Accidentally sliced up the timeline

I'm new to FCE 4, and I was importing still images into the timeline when I suddenly noticed that all the audio and visual tracks had been sliced from top to bottom into four different sections and moved apart from each other.
I must have inadvertently hit some key but I have absolutely no idea what I might have done to cause this. It was as if I had cut it so that all the video and audio tracks were split from the same point and then dragged away from each other. Image stills and audio were cut, with one sliver on one side and then the remaining image / audio on the other, a few seconds later along the timeline.
At first I thought it was just because my screen needed to be refreshed, but when I opened up the document again, it was still there.
Can anyone tell me what might have caused this? I would really like to avoid that happening again.

Sounds like you may have performed an INSERT edit when you needed to perform an OVERWRITE edit.

  • I accidentally eliminated my "Linked Selection" button over the timeline. How do I get it back?

I accidentally eliminated my "Linked Selection" button over the timeline. How do I get it back?

I'm finding it difficult to understand what you eliminated.  Are you saying you no longer see your clips at the upper left of the screen ... the ones you placed in the timeline?  Or are you saying you see the clips from the events but not the event names on the left most border of the upper left of the screen?  There is a little arrow that points to the left with a bar to the left of it midway down the left border of the screen.  Clicking on this little arrow hides or reveals the event names you have. (see below). Can you give us a little more info?  Best wishes.

  • Can the timeline be locked to prevent accidental edit slips ?

Just wondering what the procedure in Speedgrade is to lock the timeline to prevent accidental frame and edit slips while selecting footage and grading?

To the left of the timeloine with the eye and sound icon, you'll find a lock icon. This appears to lock position/sync while still allowing you to select clips to grade.

  • Something happened, now I can't select clips in the timeline of my current project(in Elements 4)

I've been working on a project for a few days now, everything's been fine. Last night while editing, something happened when I was trying to add a transition between two clips. Now I can't select or edit any clips in the timeline anymore, and can't add new ones. When I click on the clips in the timeline, nothing happens. When I try to drag the select box around several of them, same thing. It acts like there's nothing to select. Same thing with right clicks, soundtrack mp3s, etc. The clips ARE still THERE though, and they all play fine in the preview screen in real time, and when I drag the slider back and forth along them.
All the clips are already rendered except the one transition I was adding when this started. When I hit 'Enter' to render, though, it says "Rendering 1 of 6 Audio Previews" instead of the usual x-number of video previews. I've not seen that before so it probably has something to do with all this.
It's ONLY with this one project. I can still edit and select clips in all my other projects as before.
I've already tried loading other projects and then coming back to this one, as well as closing the program and re-opening it. My current project is still stuck like this but the others are fine.
Please keep all this info in mind. This can't have anything to do with codecs or the clips being in the wrong format for the program. They're all regular AVI files and MP3s, I've been selecting and editing every single clip on this timeline dozens of times over the past few days with no problems. I'm just suddenly not able to select or edit them anymore or add anything new to the timeline, but they still play normally as previews.
I'm really hoping this is a simple thing where I've just tripped some setting and accidentally saved it that way and it can be easily changed back.

OK, then all that I suggested here:
Now, Exit from PrE, and Shutdown the computer completely. Wait a few moments, and then do a cold boot, launching PrE and Opening that Save_As Project. Do you now have the ability to edit the Clips on the Timeline?
If not, go to the location where you Copied the AutoSave folder, and view the files with Detail View ON. Then, look at the Date/Time of the files (probably will be 5 of them). Choose the last one written, Open that, and test. If no change, work backwards to the oldest.
If nothing is working, the only thing that comes to my mind would be an issue with the display driver, BUT that should affect all Projects, and not just this one. However, updating the video driver is always a good step, and should not hurt anything.
Note: many MP3's can cause all sorts of problems. I recommend always converting them to PCM/WAV @ 48KHz 16-bit, and replacing MP3's with those WAV files. One can use the great, free audio-editor, Audacity, to convert the MP3's.
If all of the above tests fail, let us know, and if you get any error, or warning messages, copy those down completely, and post those
    all failed too?
If so, there is nothing that I can suggest. It seems that your Project is hosed, and is very likely not recoverable.
    Sorry,
    Hunt

  • Video clip images have disappeared in the timeline

Hi - I was working away on an event in FCPX when I noticed that the timeline no longer showed any of the clip images - just the sound waveforms.  The video is visible on the canvas, and can be edited, but there is just a segmented blue nothing where the clip images used to be.  This is a new one - anyone experienced this before, or have an idea what's causing it?
    Thanks!

Thank you very much, Tom, for your very clear reply!  It worked using the Option-Command reset of preferences.  Interestingly, when I clicked on Close to shut down FCPX, this is what popped up. I have no idea what "background tasks" were being undertaken.  Although the app disappeared from the screen, it remained live in the dock and had to be force quit.  Do you think it's possible that some not-deliberately-invoked process removed the clip images, and if so, what it might be?  I can trip on a bare floor, but don't usually send an app off accidentally!

  • First time Final Cut beginner question- how to get the timeline back?

The first time I opened Final Cut on my own, I accidentally closed the timeline box. How do I get it back?
    ~Krista

Hmm...that's strange. Try this: From the FCE menu bar, select Window>Arrange>Standard
If that doesn't do the trick, your FCE Preferences may have gotten corrupted. Trash them exactly as described here:

  • Locking a swatch of clips in the timeline?

    Hi everybody. Here's the situation:
I'm working on a sequence that's 30 minutes long. The second half is more or less done. It's got several video tracks and 6-8 audio tracks. Is there a way to lock THIS WHOLE PART of the timeline? I'm worried that while editing the first half, I will make changes that will set off disturbances in parts that are done (specifically, throwing audio/video out of sync).
If not, I'd be curious to know how other editors deal with working in a timeline with both unifinished and semi-finished sections.

Agree on nesting. (especially when exporting to OMF is involved).
    So #3 would be:
make a backup of this sequence.
    re-edit the first part.
IF you accidentally 'damaged' the sync in part 2: delete the second part. Then copy the second part from your backup-sequence and paste it into your current sequence...
ELSE: You're not as clumsy as you thought you were.

  • Unable to resize and reposition clip once added to the timeline.

Hi.  I used to be able to reposition and resize in the yellow box area (I don't know the name of that area) after I dropped the clip on the timeline.  I accidentally did something and now I can't resize or reposition my video or images.  Does anyone know how I can fix this?

You should just be able to double click on the clip in the program monitor and get an outline that indicates you can move the clip around. If that's not working for some reason, double click the clip on the timeline to load it into the source monitor, then go to the 'effects' tab and use the motion settings to reposition the clip. Make sure to twirl down the small arrow next to the motion settings to get more options.
Also, if you click on the small box to the left of the word 'motion', it should bring up your familiar bounding box in the Program monitor.

  • Anyone having problems with art/animation/audio disappearing from the timeline after a save?

    Hello,
I'm having problems with many files losing their assets from the timeline after a save and reopening the file in Mac OS X Snow Leopard. This is happens quite often now and there seems to be no pattern to it. For example, I will open an existing Flash animation complete with sound and artwork, make changes to the animation timing, test the SWF and everything looks good, then save. After reopening the exact same file, there will be audio that was on the timeline will be an empty frame. In addition, there is art work that was swapped out or updated to a character and the symbols becomes empty after reopening. I'm losing days and hours of work and I can't seem to find any answers or help to figure out what's going on.
    Any insight would be appreciated!
    thanks!

I now use CS5.5 but I've noticed it on every version since CS4.
I JUST ran the latest update to 11.5.1.349
I'll let you know if it continues but for now I'm planning to learn a new software. Finally have some time to focus on this and if it works out I may say so long to Flash. I'll give CS6 a try but if it's not SIGNIFICANTLY improved (Brush tool comparable to ToonBoom, No losing data, Better Playback, Ability to export HTML5), it's just not worth it anymore. I've been using Flash since version 1 and since Adobe took it over, I hate to say that anything other than actionscript has gone WAY downhill. Many new features but they don't actually work well, or crash at runtime if used beyond a tutorial's level intensity. What's the point of all that functionality if it looks like garbage and can't perform on a professional level? Even if you do take the extra time to work slowly or limited to make it look nice - it loses the data! or now without HTML5 your venues of use are sliced in half? Pointless. I don't want to trash all my Flash experience, but I'm done defending an inferior product and waiting for it to catch up to a modern professional standard. I think my Flash days may be over very soon unfortunately. I feel like the're more interested in defending what they've created, than in making it work or even asking us what we want. I feel like a Girlfriend who's Man keeps promising to get steady work but hasn't after 10 years. Flash...we need to talk.

  • How can I make the audio waveform in the timeline come back?

    Hi all!
Please, excuse my -more than possible- nonnative spelling and grammatical errors beforehand.
For some days, I've been having this problem: the timeline of Premiere Pro CC won't display the audio waveform of the audios I use, no matter if it's music, video sound... It just shows a plain line, as if it was silence:
I wait till the project is fully charged and it never shows.
I'm used to synchronizing the camera audio with the clean audio using the waveform as guide, and even if it's not the only way, it the easiest for me.
I downloaded the latest version, hoping that this issue would be solved (or that whatever configuration I may have accidentally changed, would be reset), and the thing keeps happening. Maybe it's something simple, some option I couldn't find but it's there (I hope so!).
    Can someone help me?
    Thank you!

Wow, a lot of responses overnight (the time difference showed!).
Thanks everyone! Problem solved! =) As expected, it was just an option I didn't knew about. In my case, in was shooternz who nailed it. I just went to the wrench Icon > show waveform (don't know exactly the name in English, I use Premiere in Spanish) and voilà...  I feel dumb.. but happy it's solved nevertheless haha
Best luck solving your issue jonny9091!

  • Setting motion keyframes on head and end of a clip in the timeline

I've been exeriencing a weird problem lately.
If I throw a clip into the timeline, then double click it
back into the viewer, then use CONTROL K to place keyframes
across all motion perameters at the head of the clip, THEN hit the down arrow button to get to the end of the clip so I can make adjustments and have keyframes placed at the end of the clip, the process of hitting the down arrow to get to the end of the clip actually takes me to the head of the next clip in the timeline and up in the Viewer keyframe viewer.
If I use the left arrow to move one frame backwards to try and get to last frame of the clip I actually want to place a keyframe on the end of, it doesn't get
me back to the original clip...I've still got the second clip up in the Viewer motion keyframe area.
It's been requiring me to reload the clip from the timeline again, drag the viewer playhead to the end of the clip being careful to not accidentally go past the end of the clip, or it again goes into the next clip and it's impossible to navigate back to the first clip without double clicking it back up into the window.
So long question...after having placed keyframes at the very head of a clip double clicked back into the viewer from the timeline, how do I quickly get to the end of the clip to place my changed keyframe perameters, without overshooting the clip and running into the next?

To get to the Out point of the current clip, instead of the next clip/edit, you need to press Shift-O.
Also helpful: pressing Shift-I takes you to the In point.

  • Is there a way to see all my compound clips created on the timeline, in the browser as an accessible thumbnail list....?

I am facing a problem that
due to big footage I first extracted the seemingly fine clips in chunks in one timeline in various layers which is still enormous for my RAM
now I have to take out smaller and more appropriate bits from this timeline
I have opened another timeline where I just copy paste the best shots from my previous enormous timeline and this works fine due to less media for 6gb RAM mac pro
but it is really tedious to go back and forth to copy paste
it would be so wonderful if I could extract those bits from the clips just like we do with any other new footage from the browser window with all the clips visible
I think one way can be to export these compound clips seperately and import them as events into the browser but that would be a generation loss
is there any other way.....? to view these compound clips infront of my eyes all at once or keeping all that footage on the timeline besides the finalising layer is the only option...?
I am facing this rare problem because I'm editing a music video and no shot is more than 2 seconds and that too from several groups of footage that has to be mixed.....so all the data has to be visible to decide if a bit of guitar piece would look good here or drums or close up or long shot.....so everything has to be seen....can you suggest me a smarter workaround please ?

    Thank you.Ok say for e.g.
500 video files imported in fcpx
800 clips extracted from these obviously on the timeline and joined/compounded according to their content in say 15 layers according to 15 instruments used ,so now just to see the entire usable footage ....
now one 7 minute song sequence has to be made where bits would be simultaneously taken from these 15 layers as all instruments are playing simultaneously
these shots are not more than 2 secs each according to the beat........
when I try to work with these 15 layers as well as the Final primary layer that I'm making in the same timeline my fcpx becomes slow
but when I drag individual layer to individual timelines it is fine so that is the only option
but now for every 2 second bit I have to go back to the 15 layered timeline and find one single suitable shot
So I was wondering is there a way to be able to see these layers and clips on the timeline in the browser in a systematic fashion like the way we get with keywords  ?
and keywords can only be used in the imported clips already in the browser ,and not after we drag it on the timeline.....
Till now I think exporting and importing back is the only option ...but is there another work around ?

  • How to I get a marker name to show in the timeline?

I must have done something to disable it, but I recall marker names displaying in the Timeline when a marker is selected. Now I have to open the marker to see the name. How to I re-enable the display so marker names show in the timeline?
(Yes I looked in the FCP manual, but just try and find something like that in the PDF file!)
    thanks

Are the markers on the clips or the timeline?
    You might try view>show overlays
They're on clips and on the timeline itself.
Show Overlays does display them on the timeline (not in the Viewer), but it also displays in/out points and audio timecode. Is it all or nothing?

  • "Program error" When I click on the timeline/motion controls or try to export/save as my animation. PS CC late 2014

I have been working on an animation for an online ad. The file is 300 by 250. It's about 24 seconds long. I had completed and saved my work as a GIF file. I also saved some static JPGs of the animation. Everything was still working at this point. Then I closed Photoshop and reopened the PSD file to export it to a different format, but when I clicked on the time-marker in the timeline window or tried to edit my animation, I got this error message: "could not complete your request because of a program error." Watch the following video to see exactly what happens:
I'm running Adobe Photoshop CC November 2014. I'm working on a PSD file, 24 seconds long, 30 fps.
I looked in my library/preferances/adobe folder for photoshop's error log file. This is the error in that file:

Thank you so much for reading this. It sucks to work so long on an ad and then have this happen for seemingly no reason. Please help if you can.

Looks like issues with some linked smart objects... You could try and copy/ move the whole shebang to another location in the hopes that it either fixes the issue or PS completely forgets the linked files completely so you might relink/ replace them.

  • Not happy with moving around keys on the timeline

I just changed from Final Cut to Premiere CS5.0 and I really like it. Working on a Macbook Pro i5 2.3GHZ, Mac OSX 10.7 But I am not happy with moving around on the timeline. I was used to using the up and down arrows to move to next video edit point, marker point or audio edit point. I tried everything to change it, highlighted the track etc. It only works together with the FN key, which is a bit uncomfortable. And then it definetely is not going to any audio edit points (very annoying!!!) and marker points (have to use Q and W keys). It makes me doubting if continuing with Premiere or not. Its such an esencial and easy to use tool while editing in a normal fast editing rythm. When I change it in the customize keyboard menu, into a Custom keyboard or FCP keyboard, it would ignore my changes on the arrowkeys, although it recognizes any other changes I do. Is it so complicate to change this issue in Premiere to how it is set in FCP? Its such an obvious tool, using the arow keys to move around, cannot beleive that we have to live with such a limitation. Please!!!

You dont have to live with that at all if you are fixed only to what you have previously done.
