Account Corruption - Mail Restore

Hi
I cant log in as my primary account on my mac - either normally or in Safe mode.
Mercifully, I had put a spare admin account on the machine so I can access all my folders and files - Phew
Is there a way to take my old mail folder and import it into a new account?

yes, but you should try fixing your original account first. what happens when you try to log into your main account? does it reject the password? or does it try to log in but fails and kicks you back to the login window? the latter can be caused by system cache problems. try this suggestion by kappy

Apple mail crashes on start-up: user account corrupt?

Hi
I have installed all the latest software updates, but my Mail keeps crashing. I have cleaned (reset) plist and emptied and cleaned the address book, but the problem persists. I have created a new user account and Mail works fine for that account. I think that I have a corrupt user account. Is there anyway to clean a user account without losing all my doc's etc?

When I try to set up e-mail accounts the mail settings icon goes back to main screen. I have tried restoring and the same thing happens.

I have a new ipad2 3G and have a vodafone sim. Internet is working, but when I try to follow instructions to set up e-mail accounts (Settings/Mail Settings) it pops back to the main menu screen. I have restored and checked that restrictions are set to off, but still the same thing happens.

If you selected open a new Apple ID account, go back a step and enter use existing Apple ID.
You will have to set up a separate iCloud account or your iPads will mirror each other.

Restoring Me, POP and SMTP accounts in Mail after issue

After unexpected power-off, when 10.5 restarted, Mail give me
message for restoring message database.
After some times (I have a lot of mailboxes and mails during past 3 years),
Mail started BUT I SEE ONLY my MAC/ME accounts, but NOT all my
other POP/IMAP account.
As I see, all account's folders are still in /Library/Mail/, for example

[email protected]
But tis accounts (and mails within) still not visible inside Mail.
*How to restore this accounts in Mail ?*
I try to reset settings from MobileMe (I have family pack), but
unsuccessful - no any POP/IMAP accounts added...

you need to restore the mail preference file. do you have a backup? if so quit mail and restore the file home directory/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from the backup. if you don't have a backup recreate all your email accounts in Mail and they will recognize their existing mailboxes once recreated. and start backing up.

Can't add new account in mail Preferences

When I attempt to add a new account in Mail preferences the + sign does not function. Another strange symptom is that MAILl will not quit, and I must force quit from the Apple menu. AND, the account that does appear in the account window appears in broken type and although the information is correct, no In, out junk or drafts appear. Obviously there is major corruption. I've fixed the permissions and done the obvious things. It sounds like my program may be corrupt. What caused this, is that I had to reinstall Tiger on another drive in my G5 when my original version lost its users and I couldn't boot up. Mail still works fine on my newer Intel MAC. I know it has a different version of MAIL but is there a way to use its settings and/or caches,prefs and data? Unfortunately my copy of Tiger is on multiple CD's and I don't get the option of what to install..it's all or nothing.

I tried your routine twice, but unfortunately the same situation. Interestingly, there was no no Mail in the Cache folder. What did happen, after the first Safe Boot is that MobileMe sync sent me a message that it wanted to change a couple of Mail accounts which I allowed(I have a MobileMe account and my wife has a mail only account). When I looked in the Mail preferences both accounts had the cracked type although the account info was correct. When I restarted both accounts were missing and a different titled (but with correct info) appeared. Any other ideas? Would installing Leopard help, do you think?

Does deleting yahoo mail account in system prefs and recreating it as Add Other Account lose mail data?

Having trouble getting Notes from iMac to sync with iPad and iPhone. On iPad and iPhone I deleted Yahoo mail account in prefs and recreated it as Add Other Account. This restored Notes that had not been showing up. Can I do the same thing on my iMac?

I'd add the new account first, unless you can lose all your eMails in that account.

Cannot activate new account in Mail, random misfuncioning. Reinstall Mail?

I am not able to activate a new POP account in Mail (I already have 1 POP and 1 .Mac active accounts). Other Mac with identical software has no problem at all....!
Maybe too many emails, or just the Mail software is corrupted.
Do I need to reinstall Mail? How to do it without loosing precious emails in memory?

I'm having the same problem at work. I'm starting to suspect it is an issue with 10.4.8.
Up until yesterday I could start new accounts, but they couldn't receive mail. Today I can't install a new account at all.
I can set up Exchange accounts, however, through Mail.
What exactly happens when you try to activate the POP account.

I accidentally deleted my 1&1 account in mail and inbox / sent items lost

Can anyone help please? I have transferred my domain name from 1&1 to godaddy today and the domain transfer has been successful but in the process of trying to set up my Mail account I inadvertently deleted the old 1&1 account from Mail preferences. I didn't think that this would be a problem as all of the emails must be stored on my hard drive once they had been delivered to Mail, but when the 1&1 account had been deleted I lost all emails from my inbox, sent items and deleted items. The personal folders that I have created to store emails in are all still there, but I am very worried that I have lost all of my sent items and all of the items in my inbox that were awaiting replies.
I have looked on here and people refer to going to Library and then Mail folder, but I don't have a mail folder. I do have Time Machine so any recommendations where I can back up on would be appreciated.
1&1 have said that I can transfer my MX records back to them to restore my mail and then transfer them back to godaddy, but I have been waiting for 12 hours from the original transfer to take place and it still hasn't happened and I can't afford another day without being able to send or receive any emails.
I would also like to know how to ensure that i have a back up of my existing mail to make sure that i don't loose any more.
Any advice greatly appreciated. :-)

Was this a POP account, and where is your backup?
From now on use Time Machine to backup your Mac, for Mail you can also (not instead of) export any or all mailboxes to the desktop by rightclicking on the mailbox and choosing Export.

Exchange Account in Mail - lot's of email don't show up

I have some confusing experiences Mail with my exchange email account (hosted as an exchange account by the German hosting Provider 1&1) - which worked fine for a long time.
Recently I experienced the following effects:
Email don't show. They are not lost. If I use a web browser to access my account with the Outlook Web App, all email are there. Mail shows always the most recent emails (from about one month) but not more.
If I switch between different email accounts in Mail (I also manage imap accounts and my .me account in Mail) and then back to the exchange account all or most email don't show anymore. If I close and reopen Mail the most recent emails show up again.
It's not a matter of disk space (about 400 GB free), I did the usual stuff like disk repair and check permissions.
I'm thankful for any ideas.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Switching between accounts in Mail 6.0

Hi there. Is there a gesture that allows me to switch between accounts in Mail 6.0, instead of viewing an account by clicking the inbox button. Sparrow use to do this but gesture have been disabled since lion. Does any one know how to restore these gestures in sparrow as well? I just upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. Thanks!

You can't do that. Sparrow was bought by Google and it won't be updated for get new features

Complete Mail Restore needed

I'm visiting my parents for the week, and decided to give my Mom's old 2010 Macbook Pro a fresh start. It was running horribly slowly. A clean install, to wipe out all the cruft, had never been done, so I figured I'd try that. I also took the opportunity to upgrade her 160GB HDD to a 500GB Seagate SSD / HD hybrid. So I did full backups with Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner (just for good measure). Then did a clean install of Mavericks (she was on Mavericks before) and copied her data back manually and set up the few programs she uses.
However, one of her accounts in Mail uses server settings I don't have access to. So I haven't been able to set that up on my own. I tried copying the Mail folder over verbatim from ~/Library/Mail from the backup. But it's still not working. Mail prompts me to enter the password, and even though I've verified it's the correct one, it still doesn't work.
Any advice to do a complete restore of the Mail program with accounts, server settings, etc, without having to do a full Time Machine restore and all the junk that would bring with it???

I would probably delete the account from Mail, restart, and then enter it again.

How do i create more than one account in Mail with the same isp?

I am using suddenlink and have set up one account for Mail. It seems to work ok. I want to set up two others with the same provider but can't.
Let's call the first account, account1
It works.
I set up another and call it account2.
It is using the same provider which already has the account set up on their end, but how do I set it up to work on my end? Does it need to use the same username as account1 or can it use the user name for account2? I hope this makes sense.

Initially you need to configure via the provider's own web based control panel multiple e-mail accounts. If they don't have one, work it out with their customer support to have three distinct mail accounts. Then you can setup multiple logins by adding new accounts to mail. Since mail checks all accounts per Mac OS X user account simultaneously, it probably is best to use different usernames on the same internet provider. If you don't want mail to show all the information from all three mail accounts simultaneously, configure Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts to have multiple users on your computer, and configure each of the internet service provider accounts for each separaet user on Mac OS X.

Unable to create new email from Gmail account in Mail

I just installed gmail to retrieve messages within Mail: I can receive gmail messages and reply to gmail from Mail. However, I cannot create and send a new message in Mail using my gmail account; when I do I get the following error message:
Enter Password for Account
smtp.gmail.com:xxxx[account name]
The SMTP server "smtp.gmail.com" rejected the password for user "xxx[account name]"
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
No matter how many times I add it correctly and click OK, the same message returns.

That is what I used to set up my gmail account in Apples Mail App before your post. Those instructions say that when you click on the Advanced Tab that the port will switch to 995 - which it did for me. I do have a minor problem though. Is there any way to prevent emails sent from Mail via gmail from showing up in gmails web page? I don't really like web mail whatsoever!

Why can I no longer send email from my Hotmail SMTP account using Mail?

I can no longer send email from my Hotmail SMTP account using Mail. The connection doctor says it can't connect to the SMTP server. All the settings look to be correct and it was working fine before. I can still email using my iPhone with the same account.

Other may post it is some type of change with your ISP but the simple fact is this happen with Apple Mac Mail all the time.
IMHO Mac Mail is one of, if not the, worst mail program ever written.
Do yourself a big favor and start using some other mail program, any other Mail program.

Mail Accounts in Mail

I had to re-establish one of my e-maila accounts in Mail and I can't see any messages. It shows me how many messages are unread in the left panel, but no messages are displayed in the main window. Can someone suggest a fix?

If you deleted the account in Mail in order to re-create it, you deleted all messages in account mailboxes. If the account was a POP account, those messages are probably not still on the server, but you can be sure by selecting the account, pressing command-i and seeing what messages are reported as being on the server. If the account was IMAP, then the messages should all still be on the server. You may simply need to force the account to sync (Mailbox -> Synchronize All Accounts).
If the messages are gone, do you have any backups?
