Accidentally trashed originals, now in a bind

For a while this summer, I had my prefs set to not copy image files into iPhoto when they were added to the library. Then, when 'cleaning' up my hard drive, I trashed and emptied the trash some of the original image files.
Now when I want to put the events that contained those images into the iPhoto trash, I get caught in an endless cycle where iPhoto tells me I must find the originals for the images in the event, and there's no way to get out of it except to force quit iPhoto.
I could 'find' a bogus image file and try tellin iPhoto that it is the original for all the event contents which are giving me trouble. I haven't tried that, but it seems doomed to failure.
I did a show package contents on my library, hoping to find something I could delete to get rid of the events I want to trash. But I was leery of deleting anything, so I haven't done that.
What should I do. The originals the program wants are lost and gone forever.

Try rebuilding your library using iPhoto library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
If that does not fix it - or at least help you will have to start over with a new library and import the remaining photos into it (quit iPhoto and drag the iphoto library to the desktop, launch iPhoto and create a new library, verity that the preference to split items imported from the finder into events is not checked and drag each folder from the original folder in the iPhoto library on your desktop to the iPhoto icon in the dock
Backup now and often - and don't ever consider using a referenced library again

They do. It's called Time Machine.
You need to reinstall all of your Apps. That should replace all of the support files you nuked.

How  did you install GarageBand on your Mac? Did it come preinstalled with the other iLife applications?
If your MacOS supports the AppStore, you should be able to redownload GarageBand from the AppStore, see this support Article: OS X: About OS X Recovery on how to download again:
Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my IMac desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

Since you didn't mention what type of error message you were seeing, I'm going to guess on what is happening.
I'm guessing that since you threw away Time Machine backups, that Time Machine is probably active on your Mac. There is a chance then that the files you tossed are marked as in use. You can't delete files that are in use.
Try turning Time Machine off, then restart your Mac. Then try deleting them again.
Once done, turn Time Machine back on.

restore your app from the trash and then properly uninstall.
if that fails, CC desktop lists applications as "Up to Date" when not installed

  • I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them

I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them or get them out of my trash and they keep multiplying. And to make matters worse, I tried renaming them as pdf files thinking that might do the trick.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities.  If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that,  and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running.  if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way
    good luck

  • I dragged some of the Time Machine backup folders into the Trash and now I can't empty them out of the trash because it says the applicaiotns ar ruining - what can I do?

I have dragged soem of my Time Machine folders into the Trash. Now when I try to empty the Trash it says it cannot empty some of the files because the applicaitons are running.
What can I do to delete them and completely empty the Trash.
NOTE: the Trash is on my iMac, not the Time Machine backup drive.
    Thanks!

    Greetings Dennis,
Time Machine handles file deletion of its backups or you can use the Time Machine window to tell Time Machine to delete specific files: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    Follow the steps here: http://Pondini.org/TM/E6.html

any idea how i restore my office email account, looks like i have moved all items to trash and now have no email account ! no time machine either

let's go back to your original post: what do you mean "it looks like you moved all items to trash"??
You DID move them to trash? (we can discuss WHY once we cure you)...
Can you open a window in finder and get to  applications and then to utilities? Is MAIL in there?
And your "office email account"-- do you mean physical office, like place of work and you want that account in your mac mail on your computer?  ~OR~ do you mean, microsoft office, mail account?
The difference is necessary to know...

  • I accidentally trashed the desktop folder on MacbookPro OS10.8.5.

I transferred from another Mac an iPhoto library, which appeared on the desktop of my 2008 MacbookPro with OS10.8.5. When I trashed it, the entire desktop folder was also trashed  It now starts up with a blank screen, except for the picture. Any suggestions for getting my desktop out of the trash?

Can you boot into a Recovery partition or locate any other bootable OS X by holding Opt? Or diagnostic? Or Disk Utility to see what can be repaired?

"You can access recovery mode only when your Mac starts up, although there are two ways to do so."
"The easy way On most Macs, you can access recovery mode by simply restarting or starting up the Mac while holding down Command+R. Keep holding these keys until you see a window with  OS X Utilities in large text across the top. If this procedure doesn’t work for you, try the next method. The alternate way On any Mac, you can access recovery mode using OS X’s Startup Manager "
Keyboard combinations on startup, may help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Accidentally trashed mailplist for builtin account types

    Hi
I accidentally trashed the plist file from /library/mail/account types/.com.builtin.mail accounts.
I believe this file is required for automatically setting up email accounts in mail can anyone please tell me how to get the plist file without doing a reinstall.

You are correct as to that the file is required for automatically setting up mail accounts. Here is how to get it back.
    1. Download a copy of Pacifist from http://www.charlessoft.com/
    2. Open Pacifist
    3. Insert your Leopard Install Disc, and click open Apple Install Disks and select the DVD you inserted
    4. After it loads, use the search bar to search for the missing file (typing com.apple.builtin will find it).
    5. Click install in upper left corner and type your password.
That's it! The file has been replaced! And if you were running Time Machine, imagine how much easier that would have been! Hope this works for you!

Can anybody help? Accidentally trashed iphoto library, emptied trash!

Obvious question I know, but do you have a back up?
There is no way to recover an intact iPhoto Library once it's deleted. The best you can hop for is togged bak the photos. Try a app like File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • Accidentally trashed iPhoto Library - how to remake

    Hi,
I have a user who accidentally trashed her iPhoto Library and emptied the bin.
With the tool Photorec I am in the progress of finding all jpg on the disk system - it takes a lot of time and it is not finished yet. So far more that 85.000 files with the file type "jpg" has been found.
The good news is that a whole lot of deleted images from her iPhoto Library is showing up.
My question is: Since the iPhoto database consist of different sizes of the same picture I can see, from the files retrieved so far, that I will need some way to filter the original large jpg file from all the smaller dublets, face recognition files and other.
Any one know of a way to do this the easy way?
    Best regards
    Peter

Some duplicate detection applications can recognize duplicates in different sizes.
If Terence Devlin's recommendation of sorting according to size does not weed out all duplicates, you might try one of these helpers.

Go to the genius bar. You've mucked up your MBP OS and it requires a hands on repair.
