Accidentally deleted iTunes library?

Hi,
I did some clean-up on my mac and found a 4.xx GB folder in my user folder under "Music" and "iTunes". I thought it was something else than my iTunes library, since I thought iTunes uses the same kind of library as iMovie and iPhotos (one big file) and this wasn´t it.
Now iTunes says for all my songs that "The original file cannot be found". What can I do?

You can't. You get one download. This is why backup is so important.
From the itunes store terms of service:
"PRODUCTS CAN BE DOWNLOADED ONLY ONCE; AFTER BEING DOWNLOADED, THEY CANNOT BE REPLACED IF LOST FOR ANY REASON. YOU SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BACKING UP YOUR OWN SYSTEM, INCLUDING ANY PRODUCTS PURCHASED OR RENTED FROM THE ITUNES STORE THAT ARE STORED IN YOUR SYSTEM.
You can try contacting itunes support to ask for an exception.

  • Accidentally deleted iTunes, is there anyway I can download it again and have it just back up my iPod instead of clearing it of all data? All of iTunes files are still on my computer, but the actual program got deleted.

I was trying to clear space on my C drive and decided to delete programs that I didn't use or that I didn't recognize. (Bad idea, I know that now.) Anyways, accidentally deleted a program that iTunes needed to run and the computer said it would undo the uninstall and restart to fix the problem but when it restarted iTunes was gone. So my question is, after I download iTunes again, is there a way I can just backup my iPod to it's last sync (which was coincidentally right before I accidentally deleted iTunes) instead it being cleared of all its data? All of iTunes' files are still on my computer except the actual program itself.

    Hi, InsaneCharlie.
Thanks for the question.  I see you have uninstalled iTunes and want this program back.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes if present and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.  If none of your data was modified in the iTunes media folder, then your data should be present upon installation.

  • Accidentally deleted /System/Library/Framework/GSS.framework folder

Hi, I am a Programming student. While I was installing some Libraries, I accidentally deleted /System/Library/Frameworks/GSS.framework folder. It's in the trash folder and I can't reverse my actions without administrative authentication? Will I be able to install the missing Libraries off the installation disk?
    Thanks

Boot into your Recovery Volume and re-install Lion. It will be an install "in place" and shouldn't touch any of your files but hopefully restore the missingg directory. Also, hopefully you will be able to authenticate there.

  • How do I delete itunes library and move library from old windows machine to

My daughter bought a new macbook and would like to move her itunes library from the windows machine to the mac. I copied it to the mac and moved the existing itunes folder to the trash. By the way, she got 3 free downloads from Apple and they were in the library I moved to the trash bin. I then moved the backup folder to the location of the itunes folder I had deleted. When I open itunes, it sees the 3 songs in the deleted folder. How do I get itunes to recognoze the new itunes folder?

Thank you. As I understand it, if the original iTunes folder had never been populated, we would have been able to move the library exported from Windows into iTunes and preserve the playlists. Because my daughter downloaded 3 songs she does not even like, we have no way of preserving playlists? There must be some way to remove all connections to the first library. Is it possible remove the iTunes application and then either re-install it from the original disks or else download it. I know you can download iTunes for Windows, not sure if it is there for Macs. My guess is that if she starts itunes from scratch, there would be no references to the intial DB and we could then move in the folder from Windows without a problem.

  • XCode update deleted iTunes Library files

I just updated XCode, and this meant updating the part about mobile applications, and my itunes library file was deleted in the process. Is there any way to retrieve my playlists/ratings? Last backup was a while ago, guess I've lost about 1000 ratings.
    Anyone else had this happen?
I'm a DJ, so this is a bit devastating, not convinced the backup will restore things but will attempt it if there's no other way to retrieve the original XML/ITL files...
    cheers

Thankyou! I just tried however it won't let me create a new one on the external? Perhaps I have utterly stuffed up when removing the old ones. Is there a way around this? Thanks

    Ouch - a double mistake.
Select the music folder in Finder before running TM and see if that gets you there.
If not, then double-click the TM volume icon on the desktop and migrate down to a folder that has a recent date on it that is before your accident.
Click the arrow on the left of that folder name and you will see Macintosh HD
Click the arrow on that directory
    Click the arrow on Users
Click the arrow by your name
    Click the arrow by Music
What you see is what you got.
    Take it from there.
Don't do anything more than copy a file from the TM backup. *Do not* move or disturb it in any way. The copy may not be the entire set of items you want, but if they are there you should be able to retrieve them the proper way, using Finder and TM normally

  • What is best way to delete itunes library? I need to "reload"

I need to "start over" with a new itunes library. I want to start fresh and re-import all my music. Is it best to go to where all my music in on my HD and trash it (the folder that i have indicated in itunes preference) or should i got into itunes and just drag all my music to the trash and then empty the trash? Does it matter?
AND... it i am starting my library over by re-importing music - before i do that - should i be deleting any other itunes or music library files/folders in the finder? I see there are some files that seem to update themselves after closing out of itunes.
I am cleaning up a mess i got into and just want to start out really as clean as possible when i bring all the music back into itunes.
    THANKS!
    Lisa

ok... so i i just made sure all my music is all together in 1 folder and i am going to trash my old music folder that is in the itunes folder... and follow your directions - let itunes start w/new library and bring my music in. Well, last little hurdle/question. I noticed that the place where my itunes library is - on an external drive doesnt have much space left on it. The place where i gathered all my music together in order to start fresh - is a different external drive and has LOTS of free space on it.
SO... i now would like to just keep all that freshly compiled clean music right where it is but in advanced preferences I want to point to that new folder on the drive that has so much more space. So... should i delete the old music then go into itunes with a blank library and change the folder in preferences - quit and go back in and then follow your steps to loading my music? If i change the setting of where itunes looks for the music - that doesn't wipe out the old stuff... it just mixes it all up together right? I dont want that!!
i promise this is the last question - i would love to fix this problem tonight and just be DONE!
Thanks in advance for your patience and knowledge!!
    Lisa

  • Recovering deleted ITunes library

I thought I was deleting just one album but managed to delete my entire itunes library. Fortunately I still have all the media files. I back up to an external hard drive using Time Machine, however, I've been unable to re-load my former itunes library. I have used the suggest process by using the option key whilst opening itunes but nothing happens. I would say my option key only has alt on it. Anyone got anysuggestions as its taken me years to get my itunes library where it is today or rather yesterday.

When I select Music the restore button does not become active, so I tried restore iTunes folder
Yes, this is what I suggested to do.
Tbut this did not work I got message saying it failed because it was a file not a folder
You are doing this in Time Machine?
No idea why it would tell you this. You can restore both files or folders using TIme Machine.

  • Accidentally moved iTunes Library to Other User Account . . .

I accidentally moved my iTunes Library to the Other User Account under the Users/Shared/Account and now I cannot "move" it back to my Desktop. Please help.

  • Accidentally Deleted iTunes Widget

I accidentally deleted it! Anyway to get it back? i tried reinstialling bundled software...no dice!

There is no way to delete the itunes store from your ipod.
You likely have either moved it to another home page (flick you finger across the screen to see the other home pages), or you have restrictions (in settings) set.
You can find both of these things in the manual:

  • Deleted iTunes library from laptop - help!

I have just (stupidly) deleted my iTunes library instead of transferring to my new external hard drive... the recycle bin was already full so there is nothing in there. I followed the instructions on recreating a library but nothing happened ... is there anything I can do?? I have all the songs/downloads on my iPod - is there anyway of restoring the files from there or will iTunes just delete them if I plug it in?? I also purchased some new music today just before deleting - can I still get them back?
I'm not massively tech-minded so if anyone can help me using simple words (!!) I'd be really really really grateful!!!

You should find this post from Zevoneer helpful if you want to recover music from your iPod.

  • Correct method for deleting iTunes library?

I have a new Mac and have successfully transferred my iTunes library from my old Mac to my new Mac.
I have made a copy of the library on a portable hard drive, just in case there is a problem with the library in the future.
How do I now delete the library from the old Mac so that I can save the space on the hard drive?
Vast majority of my library is downloaded CDs (which I want to delete) and there are just a few purchased downloads via iTunes (which ideally I would keep but not essential).  I'm presuming the latter can still be accessed via my iTunes log-on, once the library has been cleared.

You did copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder, correct?
I copied everything that was within the Music folder in Finder. The copied folder size was exactly the same as the original folder in Finder so I'm assuming it's copied fine.

    Delet the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder.
Do you mean delete everything within iTunes?
The folders within iTunes other than "iTunes Music" (by far the largest) are Album Artwork (quite big); Automatically Add to iTunes; iPod Games and a few others.  I'm presuming they can all be deleted but will iTunes still be in tact (but empty)?

Sure. Just open up Time Machine and choose a time frame when your library still existed. Find the file and click restore.
