Account doesn't show up in system preferences

In an attempt to override my master password, I started my computer in single user mode, typed /sh/mount -uw / and passwd, and then entered a new password. However, this created a new account called System Administrator on my computer that shows up in the login menu as "Other…". I want to delete this account, but when I log in to my usual account, the System Administrator account doesn't show up in System Preferences. Can anyone tell me how to delete this account?
(Btw, any tips on how to find out what the password is for the root user would be helpful. From my normal account, the new password I entered doesn't work for root, although it does in the System Administrator account.)
Thank you!

Hoping that we are on the same page., but sounds like what you did was enable the root user.
Its a user that will not be seen in system preferences and should never be gotten rid of (its great for troubleshooting).
The root user or (system administrator) is different from a User account with Administrator access.

  • Trying to get Icloud on my Macbook and it doesn't show up in System Preferences

I have downloaded the latest update and Icloud still doesn't show up in my System preferences. I would contact apple but it's $59 just to chat to a technician online and I was hoping someone here could help me.

You need to upgrade the computer's OS to get that pane.
Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Mavericks. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • App doesn't show up in System Preferences after Installation

    Hi -
    I've been trying to install a Wireless-G USB Adapter on a G3
and is is supposed to show up in the System Preferences,
but after the installation is complete, it's not there.
    Can anyone help???
    Thanks...

The guide that came with the adapter says it's for OSX - OS10.3, and I'm running 10.2 - The adapter is a Hawking HWL2A for Apple users, and I was told it would work on my G3.
I understand that my USB is only 1.1, but does that affect the installer?
Would you recommend me to just obtain the original airport card & adapter?
    Thanks for your help...

  • Windows 7 Boot Camp partition doesn't show in the System Preferences.

    Hi,
I'm running an up to date 10.6.2 on my OS X partition and Windows 7 x64 on my boot camp partition. When I looked at the start up disk preference pane the windows 7 installation didn't show. Is this normal? 32bit XP always showed in the past. If not, what should I do to fix it? I know that I can boot into windows by holding down the alt key on boot but I would like to know this is working correctly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that you have a good install of the Apple drivers (boot camp 3.x) in Windows and that Boot Camp Control Panel there works so that you can set the default OS to either, and that it works.
But yes, someone else mentioned the same problem or bug.
The only cause I've seen in the past was where Mac OS X had an NTFS driver and control panel (Paragon, MacFUSE, etc) and you had to use their control panel in OS X.

  • How do I get the Airplay Icon to show on the System Preferences of my MacBook Pro?

How do I get the Airplay Icon to show on the System Preferences of my MacBook Pro? I want to be able to connect to my AppleTV.

I looked at that already. I've done everything it says: check to make sure wireless is working, make sure airplay is enabled, make sure device and apple tv are on the same network blah blah. The icon just isn't there. Unless I skipped a step. AirPlay works when I use it in the music app and in the video app, I jus can't get mirroring to work. I was looking at some other threads and mirroring doesn't seem to be working for a lot of people. Maybe I jus have to wait for an update =\

  • Printer shows up in System Preferences, Says Ready, but nothing prints

Hi, I migrated successfully last week from a G5 to a MacPro. My printer was working up until yesterday. It is an epson stylus photo 1400, connected by usb. I downloaded a new driver from Epson, but still can't make it work. Have run Tech Tool Pro, reloaded software several times. Printer shows up in system preferences window, and when I go to print it appears to be working, but then disappears from the list and never prints. Have been checking posts, but not finding an answer. Please help if you can. Thanks, S

Not knowing how you mucked things up when you locked yourself out or what you used with BatChnod, resolving things can be an issue. Check See Niel's guide. and ensure you've done things correctly. If resetting things appropriately doesn't do the trick, reinstall Snow Leopard, run Software Update, repair permissions, and restart.

  • Is my external monitor supposed to show up in system preferences?

I called LG because my LG monitor keeps getting stuck in 'Power Saving Mode' and the LG customer service rep said it's because my MacBook isn't recognizing the monitor.  He said that the external monitor is supposed to show up in system preferences when it is plugged in.  Is that correct?

It should show up in the System Preferences, Displays preference pane.

  • Why does Windows 7 not show up in System Preference's "Startup Disk"

Why does Windows 7, installed via Boot Camp, show up when you hold down the option key when booting but the drive does not show up in System Preferences under the Startup Disk icon.
As an aside Windows 7 runs perfectly on my MacBook.
    - Mike

Now I found I'm not alone. My situation is similar but not exactly the same.
I recently switched from the white MacBook to latest mac mini, tried installing XP Pro not successful for some reasons then tried Win7 (build 7000). On my old macbook this worked perfectly.
Got win7 updated and picked win7 as startup disk in windows, used that for few days without going back to leopard. On just one occasion I booted with 'alt' key pressed (using a PC keyboard) I have choices of drives so I thought everything was fine. As soon as I booted into leopard I found no win7 partition in system>preference>startup disk, OMG I couldn't boot back to win7 since then. From that point onwards the 'alt' key didn't work for me. Every time only leopard can be booted.
    What can I do now?
Why it was OK in macbook but didn't work on mini? Is it worth investing on a mac external keyboard just to get the 'option' key?

  • HT204053 My Macbook doesn't have iCloud under System Preferences.  How do I add it?

My MacBook doesn't have iCloud under System Preferences.. Why?  How can I add it?

Only by upgrading to Lion 10.7.2 - provided your Mac meets the requirements -
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
LIon is obtained from the Mac App Store, which you need 10.6.8 to access.

  • HT4796 "Mail Accounts" doesn't show up as option to choose to migrate from XP

I am attempting to migrate files from a WinXP computer to a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. Almost all files transferred successfully, but it doesn't appear that the Outlook email transferred. In fact "Mail Accounts" doesn't show up as an option to choose in the migration screen. I have done the migration successfully to three other computers, but they were running Lion. Any ideas?

Try rebooting the device. It should be in Settings right under General. You may need to go to Settings<General<Reset<Reset All Settings (don't erase data) and setup as a new device. The iCloud login should appear during this step. Just keep setting it up, then go back to settings and see if the iCloud tab appears.

  • New Superdrive doesn't show up in System Profiler

My old superdrive died on me, so I ordered a new one from powerbookmedic.com.
After installing, it doesn't show up in System Profiler. I've quadruple-checked the connection and I can hear it make regular healthy sounds when booting up so I know it's getting power but once I'm inside OSX; nothing.
I tried resetting the PRAM and SCM as recommended on this forum for various superdrive trouble. Although it didn't change anything and I'm guessing don't apply here.
Any tips for getting OSX to recognize my drive?

    It's equipped with a SATA drive - that's why.
Just take a look further down ..

  • I have iwork on two computers, but my account doesn't show record of it for my being able to reinstall on the new computer.  Is there a time limit?  I tried airdrop, but it won't let me use it.

I have iwork on two computers, but my account doesn't show record of it for my being able to reinstall on the new computer.  Is there a time limit?  I tried airdrop, but it won't let me use it.

Sounds like you installed iWork from before there was the Mac App Store.
If you installed it from a Family DVD you are entitled to install that on 5 computers and can do that from the DVD.
If not then you need to purchase it from the M.A.S. and will be able to install it on any of your computers using the same Apple I.D. However Apple is promising a new version before Christmas so it may not be a good time to buy now.

  • ICloud isn't showing up in system preferences

My mac is completely up to date I've checked 5 times. Icloud isn't showing up in system preferences and when I click on mail, contacts and calendars it just shows a window with nothing in it. Did I disable something??? Please help

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iCloud requires OS X Lion or later, so it's normal that you can't use iCloud in your MacBook Pro. You have to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, and your computer is supported, so you can purchase it in the Mac App Store if you want. Make a backup of your files and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
You have to turn on Find my iPhone on your iPhone in order to be able to track it. It means that you can't track it, so report that to the police and wait until they can find your device, if it's found. I'm sorry I can't do anything else

  • MacBook Pro 6,2 Existing scanners do not show up in System Preferences

I have a MacBook Pro 6,2 and I just installed OS X Yosemite. While attached to my home network (wired), neither of my scanners show up when I try to add them in System Preferences. Also, they do not show up in the Hardware list in a System Information report. One is an Epson V600 and the other is an HP ScanJet 5590. Both of them work just fine on my MacPro 4,1 running OS X 10.8.5, although, oddly, the HP doesn't seem to have a scanner queue even though it works just as it should (scanning with Acrobat Pro).
Why are these devices absent from the "add printer or scanner" list and how do I force my MacBook Pro to see them?

    Welcome to the forum.
How did you name your comps and your AE project(s)?  If you used numbers at the beginning or the end, that may be interfering with AE's Increment and Save feature.  Try renaming your comps and projects without using numbers.
