Accessing the new ac Time Capsule from Internet

I have set up my Time Capsule so that I can access it from outside. However, I can only access the time capsule disk if I use cmd-K and enter the IP directly, if I click on the Time Capsule icon on finder's sidebar, I get an error saying something like the device is unavailable. I get the same error if I try to use the Airport Utility remotely.
Any idea?
Cheers
Kenneth

do you have the BTMM and iCloud ID setup in the TC?
Is the TC operating in bridge or main router?
People seem to have issues with bridge... although it doesnt  say in the instructions that it is required to be main router.
There is a fairly long thread here of issues with BTMM and iCloud ..with the TC.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3699096?start=0&tstart=0
There are plenty more.
As you can see it is not at all easy.

  • Can i access my data on time capsule from some other network

can i access my data on time capsule from some other network that is my data at home from office over internet

There is plenty of info out there if you google..
Here is a summary I just put into another thread.
Remote access has been added back into iCloud that was in MobileMe..
Read the info on setting it up from cloud service.. BTMM.
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
If you want to do it without the cloud service, you have one major issue.. the public IP for WAN..
The internal IP of the TC.. which will default to 10.0.1.1 btw.. is irrelevant. It is the IP of the WAN which you use to access the TC over the internet. And here you have a problem.. the TC does not include dyndns service. So unless you have a static IP address from your ISP, this will cause you grief.
(If it is offered by your ISP.. get a static IP.. that eliminates all the issues.. and is far superior. Even dyndns service has issues if your public IP rotates too often. It is generally an extra cost item and requires a business account but some ISP offer it cheap or even free.. I joined an ISP that offered static ip for free because it gives me the ability to remote access my network without all the hassles you will see below.)
There are ways around it.. setting up your own domain for instance.
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/
But it is easier to simply use a different router.. almost all of them have dyndns service available.. place the TC behind the router in bridge and forward port 548 TCP to it.
This is a bit old but still relevant.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
Note .. there is no ftp, http, ssh (there is actually but it isn't accessible), or any other service to allow connection other than AFP.. so you must use a Mac in remote location to access the TC.
The setup for the two methods is slightly different in the TC.. in the first instance, you need to turn on WAN access via disk sharing page in the manual setup.
In the second case you do not need this.
Remember security and put strong passwords on the disk. There are still security questions about this.
If security is important.. there is a third and better (IMO) method and that is vpn.. you will need to buy a vpn router as TC also missed out on that.. establish a vpn with the main router and that will allow you access to your network.. you will also then be able to use SMB remotely not just AFP.
Also if this office is a large company they should be running a firewall, which would block your access to home. You should check your IT admin people for what is allowed.. generally the only acceptable method is vpn otherwise you can drag viruses and trojans right into the network without the firewall catching them.

  • Will the new 2TB time capsule run hot like the old one?

Could someone please tell me if the new 2TB time capsule that just came out will run hot like the old version? I have been thinking about getting the time capsule for quite some time, but I am concerning that it will get overheated to the point that all the data stored on it would be lost. I have seen several posts over the internet mentioning this problem. Please help. Thank you so much.

I just replaced my old TC with the new one. It took all night to transfer 149gb from my Imac to the new drive by wireless N. I took the old one to work and hooked it up in my office for a back up of a Mac Mini. At home we had 3 Mac's attached to the TC and it was always hot.I even found some sockets from an old socket set to raise it up so air could get under it to help cool it down a little. The new one is just warm with the same computers hooked up. The old one at work is also only warm to the touch with the one Mac hooked to it. I'm very happy with the new one and love the dual band.

Yes. All it needs is a modem (cable, fiber, satellite, DSL) with an Ethernet output (not USB).

  • My computer is macbook white with iOS 10. 6.8, will i able to use the new Airport Time Capsule 2TB and what does it mean administrate the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?

my computer is macbook white with Mac OS X (10. 6.8), will i able to use the new Airport Time Capsule 2TB and work properly with Time Capsule on my computer to back up wirelessly?
And what does it mean "to administrate" because it was written in requirement of the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?

You must use a Mac running Lion (10.7.5), Mountain Lion or Mavericks to be able to set up the Time Capsule and make any changes to the settings.
A recent version iPhone or iPad could also be used for this task.
From the Specifications on the Time Capsule:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3

  • How can I access to my time capsule from internet?

The main reason for bought a time capsule was that i thought i could access to my documents in it from internet. Now I can't find information about it in internet. It is possible to do it?...
    Thanks!

Since Apple has changed the MobileMe service it is difficult.
If you have a static IP yes, easy.. in your Mac (must be a Mac), in finder go, go to server, type AFP://IPofTC
That is the public IP of the TC assuming it is the only router in the network, and you have checked wan access in the disk settings.. and put in a decent password.
If you do not have a static IP, the TC is difficult. There is no dyndns client.. and you have to have your own domain to get the IP of the TC as it rotates.
It is easier as almost every router available today has dyndns client.. to relegate the TC to bridge and use a different router and simply port forward AFP.. Please search as there are plenty of posts about how to do it.
Give exact details of your network if you run into issues.
And think about security .. AFP is not highly secure.

  • Is the wifi faster in the new 3T time capsule (cylindrical) than the older 1T (flat box)?

I have a 4 year old 1T time capsule that is full (it's a flatter form factor). I am contemplating upgrading to a new 3T time capsule (cylindrical form factor). Aside from the extra storage, is there anything else better? Is the wifi data transfer faster?

The new Time Capsule features "ac" wireless capability.......2-3 times faster wireless than your current Time Capsule.....but in order to realize the benefit of "ac", your Mac needs to be capable of receiving an "ac" wireless signal.
If it's not, then  you should expect about the same performance as you have now.
Both your older Time Capsule and the newer Time Capsule support Gigabit Ethernet, so the speed capabilites would be equal over a wired connection.

  • My 5 year old Airport Expresses don't work with the new Airport Time Capsule?

My question is after wasting hours trying to install my new Airport Time Capsule, Ive noticed that the "Airport Utility" doesn't recognize any of my 4 five year old Airport Expresses. An error message says " This version of Airport Utility doens not support this (these) base stations"? Does that mean that their is no work arounds which means I have to purchase 4 replacements?

You need the older airport utility.. that can be installed on Lion or Mountain Lion.. it cannot be installed on Mavericks.. do you have an older computer even a windows one.. or can access, borrow or bribe a friend over for drinks with laptop.. then you can configure your expresses.. !!
There is a rather complex workaround on Mavericks.. when I posted it in the past.. Apple deleted it.. go figure.
    Kappy's post is still there.

  • Accessing Time Capsule from Internet

    Hi,
I have a problem to acess my TC with MacBook Air or iPad from Internet.
TC (Version 7.6.3) is connected to Internet with PPPoE connection. How to configure TC to can acess from outside? Is it necessary to define a port?
    Please advise, thank you.

Do I have to configure BTMM on my MacBook to?
If I am on a remote place, I can access TC using Air Port program, right?
Yes, there are details on setting up BTMM on the Mac..
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4907
There is plenty of angst involved of course..
    See
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3699096?start=0&tstart=0
For all kinds of issues that crop up.
Airport utility may not work.. in fact it is unlikely to since it is using a port not forwarded.
You are accessing files.. nothing else.
iPAd: There is a software (GoodReader) able to acess with AFP, but when I enter my IP adress (found over whatsmyip.com) as URL-Adress it doesnt work. It only works in WLAN inside with lokal IP adress. Any more hits??
    Thank you.
As stated I am ipadless.. and not able to test any setup of any software.. you must google yourself.
Are you entering the address correctly.. ie
    AFP://publicIPaddress
Do you have the sharing disk over WAN checked in the airport utility? See on the disks page of the utility. You will not be able to access it without that..
It is also a chance that enabling BTMM could stop direct access such as you are attempting with the ipad from working. Turn off BTMM before you start trying to access with ipad. It is totally different.. !!

  • Accessing iTunes media on Time Capsule from iPhone and iPad

    Hello!
I keep my iTunes media files on a Time Capsule and access them on my MacBook Air, having changed the location of the media files in iTunes Preferences. This works fine.
Can I do the same sort of thing on my iPad and iPhone? I know I can use "home sharing" via my MacBook, if I am having to use that, I may as well play the media on my MacBook anyway. I would like to be able to do it directly, without another computer being involved.
I have tried apps like Buzz player, which is tedious in the extreme, and plays vidoes jerkily, if at all. I want to be able to connect iTunes directly to the media on the Time Capsule, if you see what I mean.
And if not, why not, Apple?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Google finds many articles on how to move your iTunes to an external hard drive.
Here's the first hit in the list:

Fairly long article but it does seem to cover nearly everything.

  • I have a rMBP that needs to be backed up.  The Wi-Fi in my house is poor and I do not have an Ex. Hard Drive.  I want to get the new Airport Time Capsule, but can you accomplish it's benefits wirelessly?

    So...
I have a modem across the house and my room is at the opposite side.  I believe that you have to connect the Airport Time Capsule via modem cable in order for you to appreciate the benefits of the boosted up Wi-Fi.  However, I want the airport time capsule in my room, without having any extra cables plugged into it AND also benefit from the Wifi boosts, as well as back it up wirelessly.
Is there any way to do this?  I was reading up on it and there are search queries bringing up "bridges" and all that stuff, but I haven't found a clear answer on it.
    So, to recap:
I want the Airport Time Capsule to not only back up my rMPB and help my wifi signal out, but to do all of this with no additional cables having to be plugged in.
    Thanks.

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

  • Can ipad access the file on time capsule

Can the files such as movies stored on time capsule be accessed and displayed by ipad

Of course, you need an app like "FileBrowser" or any other app that does the same.
Your movies need to have the mp4 format, or any other format the iPad can read.
wmv, avi, mpg, etc won't be compatible.
Then you have to know the IP address of the Time Capsule on your network to access it.
