Accessing Pooled Virtual Desktops via RDP Client vs RDWeb

Hello,
We have a Windows 2012 R2 Pooled Virtual Desktop PoC set up and can be accessed via RDWeb.   We need to be able to access the pooled desktops via the RDP client.  How can you specify the name of your Pooled Desktop Collection in the RDP client
vs connecting directly to an individual desktop?

Hi,
To connect to the virtual desktop collection:
1. Open Internet Explorer (or other browsers).
2. In the Internet Explorer address bar, type the address of your RD Web Access server and then press Enter. For example,  https://rdwa1.contoso.com/RDWeb.
3. Click Continue to this website (not recommended).
4. In the Domain\user name box, type the user name.
6. In the Password box, type the password for the use, and then click Sign in.
7. Click the name of your Collection, and then click Connect.

  • I have to login twice to access a Virtual Desktop in a pooled environment

I have multiple virtual desktop collections and I've noticed something strange about each collection.  If I try and connect to any of them, I double click on the shortcut and it asks for my username and password.  Then it makes it "estimating
connection quality" where the box just disappears and the connection is lost.
If I load the connection again (click the shortcut, and insert my username and password), I connect fine.  But if I wait awhile the same thing happens again.
Has anyone seen this before?  I'm not getting anything really out of the logs and I was hoping someone might have ideas/suggestions?

    Hi Jacob,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you set any session time limit setting? It might happens that if you have set any session time limit, then you there might be disconnection due to time limit. You can check below GPO setting for session time limit.
Configure Timeout and Reconnection Settings for Remote Desktop Services Sessions
When you are connecting with RDP, click on Experience Tab and choose “Detect connection quality automatically” and check the result. Also would like you to suggest to update RDP version to RDP 8.1 for better feature and functionality.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

    Hi Krishna,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
When you are configuring RDVH initially, please see that you have meet prerequisites. Remember that you need these pre-requirements:
    • Database based on SQL Server 2008 R2
    • Static IP Address for all Broker
    • Round Robin DNS
    • All RD Broker must be members of AD Windows Group (es. RDCB Server Group)
    • The group must be insert into SQL Server as sysadmin ONLY for the DB creation. After that DB will be created give the db_owner permission only for their DB
    More information.
Windows Server 2012 R2: Unable Add New VDI Template
In addition, we need all RD Broker must have the same SQL Native Client as main SQL Server (es. SQL Server 2012 SP1). The Connection Broker server's computer account MUST be a member of the local administrators group on the Virtual Host (RDS Host) machine and
then reboot the server. Finally check the result.

  • How can FTP users access my NAS system via FTP client?

I recently purchased a 2 bay, 4TB Buffalo Link Station DUO in order to solve some FTP issues.  I have about 50 users outside my LAN that need to connect drop files on my NAS, however nobody seems able to connect via FTP client.  If they login using the Web Access Dynamic DNS address they can read and write via their web browser, but it's clunky and slow.
My NAS system has been given the IP adress of 192.168.1.254 which seem to me that it's a local IP adress, not a public/static IP. Do I need to manually assign an IP adress to my NAS system in order fot users to log into that specific IP and go directly to the shared folders on the NAS system?
    Thanks in advance!

Your NAS is getting that IP because it is behind your Router, which is the normal way to use it and as it should be.
You can not ASSIGN a public IP you your NAS. Only your ISP can do that and usually that incures an extra cost for more than 1 Public IP address. Usually included with a Business account and most of the time only available with a Business account. ISP do not want home owners running FTP or Mail servers on a residential acounts.
As noted you have to forward the noraml FTP port, port 21, in your Router to the IP of the NAS. Since you already have that port forwarded to your Mac, which I have no idea why you did that, you have to either change that port forwarding to the NAS IP or make the FTP server on the NAS respond to some other port and forward that on the router to the IP of the NAS. The to access the NAS FTP server you have to enter the piblic IP address of your router followed with a :and port #. XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:22 or whatever port # you assign to the FTP server on the NAS.

  • Cannot access Virtual Machine via RDP

    Hi all,
I created a Virtual Machine 2012 Data center gallery last night, and I now cannot rdp into it.  It is using port 3389 for both public and private.  When I ping my VM, I get a request time out.  Any ideas what might be happening?  Thanks.
    Eric

    Hi,
Good to hear that and thanks for your feedback.
Just to add, if you delete the VM and keep its disks, then use the disk to recreate a new VM, the data on the temporary driver(D:) would be lost on the old VM.
    Best regards,
    Susie

  • Accessing RDS virtual desktop pool

I Have a server that is running RDS gateway, and RDS virtual hosting. I can attach to it with the same computer from multiple WAN networks except one, the one I can't connect with is behind a TMG 2010 server it gets stuck at the "initiating remote
session" status. I'm thinking I am missing a published rule allowing the connection from the internal network.

    Hi Darren,
Firstly, have you recieved any error messages or logs on the TMG server?
In addition, accoding to your deployment, maybe you need to import the SSL certificate to the TMG server and create a Web listener and Web publishing rule on the TMG server. For more detailed information, please refer to the link below:

  • Accessing RDS Host servers via RDP that are behind a connection broker

Hello!  I've noticed this behavior where I can no longer RDP to the RDS Host I want after it's been added to the connection broker (by server name or IP).  The connection broker load balances me to any available rds host rather than the one i
need to get to.  Is there a trick to allow direct access to a host for administration?

    Hi,
Please use the /admin command line switch when you need to administer a specific RDSH that is part of a collection, like this:

  • Hi i am a teacher and am looking to buy an iPad - we use SIMS (this isnt compatable with an IPad) but i can log into it via a virtual desktop.  What wold be the best iPad to buy?

    hi there
im looking to buy an ipad- we use SIMS at school and i need to be able to log into it.  I can via a virtual desktop via the college wireless netork.  I also have work on the network.  What would be the best IPAD to buy?

You have the choice of a full size iPad or the iPad Mini...both come as either WiFi only or WiFi+cellular data service.  With the cellular data model you can see if there is a SIM available that is appropriate.  Either model is capable of attaching to a wireless network to give you access.  Neither is capable of a wired connection, must be wireless.
So, the question is which size is the best for your personal use, and do you want cellular data access - great thing to have.  Then the decision is which storage capacity do you want...keep in mind that the iPad is not upgradable after purchase so get the storage you really want to start out.

  • Pooled - Unmanaged Virtual desktop Collection, 'Existing Virtual Desktop' blank?

I am trying to create a Pooled - Unmanaged Virtual desktop Collection on my Windows Server 2012 R2. I have created a hyper-v virtual machine with hyper-v manager.
But when I go to the server manager to add a new collection of virtual desktop, I chose the "Pooled Virtual desktop collection" radio button and also unchecked the "Automatically create and manage virtual desktops", then I hit next and
it asks me to select Existing Virtual Desktops. However the list there is blank and I don't see the VM that I created in hyper-v manager earlier.
I wonder how can I possibly fix it?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
Did you find any specific error\event ID for this case?
If the virtual desktop does not show up, you should close the wizard, add the virtual machines by using Hyper-V Manager, and then create the collection again.
From your description it seems that there might be some configuration issue while configuration. Please try to configure the whole scenario once again and check the result. You can follow beneath article.

  • What licenses do I need to get a virtual desktop environment up and running?

I’m trying to figure out what licenses I need to get a full Windows Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) up and running with the Remote Desktop Service (RDS) roles.
I have Win.Server 2012 running Hyper-V, which has about 10 different virtual machines (VM) with either Win.7 or Win.8 installed on it. These VMs will act as virtual desktops (VD) for about 200 people to remotely access and use.
My question is, what licenses do I need to support this scenario?
So far, I’m planning to purchase a few Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition with 10 Client Access Licenses ( $1414.19 each). I’m assuming that’s 1 license for the server and 10 Client Access Licenses (CAL) for users who will access the VDs. I’m also planning
to buy about 200 RDS CALs ($149 each) for the rest of the users to access the VDs. Do I need to buy additional licenses for each VM image I create (the 10 images I mentioned earlier)? These VMs are in a pooled virtual desktop collection, so they reset themselves
when users disconnect from them. If I have personal desktop collections which give unique desktops to each user and saves their settings, will my license have to change if I have that too?
At first I thought just buying the RDS CALs will allow me to install windows where ever I want, how many times I want and all I have to worry about is paying for the client access, but do I need to pay for the OS as well? So essentially I’m doubling the
    license?
A side question not really related is, if I have Windows Thin PC, (which was said to come free if I have SA with another product)  and bought the Windows Server license, does that come with SA and I can install Windows Thin PC as many times as I want
on which ever desktop I have that will connect to this VDI system?

The 10 server licenses are fine, but they don't help you with VDI or remote desktops. I you want to install the Remote Desktop Session Host (formerly known as Terminal Server) role on all your servers und provide remote desktops for your 200 users, 200 RDS
CALs are the right choice (per user or per device).
But if your 200 users have access to virtual desktops, you need 200 VDI licenses. It doesn't matter if you only have 10 virtual desktops if potentially all your 200 users have access to them. VDI licensing is not based on a concurrent model, so every client
that can connect to a VM needs its own license. If Windows 8 Enterprise with SA is on all your client devices, you're set because SA gives users access rights to up to 4 Win8 or Win7 VMs concurrently (local or remote). In addition
it gives them a so-called companion subscription license for personally owned, non-primary devices.
For those primary corporate devices that are without SA, you'll need to purchase a single VDA license for each device that connects to any number of your Win7 or Win8 VMs. The same applies to personally owned devices of users who don't have a primary
corporate device with SA. In other words, BYOD is supported if your primary device is under SA.
For neither VDI/SA nor VDA it does matter if users are connecting to different VM images or only one. Typically, they cannot connect to more than 4 VMs at the same time in order to stay within the licensing limits.

  • OfficeJet 8600 won't scan via RDP

    Hello everyone
We've just installed a new multifunctional here in our company.
The computers specified bellow are running Windows XP service pack 3 x86. Our printer is an OfficeJet 8600 all-in-one.
We are using it through cable, in our network, for specific computers, which actually are virtual machines in our main server, accessed by thinclients that runs on Win7 Pro x86/64.
So we configured the printer in the web interface without any problem, we also installed the latest software version in our virtual machines and the printer was recognized successfully and is working properly. We did not install anything refered to this printer in our thinclients.
Our issue is the scanner. Whenever we try to open it, when we're accessing the virtual machine via remote desktop protocol, the device is not found and Windows shows up an error saying:
"It's not possible to scan - It was not possible to find the software of digitalization or the scanner is not connected. Make sure the scanner and the software of digitalization are installed properly."
If we try to scan via the virtual machine manager program, which equals to access the virtual machines locally, the scanner works great.
If we try to scan via a local computers, running either windows xp or 7, the scan never fails.
But as soon as we access any machine via RDP it fails, even if it's not a virtual machine, but a local machine accessed this way, we get that error.
We updated the printer firmware to the latest one, avaliable on HP's site - CLP1CN1304AR.
We also tested with firewalls disabled, unsuccessfully.
We are working with fixed ip on it. We have the wifi turned off. We are not using web services. We did not register the product in the installation procedure.
A curious notable thing is when we try to scan from the printer to the virtual machine, the display shows an error after some time saying that the computer could not be found. I don't know if this could be related to the main issue itself, im just pointing as a possible clue.
We would be thankful for any help or idea to solve our problem!
Thanks for attention, i will be watching the topic!

doesnt HP support remote scanning on HP OJ 8600?

  • Server 2012 RDS - Remote Desktop Connection Broker Client failed to redirect the user domain\username. Error: NULL

    Seeing the error listed here.
The Remote Desktop Connection Broker server could not enumerate the targets for the provider named NULL from the database.
Pooled virtual desktop collection name: NULL
    Error: Error code: 0xFFFFFFFF.
Broker and Hyper-V are on the same physical machine.
Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting this?
Used the happy wizard to create everything, and got no errors.
I have created a small pool collection, and given rights to domain users. Everything "looks" good.

    I have the same problem.
(Making this long hand for those who come after)
I have installed SQl Management Studio Express 2012 SP1
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29062
(You only need the one file "SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe")
    Ran this as Administrator
And typed in the Server Name field
    \\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query
    Then hit connect.
    Expanded Databases (+sign)
    Expanded RDCms
    Expanded Tables
Right Clicked on rds.target, select Edit top 200 rows
Right Clicked and copied, then pasted this into a notepad file on the desktop (As a backup)
Right Clicked and selected Delete to delete the row with the data in it (and PoolID was set to Null in this row)
    Did the same for rds.pool
Manually added Remote Desktop server into the MEMBER OF tab of
“Windows Authorization Access Group” via Active Directory Users and Computers. As this domain was Windows 2003 Native when the RDS server was first installed.
    Rebooted server and same issue>
Checked SQL again and rows had come back.
Is that what you meant by "delete
the rds.target and rds.pool with pool id = NULL"?
Not a SQL guru, so any help appreciated.

  • Virtual Desktops theory questions

    Hello!
Help me please clarify several questions on Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual remote desktop  infrastructure.
Having read the following artcile http://windowsitpro.com/virtualization/virtual-desktop-infrastructure-part-2-finally-vdi
"The Remote Desktop Connection Broker role service is really the brains of the VDI environment. It communicates with and controls the other components, working particularly closely with the Remote Desktop Session Host in redirection mode, which
is why the Remote Desktop Connection Broker and Remote Desktop Session Host
in redirection mode are frequently placed on the same OS instance. However, when you start having more than 250 simultaneous connections, you might need to consider breaking the roles onto separate servers.
Remote Desktop Session Host in Redirection Mode
The concept of using a Remote Desktop Session Host in redirection mode isn’t new.
    Remote Desktop Virtualization Host
The Remote Desktop Virtualization Host role service is installed on any Hyper-V host that will be participating in a VDI pool. This role service lets the Remote Desktop Connection Broker
role service communicate with the Hyper-V hosts, start and stop VMs, and gather internal information to enable client connections."
...I've concluded that RDSH and RDVH are the two separate roles that can be (and should be - according to the Figure1 !) installed onto the two separate OS instances (RDCB + RDSH in Redirection mode on one server and the RDVH on the other).
But when it comes to deploying VDI in practice I don't see how it's possible to separate RDSH in Redirection mode and RDVH services. Moreover, if we look at the following  screenshots...
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2013/04/25/step-by-step-deploying-virtual-desktops-with-windows-server-2012.aspx
...we'll see that on step 1 Add the Roles and features wizard "wants" to deploy the
RDSH service while on step 3 the RDSH service transforms to the
    RDHV service.
Q1) What does this service transformation means?
Q2) Is it possible to have RDSH in Redirection mode and
RDVH services on separate servers in Win2012?
Q3) Is it possible when using pooled virtual desktop collection to set, for example, 2 cores per virtual desktops wich based on Template1 and 1 core per virtual desktops based on Template2?
    Thank you in advance,
    Michael

"With RDSH, you will get RemoteApp, the "terminal sessions". Have you been around during Windows
Server 2003 Tarminal Server? That´s it, but with additional RDWeb. RDSH is pretty much the same as Citrix XenApp overall." -
    yes, I understand.
"You can setup VDI infra with only one server, you will need
RDVH, RDWeb and RDConnector roles, that´s all. You don´t need RDSH role for running VDI.  -
I'm agree... but if I have VDI up and running without RDSH why its item is present on Deployment Overview diagram???  Can't find corresponding documentation anywhere... :(

  • VDA licensing for Virtual Desktops

    Hi,
I always seem to browse thru the VDA Faq everytime I need to do up a proposal for a Desktop Virtualization solution.  Can anyone clarify some things that are vague for me right now.
    1) If current environment all users use OEM machines with Windows XP, say VDI is rolled out using Windows 7.  We know we would need to get the VDA license per device that is about to access the Virtual Desktops.  But how about the Windows 7 Base
OS license itself?  Is there a need to buy 1 Volume License Windows 7 media when preparing the master image using that OS?
    2) How does the VDA usage rights extend when the users primary using it, goes home and uses their own home PCs to connect back to their virtual desktops?  Do we need to get another VDA license for that use?
    Thanks,
