Accessing the internet anywhereon a Macbook???

I'm thining of purchasing a Apple MacBook MC207LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop I would like to be able to access the internet to browse, play live365, xmradio, etc... I would like to be able to do this anywhere (in the city). Is this possible or do I need to be in an internet or wi-fi network? Im thining this because i saw where Cricket offers you wireless internet on your pc anywhere you go.

The service will probably come with some hardware. If that hardware is in the form of a PCMCIA card (also called PCCARD), then the standard MacBook cannot use it, since it does not have a PCMCIA slot.
Other services use a dongle that connects to the USB port. If the provider says it supports Macs, then you're good to go.
Do note that you really need 3G speed. Service very much depends on the city you live in. Check the coverage maps of the provider. Also note that a lot of 3G networks have been suffering in recent times.

  • MacBook Pro will no longer access the internet

We have two macs:  A MacBook Pro (2.53 GHz Intel Core Due) and a MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  Both are running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
Problem:  the MacBook Pro will no longer connect to the internet.  Network Diagnostics thinks that it is connected.  I can use Network Utilitities to ping a site.  But Apple Mail, iCal, Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Skype, Software Update, etc., cannot access the internet.
The MacBook Pro is set up with a single user account.
Our internet is provided through a mobile phone provider.  If I set up our smart phone to serve as a wireless hotspot, the MacBook, iPod Touch, iPad will all connect.  The MacBook Pro will not.  If I put the SIM card in a USB modem and connect the modem to the MacBook Pro, the modem software will connect to the internet.  If I turn on Internet Sharing on the MacBook Pro, the MacBook, etc., will connect through the MacBook Pro, but the MacBook Pro itself will not.
So to sum up:  the modem software connects to the internet, Internet Sharing works as it should, Network Diagnostics and Network Utilities can't see a problem, and yet none of the apps that NEED to access the internet are able to.

I have tried going to System Preferences / Network and deleting Airport and then adding it back.  I've tried disabling the Firewall.  And the same with reboots after each.
We're from the States but currently our work has us in Africa.  To keep from inadvertantly passing on windows viruses to others (viruses are rampant in Africa), I'm running the Intego anti-virus software on both machines (VirusBarrier X6).  I mention this because the problem started after rebooting after an update for that software.  (The MacBook Pro has had the update, the MacBook has not.)  But I also used Time Machine in an attempt to roll back VirusBarrier X6 to its pre-update status.  That didn't solve the problem either, which makes be think that the Intego problem didn't cause the problem.  But I mention it to be thorough.
There is an Apple-certified service centre in country, but it's a long drive away that I'd rather not have to make.  As it would for any of you in this day and age, this is really hampering my work.  Any and all help is much appreciated.

    THE FIX
After hours (days actually) troubleshoorting, involving 4 people and Apple Support folks, I'll  save you time. If you have VirusBarrier-follow the Manual to uninstall. use Intego's uninstall and deauthorize Virusbarrier before you trash it. If you have Net Nanny, trash it.
None of the above-it is Foxcomm's Airport/Bluetooth (661-5867) card. Faulty, non existent, blown a transistor, are all comments from Techn Support reps (the Genuis blue shirt reps)
Take it into an Apple Store, have them check the Airport card  (and only the airport card) using " a different operating system". Sorry that is a black hole, as the machine disappeared to the back of the store for"testing. Don't re-install the OS, delete plist files or applications, reconf and spend hours wasting your time.
Virusbarrier, net nanny or a faulty Airport card. In warranty it is covered; out of warranty:70.55 plus $39 to have Apple officially loosen the screws.I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro, can't speak for older models.
    Hope this helps the community.

  • My Macbook pro keeps quitting Safari while browsing. I have to shutdown the computer and restart to access the internet or my email. I t works for about 5 minutes then quits

My Macbook Pro cannot sustain Safari for more than 5 minutes. Once I hit return the "working" icon just keeps going round and round. The only way to access the internet or my email is to totally shut down and then restart.
Is there something I can check to see if there is a virus or is this a common problem. I just returned from a trip to the states and had no problem using my laptop there. I have had no problems until about 6 hours ago.

  • Macbook pro connects to iphone through bluetooth but can't access the internet

Hello, I have a macbook pro 10.6 and an iphone 3gs 4.3.3. I used to be able to connect the macbook to the iphone through bluetooth using personal hotspot and access the internet but one day it just stopped working. I have tried turning them off and on, disconnecting bluetooth etc but nothing has worked so far. I have tried connecting my iphone to my ipad2 through bluetooth, it works great. The iphone to the macbook through usb and it works great as well. I have tried connecting another iphone to my macbook through bluetooth and it doesn't work. The bluetooth on my macbook seems to be the problem
Well, to be more precise, the macbook sees the iphones, connects to them through bluetooth, the blue bar appears on the iphones screens but the computer wont access the internet.
    Any idea?
    Thank you very much.

    SUCCESS!!!!!
I visited my brother-in-law yesterday and attempted to connect with his secure network. By sheer luck, he is using the exact same model LinkSys router. My iPhone connected first time--so the iPhone was eliminated as a source of the problem.
I didn't do a lot of troubleshooting at his house, but I did notice that his network was set for both dynamic DHCP and dynamic DNS. I know that either or both of Windstream (my ISP) and my broadband modem requires a pair of static DNS addresses.
Sure enough, delving real deep into Windstream's support site, I discovered a LinkSys router DNS help page, specifying how to set static DNS addresses in LinkSys routers. I then accessed my router, enterd the known static addresses, saved the router settings, then rebooted the iPhone and connected to the network.
    SUCCESS!!!
Thanks to Jane, who suggested it was an ISP issue, Jason, and all at Apple support. dumonj, I'll email you directly. Try this suggestion and see if it helps.

    Please help.
    Apple genius were no help.
On my home wi-fi I find that very often I can't access the internet on Firefox, Safari, Chrome etc. It just freezes out and drives me bonkers. It's nit the home wi-fi as iphone still opens pages no problem.
Really frustrating and if I wait ages or turn off computer it usually fixes. Happens every day.

    Hi.
In Preferences - > Network, click on the VPN account you've set up and then the Advanced button. This should bring up your Options pane. Uncheck "Send all traffic over VPN connection" and then test your connection and internet access. If it works, then you've successfully enabled split-tunneling. If it doesn't work, go back and check the VPN settings. If the "Send all traffic" is once again checked, it's likely that the security policy of the VPN server is forcing all your traffic through the connection.
If that's the case, all you can do is contact the administrator of the VPN server and request that your settings be changed.
    Good luck!

  • Networks will "connect" over Wifi, but DNS resolution is impossible and I can't access the internet.

My OSX 10.7.5 iMac (late 2011) will connect to my university's wireless network and thinks it's connected to the internet, but cannot resolve any DNS - and cannot actually access the internet on any browser or internet-utilising app. My university has 2 networks, a regular wifi one and an eduroam one. I have the same problem on both networks. My MacBook, running Snow Leopard, and my iPad (latest software) both connect to both networks just fine.
Because it's my university's network, i can't reset my router or anything like that. I'm in halls. I don't think it's a network issue, because all my other devices are fine.
I've searched high and low on these forums but haven't found anyone having exactly the same problem as me - I've heard of odd few minutes of people losing their connections in this manner, but my computer's been down now for hours and nothing. I've restarted it many times, even once in "Recovery Mode" and I'm getting nothing. I've followed instructions to flush my DNS cache, renew DHCP leases, I've tried manually inputting various DNSes I've found (eg the 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 google ones), none of which have worked.
Using terminal, I can't ping either an http:// domain, or an IP address. Both get "timed out" as a response. I can't access the internet on any browser (chrome, safari, firefox), my google mail notifier, Skype, or my twitter app. Or anything else.
I'm relatively computer literate, but I'm not particularly code-savvy, so I'd really appreciate it if I could get some step-by step help on here, bearing in mind what I've already tried. I'm really worried, because it all seems to have happened completely out of the blue. Last time I updated was some time a couple weeks ago; I update whenever my software update beeps at me.
    Thanks.

Go step by step and test.
    1.Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
       It will take a while.
      Restart the computer.
      Start up in Safe Mode.

    2.  Turn off Extensions, if any.
         Safari > Preferences > Extensions
    3. Turn off proxies, if selected.
System Preference > Network > Advanced  > Proxies Tab
Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
         Click "OK" then  "Apply"
    4. Uninstall anti-virus software, if any.

  • Can other computers plug into a macpro to access the internet?

a friend of mine has two macs, a mac pro and a macbook pro.
he wants to access the internet on both computers, (wired DSL)
if he uses his dlink router, the connection is much slower than if he plugs the internet directly into the macpro.
is there a way his macbook pro can plug into the macpro, with its two ethernet jacks, so the portable can access the internet?
we tried it, but it didn't work. Internet sharing was on in the sharing preferences.

At my old workplace I had a G5 with two ethernet cards, a network switch, and a few other computers wired through it. I'm almost positive that I was able to share my connection in the manner that you described. I think that it didn't work right away for me, either, and I had to do some tinkering, but it worked.
Part of the reason why it didn't work was because it was short-lived: our IT department was not happy about having multiple devices connecting through one ethernet jack, and using this method they could see that there were multiple, individual machines on the line (source ID for network requests was different, or some such thing).
My solution - which would also fix your friend's problem - was to turn my G5 into a Squidproxy server. This basically causes your G5 to hand out the IP's to the systems connecting through it, and it forwards on all traffic to and from the computers behind it. As far as I know (based on the fact that the IT department was quiet after I set that up) it'll mask the computers behind it.
Squidproxy is free, but setting it up can be a bit of a chore if you're not familiar with it. It may be an overkill solution, but it'll definitely get the job done.

  • Do I need to pay for iLife to access the internet?

If not, then what kind of software does the Macbook Pro use to access the internet???

My PC is connected to AirPort Extreme by ethernet, I can access the network, but not the internet. The wireless devices on the extreme can access the internet

    Hey DM,
Is the Wireless(WL) router signal coming through the wired-router?
My ISP requires that my Wireless Router is identified from their end. I use AirPort Express, so they need its MAC address from the router. Without that, my network will show up, but my ISP doesn't recognize it and won't allow it to route he internet. I don't know your exact situation though.
Can other wireless computers access the internet? If they can through the WL router, then it might be the MacBook. If they can't, then you might want to contact your ISP and ask if they can see your wireless router?
    Let us know.

  • Accessing the internet using iPad.

When using my ipad, one day I could no longer go to the internet.  I received the message,"Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding".  I can go to the internet on my macbook pro.  Can someone tell me what I need to do to be able to go to the internet?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • 2008 Mac Pro Accesses the Internet Constantly

I have noticed that when I'm using my MacBook Air it is very slow to load pages.  I looked at my router and noticed that the MacPro was continuously accessing the internet.  I pulled the cable and voila my MacBook Air was now fast again.
I don't have any programs open that need internet access so what is using all this bandwidth?
    Thanks

I recommend that you get a littlesnitch. littlesnitch will track your Web traffic and tell you which applications are sending data from your computer. Be sure to run it awhile because it will trigger a number of alerts. In trail mode, it will run for three hours per boot for a about a month.

  • Why can one mac access the internet and not the other?

Hi I have just installed a 2nd generation Airport Express base station. I have setup a network and I can connect to it to access the web. Here's the rub, only my Macbook Pro can connect. My Macbook Air cannot connect? A weird error message says (translated from Swedish): Airport has the selfapplied/selfselected IP adress 169.254.67.130 and will not be able to connect to the internet.
Why can one mac access the internet and not the other? Is there something simple that I can do to get more macs to be able to use my Airport Express to access the internet?
    Tech details:
Airport Express 2nd generation (just purchased) model 1392
    Macbook Pro running 10.8.2
    MacBook Air running 10.6.8

It seems the Airbook assigns a dummy IP address so somehow it doesn't reach and receive an IP from the Express. I deleted the previous Express setting restarted the Air connected again, restarted the modem, restarted the Express nothing....
I spoke to the internet provider and the cable modem does not require any username or pw. from the modem to the cable it's one public ip, pure internet is flowing from the modem to the Express but the express doesn't seem to assign any IP address apart from the one assigned to the Macbook Pro.
