Accidentally changed format of preference files

Hi all,
I was trying to resolve a problem in a programme I was having so I dragged and dropped its preference file along with another onto the desktop. I accidentally dropped one onto the other and now all preference files (mac apps not plists) have been converted to excel files which can't be read. Now new files which I open from my hard drive open as .exec files!!
How do I can I right my wrongs??

OK, firstly thanks for getting back to me and sorry my post was confusing. I am a little confused! The problem really comes in two parts:
1) I use a brainwave analysis programme called Netstation, its a programme in which you can edit raw acquisition data. I was having trouble with it and had been advised that pulling the preference file (from HD/User/Username/Library/Preferences) onto the desktop would help. I cant remember exactly but when I did this it said something about Adobe Device Central so I then tried to pull that onto the desktop too - which I then accidentally dropped onto the Netstation prefs file. Neither of these were .plist, the .plist file are fine. But now all of the prefs file which weren't .plist have changed to excel file formats. The thumbnail of these even reads "Can you read this? I don't think so".
2) With regards to the general functioning of the computer and programmes it seemed to be fine, until I tried to open some raw Netstation data files from my external hard drive (transfered from the acquisition computer). It is these raw data files which now show as .exec files on my computer and will not open. I believe this to be due to the fact that I have changed the preference files format, but cannot be 100% sure.

With the document close, control click > Print Document.

I accidentally changed permissions of all the files of my system drive (10.8.5)

Hi,
By mistake, I accidentally changed the permissions for all the files of my entire system drive. On the root of my system drive, I've put on "Read and Write" for Admin, staff, and everyone, and applied this change to all the files of my entire drive.
Since I did that, I experiment issues with some applications which worked perfectly before that : when I try to open some applications (not all, just some), it tells me things like "something is wrong in the installation of the application", or "can't open the following application", or it simply just doesn't open it.
I have to mention I have no Time Machine or backups of my drive, as I bought my mac three days ago and spent the two last days installing plugins and applications on my drive (for audio production). So I can't replace my drive with a backup of the system before I accidentally changed all permissions.
Also, I repaired permissions on my drive with the disk utility, but all the app that doesn't work are from external developpers (not apple).
Is there any way to "repair" this without having to reinstall all the app that are causing problems ? It would be a pain for me as I just spent 48hours installing everything...

You need a backup, preferably more than one. This is an example of why.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

It sounds like the downloaded file does not open or execute as it's supposed to (which, for instance, would happen if what you downloaded was a Java application, but you didn't have Java installed).
If you are allowed to, give us the URL and we'll have a look. Also, you should add what version of Mac OS X and of Safari you are using, and you should correct your profile (which says "Mac Pro" -- this forum is for the MacBook Pro, which is a different computer from the Mac Pro).

To change "package" file format to "flat" files for iDisk

First, let me thank Yvan Koenig for providing a great script to convert "Word2Pages"...
There is a problem at present discussed on the MobileMe forum page, with files not uploading to iDisk using Finder. One problem is that whereas "flat" files load, "package" files do not. (There is a choice in the Pages Preferences for these options.) This limitation also applies to emailling files.
I used Yvan's "Word2Pages" batch conversion script for hundreds of files which saved me days of work. However, to load these onto my iDisk I need to convert them to "flat" files.
Please can I humbly ask him to write a similar script for converting files from "package2flat". I am not so advanced as he in computer literacy and would surely appreciate his help.

Thank you finding a solution to the default setting. I wonder how many Pages 09 files have been produced as packages with umpteen subfolders for things that will never be used. No wonder my Finder kept on crashing when I tried to upload to my iDisk.
I have written a bug report to Apple via Pages so hope they will change the default setting for "Copy Audio and Movies to the Document".
I am puzzled about your Word2Pages script still producing "package" files even after making the changes to default values that you describe. Could it be that the code is calling up old default values from somewhere else. There seems to be a plist in the Application folder and another in the User library.
Is this the relevant piece of code?

About:config does show some default values but I need the source from which about:config picks up the default value.
Any help in this direction is greatly appreciated.

I have Word 2011 on Mac 10.6.8. I write my papers and save them as .docx I submit them to my school online but every time My professor opens them he says the margins are set wrong. He said to save them as a Word-Pc format. How do I do this? Do I save it as RTF or as PDF? He has to be able to make comments on the paper after along the right side. I can not ask him to download anything t make it easier for me. I should be the one doing it correctly. I just do not know how. Can you please tell me how I should be saving my papers so that they do not change format when he opens them on his PC?
And I do recheck and open and repen my paper to check and recheck my margins before I submit it and all is fine on my end.

I have the JVM Spec, 2nd ed., on my desk. I'm trying to find out about changes to the class file format since its publication, i.e. what are the differences between class file versions 46.0, 47.0 and 48.0?
So far, searching the JDC and the web hasn't helped. Does a document describing the changes exist?

MAPI is typically required (Outlook generally uses MAPI for communication with other applications). You will have to check your mail client. It should also be defined as the default in your OS. I have one machine I could never get it to work on, but I have the advantage of just doing it on a different machine in that case -- typically a different version of Acrobat (I generally do not have upgrades).

Change language of ePUB file exported from Pages

I have a document written in Pages with spelling language = Spanish. When exporting to ePUB format, language of the ePUB file in metadata is set to English. Among other things this causes Table of Content to have the wording "Title Page" and "Footnotes" to be written in English instead of Spanish, plus any device reading the ePUB will think that the ePUB language is English. How can I export the document so that ePUB language in metadata is set as Spanish?

Try changing your System Preference Language to Spanish by dragging it to the top of the list.
You may have to restart Pages.

Do you mean that PSD comes as a default option or that JPEG is not available no matter what?
Did you add a layer? Did you change the bit depth? Did you add transparency? The JPEG format does not support layers, nor 16-bit images, nor transparency.
