Accidentally wiped out windows while installing Ubuntu.

Recently I bought a laptop at Best Buy (Lenovo Ideapad N586) and used a upgrade offer to upgrade to Windows 8. Today I installed Ubuntu and intended to dual boot but I screwed up and accidentally wiped the drive during the install. The laptop did not come with any windows disks. Will I have to buy WIndows to reinstall it?
Thanks!

Thanks, but that did not work. When I erased the Hard Drive it must have wiped the recovery partition also, When I press that button, it just boots into Ubuntu.
Hi
As the button is not working and you erased the whole hard drive, then you cannot anyhow revert to the windows 7 without the windows disk. However it is neccessary that you will have to buy disks. As you have ubuntu, you could use it to download windows 7 official iso from my digital life forums and use the product key that is found below your laptop. Link for iso is below
http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-link...
You could either burn a disk of the iso or make a bootable disk/pen drive from it.
Use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool to make a dvd/usb of iso. After installing windows then install all the drivers for windows 7, Download below

HELP!!!! I accidentally erased OS X while installing windows 7 on MacBook Air, how do I install back to OS X?

Use the Flash Drive that came with your computer it has Snow Leopard installed on it. If you lost it or cannot find it then call Apple and they will replace it for you, I don't know how much they will charge.
BTW when installing MS Windows please follow the directions whether you are using Boot Camp or a vitualialization solution (Parallels, Fusion, etc.) had  you done this you would not have had any issues.

    Hello,
In that case, what you want to do is run a program which sends an ATA SECURE ERASE command to the hard disk drive, which tells the embedded controller in the drive to basically purge the contents of the drive.  When it's finished running, there will be no information left on the disk.
If you are comfortable with Linux, this can be done by running the HDParm command.  The  Center for Magnetic Recording Research at UC San Diego has released a Secure Erase program which can be run from DOS.  There's also the Parted Magic Linux Live CD/USB, which creates a bootable CD/DVD/USB flash to boot from, but it's not free.
Another option would be to run Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN).  This program does not perform an ATA SECURE ERASE command, but instead overwrites all of the areas on the disk so that no information will be retrievable.  When finished, you will have a blank drive as well.
At that point, you can just boot off of your Windows 7 installation USB flash drive and load the operating system onto the now-empty hard disk drive inside the ThinkPad X220 as you normally would.

  • I destroyed mac while installing ubuntu.  Id like to get mac back, please help?

I was curious about linux so i installed ubuntu and accidentally destroyed my mac partition.  Id like to get mac back, please help!!! I have the snow leopard install dvd but it causes kernel panics.  And i obviously cant download lion from the app store because i am using ubuntu.
I am using a mbp 8,1 early 2011.  Please help!!

I read your post as indicating you wiped the OS X partition from the disk.
If that is the case then, given  the date of the machine I don't think you have network recovery,  you should check to see if the Recovery partition is still on the disk (depends on how you wiped out the OS X stuff when you installed Ubuntu) by doing as Thomas said hold command R while starting up.
If the recovery partition is still there you're home free, just follow the screen prompts. If it is not there then the only recourse you have is to get it to boot off the original SL install disks. At what point during the boot procedure with the SL disks does the machine panic? And as was asked above, these are the SL disks that shipped with your machine?
If I misread your post then follow the advice of the previous posters.
    regards

    Hi,
Both the links are working for me. Did you try more than once? Also, can you try to download the packages from a different network if you encounter the failure consistently? There could be some restrictions in your network causing this failure.

  • Help!  Accidentally wiped out my website.

    Hi,
Hope someone can help me with this.
I have a .mac account and designed a beautiful website that took days to develop. I was under the impression that with .mac you could have multiple websites. So I thought I was creating an alternate site where I could post movies for my client to view. What happened is this "new" website I'm discovering actually "updated" my existing website, wiping all my original site content away and replacing it with this one page that I thought was going to be a secondary site.
I know it's a long shot -- but is there any way at all to revert back to my original site content.
Oh, please, let there be a way....
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

When you decided to create a second site, how did you go about doing it? Did you delete the pages of the first site and then create new pages for the second site? Or did you do something else.
If you deleted the pages of the first site in iWeb, then I'm afraid your site is gone unless you happened to back up your domain file. It is found in Username/Library/Application Support/iWeb If, by chance, you have been regularly backing up your home folder, you may have a back up.
It is possible to have multiples sites with .mac. There are couple of ways to go about it. One is to keep all the sites in one domain file (so that you can see all of them on the left hand column when you open iWeb). Another is to have a separate domain file for each site. Once we've got the missing site straightened out for you, any number of people here can help you how to have separate files for each site if you would like.
    Two more questions:
when you visit your site, are you using your short url (web.mac.com/username) or your long url (web.mac.bom/username/iWeb/sitename)?
Go to your iDisk and burrown down as follows:
    Web/Sites/iWeb
There should be an index.html file and one or more folders.
How many folders are there? Do their names correspond to your sites?

  • Need urgent help: OS wiped out

I accidentally wiped out my OS while doing an assignment trying to install an OS to my UBS drive. I followed some guide online and now my OS is wiped along with thousands dollars worth of softwares. Not to mention ton of work iam currently doing for client.
Is there anyway I can recover that?
    Thanks

If you didn't make a backup of your Windows environment on extermal media, you have no realistic hope of recovering anything after doing an initial install of a completely new OS on your system

  • How do I install Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite L670D-102

    Hello
I have been trying to load Ubuntu 10.10 (tried both AMD64 and i386 versions of Desktop Edition) onto a Satellite L670D-102 using a Live CD. The CD spins for a while, there is some activity on the hard drive and then I get a flashing white cursor (a hyphen) on a black screen. I left it all night and it remained the same. I tried with a 'live' usb and again, no boot. The cds and usb work in other machines running both amd and intel cpus.
The sort of questions that spring to mind are:-
Is there some security or other setting within the cmos that prevents anything other than Windows being loaded?
Are Toshiba simply anti- Linux and I need a new machine?
Do I need a special bios to run Ubuntu?
Any help in resolving the issue would be welcome.

    Hi
I use a Toshiba Satellite L655. It came with a Win7. The first thing I did after buying it was to wipe out Win7 and install ubuntu 10.10 on the entire hard disk (not a dual boot or Wubi install). Now I want to try out ubuntu 11.04 beta from a live usb and I am trying to change the boot order. The laptop doesn't boot from the usb drive. I am unable to enter the BIOS. I have tried pressing ESC, F2 etc while switching on the laptop. So far, I have not been able to access the BIOS setup.
I have tried googling and I read about Toshiba's "legacy-free" laptops. But am not sure if mine is such a one. Now, I don't have Win at all in my laptop. I have only ubuntu 10.10. I need to access the BIOS setup and change the boot order so that my laptop boots from the USB drive. How do I do this?
    Any guidance would be welcome.

  • [Ubuntu] Can't install Ubuntu on my MacBook Air.

I want to install Ubuntu on my MacBook Air. Problem : each time the DVD-RW burning ends, the disc becomes unreadable. How can I install Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits on a MacBook Air late 2011 still with OS X Lion ?
    Hi there.
I have a MacBook Air late 2011 still working with OS X Lion (actually OS X 10.7.4).
I just wanted to install Ubuntu 12.04 64 bits on my MacBook Air but I can't and I don't know why. The problem I encounter is the following : each time the DVD-RW burning ends, the disc becomes unreadable by the system and I can't do anything but erase it and try to burn it again… This is the fourth time I did it and it still doesn't works. Impossible to burn the DVD-RW without making it unreadable by the system. And I checked Bootcamp Assistant options but there's nothing about Linux…
I use an original Apple's superdrive to burn the disc.
A friend just told me to use Bootcamp Assistant, install Windows 7 on a new partition, then replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu… But I don't really know what to do. This is the first time that I try to install another system…
Could anyone help me ? Thanks.

I finally did it. In fact, if the DVD wasn't readable by OS X after the burning, he was readable by rEFIt on the superdrive. Me (OS X Lion 4 on a MacBook Air late 2011) and a friend (OS X Mountain Lion 1 on a MacBook Pro of 2008) did it this way :
    1. Download the Ubuntu iso named "ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso".
    2. Burn it on a blank DVD with the disk utility.
    3. Make a partition for Ubuntu with the disk utility.
    4. Install rEFIt.
    5. Restart the Mac.
    6. Select the icon of Tux behind a little disc.
    7. Try Ubuntu from the disc.
    8. While trying Ubuntu on the disc, use the installer to install Ubuntu. NOTE: NE CAREFUL WHILE INSTALLING UBUNTU, IF YOU CHOOSE THE WRONG OPTION AT A MOMENT OF THE INSTALLATION YOU CAN ERASE OS X.
    9. After the installation, Ubuntu should tell you that you might restart the computer. Restart the Mac, and you'll arrive on the rEFIt menu.
    10. You can now use Ubuntu on your Mac, enjoy.
We both did it and it worked well, I even reinstalled Ubuntu and it worked well again. Just be careful while installing Ubunut, I'll maybe repeat myself but choosing the wrong option could suppress OS X. Except if you just want a MacBook Air with Ubuntu for the weight… Have a nice day.

oh, and i currently use windows 7

With a nod to veteran poster Zevoneer...here's what you should know.
The transfer of content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod, but there are third-party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. Some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Check out the web pages for more info. This is just a sample of what's available.

  • Screen stuck on registering? Wiped out my IPod

Everytime I plug in my Ipod it tells me it needs to registered so I do that. But when I hit submit, the page doesnt go anywhere. I basically can't get back to managing the info and music to sync on to my IPod.
I also accidentally wiped out my whole IPod which I know how to fix.
I just cant get back to the main 'sync' page

It's like most Windows programs, go to the menu and Help > About give the exact version number.
The screen resolution setting are found in Control Panel > Display > Settings tab. Put it at 1024x768.
