Accessing shares between systems

I have the WRT54GS V5 with Speedbooster router.  I have a desktop hard-wired and a laptop that I use with a wireless NIC.  When I originally installed the router, I was able to access shares from my laptop to my desktop.  After about two months, this stopped working.  I did not make any configuration changes on the router.  Also, I had two brand new laptops that I hard-wired with a new installation of Windows XP and they were not able to share resources either.
I have upgraded the router firmware to 1.5.9 but that did not resolve the issue.
Can anyone provide any insight?
Thanks,
MSM

Each system has Windows XP Professional.  File and Print sharing are enabled.  I didn't make any router or system changes when it stopped working.  There isn't anything wrong with the laptop setup because I use it in my office and access everything without a problem.  When I brought the two additional laptops to the people that I was imaging them for, they were able to access resources on their networks as well.  This issue appears to be isolated to my home network.

  • Access share on NSS4000 with error: A device attached to the system is not functioning

    Hello,
We use Acronis True Image Server to backup 4 Windows 2008 Standard Server system
with 2 different domains, each containing a DC and a RDP-Server.
After Server reboot, backup will run only once a day.
The next day backup aborts, and while trying to access
the network share like \\ip-address\share, as configured in Acronis
I get the error message: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
On the other hand, I can ping the NSS4000 and access share by using the
network (netbios) name instead of the ip.
This will work only for one day, also.
Now, if I try to access the share on the NSS4000 again by ip,
I get the error code 0x80070043 The networkname can not be found.
Ping on ip and netbiosname works.
Share access from one server to an other is not affected and full funtional at all times.
On the first sight I thought, that there it might be with the authentication protocol NTLMV2.
So I configured the GP to send only NTLM Authentication only, without fixing the problem.
    Fyi:
    I use a NSS4000, Firmware version 1.16-3
The NSS4000 is not a member in neither domains.
I created a dummy user account on each domain, an created a local user on the NSS4000 related
to the dummy user account on each domain.
A good answer helping me to fix with this issue, would be great.

I am constantly seeing this error at multiple sites on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Standard and DataCenter.
I have counted over 50 different server I manage with services such as   domain controller, hyper-v, file servers, exchange 2013, SQL 2008/2012, and print servers.
I have seen it happen on machine that have been in production for over 2 years and to machines that were just created last week.
It is happening on metal, hyper-v and esx vmware servers.
It is happening when the machine have updates waiting or no updates, or after updates have been applied and awaiting a restart.
It is happening on Dell PowerEdge server, HP Proliant servers and IBM servers.
It is happening on servers with Intel and AMD chip-sets.
It is happening on machines that are a part of a domain or in a workgroup.
It is happening on machines with AV of Bitdefendor, Trend Micro, Vipre, Microsoft Endpoint, and Symantec Endpoint.
Only a restart will fix it.
I have ran process monitor on several of the problem machines and I cannot find anything.
Since I have only started seeing this about 6 month ago it must be a Windows update causing it.

Is there a way to get an apple mail folder exported to outlook mail folder structure?  I'm using Gmail on my IMAC and have a PC for work.  Want to share folder structure between systems.

Use following steps to import apple mail to outlook:
Choose Mailbox->Export Mailbox, or choose Export Mailbox from the Action pop-up menu
Choose a folder or create a new folder where you want to store the exported mailbox.
Outlook for Mac: Choose File->Import Mailboxes. Select the mail application you want to import messages from.
If it does not work then you should use third party apple mail to pst applications. You can easily search in Google about these applications.

  • DCOM access failure between forests

In the process of setting up a single System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) Server to protect domains in multiple forests, I have run into a show-stopping problem.
For all the child domains within the same forest a two way (child) trust exists and everything works fine.  However, for domains in another forest, for which a two way (forest) trust exists, all attempts to use WMI / DCOM fail saying the RPC server
    is unavailable.
For reference, system A is in forest X and system B is in forest Y.  A two way forest trust exists between X and Y.  In addition, all the necessary DNS forwarding is in place to allow name resolution to succeed.
System A can successfully ping system B.  System A can also use the net view command to view the SMB shares of system B.  System A can also use the sc command to communicate with the SCM on system B.
However, any attempts to use WMI fail.  Either using the PowerShell Get-WmiObject or the wmic command.
It really seems like there is some DCOM configuration problem, but I have been unable to determine what it is and fix it.
Suggestions, hints, what ever are welcome.
    - Mark

    Hi Mark,
To troubleshoot the error "The RPC server is unavailable", please follow these steps below:
    1) Check that DCOM is enabled on both computers. Check the following registry value: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE, value: EnableDCOM,'Y'
    2) Check the relevant remote access or WMI-related services are running:
    Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
    Remote Access Connection Manager
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
    Remote Registry
    3) Check the firewall issue on the remote computer:
Temporary disable the firewall and retry the cmdlet, if the cmdlet works now, please investigate the firewall inbound rules.
    I hope this helps.

    Mac/Windows Networking in Leopard
The following articles outline how to set up networking between Macs using Leopard and Windows PCs:
Setting up a Windows computer to share files with Mac users
Setting up a Mac computer to share files with Windows users
    Sharing with Windows computers
If you can’t connect to your Mac from a Windows computer
Sharing your computer with others on your network
More information is also available by selecting Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and searching for the relevant terms such as "windows", "networking", "sharing", etc.
    Also read:
Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
    Requirements
    1. A decent router
    2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
    3. Windows XP or Vista
    4. Number of network devices <10
    5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
    6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
    <u>General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
    Windows
    1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
    2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
    3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
    MAC
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
    3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
    Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
    1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
    3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
    4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
    5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
    6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
    Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
    3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
    Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
    FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
    Good Luck

My assistant and I are using two Lightrooms (i.e. two serial numbers) and need to share between our two computers. I provide originals to her onto a flash drive. She tags them and returns them to me. I then copy the photos from her flash drive onto my computer and load them in my LR. The photos appear but witthout any editing or tagging. We need to be able to have her working on the photos on her computer with her copy of LR and me on my computer with my version of LR being able to access what is already tagged and given back to me. This seems hard. We need advice on if it is at all possible to have two computers simultaneously working on LR . I bought her her own version because I was told at the time of purchasing that that was the only way to share. Please advise urgently! Thanks.

Sounds like your assistant isn't instructing Lightroom to write the tagging and editing to the files themselves, so wehn the files return to you, they don't have editing and tagging information. She need to select the photos in Lightroom and then Ctrl-S (Cmd-S on Mac). Or alternatively turn on the option to autmoatically write this information to the files.
If you are using RAW photos, then this information will be written to a sidecar XMP file, and your assistant must provide you with the sidecar file. If these photos are not RAW photos, then the information is written directly into the photo file itself.
Lightroom wasn't designed to be a multi-user program, and so it is truly not possible to have two people working on the same catalog at once. The way you are doing things, as modified above, is probably the way to go.
As an alternative, you can transfer (portions of) catalogs as well as photos back and forth and then all of these issues disappear, but a catalog might be rather large for a flash drive (or maybe not, it depends)

  • Could not access the central system - CUA problem

    Hi all,
Please help me with this problem.
Its just a test scenario, when everything will be good here, i have to do the same for Production.
We just did upgrade our R3 system from 4.6 to ECC6.0.
    I created CUA on DB1100 ( Dev BW 4.6 ) with two child systems 1) DC1150 ( Dev CRM 4.6)
    2) DE1400 ( DEV ECC 6.0 ).
Now everything is working fine between DB1100 and DC1150..
It works like CUA ( DB1100) and child (DC1150) systems as it should be.
But connection between DB1100 and DE1400 is not working fine. When you go to SU01 in DE1400, it does not allow me to change anything. It means connection is there and DB1100 is taking DE1400 as child system but when i am updating any user information or roles in DB1100 it is not updating child system DE1400.
And when i went to tcode SCUA in DE1400 it gave me this error.
"Could not access the central system DB1100".
I dont know whats happening. I did same config in DE1400 as i did in DC1150. DC1150 is working fine but not DE1400.
The most weird thing is that DB1100 is thinking DE1400 as child system and i can not make any changes to DE1400 directly.
please help me with this. What i can do to make this working between DB1100 and DE1400??
i need to do the same in production if it gets passed.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi mala_swa,
seems that you have a problem with the rfc-connections....
Please check in both directions. The connection have to work without problems.
Check SCUL in DB1100 - what is the status of the distributed users? Errors, unconfirmed?
Check idocs in DE1400. Are there some? What is their status?
The most common error is coming from not working rfc-connections. That brings for instance problems while generationg partner profiles, etc. Also the strict naming convention (log. system name=system name in CUA landscape = name of used RFC-connections) has to be considered....
So that are some points, that you could check.
    good luck,
    Bernhard

  • Should I use Samba to share between 2 Arch boxes?

Hey i have a few questions as i am a complete beginner when it comes to networking/filesharing, please bear with me.  According to the wiki, Samba can be used to share local files between two unix pcs.  I have it working right now and I've read the Samba wiki and i feel it is a bit lacking in information for a beginner, so i have a few questions...
    1. I have it installed on both of the pcs i want to share between, with the same username and the same exact password, is this how it should be setup normally?
    2. The main reason for attempting this is because i have an 8000 or so song collection and it seems silly to have the music on both cpu's, which is how i've had it set up.  I succesfully connected to my laptop through nautilus using the smb://192.x.x.x/sharename method and put in the password and all seems fine, but i want to be sure that the other 3 pc's in my house (all windows) cannot connect to me and see my files.  The wiki didn't help me there, and also did not go though the smb.conf settings thoroughly.
    3. Exaile doesn't seem to be able to browse smb://xxx directories.  If i can't load my music from the other pc to exaile then i have no use for this.
    4. I'm listening to music from my laptop on my desktop at the moment (with VLC) and i'm typing this on my laptop and i'm noticing a slight lag every 20 seconds or so which never happened before, is this normal?
thanks for any input, i really have to clue what i'm doing here.

ok, nfs-4 seems like a good choice, but i am having a hard time understanding the wiki.  from the wiki:
Exporting directories outside your NFS root
To do this, you'll need to use bind mounts. For example, to bind /home/john to /export/john:
    # mount --bind /home/john /export/john
Then, /export/john needs to be added to /etc/exports:
    /export    192.168.0.12(rw,fsid=0,no_subtree_check,async,no_root_squash)
    /export/music 192.168.0.12(rw,no_subtree_check,async,no_root_squash)
    /export/john 192.168.12(rw,no_subtree_check,async,no_root_squash,nohide)
The nohide option is required, because the kernel NFS server automatically hides mounted directories. To add the bind mount to /etc/fstab:
i dont really know what to do, i'm not familiar with exports and i don't think my pc's have the same ip (192.168.1.???) everytime if i reconnect the router or something.  what does "nfs-root" mean?
Really all i want to achieve is accessing the home directory of the other pc and vice versa, while limiting access strictly to my pc's.

  • Difference between System.out.println() and out.println()

    Hi,
In JSP we want to write the JNLP file contents to a ouput stream using "out.printl()".
The content of the JNLP file i am having in a String.
The "System.out.println()" is printing the correct JNLP file contents but "out.println()" writing wrong contents which are taken from Server JNLP file.
    How to solve this problem?
    Please guide me in this.
    Thanks and Regards:
    Dheeraj

Where is the "System.out.println()" running from? I don't think your problem has anything to do with the difference between System.out.println and out.println. Both methods print what is passed to them. It sounds like you are printing two different files because you are running in two different environments.
JSPs run on a server and only have access to files on the server or on a network the server is on. If you are trying to print a file on a user's system, JSP can't do it.

  • Difference between system copy and Remote Client copy?

    Hi,
Can any body suggest me , What are the major difference between System copy and Remote Client Copy.
As per my knowledge , Both are different
1.In system copy  entire data recovered mean copy from Source to target
2.In Remote client copy All  Client data can't me import if you choose SAP_ALL profile also
I hope Transaction data and user data can't copied
Anybody share this Question and Give me some idea about this
If anybody  give brief explanation that is very gratefull.
    regards,
    Balaram

    Hi,
System copy will replicate all database from source to target system.
In remote copy only client in which you are performing the copy will get refresh. Also, remote client copy will be done between systems on same patch level. with SAP_ALL profile you can bring all data in target system including your transactional data.
    Thanks

  • Cannot file share between MacBook Pro and iMac, but can Screen Share fine.

    Hi all,
Very strange problem going at the minute!
I can Screen Share both ways (iMac - MBP and MBP - iMac) just fine but can't seem to File Share between either computer. They are both on the same network and both have the exact same settings under SysPrefs. I can see both devices in a Finder window and can click the 'Connect As...' button, but once I've put in my credentials, the message in the Finder window changes from 'Connecting...' to 'Connection Failed' in a matter of seconds.
Both have AFP switched on and neither has the Firewall enabled. I also cannot FTP between either computer via 'Connect to Server...', but I can utilise iTunes Home Sharing perfectly.
I've tried pretty much everything I can find on the WWW, but nothing's worked! Help!
    Thanks!

    Hi, thanks for your help!
I think I've solved the problem now (at long last!).
Somehow, my sharing permissions on my Home folder on either computer won't allow me access. I've tried repairing permissions multiple times, but to no avail.
I've solved the problem by sharing my Macintosh HD, rather than my individual Home folder and I can access everything as normal now.

  • The difference between system restore and last good known configuration

    hi,
what is the difference between system restore  and last good known configuration.
in which situation you use system restore ,and in which situation you use last good known configuration.
very short answer wil be enough.
    thanks
    johan
    h.david

Last Known Good Configuration deals only with Starting Windows eg. a bad registry or incorrect driver is preventing Windows to start. It recovers the registry settings of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet
While System Restore uses restore points to return your system files and settings to an earlier point in time without affecting personal files. Restore points are created automatically every week, and just before significant system events, such as the installation
of a program or device driver. You can also create a restore point manually. You can undone system restore but there is no such option in Last Known Good Configuration.
Last Known Good Configuration is disabled in Windows 8 or,Windows 8.1 by default.
Try using Last Known Good Configuration if you can't start Windows, but it started correctly the last time you turned on the computer.
Try using System Restore to return the system to an earlier point in time when things worked correctly.

How can I get all photos from the camera roll, and all new pictures taken, to get on the photostream so they can share between iphone and ipad?

When turning PhotoStream on with photos available in the Camera Roll, only photos captured by the iPhone or saved on the iPhone are placed in the PhotoStream.
For all photos that were in the Camera Roll prior to turning PhotoStream on, import the photos with your computer and add the photos to your PhotoStream on your computer.

Hi Rosdy, to get the most out of iCloud it is recommended that you use the same account between devices. Thus whenever you buy something on your phone it becomes accessible from your laptop regardless of whether your synced it over usb or not. *
For more information on iCloud usage please click here.
    * This feature requires that both devices be on the same WiFi network.

  • Share one iTunes library on a SMB share between PC & Mac

    Hi,
Is there anyway I can share one iTunes library and the music files on a SMB share between a PC and a Mac? I assume there would be a problem with how the Mac and PC assign network drives differently would be an issue, or is there a way around this?
At the moment I'm only sharing the music files on the SMB share but with separately iTunes library on the PC and Mac.

I have itunes match. its good but its not perfect. it downloads wrong versions of songs. for example it downloads the censored version of many of my songs. plus it doesnt do podcasts, movies, tvshows, books.
plus it doesnt show my smart playlists in the same track order as on my computer. its good but it has bugs and shortcomings.
thanks for the suggestion but i'd like to try the way i initially posted about.
