Accident: Dropped 300+ jpegs on desktop and Finder froze
Editing a bunch of jpegs for my Gallery, I went to drag them to a desktop folder and I must have un-clicked too early or too late. The file are all on my desktop now and Finder is not responding. . . I get a beach ball every twenty or seconds. It has been doing this for a half hour. I am trying to just delete them. I tried accessing screwing around on the desktop of the messed up Mac via my iBook but nothing seems to affect it. Ideas?
Restarted after almost an hour (of kicking myself) and when the OS booted, the jpegs were gone. Maybe in all of my "ghost clicking" I had actually rid the system of the files but the desktop couldn't respond?! Oh well, resolved.

Hard Disk (Macintosh HD) gone from my desktop and Finder sidebar.
Hello. My hard disk is gone from my desktop and I can't find it in Finder as well. I tried logging into a different user account and it doesn't show up either. I don't know if a cache file in my first account might be the problem. Also if I try Shift>Command and press C, it is not there either I just see my network icon. Any help is appreciated.

In Mavericks I started using different desktops for different sets of programs, and I regularly use command-tap to move from one app to the next. But I have one problem: if the other program is on a different desktop and if it has a 'Find and Replace' window open, that F&R window will migrate to the desktop I'm at, whereas the document windows of that program stay where they are, and even the usual command-` will not reveal them. I can access them through the Window menu, but then I loose the F&R window … Most annoying.
I don't think it is a problem of the particular app. I tried NisusWriter, BBEdit and Scrivener. It seems all programs that have a seperate F&R window are affected.
Anyone any idea how this can be remedied (if it can)?

what do you mea with default console? Is it the external window that Forms can run in, or is it the Forms MDI window itself? If you could give us an idea of what you are trying to achieve then maybe the answer is an easy one to give.

HELP- My itunes won't recognize my ipod! But it's on my desktop and finder
I've plugged my ipod into my USB on the side of my macbook as I always do after downloading some new music. But my itunes isn't recognizing that my ipod nano is plugged in. I can see it on my desktop and it is there in my finder, but I don't know how to make i sync. I've never had a problem before and haven't made any recent changes. Any ideas?
I am having the same problem with my iPod and iPhone along with many other people. I am in Canada also and called Applecare but they were no use. I suggest you give them a call and try and get them to view these messages as they do not beleive it is a major issue.

Invisible Startup Disk Icon on Desktop and Finder
Today suddenly I found that my Startup disk icon was gone from the desktop and from the Finder. I did some searching and found the following solution that may be useful for someone else:

from a Terminal window, type:
ls -lOd /
(That's lowercase ell, lowercase ess, space, minus, lowercase ell, capital oh, lowercase dee, space, forward slash)
You should get something like this:
hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin - 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
Sounds like you might see something like this instead:
hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
drwxrwxr-t@ 32 root admin hidden 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
(note it says "hidden" instead of "-")
To fix this, type:
sudo chflags nohidden /
and provide your admin password. You won't get any output back from the command but the icon should now appear on your desktop, and the hidden flag should go away if you repeat the 'ls -lOd /' command.
And just in case you missed it above, you've got to be sure Hard disks are turned on in Finder General Preferences under "Show these items on the Desktop"A few days after trying the solution in my previous post, I realized that the Startup disk icon was still missing from Devices in the Finder's sidebar.
So, following some advice from other forums, I went and deleted com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist from homedirectory/library/preferences. Then did a control-option-click on Finder in the Dock and chose "relaunch".
So this completed the fix. Coincidentally this also fixed a "freeze" issue that I was having. -
Dropped connection when using Desktop and laptop
I have a Motorala cable modem connected to a Linksys 10/100 5-port Work Group Switch. I have my desktop connected to this switch and have a WRT5G Wireless Router connected also. The problem is that when my lap top is connected to the internet, the desktop does not connect and vice versa. When the desktop is connected, the laptop shows that there is a wireless connection, but the browser comes up saying no connection. Any advice?
Why exactly do you have this setup? The normal setup would be cable modem connecting to router. Computers (wired and wireless) connecting to router.
How exactly do you "connect" your desktop or laptop to the internet? What do you do to get a connection?
What you have is two devices connected directly the modem and thus your ISP. Unless the modem is actually a modem/router this won't work if your ISP does not allow more then 1 internet connection at a time.
I suspect this slightly setup is the actual problem. If you use the desktop, the desktop gets the IP address from the ISP. Now the desktop is using internet connection through the modem. Thus, your router cannot connect to the internet nor your laptop.
When your router connects to the internet it gets the IP address from the ISP. Again, the desktop cannot get an IP address anymore because the internet connection is already used.
The normal setup is that the internet port of your router is connected to the modem. The purpose of a router like the WRT is to share a single internet connection among several computers - wired and wireless.
Therefore I would suggest you connect the internet port of the WRT to the modem directly and hook up the desktop to a LAN port of the WRT. You can also connect the switch to a LAN port. Now desktop and laptop share the internet connection established by the WRT. -

I have a Macbook Pro OS X Lion (Version 10.7.5).
When I turned on my laptop and signed in, a box appeared that says "The application "Finder" unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to restore its windows again?" and IT KEEPS BLINKING. I try clicking it to restore but it doesn't do anything. And on top of that, ALL MY FILES that I had are gone from my desktop. It's empty. However, I can still get on the internet or click on any icon in my dock except for Finder. It keeps jumping up and down and I can't do anything!
I tried quitting Google Drive, nothing. I went into safe mode and it's doing the same thing!
I also tried researching and seen that it's best to go into the Finder, find my exact folder and delete because it could be corrupt. Problem is I can't even click or get into Finder. This is all very frustrating because I haven't done anything different from the many times I used it until I signed on again today. Can someone please help?

Desktop and finder window icons missing
Some of the icons on the top of my desktop suddenly went blank. they are there since I can click where they were and still use them. The same has happened to the top of the finder window as well. Here are some screen shots. Any one have an idea how to fix this? I ran MainMenu Pro disk permissions repair, cleaned the cache, did all maintenance and restarted with the no result.
Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

No icons for items on my desktop and finder doesn't open
I'm not sure what I've done, but for some reason I cannot access my hard drive or my finder (among other things). Spotlight will locate items but I can't open those items from spotlight. I recently installed CleanApp and deleted a number of files that seemed appropriate. I ran Disk Utility to repair disk permissions and mostly it said that there were various permissions that were wrong and it would not repair them. I am running Leopard 10.5.1. Also, I cannot access my external hard drive on my desktop though I can see that it is attached when I search a location through an application>open program. HELP!
It sounds like you have deleted some files that are required for the desktop to show up properly. I'm not sure exactly what will need replacing; maybe someone else here can tell you that.
My solution would be to reinstall 10.5.1; you will want to back up any important files have installed on the Mac that you won't be able to reinstall. Hopefully you can do this via your external drive, or possibly copy them to blank CDs or DVDs if possible.
One way to check on this, and/or back up any files you need would be to try and startup your Mac from the system software disks that came with it, or your Leopard disks, if they are different. -
Blinking menu bar, icons on desktop and Finder windows.
This happened after I restarted the computer for installing software updates. The only thing that didn't blink was the dock. When I open an application, it blinks as well, but a little slower, so that gives me time to click around. Even shutting down/restarting is a problem, since the menu bar blinks so quickly that I couldn't click on it. I had to hold down the power button to shut down.
I tried creating a new account and logged in. Everything remains normal in the new account.
I went into Library>Preferences, deleted the file called "com.apple.finder.plist" and restarted. It didn't work.
Is there anything else I can do? I really don't want to reformat my mac and lose all the applications installed.Have you installed any third-party utilities and/or menubar utilities, contextual menu items, preference panes, etc. These most typically are the cause of such a problem. Also corrupted cache files may cause problems. Use a utility such as TinkerTool System to clear all system, user, and font caches then immediately reboot. You should not need to erase your drive to fix the problem, but the problem is definitely caused by something you either installed that is incompatible or something corrupted in your Home folder such as a preference file.

Missing desktop, and finder not working
My Macboook pro has gone haywire. There is nothing on my desktop, not even a menu bar, just the dock. With that I can open the few items that are listed. I can't open the trash. When I open an application the menu bar appears with only that item no clock or anyhting else that should be there. I can't shut down the computer from the blue apple. The only way I can see the hard drive is to open the mail and add an attachment, then it allows me to look, and add the attachment.
I added a new user, and tat works fine, but I don't how to get to my user account from there.
I am totally lost at this point. I have looked thru the topics, and seen many similar problems, but they were all able to actually do things with tere computers.

Accident: Dragged thousands of jpeg files onto desktop and lexar drive and unable to trash
In a failed attempt to copy thousands of photos from iphoto onto a lexar jumpdrive, I fumbled and somehow managed to drop them onto my desktop and the lexar drive. Was in a rush to leave and fumbled a bit more not knowing exactly what I was doing and just turned the mac off and back on. All items that were initially on my desktop disappeared. Figured out I had those thousands of photos on my desktop (invisable though to see) and also they were "zero" in size. I could view these if I looked at my desktop via a folder on the harddrive. Being able to do so I gathered up my other items and put them in folders off of the desktop and then proceeded to pull all the "zero" files into the trash. Got the message that another application was using these and do I still want to trash them - I did so I proceeded with each individual file asking the same question. After I shutdown. The next day started up and the files had not deleted. I decided to put the lexar drive in (had not looked at it yet since pulled it out in the beginning). That also had files that I am unable to delete.
help!I think that I got the problem solved only It was extremely time consuming. I had 60,000 zero files on the desktop and I selected a bunch at a time, held the control button, selected "move to the trash", answered "continue" from a pop up (told me that they were being used by an application and that it may make the app not function correctly - I ignored that) and continued until all 60,000 were gone. I am assuming the application it was refering to was the finder? I then went to the disk utility and repaired the Disk Permissions (not sure if that helped or not). Anyways, the finder is working fine - so far!
I figured that this same process would have to be done with the jump drive and had not done that let. You saved me! I just reformatted that with the Disk Utility and I am back to business! I will certainly keep in mind the removing of the desktop preference file if this happens again and my curiosity is up wondering if that would have saved a whole lot of mindless hours clicking "continue" 60,000 times.

I have an external hard drive that I have been using for years. All of a sudden my mac will not recognize the external as a "save as" device location. But the external does show up on my desktop and I can open it to drag and drop items. What happened and how do I get my mac to rerecognize the device?!?!?
