Accessing Preferences Crashes Address Book

I had Mail, Safari, iCal and Address Book open when I tried to merge two cards with duplicate entries in the AB . This almost immediately caused AB to crash,
and got me a message that none of the remaining three applications are responding. As soon as I 'Force Quit' the AB, the other applications seemed to have recovered; however, upon restarting the AB, I found that all of my address cards were gone.
After this, I went into Disk Utility and repaired all permissions just in case. Then I deleted all files in the ~/Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Preferences directories that related to the Address Book, replaced them with the ones I had on a backup disk, and restarted the AB. It now appears to be fine, but fails to respond every time I try to select 'Preferences' so that I have to 'Force Quit' it again. What did I do wrong?
(I also noticed that the overall appearance of the Desktop has changed back to its default value sometime during this process.)
Thanks for your help,
Marija

Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Now, it could be that Address Book's preferences file was corrupt when you did your last back up, so you may try re-creating it anew instead of restoring it from the backup:
1. Quit Address Book.
2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example.
3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate the com.apple.AddressBook.plist file and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

  • Unable to access emails and address book using Firefox 5, but not using explorer

Since installing the latest updated version of Firefox, I can log into my Tiscali email account, but once there I cannot open my emails. Instead of saying 'You have (number) new emails' it says 'You have unspecified new emails'. If I click on Inbox or 'Check new mail', nothing happens at all. Also, if I try to access my address book either to read or edit it again nothing happens.
Emails works perfectly well using Windows Explorer, which would suggest that the problem does not lie with my ISP (Talktalk) or my Tiscali email account.

You can install both your accounts in Thunderbird and then simply move messages from one to the other. You then have the choice to continue using Thunderbird, or to switch using Gmail via its own website.
Address Books are a bit harder to transfer. I'd suggest you go to the msn account, in your browser, and seek options to download or export your address book there. I expect it will offer CSV as an option, and vcard format is a possibilty. Both of these can be imported into Thunderbird and into Gmail.

  • How can I block the access to my address book?

So yeah, the title says it. I actually wanna know how to manage the access of apps to my address book. Just like the location services.
Is there any control panel? I was googling and searching on my iPhone but couldn't find anything.
    albin

Yes, I am. But this example with Instagram doesn't sound like asking for permissions to me. I think that any app can load the contact list in the background and no one would notice it. I mean this is not right. However, it seems like I can't do anything. So yeah, thank you guys for your support.

  • ITunes' iPod preference missing Address Book Groups

Just got an iPod Touch. When I first synced the ipod all of the contacts were from my Entourage account. I wanted them from Address Book. When I go in iTunes, under "Devices" and get the preferences for the iPod, I look under the "contacts" section. There are none of my Address book "groups" to select from. iTunes is not recognizing my Address book.
    How do I fix this?

The Mac specialist over the phone said that my iPod was malfunctioned and needed to be sent in. It ends up that the iPod touch has a few limitations that other iPods I've owned do not have. While my 80 gig video ipod would show all my groups, the iPod touch would not. After about two days of playing around I found out that once I eliminated some of my groups they appeared in iTunes preferences. I don't have an exacts count but I think more then 15 groups is too much for iTunes.
    Problem solved.

  • Access the CE Address Book outside of CE

    Hello all,
I have searched high and low and have not been able to find anything outside of CE that is capable of accessing the CE AB. In my search, I came across the Sun Portal AB channel and the CE Sync but neither of these fits our needs. Ideally, we would like to be able to access the AB using Thunderbird.
If anyone has dealt with this requirement in the past and has some experiences/solutions/disasters to share, please do.
    Regards,
    Kamil.

The future plan is to move towards a more standardised mechanism for address-book (contacts) access, namely CardDAV. This however is still some time off.

  • How do I restore Snow Leopard to access LOCAL entourage address book files?

    Hi,
So in a fit of happiness I decided to upgrade to Lion today. Big mistake. I now realize that my entourage email does not work (Yes, I realize that mail now supports exchange accounts that's fantastic moving forward but...)
I have two email address groups set up in my old entourage which I desperately need for work. I guess they were "local" in my address books on my computer. SO here's my problem: how do I restore to snow leopard so I can use my time machine backup but still keep what was "local" on my mac?
I guess my basic question is does my time machine have EVERYTHING that was on my hard drive? I don't want to get rid of Lion, re-install Snow Leopard and then realize the exact two address book groups on my local computer no longer exist.
How do I re-install Snow Leopard and then restore my entire system?
What a waste of time my entire day was today. FML.
Thank you for your time & help.
    Michelle.

If installing Lion did this, then it's pure coincidence, as an install of Lion does not affect the files and settings of third party apps.  Your Entourage database is stored in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/ Entourage Identities
I suggest you post your qeustion on Microsoft's own forums for Entourage:  http://www.officeformac.com/productforums

  • I want to access my apple address book thru Outlook, I want to access my apple address book thru Outlook

You should contact Microsoft for Mac Support  and/or post in their forums since Outlook is their product, not Apple's.

  • Just moved from PC to iMac-Mavericks and Tbird now crashes when I try to access Address Books.

When entering an email address, Tbird apparently checks address books since it gives me a list of possible addressees as I enter the name. But when I click on the Address Book icon to get in to make a change or new entry, I get an error saying Tbird has encountered a problem and crashed. My options are to quit or restart Tbird. When restarting all is fine again.
I just moved my email, address books, etc to an iMac (first time on such a machine) and thought I'd gotten everything moved per instructions, but apparently did something wrong.

The problem appears to be Reminder Fox. The other add-ons I have are Adblock Plus, Extra Folder Columns, Test Pilot for Tbird and View About. Disabling just Reminder gave me back direct access to the Address Books; toggling others off and on had no effect.
I guess the question now is why. I assume that it there must be something odd about my set up and its interaction with Reminder, or more people would be having this problem. Although I'm content to operate without Reminder, if someone wants to work with me to identify the specific source of the problem, I'm game to do it, but it's not something I'm capable of doing on my own.
Thanks again very much for your help. What a relief to have the Address Books back!

  • Address Book - multiple access

    Hello
I run a small office network of 5 macs and a server all running OSX 10.4, and we really need to all access the same Address Book. So far the only way this seems possible is by syncing the address books between different users, which doesn't really work properly, or by running an LDAP directory on the server, which I have no idea how to set up.
This must be a very common problem for small offices who need to share contact information. I used to use a simple programme called QuickDex which everyone could access on the server, which has now been update for OSX, but would rather use Address Book as its easily accessed from Mail.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help much appreciated
    Thanks
    Buddy

    Go to www.xcnetwork.com
you'll find a very userul service for sharing contacts or iCal events.
We are using it in our small office and it works great

  • One of my 2 address books can no longer be viewed, how do I access it?

''locking this thread as duplicate, please continue at [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1051908 /questions/1051908]''
one of my 2 address books can no longer be viewed, how do I access it? It disappeared within the last few days. I can still find addresses that are in the 2nd address book, but I cannot view it, so only 1/8 of my addresses are now viewable. How do I access the 2nd address book?

Hi ronc2, there isn't a specific setting for this. Firefox's built-in JavaScript settings allow you to control several aspects of scripts*, but unfortunately not this one.
I previously tried to find some other options for individually turning off this event, but I couldn't find a way. Someone might be able to create an add-on to solve this problem, but it will take someone cleverer than I.
Extensions that disable scripts on a site-specific basis:
    * If you regularly visit some sites which do this, you can block JavaScript on that specific site using the YesScript extension. Unfortunately, other script-based functionality will be blocked as well.
    * YesScript does not preemptively block scripts on every site. If you have to visit a lot of random sites and want to take a paranoid approach of having scripting blocked until you see as much of the site as you can see without running scripts, then the NoScript extension would be for you. But even then it's "all or nothing".
''* These include: JavaScript enabled yes/no, override right-click menu yes/no, change order of windows yes/no, move and resize windows yes/no, close windows yes/no, specific features of pop-up windows, change images yes/no, detect copy/cut/paste and modify selection yes/no.''

  • Cannot access address book after software update

I am unable to access the default address book after doing the software update - I restored my backup and everything is there except for my contacts.  When I open my address book it is labeled personal and there are no addresses and when I add a contact it does not show up, but I noticed when I go into options it shows only default under address books with 99 entries and when I try to add a contact it does not show in the list on my phone but the number of entries in the default book goes up so they are going into that one but I cannot access it?  Any idea how I can get my contact list back? (hope this makes sense to someone )
    Thank you
