Accidental Removal of Time Machine Disk
Hello,
By accident, I selected my Time Machine disk, then I moved the disk from my Finder's sidebar to my desktop resulting in a a puff of smoke. Now I am unable to access the disk as it is grayed out. I've tried utilizing every option under Disk Utility with no success. I believe that I need to figure out a way to remount the disk? Please help me if you can?

If lllaass suggestion does not work, a Restart will mount any drives it finds connected and ready.

Time Machine Disk Crashes Windows
Hi everyone,
When booting into Windows, I have been getting a blue screen and crash. I noticed that this problem goes away when I remove the Time Machine disk from my machine. The disk is mounted internally in my Mac Pro, so it is a little inconvenent to have to remove it everytime I boot into windows. Any ideas?
The same issue was raised here by another user, but no responses, so was hoping that maybe there's an answer now. Thanks!!

Yup, that's the sort of thing that happens sometimes in this scenario.

But if I click on "Manual Setup," it will time out. If I try to restart the router from the menu bar option, it will time out. The only way to fix it is to manually unplug the router and restart it that way. Is anyone else having a similar issue, or know how to prevent it?
That, I suspect, is a different problem (and mostly out of my area).

I recently replaced my old Macbook Pro with a new Macbook Pro Retina.
The original MBP had Time Machine set up on an external HD, and I also had some manually saved/backed up files (stuff that didn't need incremental backups; very old stuff) on the disk as well, in folders. This worked fine and well for the life of the original MBP.
When I set up the MBPr, I did not elect to transfer everything over from a Time Machine disk, as I wanted a Fresh Install; I chose to just re-download/install the apps I needed from the App Store. Much cleaner, more stable. I updated to Yosemite immediately so, it gave me more of a clean install.
The problem is, Time Machine now won't read any Time Machine backups from that disk. Migration assistant can pull data from it, but it's a bit wonky. It was easier to just manually copy over what I needed.
Now, I just want to "reset", and completely remove the old Time Machine data from the external hard drive, since it is completely useless to me now (I can't access it on this computer, and it's taking up space). I want to remove the Time Machine data, as if it were never there, but keep my other folders/files that are on the disk (so, a format is not feasible).
I will then set the disk up as a new, fresh Time Machine disk for the new MBPr.
What is the proper method for removing Time Machine data from an external disk (which doesn't seem to be associated with this machine anyway)? I know a simple rm -rf will cause problems.

Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.
I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.

8/24/12 5:07:27.505 PM ath[1217]: _AMDDeviceAttachedCaI don't think you quite understand how Time Machine really works. But then hardly anyone does. Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:

2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.

Hi guys,
My Time Machine disk keeps ejecting itself. Once it has ejected itself I cannot write to it or even format it, I usually have to boot Yosemite/Mavericks off a USB and in disk utility there, repartition and format the disk. It will then backup and be fine, but a few days later it will fail again.
I have tried this with 2 drives, a WD 340gb and a 1TB seagate and get the same results, although the seagate DOES seem to be more temperamental. I have looked around the net and found threads with these issues but never a total solution. I know that Linc Davies is an expert on these things so if you're around Linc, any help you could give would be amazing!
I read in one of Lincs previous threads to go to console and then system and filter "backup". I have done this and dumped the log. I will paste it below.

Time machine disk is full - may have inadvertent backups
Hi,
A couple weeks ago I cloned my MacBook Pro and forgot about it and went to bed. Is it possible that it got backed up to my Timemachine hard disk as a separate Mac? If yes, does anyone know how I may find and remove it? I've also left this clone and a separate installation on another partition plugged in though booted from my internal hard drive. Could that have been backed up too and how would I remove that?
I'm asking because my MBP has a 320 gb hard disk and the Time Machine back up disk is 1 TB and had something like 600 GB available a few weeks ago.
Last night it stopped the back up and said the disk was full and sure enough there's less than 1 GB available.
I've never run into a full Time Machine disk, and I don't want to toss away old stuff for multiple copies of the past few weeks so if anyone can advise what to do to trouble shoot I will be grateful.Ok. After poking around I discovered the two external partitions did get backed up. So I went into System prefs > Time Macine and turned them off.
Now the question is will Time Machine delete them automatically or do I have to go hunting for them to delete them? -

Data Recovery from time machine is something tough job even the best data recovery software can not do so because the complex structue in time machine is not understood by any data recovery software which Apple uses. Time Machine puts your backup in a sparse bundle disk image (backups.backupdb). However you can try some data recovery software which may recover someting from your trash. There are software having demo version which can show you the recovered files on preview if you found any of your important file then there is a good chance to recover your data and your good Luck..REMEMBER FIRST TRY THEN BUY

Remove all time machine backups from a certain date and backward
Right, so here's what I want to do: I want to navigate back to a specific date -- for arguments sake let's say June -- and remove all time machine backups from that date and earlier. Is there an easy way to do so without going through every entry in time machine and "removing backup"?
I want to migrate my time machine backups to a new drive, but realize I don't really need EVERYTHING here since its for an older machine. So what I'd like to do is get my rather large 1.5 TB time machine backup down to a more manageable size and then migrate it to a new drive.I don't recommend deleting Time Machine snapshots. If you have multiple backup volumes, which you should have, and you need to repurpose one of them, you should just erase it. But if you want to try it anyway, and if you're running OS X 10.8 or later (not any older version), see below.
Don't attempt this procedure unless you have at least one other complete backup of all the data. You should have another backup anyway — one is never enough to be safe.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the "sparsebundle" file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Drag the ones you don't want to the Trash and empty. Sometimes, for unknown and unpredictable reasons, the Trash will fail to empty with a cryptic error message. I don't know of any way to recover from that condition except to erase the backup volume and start over. -

I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
All systems are running 10.6.8.Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

Two computers backed up on the same Time machine disk, one computer is dead. How to access data?

I backed up two different computers on the same time machine disk. Now, one of my computer is dead. I can see the backups on my time machine disk. How can I get the backup data that belongs to dead computer. When I enter time machine, I only have access to corresponding backup. I do not want to destroy the backups. My timemachine backup structure looks like below:

-->Computer-2
Now, my Computer-1 is dead, and I am using Compter-2. If possible I wan to know a way of accessing Computer-1 data without destroying any other backups/files etc. Than you!I loathe sending people offsite for information except WRT time machine. Bootcamp 4, Windows 7, Time machine disk
Hi,
I'm currently having an weird issue with Windows 7 x64 on my Macbook Pro.
I'm getting a bluescreen of death each time my USB Time Machine disk is connected.
Any other HFS+ disk doesn't make Windows crash, it's only the Time Machine disk.
I've try with Bootcamp 3.2 and i'm getting the same issue.
The only think I can see is the upgrade of Lion who modify my Time Machine disk.
Cheers,The version you have downloaded is an upgrade one, and you need a PC with Windows to download and burn it to a DVD or USB drive. You can't do it with your Mac, as it's a EXE file. Also, you can't use it legally unless you have already Windows on the computer

Copy error -36 when copying from Time Machine disk to Mac
Since using OS X 10.6.(.6), I can't copy certain files from my Time Machine disk to the Mactintosh hard disk without getting a copy error -36. The error doesn't occur with all files: for example pdf files will copy without problems, but Filemaker Pro files and iCal files don't. May be it's important to mention that when I retrieve files from the Time Machine disk, I have to mount the "sparse bundle" with my user files first and then drag the files to the desktop or an other place. This is because I'm running File Vault. If I try to retrieve files that were backed up under OS X 10.5, I get no copying errors at all. So it looks as if Snow Leopard has something to do with it. Is there anybody who has seen this problem before and knows how to solve it?
Ok, I finally was able to complete the Disk Utility Repair, and it says everything is ok. Still the problem in restoring presists.
One thing I noticed is that most files that Time Machine restore chokes on have an added set of permissions added to the file or folder with the same user name as mine, and the permissions level says "Custom". Thus it has 2 sets of permissions defined with the same user name, one with Read/Write and another with the same name that says "Custom." Am I explaining this well? Maybe this is a clue? -
How to Move a Shared Time Machine disk to another Mac?
Hi,
I have a network with three macs. Initially, I had a Time Machine disk connected via USB to Mac A. Mac A and Mac B used that disk for TM backups.
Now I have coupled the Time Machine disk (via Firewire if that matters) to Mac C.
Mac B can't find the Time Machine disk anymore (as well as Mac A I guess), although the TM disk itself has still the same name. When I explicitly open the TM disk on Mac C in the Finder on Mac B, Mac B does not recognise it as its original TM disk.
After I clicked Change Disk in the Time Machine preferences on Mac B, I was able to reselect the TM disk. However, it doesn't see that there is already a long history present from Mac B and Time Machine plans to back up from scratch.
How can I tell Mac A and Mac B that the TM disk that is now connected to Mac C is still the same disk?

Time Machine Disk on One Machine Backing up a Second

I have an iMac with an external hard drive I use for time machine. I am going to get a MacBook Air and want to use the same hard drive for Time Machine. I know you can store 2 different computer time machine backups onto the same drive, however I do not have an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule. My question then is, is there any way to have the MacBook Air backup to the time machine disk plugged in locally to the iMac via the Network or would I need to get a Airport Extreme or Time Capsule? I'd prefer not having to disconnect/reconnect the time machine disk every time I want it to back up each machine (kinda defeats the point of it doing things automatically). Is this possible? See #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. I'd strongly recommend that you partition the drive, as noted there.
The backups made over a network will be stored differently than the ones done locally; in a disk image sparse bundle. -
Time machine disk permissions changed to read only
Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive.This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.
