Accidentally deleted mach_kernel, computer only boots windows

Hello, in a boneheaded move accidentally deleted mach_kernel and now my computer only boots Windows. I had just backed up my hard drive with time machine earlier in the day. I have a macbook from 2008. was running 10.5.8.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's the first time I see that an user deletes the OS X kernel by mistake. Be more careful the next time.
As you made a Time Machine backup before, it's easy to recover all your files:
1. Insert the Mac OS X Leopard DVD and press the C key while your computer is starting to start from the DVD.
2. After the disc has started, go to Utilities menu, choose the option to restore the backup and follow the steps

I checked @ http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/features.html#reminders and it says under Multi Accounts: "Reminders works with CalDAV services like Google Calendar and Yahoo! Calendar. You can also create reminders that appear only on your Mac."

Quit Safai (double tap the home button, hold the app icon until it wiggles, tap , double tap the home button gain)
Settings > iCloud > Turn off Safari > Delete from phone then turn Safari back on

  • Mac OS drives no longer visible, can only boot windows.

I have 4 internal drives and 1 external drive on my Mac Pro. Three drives are Mac OS, on internal drive is XP, and one is Win 7. At the moment I can only boot from the Windows drives. The Mac drives are not visible from boot camp or at startup holding the option button down. I know the cause, but I dont know how to fix it.
I caused the problem while booted into Win 7. I was trying to install VS2010 beta 2. The program failed to install, and I found out the problem was that the installer was trying to access the Mac disks. I removed the drive numbers from the 3 Mac disks, and the installation worked. After I relettered the disks I was able to see them from Win 7 (not XP).
I assume I somehow messed up bootcamp. I have no idea of how to fix this. I would appreciate any help.

    We have a BootCamp forum.
Do any of the drives show up in Disk Utility?
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.

  • How to retrieve from cloud something accidentally deleted from computer

I deleted songs from my iTunes folder to free disc space as iTunes kept freezing up. The problem is that I accidentally deleted a couple that I want back. They still show in my iTunes library but it cannot locate them in the folder. Updating match briefly gives me a cloud by the song which immediately disappears. If I click to delete them from iTunes, it warns me that they will be deleted from the cloud which I don't want to do. How do I get these back? They are available on my iPhone and other computer for download. I though the purpose of Match was to free space on our hard drives and keep stuff stored ion "the cloud". I don't see the point if they can't be sent to the cloud and retrieved easily as needed. I have already tried turning match off and then back on again.

If you want to remove tracks from the iTunes library you should always do it through iTunes; never delete the files from the Finder because then iTunes will still have a pointer in its DB to the file that no longer exists. This causes exactly the trouble you are experiencing.
To download the tracks from the cloud delete the "track" from the iTunes library by highlighting the track, or tracks, and typing Option+delete on the keyboard. Do not hide the track in the cloud. You will now be able to download the track from the cloud.

iTunes Match is not a backup service and should not be relied on as such. You should read this: FAQ: Why iTunes Match Can Not Be Used as a Backup. The purpose of iTunes Match is to give you access to all your music on all your devices from almost anywhere. It is your responsibility to backup your personal data, including all your iTunes Store purchases.

  • HP G71 Notebook computer not booting Windows 7 asking for installation disc

Suddenly I was getting////// like this in the search window, tried to run Norton, it  seems to get stuck so I turned it off and then tried to restart, it made strange noise signal, beep..beep, which I never heard before  After repeated trials got into memory check message , and it went though and appeared fine, but still could not boot it, somehow got a message
that battery is  low needs to be changed, followed  HP instruction  from another computer to drain and replug, but  contine to get message that Windows failed to starte, the start program may have been changed, need to insert Windows Installation disc, which  I don't seem to have with me presently , probably misplaced,as the computer was bought some 10+ years ago.
What do I do, and how do I recover my documents, even if it is fixed. Appreciate any advise! Not very computer savy at age 79.

    Hi @Taslim,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a wonderful  place to find answers and information!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I grasp that when you tried to start your notebook that Windows failed to start and prompted you  to insert an installation disk.  You tried doing a hard or forced reset but to no avail.  You do not  have your recovery CD/DVD disks to insert as computer is 10+ years old.
You can try doing a recovery without the disk. HP PCs - Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7)
The recovery process will present you with the opportunity to backup your personal files to prevent data loss so you will not need to worry about losing your information if you choose that option.
HP PCs - Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 7)
If you are not able to access the recovery option you will need to contact HP support to  acquire a recovery kit.

  • RAM Slot Faulty? Computer Only Boots With One Module of RAM

Ok, so my Macbook Pro is out of warranty and my 100gb HDD was getting a bit tiny, so I decided to upgrade it myself.
After following directions on iFixit, the harddrive went in without a hitch. When I put it back together and boot it up, the latch/sleep light came on, hdd spun up, fans spun, CD spun however the screen refused to turn on.
So I tried resetting PMU, PRAM etc to no avail (would not accept keystrokes). Then I had a fiddle with the RAM (there is 2 512mb modules) and basically worked out that if I have either one module in the top and nothing in the bottom everything was A-OK. But if I put either one by itself in the bottom or have both together (either way around) the computer would do the same thing as before (screen would not turn on but made all other usual sounds). Does this mean the bottom RAM slot is faulty?? If so would the logic board have to then be replaced?!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That's exactly what it sounds like that the RAM slot is bad. Unfortunately you also might have damaged it yourself in doing all the iFixit instructions. And yes a logicboard replacement would be in order if you couldn't get anything to work. As long as you have something limping along I'd save the money for the logicboard replacement, and in the future have an authorized service center do such installation while you are still under AppleCare with the proviso they promise you to document it under AppleCare that they did it and they will remove the RAM if it ever was found to be bad in the future so that you have no risk of losing your AppleCare in case an accident happened in the installation. If no authorized service center in your area will give you that sort of stipulation in writing, be sure only to buy machines build to order with the parts you need up front, and don't expect to be able to upgrade it in the future.

  • Macbook pro only boot with R key

    I have a problem with a macbook pro .
I have snow leopard and after running onyx my computer only boot with the R key pressed , I have tried option-command-PR , reset SMC , repair permissions without success .
I have an external apple led cinema but with or without the error continues .
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Why did you try booting with the R key pressed? From what I recall that key simply resets the screen settings, and shouldn't have anything to do with your system starting or not. I would remove it from the external display until we can get this resolved.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with your NVRAM. Try booting with this key sequence cmd-opt-n-v.

  • I accidentally deleted Garageband on my MacBook Pro, version 10.6.8.  The new version of Garageband is only compatible with 10.9 and above.  Is it possible to still get the older version?  OR, can I get another copy of the startup CD  for my computer

I accidentally deleted GarageBand on my MacBook Pro, version 10.6.8.  The new version of GarageBand is only compatible with 10.9 and above.  Is it possible to still get the older version?  OR, can I get another copy of the startup CD that came with my computer so that I can reinstall GarageBand?

The new version of GarageBand is only compatible with 10.9 and above.
If your Mac can run MacOS X 10.6.8, it probably can be upgraded to Yosemite, if you don't have to stick to Snowleopard for other reasons.
Is it possible to still get the older version?
Amazon or eBay are still selling iLife '11 installer disks, and you could reinstall GarageBand from these DVDs. But it will be expensive.
Have you checked your backups, if you can restore GarageBand from a backup?
OR, can I get another copy of the startup CD that came with my computer so that I can reinstall GarageBand?
Sometimes the AppleStore Support will replace missing installer CDs for a fee.

  • I partitioned a small drive for a windows program, and now the computer only wants to boot to Windows.  How do I get back to Mac so I can have a choice of drives?

I partitioned a small drive for a windows program, and now the computer only wants to boot to Windows.  How do I get back to Mac so I can have a choice of drives?

That doesn't sound good. It sounds like the power outage might have corrupted the partition for OS X. I would suggest booting from the Install DVD that came with your Mac while holding down the C key. Once you have selected the language start up Disk Utility from the pull down menu and repair the disk. Once you have done that then repair permissions also.

  • My boot camp fail to install and at the same time i accidentally deleted Mac OS

while i was doing my boot camp i accidentally deleted Mac OS. and my boot camp fail to operate. when i restart it only appear window the window keep asking me to reboot due to some missing file.

What version of OS X did your MBP ship with? Do you have the original installation disc(s) or did it ship with Lion or Mountain Lion.
If it shipped with an installation disk, you're just going to have to boot from that disc and erase your drive and reinstall the version of OS X that came with your computer. If your computer shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, you're going to have to erase your drive and use Internet Recovery to install the OS that shipped with your computer (do this by holding down the Command, option and R keys on boot).
I hope that you have a backup?

  • Accidentally deleted bonjour from my computer.  iTunes will not open.  Help Please.

Accidentally deleted Bonjour from my computer.  iTunes will not open.  Running Windows XP. Help please.

Uninstalling and then reinstalling your iTunes should also get your Bonjour reinstalled.
For the reinstall, use an installer downloaded from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
... or you could get it back via your Apple Software Update for Windows.
If you'd prefer not to uninstall iTunes, try the following procedure.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the Bonjour.msi (or Bonjour64.msi) to do a standalone Bonjour install.

  • Windows 7 Installation Media Only Boots into Recovery

Ever since I've updated to Windows 8, I have been really pleased. Everything works fine but when I was automatically updated to windows 8.1, I wasn't happy. I mostly use my PC for gaming and emulating my favourite classic game consoles. But windows 8.1 either
doesn't allow games to play, and makes my emulators run at 15 FPS (normally they run at 55-60). And now, I cant install Graphics drivers! I used to be able to on windows 8. 8.1 will not let me run any of my old Windows 7 Apps either,
So, after spending hours backing up my date, ready to start a fresh windows 7 installation, I figured out that I cannot upgrade, or even start the installation from the USB drive!
I had lots of issues with Windows Vista and used the same installation media to fix the OS. Now, the installation ONLY boots into recovery mode!
Luckily, I use Debian KDE on the side, So I am able to use my computer, but not play any games.
Is there any way to have the installation media boot into Win7 Setup?

    Hi,
Could you provide with a screen shoot?
Please test the USB drive in another pc.
If it is the same issue, it would be caused by the USB  drive.
And then follow the steps to create a bootable USB drive.
Create a Bootable USB Flash Drive

  • Accidentally deleted iTunes, is there anyway I can download it again and have it just back up my iPod instead of clearing it of all data? All of iTunes files are still on my computer, but the actual program got deleted.

I was trying to clear space on my C drive and decided to delete programs that I didn't use or that I didn't recognize. (Bad idea, I know that now.) Anyways, accidentally deleted a program that iTunes needed to run and the computer said it would undo the uninstall and restart to fix the problem but when it restarted iTunes was gone. So my question is, after I download iTunes again, is there a way I can just backup my iPod to it's last sync (which was coincidentally right before I accidentally deleted iTunes) instead it being cleared of all its data? All of iTunes' files are still on my computer except the actual program itself.

    Hi, InsaneCharlie.
Thanks for the question.  I see you have uninstalled iTunes and want this program back.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes if present and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.  If none of your data was modified in the iTunes media folder, then your data should be present upon installation.

  • System won't boot after accidentally deleting /private/var/folder

My Macbook Air is running OS 10.9 Mavericks, and I accidentally deleted the /var folder after seeing it taking lots of GB's from my storage.
Safari, Mail and a lot of applications f'ed up itself, like safari saying it couldn't connect to the folder.
I tried to put those folders back, and it gave me an Unauthorized Caller alert. I tried doing it again, and the folders froze, but I can still move my mouse. I restarted my computer by holding power 7 seconds, and tried to restart.
Somehow, I saw the grey Apple logo startup screen, heard that startup chime, and 10 seconds later, it shut down. I tried doing it again many times, but to no avail.

So here's my problem. I'm using intel iMac and yesterday my Mac didn't boot( grey screen etc). I thought that it was because I used force shutdown. I used (option-cmd-r-p) to reset and after that, Mac booted up into some kind of "first time startup screen"... So I used installation DVD and restored my previous backup of the system by using the TM. After that the Mac booted and now all I get is folder with a question mark? Now what....?
your profile suggests that you are running Tiger. if that is so, you shouldn't even be able to use time machine (introduced with Leo).
    can you please clarify ...

  • I accidentally deleted my windows 8 partition.

    Hi.
As the title states, i accidentally deleted and reformatted the partition that windows 8 was installed on, on my EliteBook 8570p, and now the recovery tool states that it is unable to restore because of a said missing partition. I was wondering if there was any way i could restore or format back the partition in question.
    Many Thanks.

I guess i should state that this happened during a botched install of windows 7. Right now, i just want to see if i can restore windows 8 in it's original setting to this computer.
