Accidently unplugged a fairly new HD, now it does not work - "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."

Hi all, I have an older intel Macbook running 10.6.8 - I recently plugged in my 2tb seagate external hd to look at some files and then accidently unplugged it with my knee. Now, the common message that you see above comes up everytime I plug it it. I've looked at the disk utility but it won't let me verify it or repair it... Is there anything I can do about this problem? I can't seem to get it to show up on a windows pc either...
Thanks for your help

When installing my new HP printer I received the following error message when I inserted  the software install disk: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with 2 radio buttons "Ignore" or "reject"  I was able to eject the disk but the message remains. Now every time I start up the printer this error message pops up on my computer.  I have since used the disk drive successfully for music CD's etc.  How can I get rid of this message?

    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

    - Verify the file and disk formats on your camcorder and on your friend computer whether they support what you want to do. Also, if you are using a specific application to do the task, you may need to verify an application whether it supports the file format (e.g. MPEG4, Apple Intermediate Codec).
    - Verify the device cable type whether Mac OS X 10.4.x supports.
    - Verify the device compatibility with Mac OS X 10.4.x.
    - Check an available firmware or driver for the camcorder that has developed after Mac OS X 10.4.4.
    - Try diagnosing and repairing local hard disk and camcorder's drive directory.
    - Verify disks permissions issue.
    - Verify whether the disk is TOO warm or cold to read.
    - If every troubleshooting does not solve the issue, consider to reformat the camcorder drive.

  • New HDD The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

I've put my brand new 2.5" hybrid hard drive in an enclosure and get the following message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." and have been given the following 3 options: Initialize... / Ignore  / Eject.
What does Initialize do and is the right option for me if I want to format and partition my hard drive?
    All help appreciated.

Choose "Initialize". Use Disk Utility to partition it. Choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Initialization formats a blank or otherwise unreadable disk for use with OS X.

  • New USB stick - "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer'

I recently bought a 32GB USB stick to transfer data from my current Powerbook G4 with Mac OS X 10.4.11 to a new laptop.
However, when I insert the disk I am told "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with the options to "Initialise", "Ignore" or "Eject".
In all honesty I just want to avoid having to send the USB back, getting a refund and finding one that is compatible with my computer.
Consequently I was wondering if there's a way I can alter the USB disk to become readable by my computer?
Also the USB is described as an "iBoutique 32GB USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Elite Flash Drive".
Would be really grateful if you could help as my my current laptop is dying due to it's age and I would like to move the data over to the new laptop as soon as possible.
    Thanks,
    Becca

It would lose all data re-initialising it.
    A few options...
You could format that HDD as Fat32/MS-DOS, but you'd be limited to 4 GB Filesizes.

  • New message - "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

Time machine was working just fine with my Maxtor external hard drive, once I had reformatted it, but this morning when I was booting up I got the message, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." The message gave me the options of "initialize", "ignore", or "eject".
What gives? Why the sudden change? If I initialize, then I lose all the previous saves and defeat the purpose of Time Machine in the first place.
    Any suggestions?

Do you still have a drive with Mac OS X 10.4 installed on it? If you do, you can see if the drive mounts in 10.4. If you get the same message, it might be a problem with the drive and not be related to TM. I had a problem with an external Maxtor drive that TM corrupted, but the drive mounted without any problems. I just couldn't write to it in 10.5.
If you can mount it in Mac OS 10.4 or on another Mac, see if you can repair the drive with Disk Utility or with a program like Disk Warrior. Another option you can try is to disconnect the drive and then reconnect it. If that doesn't work, try disconnecting it and rebooting and then connecting it again.
If you can get the drive to mount, copy the TM files to another drive and then reformat the drive. See this page from Seagate/Maxtor for information on formatting the drive:

  • I purchased songs that are now reported as not authorized on this computer. When I authorize this computer I'm told it is already authorized. How can I access the 21 songs I purchased

I purchased songs that are now labeled as "not authorized on this computer" and won't be sync'd to my iPod. I then go to the store icon, click on authorize this computer and am told that it is already authorized. I have another 169 or so songs I have purchased and have no problem with those. Anyone know what might be happening? I'm not really a "technocrat" so I hope there is an easy answer.

Read the various Knowledge Base Articles on deauthorization & authorization.  One of them should solve your problem.
     Good luck!

  • I have an old account with purchased songs in it,however I have a new account now which does not allow me to listen to this purchased music.I have tried changing the password but to no avail. Please help

The problem is I have an old account from an old I-pod which is now broken.Well the I-pod has been binned.I have a new i-pod and have a new user name.I have tried to access the songs i purchased yeateryear on my old device but and this  is a but .....The new account will not allow me to access these older purchased songs. I cannot listen to them or burn them onto a cd.It throws up my old account user name in a window with a password request to access this material.I have changed my password several times however I still cannot access these purchased songs.

iPods (that are not iPod touch) are not directly linked to any "account."  They are associated with your iTunes library.  The account in iTunes is your Apple ID, which is used to purchase and download content from the iTunes Store.  It lets the iTunes Store know who you are when you sign in.
Songs that are currently sold by the iTunes Store do not use DRM (copy protection).  However, songs purchased during the earlier days of the iTunes Store do use DRM.  If you have such songs that were purchased using a previous Apple ID (not your current Apple ID), you need to authorize your computer for that previous Apple ID.
Find one of the songs that does not play due to this problem.  Right-click on it in any iTunes list, and select Get Info.  On the song's Info window Summary tab, look for Apple ID.  That is the Apple ID used to purchase this song.
From the iTunes menu bar, under Store, select Authorize This Computer.  In the dialog window that appears, enter that Apple ID used to make the old song purchases (plus password).  Do not enter your current Apple ID and password.  Click Authorize.
The computer is now authorized for BOTH your old Apple ID and your current Apple ID.

  • Tried to update iPod, failed, no new drivers installed. Now iPod does not show in my computer or in iTunes.

Anyone know how I can update/unbrick this iPod? It's useless. It's stuck on the screen that says connect to iTunes. iTunes doesn't know it's there. My computer doesn't know it's there. It's not the USB port.
Please don't direct me here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - already tried, no results.
Last time it was a missing driver for iTunes but iTunes says nothing new is needed. Help appreciated.

Let me try this again. My computer said my iPod needed an update. I clicked ok. iTunes said it was doing the update. I browsed the internet. I came back to it after it was done, and it said update failed, no new drivers installed. Now my iPod touch is a brick. I cannot use it for anything. You know that screen that shows the usb cable, a white arrow, and iTunes? It's stuck there. No amount of pushing the sleep/wake button and home button will convince it to go to any other screen. When I go to 'My Computer', it does not recognize that there is anything there. It is not the USB port. Everything was fine until the update tried and failed.
I am not installing iTunes (piece of crap software that it is) on the other computer in my apartment.
I have exhausted the articles that sort of go with the problems I am having. They all assume a non brick iPod. Mine is a brick and therefore those articles, including the one you linked, are not relevant.
Not meaning to be rude, but I came into this not caring much for Apple's business model. I've had my iPod for .. a week? Maybe two, and nothing I've seen has convinced me to feel otherwise. Apple's products are supposed to just work. I am not finding that to be the case. Anyone with anything helpful please?

    Hello people.
I cryied long enough, browsing the Internet looking forward to a solution for the same case you are stating here. That said, I do not want you to suffer any longer the way I did if you run out of solutions...
In my case, I was trying to copy images from my SD-HC 2 memory card (San Disk, 8GB) to my computer (Mac). I was using a chinese memory card reader (Kino, "Mini Multi in One memory card reader", model SY-682, USB 2.0). The memory card reader/hub used to work just fine before, but till recently it didn't...
I had a suspicion on my OS updating, since I used to copy images from this SD Card to my computer on a monthly basis (I used to have Mac OSX 10.6.8, and a technician recently changed my Mac's operating system to 10.7.5 or so, as far as I can detail... It wasn't a god job what he did, but anyway)...
My husband saw me crying in front of the computer after reading and chasing to a lot of Google searches, and what he did was simply this:
I used to put the memory card in the reader, and then plug the reader into the Mac's USB port... And it didn't work... Right?
He, instead, did it backwards: he plugged the memory card reader to the Mac's USB port and THEN slide the memory card into the slot of the memory card reader...
By doing this, you do not get to see the image of the memory card in your Mac's desktop, BUT: if you open a new Finder window, you will see the image of the memory card into the left margin of the window, right behind the "Devices" title... In my case, the memory card image just read "EOS_DIGITAL", as I use to take pictures with a Canon EOS camera...
Anyway, I hope this helps, and please replicate this answer to those in the same suffering I used to be till 15 minutes before.
    Good luck.

  • New version of itunes does not install

The new version of Itunes does not install on my computer. I have run all of the service steps from the knowledge base and there has been no change. I am running win 7 64 bit on an alienware m17x. can I get some help? I have my dxdiag if it will help.
The last version of itunes (what I believe to be the first 64 bit one) , the textures were not always correct but it still functioned. This new one doesn't even install and as a troubleshooting thing I unistalled itunes and quickime as well as clearing the temp files and running the instaler with no 3rd party programs on startup, so now I have no itunes. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, no response, I guess this must be too hard a problem to solve
Is this because XP is not officially supported any more??
People who have problems installing on Vista seem to get a response!!
I think that I will just keep the version of itunes that I currently have installed as, judging by the people on this forum who have problems with the new version, I am probably better off not upgrading anyway.

  • TS3999 icalendar does not work on my PC, it continues to get an error message.  It worked before and now it does not anymore

Icalendar no longer works on the PC that I am using.  It did in the past and now it does not.  Coincidentally, this happened after my iphone was stolen and it was replaced with the iphone 5s.  Does it have to do with my settings?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

Ouch.  I am afriad the news is not good.  If there is no longer a working firmware instance on ATV there is nothing you can do.  That's why it has that message about not unplugging it during the update.
Nothing happens when you plug it in?
