto library through the finder. This means I can't do anything with my photos outside of iPhoto - I can't upload them or edit them with Photoshop or anything unless I make a copy, which is a total waste. Am I doing something wrong? Why can't I access my photos outside of iPhoto?

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic. Also, many applications support drag and drop from the iPhoto Window - for instance Mail and AddressBook.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
Finally, why not set Photoshop as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo:...) That way when you click on a pic to edit it will open automatically in PS and when you save it in PS it will be returned automatically to iPhoto.

Looking to transfer photos from several iphoto 6 sources to new iphoto
Hey all,
So I just got a new macbook pro. i want to transfer all my previous photos to my new iphoto. heres the thing i have prob 3-4000 pics that are saved in 4 seperate places (all by simply copying/ backing up the Iphoto Library folder)
I have:
1 iphoto library folder on my old powerbook
1 on my G5
1 on a firewire drive
1 on another firewire drive.
these are all iphoto 6 libraries
i dont care about transferring over the library files or saving the albums because only 1 of these libraries actually has some orginized albums and i'm going to be going thru and reorganizing all once i get them in the same library.
Can i simply just drag all the "originals" folders to the new iphoto's originals folder?
or do i have to drag the contents (photos/vids) of these originals folders into iphoto?
again i just want the pics in my new iphoto. i dont care about albums and i never did any retouching or editing in iphoto

Can't access photos from prior tobut 1/27/10. Thu ide to desktop. Giant "!" appears.
Can't access photos from prior to 1/27/11. Thumbnails appear, but can't open, email or move them to desktop. Giant "!" appears.
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -
I cannot email photos from either Iphoto or something on web to recipient.
I used to but cannot any more email photos from my Iphoto or something on a web page to a recipient.
If you are referring to iPhoto on your Mac go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and delete the email account there. Reboot, launch iPhoto and add it back.
If that's unsuccessful change iPhoto's email client to Mail in iPhoto's General preference pane. IMO that's a better solution as you automatically get a sent copy and have easier access to Contacts. Also if you need a template for photos Mail has some under the Stationary menu.

Just upgraded to Lion an am discovering that I cannot send email photos from within iPhoto. Error message says bad Internet connection or server not working, when that's not the case. Never happened in Snow Leopard! Help!!!

you can try setting Mail as your email client - it resolves this pfoblem for some people

Is there a way to move photos from one iPhoto library to another? I tried to use export, and that puts the photos in the other iPhoto library (I can see the photo if I open Hard drive>user>pictures>iPhoto Library but when I open iPhoto it is not in that Library's library.

I have bought an external disk so i can free the space on my laptop by moving photos and now I have to buy some software in order to do that??
You don't have to buy it. What's more the free version of iPhoto Library Manager will move up to 20 pics at a time. And the paid version is only $20.
BTW: you can run an entire library from the external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I'm trying to import photos from my iphoto library, but keep getting a message saying I cant import from 7.1.5, that I need to upgrade to 7.1.5 or later. But I have version 8.1.2. I don't know what to do. I've been able to import in the past.
Sounds like an issue with the iPhoto Library
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I get a window with grey lettering that says: "Open Itunes to populate this list" or "Open iphoto to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list. I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.
After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro (Late 2011) with OS X Mavericks 10.9.5
Last week, my 500 GB Harddrive had 120 GB free space. I was feeling crumby and decided to make productive use of taking a day off to lounge around. I snuggled up with my laptop and dedicated hours to meticulously combing through my iPhoto Library. I had 13,000 pictures, and I got rid of those I didn't want. Having said "sayōnara" to about 6,500 pictures, I then emptied the iPhoto trash and the Finder trash. I took delight in the iconic paper crumpling sound of them vanishing into the digital void.
Everything seemed perfect: the photos I loved were still there, the photos I loathed were gone, both trashes were beautifully empty. Having thrown away all of those awful, boring, and unflattering images of poorly light lunches and selfies gone wrong, my iPhoto library was half the size as before! I felt renewed, a little lighter, somehow more free, and I expected my hard drive to be a bit different to.
I eagerly checked my storage stats. My heart sank to see that my 120 GB of free space, was still only 120 GB of free space. I restarted my MacBook; this did not help. I restarted it the next day; this also did not help. It's been 5 days and the hard drive still has 120 GB free space. This is not an emergency and it will probably be a good while before I clutter my laptop to the brim. Yet while I am glad I don't have to see cringeworthy pictures of my ex's unmentionables every time I'm showing off things I do want to remember, I'm still disappointed and now obsessed with solving this mystery.
What is going on? I don't see them, so where are they hiding? How do I get the free space I should have earned from throwing away 1,000's of photos?!Thank you, Terence!
Yes, I only emptied the trash when it was really full, once I waited until the trash cans contained 2,600 photos and then I emptied them - Oooops! In the future, I'll keep in mind your suggestion of deleting less than 100 photos at a time.
I downloaded the iPhoto Library Manager and used it to rebuild my iPhoto. After a few hours of rebuilding, it generated a new copy of my iPhoto Library. This versions was nearly identical to the original (it was missing 5 photos and was therefore only 5 mb smaller). I guess my Library wasn't defective.
I checked my storage stats, and interestingly, using iPhoto Library Manager did help with the problem that developed after I re-indexed my hard drive. My hard drive is able to properly recognize data categories again, instead of listing almost everything as "Other". Understandably, my free disk space changed from 120 GB to about 60 GB, because my hard drive now contained a second copy of my iPhoto Library as well as iPhoto Library Manager. It seemed like all I needed to do was throw these away, but when I emptied the trash, my problem was not solved. My Hard drive now looked like this:
It appears to me that when I empty the trash, the things I throw away are just hanging around as backups instead of leaving! I went into System Preferences and turned of my time machine OFF. Now my hard drive looks likes this:
The back ups of the iPhoto files, and the program which I deleted, are still on my hard drive some where but now they are listed as "Other" instead of "Backups". Do you know where they might be and how I can delete them for good?
