Accidently deleted "Network" icon in finder

I Accidently pulled the "Network" icon out of the finder window and now I can't get it back. I can't connect to another computer on my ethernet network. I can't even select "shift apple K" -- nothing comes up.

Try...
Finder>Preferences>Sidebar>Sow these items in Sidbar:, then check Network box.

  • Network icon in Finder not functional

    I have an Intel Mac Mini Core 2 Duo w/OS X 1.4.10.
My Network icon shows up in Finder just fine. BUT, below that it only shows three folders
    Applications
    Library
    Users
I can't see or browse my network at all. I can click on Go --> Connect To Server and manually do it, but I would rather have the option to see all the machines on my network. I have tried removing and re-adding the Network icon in Finder | Preferences. I have done a killall -HUP Finder.
I tried deleting all of those folders. Now my Network is empty, at least according to the OS X point of view.
On the flip side, I know Samba is working because I can browse the Mac from all my PC's.
Does any of you Mac guru's know what's going on? I know *nix and I know Windows. Mac's are fairly new to me...
    Thanks

username/password - I inherited this machine so yes, I am pretty sure I might have done that. Would it be easier to create another user and that way the preferences would be "fresh"?
Hey, great idea for a test!
I saw in that other Network folder problem thread about deleting a file called com.apple.systempreferences (or something very similar). Would that help?
The partial list of filesfolders I've seen cause problems are...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/SystemConfiguration/
I haven't been using it very long so configuring settings over again isn't a big issue.
If User settings aren't the problem... doesn't look like it to me so far, then an Archive and Install from your Install CD/DVD might be the trick.
P.S. Should I have to recreate the Network folder after reboot? applejack didn't recreate it if it was supposed to...
No, Applejack doesn't create anything... the OS should re-create that Network stuff once it reboots and finds none... maybe you have to toggle/do some Network stuff afterwards... not sure... still a bit blown away that what I did to fix the problem in several instances like yours... came up empty on your end!

  • Accidentally deleted network icon from viewer

Can anyone help me? I accidentally deleted my network icon from my viewer. When I double click my hard drive the network icon used to be right below the hard drive icon on the far left. I accidentally dragged it out and dropped it. How do I reinstate that?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi
Go to the Finder menu, then Preferences. Click on the "Sidebar" tab, and tick the Network entry. It will re-appear in your sidebar.

  • Accidently Deleted Mail Icon & can't get mail back

Hi There, Mistakenly all the icons on the desktop have been deleted except the hard drive icon. Now I lost the ability to access my mail program. Had an icon in the dock but it didn't work. It didn't bounce or anything. I tryed to drag it to the desk top & it let me, then it disappeared from the screen. Also lost my calculator short cut on the desktop. Please, any suggestions, I would be grateful.

    WireMan1 wrote:
That's what I figured about the mail. I've also found that I deleted the calculator & I think a pic decompression program for opening pics. But that's minor.
I am happy to report having just check the HD & 20.7 GB is free. I'm in the middle of backing up 992 pics to disc & getting them off the HD to free up even more so it looks like I'm good to go for a reinstall & do an archive.
That sounds like plenty - over 50% free gives the OS plenty of room to play with.
I found out also why I think mail & the other things got deleted. I found that I never made an alias of mail or calc & dragged them from applications to the desktop. I one time before deleted the icon for mail & I dragged it from the Apps folder to get it working again hence when the desktop was accidently deleted there went the mail & calc.
Oops! This is also bad because the apps may not get updated when they should by system/security updates. It's generally a bad idea to move the Apple applications even into sub-directories of /Applications, never mind out of the folder altogether. One thing you might consider is doing your everyday stuff as a standard user rather than as an admin. That should prevent you doing things like that by accident as you'd have to authenticate first. I work from an administrator account because I would just find it too annoying otherwise but there are definite downsides to doing so, including security implications. (There are some things you can do to mitigate the security risks but unless you really need administrative access a lot, you might prefer to run as a standard user.) It also means you have a "clean" account for running Software Update which may be an advantage.
I'm going to try the reinstall & I'll report back the results.
Sounds good! It is still a good idea to backup files you can't afford to lose - even if you plan to archive & install and choose the options to preserve user settings etc., something can always go wrong. But you know that, right?
You sure you don't work for mac? You sound like your very well versed on this stuff.
If I am working for Apple, I sure want to know why they aren't paying me! I'm not especially knowledgeable - there are lots of people on these forums who not only have training (which I lack completely) but vastly more experience. Now doesn't that inspire you with confidence in my advice?!
Can't thank you enough for the back & forth Dialog.
You're very welcome - and thanks for saying so and offering to report back. I like to know whether something I've suggested has helped or not.

  • Intermitent Eject symbol by Network icon in Finder pane

Please can anyone tell me why sometimes (and only sometimes) I get an eject symbol next to the network icon in the left pane of Finder windows?
    Pressing it does nothing.
I wouldn't say I connect to a network but maybe I do and misunderstand the terminology - I use Airport to connect to a wireless internet router. There is one other computer that connects to the same router also wirelessly.
Airport also occasionally shows other wireless networks as well as mine, presumably from adjacent properties.
My only real concern would be if it meant other people were accessing my computer somehow via the 'network'.
I'm nearly always connected to the internet (when I'm logged into the computer) and it isn't a case that the symbol is there whenever I'm online and not when I'm not (although the latter could be true).
It seems odd that the eject symbol's appearance seems random and doesn't relate to when the other PC using the same router is/isn't online.
    Rob

The eject button next to the Network icon is a bug. It shouldn't be there. I've been waiting for it to be fixed for over a year.
On the other hand, it is harmless. When you are actually connected to another machine via any one of many networking protocols, it will show up in the sidebar with it's own (functional) eject button.
If you have file sharing turned off and/or have the firewall turned on, you need not worry about others accessing your computer remotely.

  • Accidently deleted genre-icon

    Hello,
I have accidently deleted the genre-icon for my classical music in iTunes. How can I get it back?
It can still be found in program files/itunes/itunes.resources

That's odd. A couple of thoughts:
The genre icons only appears in Grid View so can you go to the iTunes View menu and confirm that that's what's been selected.
If so, can you check that you haven't accidentally or otherwise deleted the classical files from your iTunes Library or changed their genres. Put another way, are there still Classical entries in your Library, listed as such in List View?
If so, is there any reference at all to the Classical genre in Grid View, such as an empty square labelled Classical, or is there no mention of it at all?
And finally, did the Classical icon in your iTunes.Resources folder happen to get renamed? Mine goes by genre-classicT.jpg so I'm guessing yours should be the same.

Now to worry the icons in the Dock are only aliases.
So if you go into Applications and find System Preferences and drag that back to the Dock that will create another one for you.

  • Delete .mac network icon

Can anyone tell me how to delete the .mac network icon from my System Preferences? I threw away the software years ago, and got rid of a lot of other gunk coming from it this week, now I get an annoying message instead of the Screen Savers I want to see. Yes, it's in my Screen Saver list.

The message is: Please select one or more subscriptions by clicking Configure in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference panel.
Sounds like that is coming from the screen saver (probably called .Mac) that uses shared pictures in your .Mac online storage. It is not directly related to any "network option."
If you choose to use a random screen saver, when the .Mac screen saver is selected at random, it wants to know what .Mac account to use for the pictures it displays. You can either not use the random choice, and pick a screen saver that is not the .Mac screen saver. Or you can remove the .Mac screen saver from the list of choices. Since it's just a screen saver module, there should not be any problem with removing it.
    It should be at
    <startup volume>/System/Library/Screen Savers/
The problem here is that files with names that begin with a period (.) are invisible in Finder, and this module is named .Mac.slideSaver. So it is invisible to Finder.
You can use Unix command in Terminal to find and move it, or you can download this handy utility called TinkerTool
    http://www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerTool.html
It has an option to +Show hidden and system files+ on its Finder tab. Select that option, then click the button at the bottom of the TinkerTool window to +Relaunch Finder+.
    Now, if you go to
    <startup volume>/System/Library/Screen Savers/
and you should see a file called .Mac.slideSaver. Move it to the Desktop or another location. Now, when you use the System Preferences pane for screen savers, the .Mac screen saver should not be on the list. If you ever want it back, you can move that file back.
Don't forget to change the +Show hidden and system files+ setting in TinkerTool back to OFF.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Exactly how did you delete it?
Not knowing what computer or OS you are using, it's not possible to provide any help. We need more info and a filled-in profile.
You can always restore the system from your backup.

  • Finder window's "Network" icon has a name bug in French localized version

In Mac OS X Tiger (and previous versions already), when running in French localized, the "Network" icon on the left side of Finder window is translated "Réseau". This is correct.
When no network is available (no cable connected to the Ethernet port for instance), then "Réseau" turns into the english name "Network". When the network is again connected, then "Network" turns back into the French localized name "Réseau".
