Accessing Syslog on LMS 3.0.1

Hello
Hopefully quite a straight forward question
Is there a way of viewing the syslog through the LMS portal as opposed to viewing the syslog directly from within \NMSroot\CSCOpx\log ?
Many Thanks

Hi,
So far all logs look good except from the stdout.log, i found the exception :-
Local Server URL :https://ctrsyscem01:443
[Thu Apr 21 09:55:45 GMT 2011]CsAuthServlet.getRole(): User 'sirad' not found, returning role 'HD
HD means = help desk role
Is the LMS server is integrated with ACS and if yes what is the status of LMS- ACS integration. Kindly share the screenshot of Common Services > Home to see if the ACS is showing up in Green colour or Red. Red means LMS - ACS integration is broken.
The best thing I will suggest you to upgrade to LMS 3.2 which is free for all the customer running LMS 3.0 \ LMS 3.0.l \ LMS 3.1. You can direcly upgarde to LMS 3.2 by downloading the evaluation version from www.cisco.com\go\lms Under the featured contents tab.
However, if you still want to troubeshoot this issue at LMS 3.0.1, then kindly enable the debugging for License Server from Common Services > Server > Admin > CS Log Configuration > select Licensing > Enable.
Reproduce the issue again and send the following logs from the location  CSCOpx\log :-
License.log.
Its higly recommended that you should upgrade to LMS 3.2.
Thanks,

  • Access Database in LMS 3.2

I want to access the database through ODBC.
I have followed the instructions of documentation and I can access the server but I can´t access the views because user database fails.
User database I´m using is ´lmsdatafeed´ with the password created in the installation of CiscoWorks LMS 3.2
    My ODBC configuration is:
    Data source name:   cmf
    Descrioption:     cmf
    User ID:     lmsdatafeed
    Password: xxxxxxxxx
    Server Name:  cmfEng
    Database name: cmfDb
    TCP/IP:       HOST=Hostname;DOBROADCAST=NO;ServerPort=43441
Is there another user database to connect with database?

    The ODBC parameters should be:
    Data source name : cmfLogin: Username : lmsdatafeed Password : Server Name : cmfEngTCP/IP : HOST=Hostname;DOBROADCAST=NO;ServerPort=43441
You shouldn't specify a database or database path.  Make sure you've copied all of the necessary files from the LMS server to your remote host, and make sure TCP port 43441 is open between your client and the LMS server.  Verify by trying to telnet to the server on the port 43441.  See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/3.2/database_schema/guide/dbviews.html#wp103753 for more on the remote access ODBC prerequisites.  You should be able to access the two views Network_Devices and Job_Details using these connection parameters.  See the document above for the other DB connection parameters to access the remainder of the views.

  • Linking Captivate to Access DB, No LMS

I have been trying to find a solution to linking a captivate
test and scores to an access database since our company does not
have an LMS nor the budget for one. Any suggestions?

When you publish a Captivate with tracking, note the
    accompanying HTML
has code to communicate with the LMS.
If you can change that code to, say, post to a database
    instead, that
may work best, as Captivate is already trying to use those js
    functions
    anyway.

  • Changing Link ports to Access ports in LMS 4.1

One of techs accidentally connected two access ports from different switches together.  Since then, LMS is alerting them as being Link ports down.  I tried to default the config and set them to access ports without any success.  Any idea what I should do in LMS to recognize them as access ports?  Thank you.

    Rediscovering the device is sufficient.

  • Problem Syslog Prime LMS

For some time we have problems syslog collector prime LMS 4.2.5,  randomly we have no information about the syslogs..
We restart the process syslog collector and analyzer and syslogs working again.
Does anyone know this problem because it happens to us mons twice a week and you lose a lot of information on a network of 1,500 devices.
    thank you.

If your TACACS server is Cisco Secure ACS, you can try to import the users with the CLI utility below directly.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.1/user/guide/admin/appendixcli.html#wp1064833
    Importing Users From ACS
To import users from ACS through CLI, enter the following commands:
•NMSROOT/bin/perl NMSROOT/bin/AddUserCli.pl -importFromAcs Filename Password (on Solaris/Soft Appliance)
•NMSROOT\bin\perl NMSROOT\bin\AddUserCli.pl -importFromAcs Filename Password (on Windows)
    where,
    •Filename — Ouput of executing CSUtil.exe.
•Password — ACS password which is the default password assigned to all users.
If you're running another TACACS server, you can export the user + pass from that, then import the list with a script built around the "NMSROOT/bin/perl NMSROOT/bin/AddUserCli.pl -add" utility:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/4.1/user/guide/admin/appendixcli.html#wp1015980
In either case, hopefully the CLI tools would whine about or acquiesce to the dot in the username.

  • LMS 3-2 / RME 4.3.1 and syslog forwarding sends extra blank syslog

Customer is telling me they setup syslog forwarding (I didn't ask where they did this), but they state that each syslog message being forwarded that another blank syslog is sent to that device along with the forwarded message.
Any ideas why the blank syslog gets sent with the forwarded syslog?
    LMS Bundle 3.2
    Campus Manager 5.2.1
    RME 4.3.1

I think the customer is shooting the messenger.
Find out where the syslog is forwarded. Probably something wrong there
LMS doesn't do syslog forwarding normally
I guess you could create a script that could do that.

  • LMS syslog?

How can I configure my LMS 4.0 to capture syslog from network devices?
On the LMS CiscoWorks Portal, Syslog Alert window shows "No data is available"
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
First you need to subscribe LMS server to Syslog Collector so that LMS should know that it need to collect the Syslogs from the devices.
    You can configure it from
Admin > Collection Settings: Syslog > Syslog Collector > Enter the Ip address of the LMS server
After successfully subscribing to Syslog Collector , you need to make sure that your devices should be sending the Syslog to the LMS server and you can verify the same by looking at the Syslog.log file that exist at location CSCOpx\log directory of the LMS server .
Then go the Reports tab at the top and generate the Syslog reports for your devices.
Kindly refer to the below link to understand the basic requirements to configure Syslog in LMS and the functioning of the Syslog in LMS
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_resource_manager_essentials/4.3/user/guide/syslog.html
    Many Thanks,

  • How to view router/switch logs using LMS 3.2?

Of course I can log into each of my 100 routers and switches and peforms "sh loggin" to look for problems, but how do I use LMS 3.2 to consolidate all those logs into one location?  Can I set up something so I can see those logs in more or less real time?
    Thanks in advance.

    >> Does LMS go get syslog messages periodically or does the device send a copy to LMS whenever it generates a new message?
    The latter.
If for some reason, the devices cannot log directly to LMS, there're a few options: 1) Devices log to a central syslog server, which in turn exposes the syslogs to LMS' Syslog Analyzer, either via the Cisco-supplied Remote Syslog Collector or some unsupported methods such as NFS mount, or 2) Install Syslog-ng on the central syslog server, relay the logs to LMS, as described in this whitepaper: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/netmgtsw/ps6504/ps6528/ps2425/white_paper_c11-571038.html
    >> What's the benefit of scheduling a report to run automatically?  Is it saved somewhere that is easier/quicker to get to?
It's the usual benefits of automation. Scheduled syslog reports apparently write outputs to /var/adm/CSCOpx/files/rme/cri/archives/syslog/reports/output/[jobID_runID], on Solaris, for example. The structure inside is rather muddy. So it might be easier to have something like a VBscript to screen-scrape the LMS web GUI for the report outputs instead.
    >> Can new syslog messages from devices be posted to an RSS feed?
That's a novel idea. Though obviously not from the devices directly, it most likely coud be done through some "syslog2rss" relay residing on the syslog server. I think the potential volumes of logs could be too much for RSS, unless careful filtering/deduplication takes place on the relay before posting to a feed.

  • Database Access via ODBC

    Hi,
Since recent (LMS3.2) Cisco released the Open Database Schema support. In the guidelines I find info/procedures to access the database remotely via ODBC. However only Solaris/Solaris Windows/Windows is described. Is there any info how I can access the Database (LMS installed on Sol10) remotely via a Windows system ?
    Jan

The instructions for Windows/Windows apply, but you'll need to first get the necessary DLLs to allow for database access. The easiest way to do this would be to install Common Services from the LMS 3.2 DVD on a Windows 2003 or 2008 machine. Then extract the DLLs, and uninstall Common Services.
It may also be possible to start the installer, have it extract the install bits to the TEMP location, then you can pull the DLLS from there. However, I have not tried this for obtaining database DLLs (only device packages).

  • LMS 4.2.2. Standard vs Custom Discovery - Custom not really working ...

    Hello Forum,
I did a new install on VM-ware, via LMS4.2.0 OVA file, updated to 4.2.2 and applied latest deviceupdates etc, like MDF and all.
In general it runs good, but, I have a huge problem with CSDiscovery.
My discovery only works in when I choose standard discovery.
Allthough it takes AGES, due to 1000's of Lightwieght AP's hence I need to filter them out.
Only problem with standard discovery is that I cannot get the routers to be managed via Loopback interface, as this option is only configureable in Custom Discovery, also the CDPID Filters for the AP ONLY applies in Custom Discovery, to make Discover faster.
So I need Custom Discovery badly ...
BUT when I run Custom Discovery, with the exact same setting, as in Std Discovery, the discovery skids over seed devices and marks then unreachable !
It like runs way to fast all over the devices !
I then enabled debugging on and looked into ngdiscovery.log in /var/adm/CSCOpx/log
Here I see entries like SNMP timeout on device etc, but this is simply not true, as I can run the same setting when doing std discovery !
I am deeply puzzled - So I copied the backed up system-config.xml file hence restoring the default settings, and restarted LMS.
same problem ... std dis work, cust discovery skids over the seed-devices - ie never gets around to discover anything...
I am so fortunate to have access to a LMS 4.2.1 installation, on OVA too, and I edited the system-config.xml there and added CDPID filtrers for LAP's and ran Cust dis WITH NO PROBLEMS and super fast !
So I know the settings are right in the xml file ...
I can reproduce this in my installation - Std works - Cust runs haywire !
    everytime ...
I am actuall surprised that the CDPID filters are NOT aplied to std dis, via the XML file !
Only reads XLM file  when doing Cust dis.
This i can also verify in the Job-specific files in /opt/CSCOpx/objects/csdiscovery/JOBID
Are there any bugs related to Custom Discovery vs Std in 4.2.2 ??
I am on the leap to start all over and NOT go to patch 2, staying on 4.2.1 ...
But my time is running and I am on the clock here ...
Please advice, aswell as give you feedback on your experience with cust disc in 4.2.2 on OVA (SoftAppliance)
    regrads
    Martin

    Hi Karel,
Below are the supprted ,  windows OS ,please check if you are installing it on one of them.
LMS 4.2 supports the following Windows systems:
    •Windows 2008 Standard Edition Release 1 with SP1 and SP2
    •Windows 2008 Enterprise Edition Release 1 with SP1 and SP2
Note Only 64-bit Operating Systems is supported on the above versions.
    •Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition with SP1
    •Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP1
Note Only 64-bit Operating Systems are supported on the above versions.
If above is correct then share the Installation.log , it will be under c:/  drive

  • How to get Ciscoworks LMS 4.0.1 serial number

How to get Ciscoworks LMS 4.0.1 serial number ? I need that to put the product under mainrtenance, and I can't manage to get it.
    Thanks for your help
    Roland

as LMS 4.0.1 is a service pack on LMS 4.0 you need the serial number of your base installation of LMS 4.0.
The serial number for software products is called "PAK" ("Product Authorization Key")
For LMS there are 3 options to get the PAK:
    1) the PAK is printed on a paper sheet in the box in which LMS was sent to you. Sometimes it is also printed outside on the box.
    2) the mail you received from [email protected] after the online licensing process includes the PAK;
the first lines of the email looks something like this:
    ===========================================================
    DO NOT DISCARD THIS EMAIL.
        Product Name          : R-LMS41-1.5K-MR-K9
Product Description      : Update LMS 4.0 to 4.1 Base download for 1500 devices
        Product Qty          : 1
        Product Authorization Key : 1354Jxxxxxx
        Sales Order Number      : 117yyyyy
Options Included: No additional features have been selected for this product.
You have received this email because your email address was provided to
Cisco  Systems during the registration process for a software license key file  to the CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution (LMS) software.
    ===========================================================
    3) the license file itself contains the PAK, sourounded by the tags and <\PAK>
    the line looks like this:
        1354Jxxxxxx" SIGN=658Czzzzzzzz
if you have access to your LMS server you can find the license file at the following location:
        NMSROOT\etc\licenses\1317812nnnnnn.lic
open it with a text editor and you 'll find the PAK.

  • LMS 4.2 and Shadow Dir/Config Backups

    Hi all,
Back with more LMS questions.  We have 4.2 running (two separate instances - we have more than one network) and I have a config collection job set up.  Upon initial discovery, configs were pulled from all devices into the Shadow director as expected.    However, since initial discovery, the Shadow directory has not been updated despite the fact that it is set up to pull config backups daily from all devices.
Under the Archival Summary, it does show that all devices were successful or partially successful (the partials are where VLAN collection failed...I'm unsure why it is even trying given I disabled VLAN collection).  So it appears to be working, yet the configurations have not changed in the Shadow directory.
Any ideas why this may be happening?  Does it only update the Shadow dir if the device config actually changed since last scheduled job?  None of the configs HAVE changed since I discovered them.
We use SNMPv3 and SSH as access methods for LMS.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
    Jen

You answered it... The shadow directory only contains the current config and only changes when updated.
    Thanks.

  • Retake Quiz results not updated by LMS

Does Captivate 7 send out a score update every time a test is taken (through a SCORM 1.2 LMS server)? I have the following situation
    Quiz failed on first attempt
As designed, module presented trainee with retake offer.
    Trainee passes quiz
    LMS score does not update
What is the likely issue and how can I check for the score information that is being communicated to the LMS?  I am not the LMS admin so I don't have access to the LMS.
    Thanks,
    Nadeem

Is this the screenshot of your Manifest settings? It is because I do not see something in the fields 'Score identifier'/'Course object title'. The mastery score is not activated in the screenshot, and should be the same as in the Quiz settings. Can you check?

  • LMS rcp issue

    Hi
When adding devices to DCR via LMS dicovery ,it adds them successfully but unable to grab device configuration. On remote device I created a local cwuser and enabled rcmd rcp. There is no access list blocking LMS. the only difference is cwuser is a local user on device but deice itself is getting authenticated from tacacs , I also created a tacacs account for cwuser but no still no luck . In logs i am seeing this

Please advise if RCP can work with tacacs , thanks for your time.

You don't create a local user. the device is the client en LMS the server.
LMS telnets or ssh's to the devices and rcp's to itself via cli.

Usually we dont recommend to change anything on syslog.conf. Syslog_info is the file where all the syslogs coming from network pointed to LMS server is written.
Usually they should be controlled at the device level by checking the logging level of devices.
Mostly ASA/FW's send excessively huge amount of syslogs to LMS server which should be controlled. Also, you can check the logrot utility to control the syslog_info log size to keep in check. Logrot is an Log file rotation utilit in LMS.
Log files can expand and fill up disk space. Log files rotation helps you manage the log files more efficiently. See
Maintaining Log Files  for an overview of maintaining the log files in LMS Server.
For more details on logrot check userguide :
