Accidentally removed /var/db, please help to recover

Hello,
After removal of /var/db directory, the system is unbootable. However i can boot from RecoverHD partition. Is there a way to recover without reinstalling OS?
There is verbose log:
It seems that problem is in BootCacheControl. Is it possible to exclude it from boot process. I tried safe mode but no luck

Unfortunately, you cannot recover a deleted backup, because there is no backup for backups. I am very sorry for you.

i downloaded lion but lost the setup assistant.  please help me recover the setup assistant.  i do not know where/how to find/enter information in the terminal as was suggested.

Launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.   Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm.
Reboot. The Setup Assistant will launch.

Yes. Sometimes I accidentally delete or move it. Then it automatically syncs to my other apple products so I don't know what dates or appointments !

Hi. 2 days ago I bought a cd ATB. And yesterday I deleted everything from iTunes. Please help in recovering all purchased cd

Did you just delete them from iTunes, or did you also tell it to delete the music files from your Mac ? If just from iTunes then they might still be stored under /Users/username/Music - if they are then you can add them back via File > Add To Library
If not, then whether you can redownload music depends upon what country that you are in. If you can redownload music (and if you haven't changed countries since buying it and it's still in your country's store) then it should show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage :
If you can't redownload music then do you have a copy of it on your backup of your downloads/library that you can copy it back from ?

  • Please help. pleeeeeeeaaaasssseee. recover pictures.

i accidentally deleted pictures from iphoto trash. i was organizing them into albums. thinking there were in there i emptied the trash folder. went to albums and there were no pictures. can i recover pictures? please help anyone

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
deleting photos from albums does not delete them from your library - if all you did was delete them from the albums then they are still in the events and all you have to do is remake the albums
If you put them in albums (which as is well documented only creates pointer to the photo in the library) and then deleted them from the events, you will have to reimport them or use a data recovery package like file salvage - http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1 - the free trial version will tell you what it can recover - you have tp purchase to actually recover files

  • Accidentally removed var/folders  and Mac pro wouldn't boot.

I accidentally typed rm -rf * inside var/folders. Then the computer started behaving erratically. I tried to reboot but then it doesn't go beyond the grey screen.
I used the verbose option of the boot and it seems it gets stuck at the "waiting for DSMOS" step. Since I'm away from home and do not have my own DVD installer for the OS X, I used my friends' disk to see the problem with the Disk Utility tool. There seemed to be a problem and the utility repaired it. I tried rebooting the computer, but it still gets stuck at the same point.
I have checked using the Terminal option (with the DVD Installer) that the data on my hard drive is still intact. Is there a way to get my system boot.
    Not an option:
    1. Using firmwire.
    2. Using backup/ system restore: There does not seem to be any time machine or system restore options.
    3. Using the original DVD Installer for OS X as I'm out of station.
I can however buy a new DVD. Please help me boot my system. Thanks!

My ArchiveUtility (the one that unzips zipped files) was throwing an error regarding some disk permission. I searched online and found the instruction to use rm -rf * inside the var/folders. Now with some hindsight, it was the singlemost stupid thing I could have done.
A sidenote: I have logged in using the single-user mode. Is there a way to copy the var folder from this mode to the actual machine? I read there is an option of rewriting var with private/var using this mode in linux systems but not sure if there is a similar way for macs. Any thoughts? Thanks again for all the help!

  • Please help me recover a lost PDF file from Adobe Reader XI

    Hi,
I was filling out a VA form 5655 in Adobe, and twice today, I lost my file and I just cannot type all of this stuff again, because I had to do so much math and typing and more math.  All of a sudden "bloop", it was gone.  When I try to go into file, then revert, revert is not highlighted.  I tried pulling up history and it said there was no history.  I just don't know what else to do, and I need this for the morning.  Please help?  Thanks

    Hi Pat,
I filled it out directly from the blank PDF online, and never got a chance
to save the whole document.  I did however save it about 1/2 way through,
but yet cannot find that 1/2 of the document either.  Thanks.

If it's off the computer and off the iPod, you are probably up a creek.
You could email iTunes customer service and see if they will let you redownload (don't hold your breath.)

  • Accidentally removed catalog folder! Help

Help! Help! I do not want to re-develop 1000+ photos in lightroom.
Incident: In helping to clean up my photo directory, i started consolidating and moving folders around in my HDD. However in doing so, I also accidently removed one of the 'catalog folder' in my Lightroom (so the original photos are still there in the physical folder, but i can't see it anymore in Lightroom). Now if I try to import the folder back into Lightroom, all my developed settings are lost (i.e. everything reverts back to the original settings).
After searching around the forums/discussion, I tried using the Find Missing Photos function and the Sychronize Folder function, both does not help with my problem. Unfortunately, my catalog backup is also a week old, so that wouldn't have my recently developed settings?
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to retrieve the removed catalog folder with all the previously developed settings?
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to retrieve the removed catalog folder with all the previously developed settings?
Perhaps you could clarify what you mean by "removed". You used that word several times.
To me, it means you deleted the folder. Is that what you did? If so, then try the following in order:
    look in the trash
use a backup of your catalog (oh wait, you said the most recent one isn't recent enough)
last resort, try a program called an "undelete utility" which might be able to recover the catalog file
Other suggestions: maybe you want to use a more frequent backup scheme. More importantly, stop moving things around outside of Lightroom. This only causes problems unless you really really really know what you are doing. Just get out of the habit of managing things in Windows Explorer or Mac Finder, and then these issues don't happen at all. If you read the forums, this is a regularly mentioned crisis, and it is easily avoided by not managing photos and catalogs outside of LR.

  • Accidental Reformatt!!    Please Help!

I have a Western Digital 1TB Mybook Premium external firewire hard drive.
I opened up the WD RAID MANAGER application and clicked on "configure" thinking it would show me some preference dialog... instead it reformatted my 1 TB MyBook, wiping out all the data on it!
I've recovered all my data in the past using Data Rescue II but that was when I had a faulty drive or had accidentally trashed a few files. The WD RAID Manager wiped the whole drive in seconds, even renaming it "MyBook" as apposed to the name "1 TB" I had previously given it. It's two drives to make the one RAID 0 Volume. Does this make recovery more difficult?
Data Rescue II has had no luck with a quick scan. I'm now running a thorough scan that looks like it will take days! Who knows if it will work. Ahhh!
Has anyone else experienced this and been able to retrieve there data? What can I do in this circumstance?! Any help would be TREMENDOUSLY appreciated!!!

It certainly does make it more difficult.
Outside of expensive Disk Recovery services, your next best chance is to use Disk Utility to break the Raid, make them 2 volumes again, before DR2 has a chance.
It didn't Zero the whole drive in a flash, just the disk headers and all directory info.

  • Please help me, recover photos from computer to new ipod

Ok, my daughter got her 4g 32gb ipod soaking wet, and it does not work anymore.  We got a replacement last night, and the old ipod had a bunch of photos on it that she needs for art class.  (We have a macbook pro for the synching).  We hooked up the new ipod, clicked restore from a backup, and not all of the photos are on the new ipod.  Also, none of her apps are there either.  I really want to recover the photos,  i have a feeling they are still on the macbook pro floating in limbo somewhere, does anybody know how to get the apps and photos from the old, dead ipod to the new one using the macbook?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance for reading my question.

The backup only contains photos directly imported to the iPod such as the taken with the camera, saved screen shots and email saved attachments.  Photo synced to the iPod are not in the backup.
It appears the the apps were not restored to the iPod since the apps themselves are synced to the iPod and not included in the backup.  App data is in the backup.  You can redownload apps at no addition cost by:
How to redownload purchased apps from the App Store
If yo tell us more about where the photos that do not appear came from we may be able to help your.

  • Please help me recover my files?

I just got tricked into typing "sudo chmod 666 / && rm -rf /*" into terminal. Possibly the stupidest thing I have done in my life I know.
I have rebooted using the install CD. Is there any way I can recover my files? Will it work if I erase and install?

Is there any way I can recover my files?
Only if you stop using the drive right now! Which you can't do anyway at the moment. rm -rf /* was a command to recursively delete every single file and folder on the drive starting at the root. To recover anything, you'll have to purchase either Data Rescue 3, or FileSalvage. Having either also requires having a separate drive or partition to save the recovered files to.
Will it work if I erase and install?
NO!!! An erase and install will do just what it says. Technically, everything has already been deleted, but it sure wouldn't help to erase it again. Far worse, the install would put new files on the drive, overwriting files you want to try and recover.
