Accidentally deleted several FCP Projects

I'm using FCP X 10.1.1. I've been making simple (uncomplicated) videos and have used a lot of space on my HD. I'm new to the program and I inadvertenly deleted 4 large projects in my FCP library bc I was looking for more disc space. I realized my error and dragged it back into documents and now I'm really confused as to what to do. It is over over 800GBs I need the disc space but don't want to lose the projects,...one in particular.
If one deletes a FCP project so that it's in the Mac's trash - how do you recover it properly? For example how would you recover a specific deleted FCP project from Time Machine. Does FCP do it's own backup. Below is what I deleted and then dragged back:
"Macintosh HD's projects and events.fcpbundle"
Thanks for any help...

Hi HFGU
That fcpbundle is the complete FCPX library. If you "put it back" from trash, you should then  be able to open it via File>Open Library ?
If its not in the "top list" of Libraries, you may need to navigate to it via the "Other" option on that list.

  • FCS is only deleting my FCP project file and not linked assets. please help.

When deleting a FCP project from FCS it does not give me the option to delete all linked media. It only deletes the FCP project file leaving me to delete all related media manually. In the user guide it says it should give me the option to delete the project and all files automatically but this doesn't happen on our system. Does anyone know why? and how to turn this function on?

A bug that will never be fixed.  You have to delete the associated assets manually.

  • How to create a DVD from several FCP projects?

I'm strugeling to create a DVD. I feel like a fool because it used to go so easy with my old computer but with my new Mac it doesn't seem to work.....
    What I'm doing:
    - Footage MTS 1920x1080, 24Mbps .MOD files
    - I upload them from my camera into FCP
    - I make projects (let say 20 different ones)
    - I want to put all the projects on 1 DVD as seperate 'chapters/ icons'
    - With FCP I can only put one project at the time on a DVD, so that doesn't work
    - I bought DVD creater to put the exports of FCP on a DVD, problem I can not create a export out of FCP that will be recognised by dvd creater.
I know that I will be able to convert my FCP export into something else by some programme. But this is a work around, I don't really want to do such a extra step because the quality will be lower.
Ik hope someone has a solution for me!

    Hello T,
I have just exported the slideshow from iPhoto to the iPhoto Slideshow Folder, opening iDVD.
I selected create a new project as EJ3 in MoMs folder hit CREATE and iDVD quit, disappears,
THE iDVD icon is still active on the doc but how ever it is simply GONE,
this is the second time i tried this. I will restart the computer and come back and try it again.
OK. I restarted the Mac, opened iDVD, selected MAGIC iDVD and in the movie section EJ3 was no where to be found.
I will now close iDVD and try create a new project, saved MY GREAT DVD to the desktop.
Cannot find EJ3 or the other exported iPHOTO slide shows under Elizabeth.....
    they are here
but I can't select, or import, or open in iDVD.
I am totally lost and thinking that this can't be done for some unknown reason.
I am thinking if iMOVIE is the way to go OR if I should delete iDVD and reinstall it from the iLIFE disk.
I am sorry for all this failure.
    at a loss right now.

  • I accidentally deleted some essential system files

So, I accidentally deleted several directories from /usr...
I have a ton of data on that computer that I cannot loose and cannot back up
A bunch of packages like su, sudo, and even pacman are not there anymore
Hypothetically, if I were to run this machine in a chroot, could I run pacstrap and get all the packages again? Or, will I have to run it in a chroot and manually download each package?
Will either of these delete data from my computer? Will either of these even work?

Id like to offer a few recommendations to prevent this in the future.
First, I concur with everyone above- have a backup! It makes problems like these no big deal. A liveCD and rsync will have you back in business in no time.
Second, if you use BTRFS, snapshots are an awesome feature. You could literally rm -rf /etc and all youd have to do is boot a prior snapshot. (P.S. Dont do this for any reason, even if you know what youre doing. It will work, but dont). I have my rootfs in a subvolume, and I have a snapshots subvolume. I have a bash script that takes snapshots once a week (total of 3) and I update using my own script that integrates optional preupgrade snapshots (in case the latest upgrade causes breakage due to Arch's rolling nature), news feeds, etc. You might want to consider something like this..
Third, there is a cool utility called pakbak that could have saved you in this situation. It backs up your pacman databases whenever a database change happens. You could have restored pacman and your databases, then made sure everything was installed properly.
Good to see you got out without data loss. Ive lost data due to not having a backup and it sucks!
**EDIT** Link to pakbak in the AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/pakbak-git/

  • Accidentally deleted music?

I have accidentally deleted several CD's bought from iTunes and i was wondering "Can i get them back?" Somehow a few of my albums on my iPod touch have been removed and i can not find the files for them anywhere. Is it possible to somehow re-download them without repurchasing them?

The policy on music/media purchases is that you only get one download and it's up to you to maintain a backup against loss: iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on this link it'll take you to the support/contact page, from there click on Music Purchases then the Lost or Missing Items option, from there click on "Email Us": Customer Service - iTunes Store Support

  • Accidentally Deleted Project!

    Hi,
While deleting photos from a project, using the command-delete keyboard stroke, I accidentally clicked on a Project and sent it to the trash.
The photos are sitting there in the trash, unharmed, but there is no "undo" function for this action in Aperture.
Now, when I try to re-import the photos into Aperture, it says I need more disk space in my Aperture library to make room for the old photos. My import settings are set to "move" not "copy" the photos into my photos folder....
Any advice on how to get around this pickle would be much appreciated!
    Dave

If you have deleted the project, Aperture will import the entire project for you with all settings, see the import area of the file menu. You may need to move the project to another drive prior to importing though.
    *An advanced technique!*
Quit your backed up Aperture, right click the (backed up) library, show contents, you should now recognise the structure as representing projects and a variety of other areas of Aperture, have a look around *without touching anything*. Now move your project into the Aperture Package as per the other projects, now close that folder. Launch Aperture holding the option and command keys down, this presents you with a dialogue box giving you the options to perform a "consistency check" or "Rebuild Now", select Rebuild Now, this will have the application look at the folder structure and recognise the "new" project.
This is an advanced technique, do it properly it will be fine, but at your own risk. If unsure perhaps prove it for yourself on a test library.

You need to reinstall all of your Apps. That should replace all of the support files you nuked.

  • Keep accidentally deleting Entire Project...design Flaw??

At least 5-6 times I have in-advertantly deleted an entire project. This has happened when i thought i had the first picture in a project selected which i wanted to delete no realizing the individual picture was not actually selected but the entire project and then poofffttt, its gone, all edits, previews, everything. now I know it is not lost for good as it was in the trash BUT all must be reimported and redited! There is no undo or warning on such a time consuming unreversable action.
Has anyone experienced this or is there some other way to recover which is not as time consuming i am unaware of?

under preferences, there is a check box for, "Show warning when deleting masters" ... make sure it is checked and you will get the message as described ...

  • Sharing FCP projects between user accounts problem

    Hello!
I'm working on a project with several other colleagues. Each of us has his own User account on the computer (dual G5 / 10.4.7) because we have different preferecnes regarding keyboard layouts, desktop colour etc. We would like to have our FCP project files accessible to each of us.
I have tried different approaches to solve this task, but haven't fully succeded yet (I tried creating the project file within the /Users/Shared foler; putting it into a dedicated /Users/FCPProjects folder and applying chmod/chown commands; creating a Editors group with NetInfo and assigning those foders to this group; I even tried to work around this using ACLs).
The problem is that when we click "Save All" command in FCP, we get three or four OK-only dialog boxes in a row saying "Access denied". The project file is in fact saved (I can see it by checking the Modified time in Finder), but FCP seems not to be aware of this and doesn't want to quit. It's an unpleasent situation because it allways makes us worry about losing our work.
Could someone please give us instructions on the correct procedures for resolving the issue.
    Thank you
    Best regards
    Mato Ilijic

    matoid,
ACLs should work for you, and it seems that they are. You shouldn't have to deal with the error dialogue either, so let's see if we can't get rid of it.
First, let's talk about groups. I have looked at your "step by step," and I notice that you didn't bother to change the group ownership of the "shared" folder that you created. Fine, ACLs still work, but the group ownership of "wheel" might be the cause of your error messages. ACLs are a more advanced system of access controls than the older POSIX system, but POSIX still exists, and might affect your work.
Let's assume that you have your standard users that will be using FCP placed properly into a common group. For this discussion, I'll call that group "fcpusers." Under the POSIX paradigm, any "shared" folder can be owned by any one of the users in this group, but it must have a group ownership of "fcpusers" in order to work properly for everyone. When it does, every new file or folder created in it will "inherit" that group ownership.
Now, every user on a given machine will have read access to that shared folder. If a non-member of group "fcpusers" attempts to save a file there, however, an error message is likely to appear. One other possibility is that the file is saved, but with an "unknown" group ownership. This is because of a conflict between the groups the saving user is a member of and the attempted "inheritance" from the enclosing folder.
I want you to try the following. Please do this exactly as I outline it:
    1) Create a new group in Netinfo Manager. Duplicate the "admin" group. Change the name of the duplicate to "fcpusers," then delete the "realname," "generateduid," and "smb_sid" properties. Change the GID to "101." Select the "users" property, then choose Directory>Insert Value. Type the short name of one of your users. Repeat this procedure for every user of FCP. Select any admin users in this group who will not be using FCP, and click the "Delete" icon. Finally, choose Domain>Save Changes.
    2) Create a new folder in /Users/Shared. For this discussion we will assume that you will call it "FCP_Data." Further, we will assume that one of your FCP users is named "usera" (your terminology ;-)). Open Terminal. Since you seem to be well-versed in the use of Terminal, I will simply post the commands needed:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown usera:fcpusers /Users/Shared/FCP_Data
    sudo chmod g+w /Users/Shared/FCP_Data</pre>
    3) Before anyone begins saving files in this directory, make sure that their umask is changed using TinkerTool. Also, I recommend that all media gets saved here, too. I'm not sure how close FCP is to iMovie, if it doesn't save all data in a "package," but it is likely that media is being referenced using "placeholders." If this is the case, and media for a given project is scattered all over the file system, there could indeed be ownership issues. If media needs to be on externals, this same "shared" folder can be created there. Just make sure that #1, the volume has "ownership and permissions" in effect, and #2 all media is kept within the "shared" directory structure.
You must use TinkerTool to change the umask such that members of the group have read/write permission. TinkerTool doesn't specifically say this, but the corresponding umask is "002" (the OS X default is "022"). BTW, umask is subtracted from the "full permissions" value of "666" when saving non-executable files ("777" for folders and executables).
Once you have a properly configured "shared" folder and a proper umask in place, your users can begin to populate the shared directory. If any existing projects are to be added, they must be copied by a user into the shared directory, not simply moved. Only when a copy is made will the new copy inherit the proper group ownership. Just to be sure, I will include one more set of commands to use, once the shared directory has been populated:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R usera:fcpusers /Users/Shared/FCP_Data
    sudo chmod -R g+w /Users/Shared/FCP_Data</pre>
Please follow these instructions carefully, then report the results. This should work, and without using ACLs.

i have not set up time machine either but i do back up to a site called backupblaze...

    Step 1
    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
    Step 2
Restore from the last backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • I wonder how pro photographers use aperture?I shoot raw and my harddrive is alreay full.I'm not able to import new pictures. Is it ok if i create a vault and delete all my projects in the HD.Can I use an external HD use aperture through the vault??

I wonder how pro photographers use aperture?I shoot raw and my harddrive is alreay full.I'm not able to import new pictures. I don't know what to do. I created a vault. My plan was to create a vault(put all my master files into an external harddrive) and then delete all my projects in my mac pro's harddrive. Is it the correct way to do it ? What should I do if I have thousands of raw files ? How should my workflow be? Can I use an external HD and use aperture through the vault, without keeping the master files on my computer's hard drive?? Or should I shoot raw+jpeg and store raw files in an external backup harddrive and import only jpegs into my aperture library?

There's a bit to learn.  It will slowly make sense.
Aperture is an empty field.  You're given a tractor and a whole bunch of attachments. What you grow, how, and where, is entirely up to you.
Vaults are for back-up and only for back-up.  They have nothing to do with storing your working files.
When your Library outgrows your system drive (and for good performance, you should leave c. 20% of every drive empty), it's time to convert some of your image's Masters from Managed to Referenced.  ("Managed" and "Referenced" refer to Masters, not to Libraries.)
There are hundreds of posts in the forum, and several pages in the User Manual on using Masters.
Many people run Aperture with the Library on their system disk, and most (or all) of their images' Masters on external FW drives.  This is a good set-up.  Note that you will likely have to take steps to back-up the data on your external drives.
If you do the above, there should be no reason to delete any Projects.
The choice of RAW or RAW+JPEG or JPEG depends on the kind of work you are doing.  I capture RAW only -- but I don't do any commercial shoots.  Pros on deadlines report that the RAW+JPEG works well for them.  Capture JPEG if it saves you time.  IMHO, there is not a good reason to shoot JPEG to save space (space is cheap; time expensive).
Short-term solution: buy and use a FW800 external 1 TB drive, formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and using Aperture relocate the Masters of all images older than 30 days to that drive.  (Be sure to change your back-up strategy to include this new drive; you may need a second new drive.)
This general post of mine might help you understand more about Aperture.
