Accidentally messed up my desktop

OK i've done this before but forgot how to fix it......... When in my finder window I change the name of the user and it changed me to a different desktop. Anyone know how to revert back to my old desktop?
With my luck, I bet its something easy.

No, when in the finder window I changed the name of the user account (it had a Home icon next to it) then thats when it changed desktops on me when I logged out and back in. So now all my files/songs are gone.

What do you mean by loaded onto the Desktop? Are you referring to a changing desktop picture?
Or do you mean stop iPhoto from playing the slideshow full screen? Use the Escape key.

Hey, Adobe, don't mess with MY desktop!!

I installed Lightroom 4.1 today. I'm a Windows 7 user. It's MY desktop. The install messed with MY desktop in two ways:
1. It unpacked things to my desktop. While it was nice enough to delete the unpacked files when it was done, but if something had gone wrong there would be this cruft on MY desktop. Put the temporary files in %TEMP%. That's where they are supposed to go.
2. You created an icon on MY desktop without asking MY permission. If every product I ever installed put an icon on my desktop, I'd need two big monitors. Just ask. Thankfully, most products do. You didn't.

I kind of agree with you, but there are many, many more irritating things applications do. In this case, deleting a desktop icon or folder are fairly easy, as you can see them (and there's no risk in removing them).
What annoy me more are programs that
load a load of trash at boot-up to check for updates (they could equally well do that when they run, don't slow down my boot-up)
leave stuff in memory to speed the launch of a program (unless I run it very very often, I don't want that)
leave services running when the corresponding program isn't running (Apple, are you listening?)
set tasks to run at regular intervals just to check - who knows what
add extra toolbars to other programs (unless you uncheck easy-to-miss opt-outs when installing)
Bad examples here: Sun java (update checker), Google (update checker), Adobe Flash, Apple (stuff related to itunes, ipods, ipads etc left running 24/7), Nikon (update service). If you don't weed them out (with msconfig, autoruns or whatever) then you find boot-up takes extra minutes, and half a gig of memory is taken up with wholly idle software.

Certain websites require IE, and accidentally setting Firefox as my default browser has completely messed up my desktop shortcuts.

When I changed my default back to IE, the icons changed back, but everything still opens in Firefox... How can I get the shortcuts to open in IE? I've tried deleting the original shortcuts and creating new ones, but they still open in Firefox...

I'm not 100% sure I understand your problem. From what you've said, I think you're saying you've changed your default browser to Firefox, and the desktop icons all changed from the internet explorer icon (the blue e) to the firefox icon. You've changed the default browser back to IE, but the icons haven't changed back, and when you click on them they open in Firefox.
If that's the case, the problem is with your default browser setup. From what you've said, you've already set it in the browser similiar to [[How to make web links open in Firefox by default|the support article]]; for some reason Windows hasn't changed the default browser.
You could try (in Win 7) opening the control panel, then Programs ->Set Default Programs, and click on Internet Explorer in there, then "Set this Program as Default".

[solved] Dropbox messes up the desktop

Hi,
I'd like to install dropbox and see what it works. So I dowloaded and installed it from AUR. On running it tries to start nautilus; however I always run nautilus with the command "nautilus --no-desktop --browser" because I run fluxbox. I want dropbox to issue this command as well. It does not do this now, and the result is that there are icons that on the screen, the background image is changed, and the fluxbox menu is inaccessible.
Any ideas how to change this?

I installed dropbox with yaourt; apparently the dropbox-nautilus-app comes with it?
I run fluxbox, and I start dropbox by issuing the command.
Anyway, when I run dropbox or dropboxd, the program starts in "icon mode" in the taskbar; when I click on the item, then the strange behavior starts (nautilus is started with the wrong command, icons appear on the desktop, the fluxboxmenu is inaccessible, and the background image changes).

Setting app restrictions messes with the desktop?

i am running a 10.5.6 server in a 10.5.7 client computer lab environment. i am trying to restrict students from launching their own apps (many seem to want to torrent in the labs...). when i set group restrictions to only allow apps in specific directories, it seems to prevent DMG images from mounting successfully, prevents users from opening ZIP archives, and prevents them from moving icons around on the desktop. is there something i'm doing wrong, or is there a way around this?
i am allowing apps in only the following directories:
/system
/library
/applications
/developer
disallowing in:
~/

Add any mounted sharepoints to prevent applications from launching there. Also, why do you have the /Library, /Developer, and /System directories listed for application launching?

OS X upgrade to Lion & iCloud has completely messed up my desktop and macbook?

Recently upgraded to OS X 10.7.2 on both my desktop Mac and my Macbook in order to activate iCloud. MobileMe is somehow screwing things up! All of my contacts in my address book reverted back to an older version losing my new cleaned up contact list and duplicating every single contact entry as well as every single event in my iCal calendar! Outgoing mail won't work properly either stating that my email server is not recognizing my user name and password. Also have tons of POSTMASTER undeliverable mail emails in my inbox that are to people/addresses I don't know? Why is my computer generating emails? Have I got a virus that was installed with the upgrade? I'm so ****** and irritated. Should've all gone seamlessly as I did everything status quo. Can anyone out there help me or relate?????

Aperture messing up Systemprefs "Desktop Image" in Leopard

hi all,
i did a clean install from mac os x 10.5 leopard. since i installed aperture, updated it to v1.5.6, i can´t choose my own desktop images from system preferences. my own folders disappeared. if want to add them again, system prefreferences is telling me, that they are in the library already.
the problem is reproducible. 2 other imacs here having the same issue.

I am experiencing the same issue. in system preferences I can choose any photo from iPhoto but aperture shows nothing. I can see all of my Aperture project names but no photos. My problem extends to the iwork apps too. When I choose the inspector I can choose anything form iPhoto but Aperture only shows up as blank grey squares.

Nope, but then I didn't have any folders before. I just added one to test your theory. Showed up fine.
PS. Maybe try and delete the com.apple.desktop.plist preference file?

I accidentally deleted my Recent Buddies list...now iChat is messed up

I accidentally messed up iChat by deleting the recent buddies tab. How do I restore the list? I can't see anymore of the recent people I IM now.

Ouch,
It may be recoverable.
With the Buddy List open use the + sign at the Bottom.
Select the Add Group.
Add "Recent Buddies"
If you had a message to say deleting the Group would delete the Buddies you my have lost them.
Also try turning the Groups off in the View menu and see if they are still in the list anyway.

Trouble styling across device views ( Mobile, Tablet, Desktop) in fluid grid layout.

I’m having a problem in Dreamweaver CC laying out and styling my website using the fluid grid layout. For the record, I have not touched the boilerplate.css or JS file and have been using my own.css file to place all my .css in. I’ve managed to get some of the content in little by little but it looks nothing like my mock up. Since I’m new to Dreamweaver and coding in general, I’ve been starting my design in the desktop view. However, when I switch to tablet or mobile view and move something around, it completely moves it when I got back to the desktop view. Also, when I put in on live view or view it in a browser, I get two different looks all together. I try to make sure that my .css file is selected and under media I tried selecting the predefined media sizes and then under selector, there is usually 3 of each tag (one for each view I’m guessing), I select the tag associated with that view and change the properties from there. That hasn’t worked because when I go to live view or view in the browser, it looks completely off or it will screw with the other views. L
So here are my specific questions:
How do I style my elements specifically in each view WITHOUT messing up the desktop, or the other views? Simply clicking on a view using the icons on the bottom and styling has not worked.
Why is my live view so different from my browser view? I’m using the presets given in Dreamweaver for the desktop. When I view, say the logo and navigation in live view, everything is aligned but when I switch to my browser (chrome) it’s all crooked.
Should I be using % throughout all my properties (width, height, margin, padding, positioning)? Currently I have most of my div sized using % but some margins and other properties using px. Will that affect anything?
Can someone recommend a good tutorial? Everything that I seen either covers the basics that I already know,( adding/moving divs, switch views) but when it comes to the .css styling, they are adding a style sheet from somewhere without showing you how to do it from scratch.
Should I design the page in a non- fixed layout and then import the .css style sheet from there? If so, how do I do that without messing with the boilerplate.css file.
I’m taking a course in graphic and web design and we went over this very quickly and was given a lot of the material, however our final project (a full website with 5 pages) must be responsive and built in Dreamweaver. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

How do I restore an application icon to my desktop on my iPhone 4S?

I downloaded an app and it was accidentally deleted from my desktop. Now the only way to open the app is through the App Store under purchased apps. I can't figure out how to get it back onto the desktop.

You can reload the app by going to the Appstore, searching for the App and then re-download it by clicking the Cloud icon. The app will appear on your home screen in the next available slot. You can then move it wherever it was originally.

My Mozilla toolbar was messed up and I managed to get it back how I like it and shut it down. When I used my PC the next day ALL my years of bookmarks are gone!

I accidentally messed up how my Mozilla toolbar looks. After hours of searching on how to put it back I did what the help tab said.
I continued to use my PC the rest of the day with no issues, especially my bookmarks. I turned the PC off for the night and when I turned it on the next day ALL of my years of bookmarks were gone. I have zero PC savvy and my PC terminology is limited. I literally had years of bookmarks in my folders some I cannot remember where I found them. Can I retrieve them at all? If so, how using basic English and pictures?

Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.
*"3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars

*Right-click empty toolbar area
*check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
*if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
*if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar

Messed up with my 'Macintosh HD' Sharing & Permission

Hi there, it will sooo highly appreciated if someone could REALLY help me one this one. I accidentally messed up my setting in my HDD. I went to my HDD and right click then I went to Get Info > Sharing & Pemission > Everyone > No Access (Originally was Read & Write). Now I can't boot in to my computer. Yeah, it is a silly mistakes but I'm still considered NEW to Mac.

I believe you can Boot into the Recovery Disk, from the Diskutility you can reset the Permessions. Hope this helps a bit

Desktop Icon gone from Dock, How do I get it back?

I accidentally removed my "view desktop" icon from the dock. I can't seem to find where/how I can replace the view desktop icon back into my dock. Please help. Thanks.

If you mean the Dashboard icon. It would be in your Applications folder, just drag it to the Dock. Is this the one you're talking about? Because the Finder icon can't be accidentally removed from the Dock and there is no "Desktop" icon on your Dock.
There is a Desktop on the Sidebar of your Finder window and you could accidentally delete that. If that's the case go to your Home folder and drag it back to the Sidebar. Or go to Finder menu >> Preferences >> Sidebar and check mark it.
