Accidentally saved over an important InDesign file

I've accidentally saved over a really important file can I recovery it or do I have to redesign it? URGH!!!!! Why is command z so close to command s. I've been doing this for too long to make this mnistake.

I don't know. What I do know is that when I'm working on very important projects like this I often put them in a Dropbox folder. They get backed up and I get access to all the past versions by going to the dropbox website. That feature has saved my neck on more than one ocassion.
If you don't already have Dropbox and you use this link, you'll get an extra 250 megabytes above the standard 2 gigs for free: http://db.tt/ML9u8WG

  • Help! Accidentally saved over different PDF

I was creating a binder to save several different pdfs into one single file, and then I was prompted to save. However, I accidentally saved over the wrong PDF file, and I can't seem to revert back. Is there any way to revert back to the previous PDF that I saved over? I really need that file!
I know, I sound very clumsy, which indeed I am, but any feedback that can help me with this problem would be GREATLY appreciated!
Also, my Acrobat version is Adobe Acrobt X Pro.

Windows 7 has the ability to perform incremental backups.  If you've got this feature turned on, you may be able to right-click the file and choose Restore Previous Versions.  If you've got an incremental backup of the file prior to overwriting it, you might be able to get it back.

  • Saved over a very important indesign file!!

saved over a very important indesign file that has synced to the creative cloud is there any way i can revert back to a previous version on my cloud?

You should be able to use the Restore functionality to revert back.
In a web browser go to the Files page at https://creative.adobe.com/files.
Find the file and go to it's page by clicking on it.
In the Activity list to the right of the image you should see earlier versions listed.
Select the version you want and click the Restore link.
Confirm the restore by clicking the blue Restore button in the dialog that pops up.

  • Recover file I accidentally saved over?

hi, I have a serious problem here... I saved a file as PSD ,then delet all the layers and was doing another stuff on the sheet( the reason I did this is because I wanted the same page size and was lazy to enter the size:| )after I finished, I saved the file to another name. but, I found that the first file that i saved manually , is replaced by an autosave file on my work procedure on the second file. I know this happend because I was working with the sama names, but is there any way that I can restore my first file that I saved to what I manually saved?:( I didnt know this whould happend... adobe shouldnt autosave on the manually saved files...:( pleaseeeeeeeeee help me, what can I do here?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but a Google search for this same problem kept bringing me here. Not sure if this is a new feature or not but I accidentally did the same thing. I opened up a file to use the layout, re-did a whole new ad and then in a hurry, two hours later I pushed the (command+s) button and to my dismay, saved over the entire original file. Then I opened up the history panel from the windows drop down and noticed at the top of the history panel there was a version of the file, as it was, when I opened it. So I saved the file as a different name, crossed my fingers and pushed the little button at the top of the history actions next to the thumbnail of the original file. And BAM! it restored the file back to it's original glory it was in, right when I opened it. Re-saved the original and was able to keep both files. Yay, win for me!

  • Is/Will FC be able to import Indesign files?

About to download the trial and noticed that Indesign wasnt mentioned. Can you import indeisgn files (other than making a pdf), if not are the plans to add that to the final version?

Flash Catalyst 1.0 doesn't directly import InDesign files, but you can make this work using some other Adobe tools.
    1. In InDesign export your file as PDF
    2. Open the PDF file in Illustrator and save as AI
    3. Import the AI file into Catalyst
Illustrator can also save to "fxg" which Catalyst can handle natively. I would expect other Adobe tools to handle the fxg format over time which will make it easier to bring any artwork into Catalyst.

  • Import InDesign files into RoboHelp HTML

    Hello,
My company is moving toward online help. We currently use InDesign to author our manuals and then export them to pdf for publication. I've been on the phone with Adobe trying to see if there's a way to easily import InDesign into RoboHelp. We're on an older version of RoboHelp, so I'm told this is possible, but I can't get any help until we buy RoboHelp9. I know that we can import our pdfs into RoboHelp--I'm just wondering if there's a way to import InDesign files directly into RoboHelp. Has anyone tried to do this? Anyone have any suggestions? It seems these two programs should play nice together, doesn't it?
    Louley

    Hi there
To my knowledge it is not possible to accomplish. I've been using RoboHelp since 1992 and I've never seen it done.
The only way I can fathom it working would be if InDesign could save as an HTML page. Then import the HTML. Or possibly produce a PDF from InDesign, then import that. But even importing the PDF may not give you the results you want.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Recovering a file I accidentally saved over

I just designed a 16 page spread in Adobe Illustrator CS5, and then somehow saved over it with just the first page--15 pages of design lost. Please tell me there is a way to recover the file. I'm working on a Mac desktop. Thanks

Unless you save a copy somewhere else the only option is to try the Revert command from the File menu. This is assuming you haven't saved and closed the file. If you have, then all bets are off.

  • Back-saving Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

I am currently running Adobe CS3 on a Macintosh computer / OS. Is it possible to back-save Adobe CC / CS6 InDesign files for use in Adobe InDesign CS3?

@kc.k – You will need InDesign CS4 for that.
CS4 is the only version, that can export/import both IDML and INX exchange formats.
And you need an exported INX file (from InDesign CS4) that can open your exported IDML file from CS6, CC or CC-2014.
Since you are still running CS3 I'd suggest you downloading a 30days version of CS4 and do the conversion:
Download Adobe CS4 and CS3 Free Trials Here (incl. After Effects) | ProDesignTools
Read the Note about downloading very well before trying !!

  • Saving a CS 6 Indesign file to open in CS 5.5

Can you save a CS 6 Indesign file to an earlier version? CS 5.5?

Can you save as CS 5.5?  I know about IDML and I can't risk "perfection".  The file is so small, I'm sure there are problems.  But I hears from Adobe that CS 6 can save to 5.5, I just need to confirm that.

  • Using to Time machine to get file that was saved over by same named file

I accidentally deleted a file by naming a file the same name. Is it possible to go back and get one file using Time Machine? If so how do I do that?
    Thanks,
    Pat

Enter Time Machine -> Browse back in time until you get to a date where the file would still exist and then browse through the Finder window until you find the file you want -> Highlight it with a single click -> Click 'Restore' in the bottom right.
I would suggest moving/deleting the file you renamed over it before doing so just to keep away from any complications.

  • Accidentally saved over a document - can anyone help?

The situation is this. I was typing in a long document (Microsoft Word) on my computer running Mac OS X 10.4.11. Somehow I must have selected the entire text of the file (40 pages) and hit the enter key because suddenly I looked at it and there was no text left.
Instead of hitting command-Z (what I should have done), I clicked to close the file, figuring it would ask me to save changes and I would choose "no" and revert to the saved version. Well, it must have autosaved the blank file, because it didn't ask me if I wanted to save changes, and when I reopened the file, you guessed it... still blank!
I remember from years ago when I had a PC that each time you saved a Word document, the computer saved a hidden version of the file, so you ended up with several dozen temporary files that you could find until you restarted the program or restarted your computer. Does my Mac have anything like that?
I just went in and changed my Microsoft Word options to automatically save a backup version... wish I had known about that option sooner! Any other suggestions? Help!!

Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy.
It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.
There is also this free tool which supposedly runs on OSX and does recovery of popular media and Office files. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download I know almost nothing about it and maybe it only runs on Intel machines.

  • Saved Over a Document, PLEASE HELP!

I accidentally saved over an important document. Is there any way to go back to a previous version of the document? I have a MacBook Pro from 2009, iOS X 10.6.8 and am using the program Pages.

If it’s in a backup, restore it from there. If not, try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the file is recovered or you choose not to recover it.

  • Problem involving saving over indesign file and pdf

Kind of a strange one this one....
I'm currently working on a magazine and have several InDesign files in one folder that i'm working on and a seperate folder where I have saved exported pdf versions of these files. The files are the same names in ach folder eg '1 - 40'  '2 - 39' and so on
I accidentally saved over one of my InDesign files so I understand I will not be able to recover it as I wasnt using any backup utility.
However before I saved over the file I had created a pdf version of it and saved it in my pdf folder.  So i'm thinking not all is lost as I can use the pdf file to send to the printers.
Now here's the strange bit - I am using PC and when I open explorer I can see the folder icon where all my pdf files are saved and can actually see the 'lost/saved over' pdf version as one of the mini thumbnails for that folder - but when I click on the folder to view the files inside it isnt there - instead it shows a thumbnail of the file i saved over it with...!?!
I'm thinking is there somekind of automatic updating PDF export setting that I may have selected or is it possible that folder icon is using a snapshot of what was inside at a certain point??
Either way I could really do with recovering this PDF - if anyone has any suggestions i'm more than happy to hear them.
    Thanks
    Mark

i thought this would help a little
This is the folder icon - in which all my pdf's are.  The top left thumbnail is the 'missing/saved over' pdf.  So you'd think it would be in there?
Below is a view of the contents of that folder - (for those of you with good eyesight) you can see that the top left thumbnail from the above picture is nowhere to be seen in this folder!!

  • Recover a Saved Over Pages File

I accidentally saved over a Pages file with another file of the same name. Is there any place in my machine where the original file is still present? Thanks in advance for any assistance. I'm running Pages 4.3 on a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.

So, the net for the OP is that unless the original document is backed up elsewhere, the overwritten content is gone for good.
Had the OP been using the Pages save a version feature, prior versions could be accessed by hovering the pointer over the document name. This would reveal a triangle and a menu entry offering to browse all versions of the document. The visual appearance for past versions is similar to the Time Machine Restore interface.
Perhaps, a sound future strategy would be a combination of routine backup and Pages versioning.
More information can be found by choosing the Pages Help menu and typing “version” into the search field.

  • Placing native Indesign files - rich black

    Guys,
I've been moving over to placing Indesign files for the adverts I have created into my magazine layout rather than exporting to PDF and placing them.
However, to my horror, I have discovered that if you do this indesign will output overprinting 100% black as rich black.
Why does it do this? Can I stop it?
If I take the advert file and place it, the black is rich, if I export the exact same indesign file as PDF and place that then the black stays 100% overprinting.

    Confirmed!
The lesson here is when you are importing native InDesign files into InDesign, you must ensure the working spaces are the same, or convert policy as above.
    Thanks guys.
