Accessing shared time capsule disk with two accounts

Hey guys,
I have an airport time capsule (5th gen) and want to access a connected USB disk with my Mavericks macbook. This basically works fine: i can mount it using the finder (usually I do an automatic mount when starting my account, since I put the drive into the Login Items for my user), and the disk is secured with a disk password.
However, I have a quite annoying issue when using two accounts on the same macbook, which is my standard use case as I share the macbook with my wife: Only the user that first accesses the disk can use it, the second user gets a "no access permission" error for the disk. The second user can then disconnect the drive and reconnect, but I find this very annoying, because I have to do it all the time, and I'm wondering if I'm the only user with this problem.
Is there any way to specify access rights for the drive, such that I can access it with both accounts simultaneously? BTW, I've already tried to define specific access rights on the disk (Context Menu > Get Info > Sharing and Permissions), and I tried to change the disk security mode to "With accounts" and "With device password" - none of it made any difference.

Only the user that first accesses the disk can use it, the second user gets a "no access permission" error for the disk. The second user can then disconnect the drive and reconnect, but I find this very annoying, because I have to do it all the time, and I'm wondering if I'm the only user with this problem.
That is how Apple built it. No fixes.. no repairs.. it is a hassle of protected type file systems. Windows you can do all sorts of fudgery.. but the lack of protection (amongst others) is why you use a Mac.
Is there any way to specify access rights for the drive,
This is not a rights issues.. it is that one user at a time is allowed. Each user must logout before the next user can gain access..
I do not know of any workaround.
Pondini recommends using disk image for data on the TC.. since you can otherwise mess up the TM backup. See http://pondini.org/TM/TCQ3.html
His comments don't apply to your usage of the USB drive.. but his workaround may help.
I am wondering if you create the sparsebundle on the USB drive and allow everyone access, once mounted on the computer it might allow two user accounts access at the same time.. Sorry I have no need to try it and I cannot recall anyone attempting.. but it might present a way around the issue.. !!

  • Access to Time Capsule Disk via MobileMe Web

I would like to see my Time Capsule Disk appear in my MobileMe account when I'm logged into it via Safari, similar to the way my MobileMe iDisk shows up on my MobileMe login via a browser. Is this possible?

no. You won't be able to access it via mobileme website. although using mobileme login details, you will see it as a drive in your finder window if you set it up right.

  • I can no longer access my Time Capsule disk

After upgrading to SL, I can't connect to the disk in my Time Capsule. It shows up in the Shared part of the Finder sidebar as usual, but clicking on it generates a gray bar that says "Connection Failed." On the right-hand side of this bar is a "Connect As' button, and clicking this gives an error popup that says: "There was an error connecting to the server “Wonderland”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator." I don't know how to change the server name or IP address, and when I enter the IP directly from "Connect to Server" I get the same error message. Trying to set up the disk in Time Machine also gives the same error.
The odd thing is that the disk is visible in Airport Utility, which even tells me how much space is being used. "Enable file sharing" is still checked.
Any ideas what I can do?

Sad to report that unplugging and re-plugging the hard drive did not help. I had high hopes!
Un-mounting and re-mounting the external hard drive didn't help either.
I've moved on to deleting the time machine preferences per another suggestion in another thread - still no luck.
I continue to get the Making Backup Disk Available warning in the Time Machine Preferences window as the little progress bar spins for 20+ minutes. The whole time, I can hear the external hard drive clicking and chirping like it's being accessed- then the Time Machine preference window reports the same past warning: *The backup disk image “/Volumes/300GB BACKUP/myname’s Mac mini_00254bb40536.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error 109)*
Off to cruise some more forums for a possible fix - suggestions continue to be welcome!

  • MacBook Air 11" can't access Time Capsule Disk

    Hi:
I have two Minis, a MPB 13" and a MBA 11" connected to my Time Capsule. My MBP and the two Minis can access the Time Capsule disk with no problem. It's a different story for the MBA.
From the MBA, I can see my Time Capsule in Finder (Bonjour) and I can click on it, however the disk never appears. Clicking "connect as" doesn't do anything either. From Finder if I go "connect to server" and I type the IP address of my Time Capsule it connects without problems, but it won't connect with its name.
I am able to connect the disk on my other Macs from the MBA via Bonjour, just not the Time Capsule. As mentionned earlier, the Time Capsule disk is available from my other Macs and even from Windows.
I rebooted a few times and confirmed that the username/password are properly saved in the keychain of my MBA.
Any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Are your other Macs connected via Wifi or ethernet? It sounds like some sort of network configuration issue. If they are connected via Wifi then I'd make sure the MBA has the same settings for it's network. Alternately I'd get rid of the keychain entry on the MBA and re-enter it to make sure it's correct. As a last resort I'd restart the Time Capsule and see if it makes a difference. I'm connecting a MBA to a Time Capsule so it should work.

  • Access Time Capsule disk from iOS device (iPad, iPhone)

My intended goal is to use Time Capsule disk as cloud replacement for MobileMe iDisk which is being discontinued in June.
I've done Time Capsule 7.6.1 update with iCloud support, entered my iCloud account settings, and authorized disk access via WAN. Everything appears to be configured properly as I can access my Time Capsule disk on Mac computers from outside my home network. How do I access this disk on iPhone and iPad?

I use FileBrowser app. It works. Their latest version is much easier to configure than earlier versions. You need to turn file sharing on and SMB on your time capsule disk.
I use the time capsule disk to store a few files which I never want to be on my iPhone or iPad, but do want access to them. They are not backed up on the time capsule but since they also exist on my Mac, they are backed up from there.

  • Time Capsule Disk Doesn't Appear in Finder or Disk Utility

I have a 500G Time Capsule (single band, I think) that I want to partition (just into disk images, not volumes) so that I can maintain separate-sized locations for my family's music library, photos, and Time Machine backups for the non-media files on each of a Mac Mini and 4 laptops.  But I will ask more about that later.
My more immediate problem is that the Time Capsule Disk Volume generally just doesn't appear in my Finder or in Disk Utility at all.  A couple weeks ago, for some reason, it did appear once and I took the opportunity to create a 215G Disk Image--leaving 250G for the rest of the Disk Volume which was indicated as having 465G rather than 500G actually available.  But since then (as before) the Time Capsule volume hasn't appeared in Disk Utility at all, and only rarely in the Finder.
In the Finder the Time Capsule appears under the Shared heading in the left panel, with the Time Capsule disk volume appearing as a folder in the right panel (if it connects, which it usually requires a password for, but sometimes it doesn't...).  If I open the folder then the right panel goes blank (indicating, I think, that I have opened the volume but there is nothing inside) and the volume (usually) eventually shows up under my own Mac in the Devices heading.  (That is, the Time Capsule disk volume shows up along with Network, Macintosh HD, and Remote Disk in the right Finder panel when I select my Mac under Devices in the left Finder panel.)  At that point the TC volume shows up in the Finder as a 220G Volume and the disk image shows up indented under it as a 215G Disk Image; indented under the Disk Volume there is also a 5G Sparsebundle file from a Time Machine backup.  If I open the 220G Disk Volume in the right Finder panel then it shows only the 215G Disk Image and the 5G Sparsebundles in the right Finder panel.  This seems to suggest that the 215G Disk Image and the 5G Sparsebundles are both treated as 'used' and the 220G size given for the Disk Volume represents what is left (although 215+5+220=440, so where the extra 25G went I don't know).
If I open the 215G Disk Image in the right Finder panel then, after a while, it shows up as a Disk Image in the right Finder panel when my Mac is selected under Devices in the left panel.  I can create folders in the Disk Image and copy documents to those folders, at least.
But in any case, regardless of whether I open the 220G Disk Volume or the 215 Disk Image in the Finder, the Disk Volume never appears in Disk Utility so there is no possibility of reformatting it.  The 215 Disk Image has sometimes shown up in Disk Utility (and once it apparently allowed me the option of partitioning the Disk Image into further Disk Images), but sometimes it doesn't show up and I haven't been able to figure out why it does or doesn't.
I find this all very confusing and the Finder and Disk Utility behavior seems downright erratic.  I'm not sure whether something is broken or if I just don't understand how it works (starting with the difference between the Devices and Shared headings in the left Finder Pane).  I would appreciate any advice on how I can reliably access the Time Capsule disk volume in the Finder and Disk Utility.  Thanks.

Same problem after 10.8.2 update yesterday,
Time Machine functions but disk does not mount in finder.
The disk also shows up in disk utility when TM is running
as mounted (beneath a sparse image file) but not visible.
Is this a bug, or a feature?

  • Time Capsule Hangs with USB Drive Connected after installing 10.5.6 update

The 10.5.6 update basically made my External USB Disk connected to the Time Capsule unusable. I've repaired the permissions as suggested in other posts - this did not fix the problem.
I was unable to perform any incremental backups initially after the 10.5.6 update, so I archived my sparsebundle and created a new one by doing a full fresh backup - which completed successfully. However, after the backup, I was unable to connect to the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to the Time Capsule via Finder - when trying to connect, my computer hangs and I'm forced to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND the Time Capsule, if I just restart one or the other the problem persists. If I let the connection attempt run long enough I get an "Error Code: -8072" message and still have to do a hard restart. After the hard restart of my computer and Time Capsule I'm able to connect to the Time Capsule and the USB drive connected to Time Capsule just fine. However, once the Time Machine backup runs again - the same problem returns, I can no longer access the Time Capsule or the USB drive connected to Time Capsule via Finder and have to do a hard restart of BOTH my computer AND Time Capsule. This 10.5.6 update has been havoc, anyone have the same troubles or ideas for resolving this? Before updating to 10.5.6 my system was working flawlessly with Time Capsule and the connected USB drive.
UPDATE: I've just verified that this problem only occurs with my external LaCie Hard Drive connected to Time Capsule via USB. If I disconnect my LaCie Hard Drive from the Time Capsule and restart the Time Capsule everything works fine (backups, access to Time Capsule Disk from Finder). If I connect the LaCie Hard Drive via USB to the Time Capsule, I am able to access the LaCie Hard Drive in Finder UNTIL the next Time Machine backup. After the first Time Machine backup with the USB drive connected, I can no longer access the USB drive from Finder - Finder hangs and eventually produces "Error Code: -8072". If I disconnect the USB drive, then plug it back in - Finder no longer hangs and I can access the drive connected to Time Capsule until the next backup occurs.
Anybody have ANY ideas? This worked fine before the 10.5.6 update!

I am having a similar problem. Never tried it before installing 10.5.6, but have a Time Capsule (500GB) with a 1TB WD MyBook Essential Edition connected via USB. Hardware is password protected by authorized users of network and needs separate login to access. When I initially set it up, it worked fine (though too difficult to set up). The WD storage drive showed up in Finder window as a subset of the Time Capsule after clicking on the Time Capsule icon. I had an "-8072" error message yesterday that I ignored, but then the file contents of the WD storage drive took forever to be viewed in Finder (though video files could be accessed wirelessly). Today started having a problem... coincidentally?... after a Time Machine backup, and got the message: "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -8072)." Now I am unable to get into the WD drive when I click on "Connect As" on the Time Capsule icon in the Finder menu... I just get the -8072 error. I no longer even see the Time Capsule disk as a subset of the Time Capsule icon in the Finder Toolbar.
    What is going on???

  • How do I access my time capsule over the internet

How do I access my time capsule over the internet. I've already set it up to share over WAN, but I have ATT so my TC is connected to the router provided by ATT can I still access my TC via the internet even though its not directly connected to the Ethernet?

The TC should be in bridge mode.. not setup to share over wan.. that will never work. That is assuming you haven't bridged the ATT router.
Once you bridge the TC see if you can setup BTMM using icloud settings in the TC. As per the Apple docos.. here.
You should also be able to directly access the TC since you have a router with dyndns client at a guess.. the setup is simply forward port 548 to the TC.
Google search this.. there is huge number of resources available. eg

  • How to access a shared disk with two users account on same Mac

I am seeking how to share / access at same time with two accounts on a same Mac a disk that is shared with a TC or an AEBS. When a user account is connected to the shared drive and when I switch to the 2nd user this 2nd user cannot access / see the content of the shared drive and it receives an error message. I want to use this shared drive to store some GB of movies I do not want to have on my MacBook Pro SSD but still bring able to access them from the two accounts that are set on my Mac. Just like for an internal drive. I have tried all I could but it does not want to work. How do I do that ? Thanks.

  • How do I access Time Capsule Remotely with iCloud?

Before, with MobileMe, I was able to backup and access my Time Capsule anywhere in the world because I had my MobileMe login stored in my Time Capsule, and my MobileMe entered into my mac.
So when I was at home it would backup through the local network and when remote it did it through the internet.
Once upgrading to iCloud this broke (even though I entered my iCloud info into the time capsule).
Apple apparently fixed this with an update:
The latest Airport Base Station Update 7.6.1 "provides support for remote access to an AirPort disk or a Time Capsule hard drive with an iCloud account."
However, I'm still unable to do it. Is there instructions some where on how to do it with the latest Airport Utility / iCloud?
Note, yes I could do it with port forwarding but that would require that I have a static IP and like most all residential users I don't have a static IP and can't afford to pay 180+ for a business account to have one. And yes, you can use something like DynDNS but that only works if you have an extra computer at home and that its always on. I only have one machine and its my laptop that I bring with me. MobileMe acted like a DynDNS on the Airport to make Back2Mac work and supposively iCloud should do the same.
Also in Airport Utility next to my iCloud login it shows a green icon (so it's connected).
    Thanks in advance!

There is some new info posted by apple.. and links to more setup as well.

I haven't done it.. as I refuse to move to Lion while the networking is so kludgy.

  • Cannot Access Time Capsule Disk from Boot Camp

    Hi,
I've set up a Time Capsule and I've been able to read and write from:
    1) My MacBook Pro and another MacBook
    2) A Windows XP (SP3) PC connected by Ethernet
3 )A Dell Laptop running Windows XP (wirelessly)
I can copy files to and from the disk and perform Time Machine Backups (on the Macs).
However, I have not been able to even connect to the disk (but I can use the internet normally) on the Time Capsule on my MacBook Pro Boot Camp Windows XP SP3. I can connect wirelessly and surf the net on the 5 Ghz (and 2.4 Ghz) (non-public/Guest Shared) network. (The password I entered to access the disk are the same on all machines listed, which was not confused with the Network Password) Does anyone face such a problem or know the cause/fix?
    Thank You in advance.

  • ARD&TC Apple Remote Desktop & Time Capsule (disk access, remote management)

    Hello!
Could You help me? I have two problems with access to my Time Capsule.
I have wireless network at home based on Time Capsule, with *one static IP*. I have conected it (wireless) with two iMac's. Me and my girlfriend we have also two macbooks and when we are out of home we want to acces data on our Time Capsule disk. I need access to disk to edit data on it while being long way out of home. Second problem is to access data on our iMac's. I bought Apple Remote Desktop software, it's incredible what it can do but only when I'm connected to my wireless network LAN. I need to control my iMac while being out of home. How to configure Time Capsule and ARD to acces disk and control iMac's? Let me remind You that I have *one static IP for Time Capsule router WAN*. Please help and I would be very very thankful for screenshots of configuraion, I'm newbie in this.
    Thank You very much.
    Kind regards.
    Adam Milwiw-Baron

Yeah for some reason I cannot get this to work right. Even if I scan the 5 VPN IP's I have setup I cannot see their machines when I am connected to the VPN. I tested it the other day by connecting one of the systems to an outside internet connection, then logged it into the VPN. I then connected my own to a different source and logged into the VPN, but Remote Desktop just won't find it.
Just not sure why it doesn't work. I can see the computers on our internal network though, just not any connected via VPN.

  • Time Capsule disk access SLOW!   2TB - Dual band

I have a Time Capsule (2TB, Dual Band, Firmare at 7.4.2)
Its been working like a dream, backing up 3 Macs for the last 8 months.
I also use it for connecting two or three other disks via USB and then making those accessible over the LAN, and there is also about 100GB of data on the Time capsule disk itself that i use as a dump for files so i can get to them from anywhere on my LAN.
Lately I started to notice EXTREMELY slow disk access, even when i am connected via ethernet (1000 base) - and equally when I am connected via wifi (n)
for example, copying over a 2Mb photo can take minutes when it should take seconds.
i've been trying to figure out whats going on here for a while and so i checked out the sizes of the backup files.. the sparseimages that time machine creates.
one of them was nearly 1TB, while another was around 500GB and the other was around 120GB
that plus my data meant there was only about 300GB free on the 2TB disk.
I have a feeling the slowness could be down to extreme fragmentation of the drive... ??
so i decided to dump the backup files and copy off my other data and do a erase of the disk and start again.. but get this.. i can't even delete the 1TB file ! I have been trying for about 3 days now and it just will not delete.. i get the Deleting msg box and it just sits there, literally ALL night...
i know it isn't just hanging on the Mac (10.6.4) because deleting the other two images also took a long time (but not this long!)
i can't just wipe the disk now because i can't get my other data off either.. I have tried copying it over the network and onto a USB disk connected directly to the Time Capsule, but 3 days later and i'm still copying files..
to put some context into this, I copied over 1.8Gb today and it took about 4 hours...
has anyone had this problem before?? what on earth is going on?? is it down to fragmentation, or something else?? the TC has been working fine up until a few weeks ago when i started to notice slow speed.
    any ideas ?
    thanks
    Adam

if anyone ever has this issue ....
it must have been EXTREME fragmentation. I bought another 2TB external disk, connected it to the TC, did a complete archive, which took around 24 hours... then i wiped the TC and put stuff back... it now works fine again...

I like the idea of auto back-up for my new iMac, Ipad and PC Netbook, particularly if I can access all files and data stored on any device.  But I have a Conceptronic router.
    1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?
    2. Can my printer USB be plugged in and then shared between the devices?
    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.
    Ray

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

From my Linux Fedora, I am connected to the main wireless network for the TC. When I go to "Browse Network", I can see 2 destinations named M's TC (FileSharing), when I try to access the first one it opens but has no content at all! While the other one gives an error:
