Accidently recorded 60i footage - how do I bring it into FCP? Help!

I have just found that I have filmed some of my work in 60i (using a Sony Z1) and some in 50i. I actually wanted it all in 50i (PAL) as I'm in the UK and naturally wanted the footage to be consistent.
The problem I have found now is, is that I can't bring in the 60i footage onto FCP. I'm connected up via Firewire, and am using a G5. I've tried changing the capture settings to NTSC, but no joy. All I actually get is audio, as the video preview is disabled. Naturally it plays fine on the Z1. I've also tried it on DSR-45, in which it also plays back fine on the monitor, but I can't get anything into FCP.
Do I need an NTSC firewire cable? Or do I need to get the footage transferred to PAL (50i)?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Make sure that your Z1U menu is set to play back NTSC 60i video or if you are using a player other than the Z1U make sure it is set to 60i NTSC output.
Create a new project in FCP with NTSC 60i settings and import the footage. Then export the new footage to Compressor and transcode to 50i.
BTW there is no such thing as an NTSC Firewire cable. The cables don't care what standard you use
Good luck.

It's important to keep in mind that the picture files are NOT stored in the Organizer. They are not stored in Lightroom or Bridge either...
The organizer is based on a catalog which stores the pictures properties, mainly the location of the pictures on your drive(s). It's the same idea of catalogs in Lightroom, and the nice thing is that Lightroom can convert organizer catalogs to its own format. The most obvious way for you will be to use Lightroom.
Bridge is a file browser which is a different way than to use catalogs.

  • Importing AVCHD and DCIM folders into iMovie that someone has sent me. They live on my desktop. How do I bring them into an event library?

Someone has sent me the AVCHD and DCIM folders to import into iMovie. They live on my desktop. How do I bring them into an event library?

    DCIM contains only stills.jpg ...
AVCHD is a highly complex file structure:
the 'video iself' is within STREAM as .mts, plus corresponding .cpi files in the CLIPINF ...
if the structure is intact, you go via File/Import/Camera Archive …
WITHOUT such a complete structure, the mts are not readable for iM and the automatic conversion routines don't get triggered. you have to manually convert/rewrap with 3rd party tools.-
the pics/jpegs can be imported via Finder/drag'n drop.-

  • How to Import Shake scripts into FCP?

    Hello,
There may be info here on the Forum, but I wanted to ask this anyway: I've made a Shake script and a File Out Node and rendered that, but when I go to FCP I can't import, or Open that file. I did make it a Quicktime file, but I'm sure that I'm missing something. Could someone tell me how to import Shake comps into FCP? Thanks!

I guess I'm not sure what you mean, then - You can't render to a "script" file.
What format was was the QuickTime file you produced with your File Out node? Are you trying to do something with an Alpha Channel? If so, you could use the Animation codec with colors set to Millions+ or a TIFF sequence (or PNG), or maybe ProRes 4444, but I don't know if Shake can output to that codec.
    More detail please,

  • Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
    Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV.  With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In  FCP  Audio /Video Settings
    Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
    Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s  ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert.  Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?
Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum.  You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall.  I think we have the same menu system.  I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format.  Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall.  I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def.  Best wishes.

  • How to import tif sequences into FCP

We did some painted animation on After Effects, save them as TIF sequences and want to import them into FCP. Does anyone has any tips on how to do that?
It seems that saving them as tif sequence it will preserve more quality when importing them into the movie (live-action) in FCP or AVID, etc.
    Thanks!

I know... and also I could have saved them as a quicktime movie straight from after effects. The reason I decided not, is that I was told that the tiff files in sequence would have better quality (including when using blending upper and lower fields) when importing them into a final composition at the professional studio, where we will put the image and the sound together.
The professionals that recomended me that use AE in PCs, them they go to a editing facility and import all the tif sequences (usually they use AVID) into their videos. I wanted to do this in our FCP and go to the editing facility with all the image ready.
I thought that FCP could import image sequences. I do not know if it would make any difference just having all in quick time.
    Any tips anyone?

  • How do I bring audio into sync?

I captured content from a DV camera and FCX reported that some of the audio was in a different format and may cause audio to be out of sync. So now some of the audio is ofset by a few frames. My question is how to 'slide' the audio along to bring it back into sync.
PS. I have no idea why some audio should be in a differnt format.

Since you posted in the FCE forum, by FCX I suppose you mean Final Cut Extress and not FCP-X.  FCP-X is totally different and would require different solutions from FCE.  If you meant FCP-X, that forum is here: https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_pro_ x?view=discussions
For FCE: When capturing from a DV camera, it is important to know which audio sampling rate was used during recording.  Most cameras can record at 48khz, 16 bit or 32khz,12 bit.  If it was recorded at one rate and captured at the other (or place in a Sequence with the wrong rate), the audio will drift out of sync.
To correct, identify which sampling rate was used for recording, then capture that way and edit in a Sequence with those settings.  Alternatively, you could try resampling the audio in an app like SoundTrack Pro, but that doesn't always seem to work as well as doing it right the first time.

  • Editing HDV footage in AE and bringing it into PPro - What about HD Quality?

So seeing that chroma key is better in AE, this is what I'm thinking:
I could clean out the green screen in AE and bring the footage into PPro. So the first question I have is about HD Quality or loss. I mean I'd have to "export" a video from AE and then use that video in PPro no? If so, then will this process degrade the HD quality?
    The other question is:
What if I simply remove the "green" but not add any "background" in AE. Will I be able to add a background in PPro? Like, is there going to be some sort of an alpha channel or something?

There will be an alpha channel if you export one. I like using the Quicktime Animation codec. Large but clean. You have to select "Millions of Colors +" and the "+" sign adds the alpha channel.
Have you tried just using Dynamic Link instead?

  • How do I bring Massive into GarageBand?

I am using the new GarageBand and I cant figure out how to bring it in as a plugin! Help please

    When you download Massive
    http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths-samplers/massive/
and mount the diskimage, double-click the installer:
When it is finished, you will be prompted to launch the "Service Center" app.
It is in a subfolder of "Native Instruments" in Applications.
    This will update the content.
In GarageBand 10.0 use the Smart Controls > Info panel to activate the Massive instruments from the "instrument" brick in the Smart Controls Info panel.
In GarageBand 11 set the Sound Generator in the "Edit" pane of the Track Info panel to "Massive".

  • Capturing footage from a camcorder memory card into FCP 7

I teach high school video technology.  We are using FCP 7 and are awaiting the upgrade to 10.
In the past, we connected canon camcorders to the macs using a firewire and utilized the log and capture option under the file menu to put footage from miniDV tapes onto the computer to edit.
We just purchased canon FS400 cameras that use a memory card to store video instead.  We have 18 computers and only ONE allows us to use the log and transfer option under the FCP 7 file menu to import footage from the memory card to the computer so the kids can edit what they shot.  We have connected the camera to the computer using the USB cord that came with the cameras.  However, there's only a message that comes on the camera LCD that says not to disconnect the USB cable or the power source until you safely end the connection from the computer.
When we launch FCP and select the log and transfer option from the file menu, nothing happens.  on the one computer that DOES work, log and transfer allows the footage on the memory card to pop up after a little while and we drag it where we need it to go and it uploads to the computer.
I'm thinking it has to do with the computer settings.  I tried the software updates on one computer and nothing changed.  Still unable to import/capture.  Please help as the district tech support can't get to us anytime soon and my students have planned and shot 2 different productions they can't even edit yet.  I don't want to keep planning and shooting if they can never edit.  Thanks so much for ANY reply.

i'm not sure what you mean when you say "make sure you see the cards mounted on your computer."
You know when you insert a CD or external firewire drive, it appears on the desktop and in the browser windows? That's what should happen with your camera media. You may have to set the camera differently, try a different cable, etc., until you can see the media.
Wait until the computer recognizes the media, then launch Final Cut.

  • How to correctly import .mts into FCP with full 5.1 audio

Well, I've found a couple of solutions to this so far. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a stickie, but it might be useful to others as well.
Getting the audio from new consumer video cameras, for example my Sony HandyCam, which have 1080p video, and 5.1 surround sound audio into FCP can be a bit tricky. The hard part is the audio. FCP will import the camera's .mts files fine using Log and Transfer, but the audio is mixed down to stereo.
This solution was posted over at Ken Story's FCP boards:
    http://www.shedworx.com/hd-information/surround-sound
Although I haven't tried it, it looks very good.
I actually tried the following method, using Parallels (i.e., some form of Windows):
I used TSMuxer in Windows to demux the .mts files. I then used BeLight which is a front end GUI for BeSweet **(you have to download both, and drag both the BeSweet application and the azid.dll file into the BeLight folder before you run). This separates the resulting .ac3 file into 6 mono .wav files.
I then just imported them back into FCP and all was well.
The advantage of this method is that it's free, but the major disadvantage is that it only runs in Windows, so you have to have a PC or emulator. So next time, I'll likely give VoltaicHD a spin.
Hope this helps anyone trying to do the full import to FCP

Oooof! Does this mean that we have to do this procedure, using VoltaicHD, for each and every one of the ~1750 clips with 5.1 surround I have from my trip to China? Perhaps I misunderstood, but it looked like this process was a one-clip-at-a-time process?

  • How to import YouTube videos into FCP for editing

I am doing a television interview, and we want to cut away to a YouTube video. Is there a way to download and import YouTube videos into Final Cut Express?

It's a clip from CNN (with all credits etc. added). When one refers to it as a clip posted on "YouTube", then people understand the quality will be poor.
I've watched television go from everything shot on a tripod with clean, meticulous editing rules, to almost anything goes. It has to do with cultural reference.

  • How to import Powerpoint movie into FCP

I have a powerpoint slideshow from a client and am needing to import it into FCP. In PPT I saved it as "Make Movie", and sought to import as .mov into FCP. When i try to open it, I get error , message, "Out of Memory." I have 27 GB of memory on the main drive, and the file is only 49MB. Any help would be appreciated.

First find a sharp object, then look for the soft spot on the inside of your wrist...
    or if you must,
Export each slide as a still file and rework them in Motion. You probably need to set them on a background because NO ONE EVER build powerpoint for text safe in video.
