Account Name Transition - Best Practices

Hey all.
I am about to upgrade my dual proc G5 from 10.4 to 10.5. I have a legacy account which I wish to change the login for, short name, as I've moved our home systems to a new (better, I hope!) naming convention. My plan for the upgrade is an "Erase and Install" followed by transfer of my old install data via the Setup Assistant (I have several bootable Carbon Copy Clones of the my original drive).
However, it strikes me that this is an excellent time to change my login, short name. The question becomes, what's the best practice for doing so?
I've been reading about DanKrakes "ChangeShortName" script which doesn't yet work under 10.5 (Leopard). But then there's the idea of just making a new user on my fresh install of 10.5 and moving my old home directory into the new user space. Problem with that is that the UID probably won't be the same.
Fortunately, I don't do that much complex. My keychain is pretty empty and the most "linked" item I know of is probably my Palm stuff (Palm desktop upgraded to The Missing Sync) and my iTunes (no purchases, just a lot of media).
My thinking is this:
1.) On my 10.4 install, run the "ChangeShortName" script and change the short name.
2.) Do a fresh back up of home directory and do two more clones of my 10.4 install.
3.) Run the "Erase and Install" from the 10.5 DVD and then do the transfer of files via the Setup Assistant.
Does that seem to make sense? Any "gotchas" to look out for? Anything I'm forgetting?
thxs much in advance!

POST: Hope this is a good place to post this note. Sorta crosses a few boundaries so please let me know if this is not the case!

Sounds like a good plan. For details on the various install options,

  • Accounts Receivable Analysis Best Practice: Company Code

    Hi!
I implemented SAP Best Practice scenario "Accounts Receivable Analysis" and would like to execute the queries from this example.
The query cannot unfortunately because one of the attributes Company Code is mandatory.
When I put one of the possible values e.g. "0001" I get the following error:
Company Code (Single Value Entry, Required) ()*
Value "0001" for variable "Company Code (Single Value Entry, Required)" is invalid
    Message no. BRAIN643
    Diagnosis
Characteristic value "0001" is not valid for variable Company Code (Single Value Entry, Required).
    Procedure
Enter a valid value for the characteristic. The value help, for example, provides you with suggestions. If no information is available here, then perhaps no characteristic values exist for the characteristic.
If the variable for  0DATE or 0CALDAY has been created and is being used as a key date for a hierarchy, check whether the hierarchies used are valid for this characteristic. The same is valid for variables that refer to the hierarchy version.
    Question
    How to execute this query?
    Thank you very much!

    Hi!
    Many thanks for your response.
What do you mean with your question?
I load transaction data with tcode RSA1
    (0FI_AR_4 and  0FI_AR_6).
Do I need some addtional steps to execute? IF yes, which?
    Thank you very much!

  • Best practice for multiple email accounts

    Hello
I have set up a Mac mini server with virtual hosts. So, how is the best practice to set up email accounts for each host? I want to have emails like
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    and
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    and so on.
Should I create groups for each domain, and then user "info" and "contact" in each group. Or just add a user something like "infomysite1" and have a second short name "[email protected]"
    Advices are welcome
    Best regards, Magnus

If user1@domain1 and user1@domain2 are the same person then you just add the other domain to Hosting-> Local Host Aliases. Same user will get all mail for both domains.
However, I'm presuming that the user1@domain1 and user1@domain2 are two separate people (i.e., same name but different mail account). If so...
See Chapter: A Mail Service Virtual Host in Apple's Mail Services Administration PDF download at http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/documentation.html
Also, see MakingVirtual_Mail_Users_in_OS_XServer.pdf from http://osx.topicdesk.com (downloads sections)
The topicdesk pdf was written for 10.5 server but I think it is still applicable to 10.6 (but follow the Apple doc just in case). However, it is good for explaining why you might want postfix-style aliases rather than the simpler Apple server-style aliases.

  • SQL 2012 service accounts best practice

I'm installing SQL Server 2012 for ConfigMgr 2012 r2 and I wonder what is the best practice for SQL service accounts.
During the installation of SQL Server, in the server configuration/Service accounts menu I'm allowed to configure following service accounts: SQL Server Agent, SQL Server Agent Database Engine, SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Browser.
Do I have to create separate domain user (not admin) accounts for each service and configure service principal name (SPN) for all of them?
For example: Domain user account named SQLSA for SQL Server Agent, another domain user account
SQLADBE for SQL Server Agent Database Engine etc.

During the installation of SQL Server 2012, the user is prompted to provide service account
credentials. The default service accounts suggested vary depending on whether SQL Server
2012 is installed on a computer running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 or on a computer
running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. On computers running Windows Vista
or Windows Server 2008 operating systems, the following default service accounts are used:
    - NETWORK SERVICE Database Engine, SQL Server Agent, Analysis Services,
Integration Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server Distributed Replay Controller,
    SQL Server Distributed Replay Client
    - LOCAL SERVICE SQL Server Browser, FD Launcher (Full-Text Search)
    - LOCAL SYSTEM SQL Server VSS Writer
On computers running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems, the following
    default accounts are used:
    - Virtual Account or Managed Service Account Database Engine, SQL Server Agent,
Analysis Services, Integration Services, Replication Services, SQL Server Distributed
Replay Controller, SQL Server Distributed Replay Client, FD Launcher (Full-Text Search)
    - LOCAL SERVICE SQL Server Browser
    - LOCAL SYSTEM SQL Server VSS Writer
For Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, you can use a Managed Service Account
(MSA) or a Managed Local Account. The differences between these account types are as
    follows:
    - Managed Service Account (MSA) This special kind of domain account managed
by a domain controller is assigned to a single member computer and used for running
services. The MSA password is managed by the domain controller. MSAs can register
a Service Principal Name (SPN) with Active Directory. MSAs use a $ name suffix; for
example, CONTOSO\SQL-A-MSA$. You must create the MSA prior to running SQL
Server Setup if you want to use an MSA with SQL Server services.
    - Virtual Accounts or Managed Local Accounts These virtual accounts can access
the network in a domain environment and are used by default for service accounts
during SQL Server 2012 setup when run on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
Such accounts use the NT SERVICE\<SERVICENAME>format. You don’t need to specify
a password when using virtual accounts with SQL Server 2012 because this is handled
    automatically by the operating system.
You should run SQL Server services, using the minimum possible user rights, and use an
MSA or virtual account when possible. If you are manually configuring service accounts, use
separate accounts for different SQL Server services. If it is necessary to change the properties
of service accounts used for SQL Server 2012, use SQL Server tools such as SQL Server
Configuration Manager. This ensures that all necessary dependencies are
updated, which does not happen if you use only the Services console.
Although you can configure domain accounts as service accounts, this strategy requires
more effort because you must ensure that service account passwords are changed regularly.
You must also manage SPNs, which are required for Kerberos authentication.

  • User Account Authentication across multiple Solaris servers - Best Practice

    Hi,
I am new to Solaris admin and would like to know the best practice/setup for authenticating user accounts across multiple solaris servers.
Currently we have 20 - 30 Solaris 8 & 10 servers which each have their own user accounts setup. I am planning to replace these with a similar number of Solaris 10 servers and would like to centralise the user accounts and their authentication.
I would be grateful for any suggestions on the best setup and any links to tutorials.
    Thanks
    Jools

i would suggest LDAP + kerberos, LDAP for name lookups and krb5 for auth. provides secure auth + extensable directory for users and other apps if needed. plus, it provides a decent spring board to add other unix plats into the mix since this will support any unix/linux/bsd plat. you could integrate this design with a windows AD env if you want as well.
    [http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/kerberos_s10.jsp] sol + ldap+ AD
    [http://docs.lucidinteractive.ca/index.php/Solaris_LDAP_client_with_OpenLDAP_server] sol + ldap (openldap)
    [http://aput.net/~jheiss/krbldap/howto.html] sol + ldap + krb5
now these links are all using some diff means, however they should give you some ideas as to whats out there. sol 10 comes with suns ldap server and you can use the krb5 server which comes with it as well. many many diff ways to do this. many many more links out there as welll. these are just a few.

  • Best Practice, naming conventions and Ownership of accounts NEWBIE

Hi Guru's please be gentle with me, I'm a sales manager in the UK and have been asked to check for best practices in naming accounts and who should own accounts in CRM 2011?For example I have Accounts with several sites and many contacts? How should I name
these and who should own these? The office manager or the sales account manager that handles sales directly?
Please help, I'm getting stressed. I think these are very simple for such a bunch of super gurus...

    Hello iBrummie,
Regarding the Accounts and their sites, you can always use accounts and sub-accounts. To achieve this you should create the main Account in CRM and afterwards you can create the sites using the account entity as well and afterwards linking them with the
main account using the "Parent Account" lookup field.
About the ownership, CRM's security model works essentially with:
    Business Units
    Teams
    Users
    Security Roles
This depends entirely on the way your company works but what I would do (assuming that the accounts information is shareable in your company) is to make the sales accounts the owners of the records and provide read/write access at a business unit level to
    the office managers.
Here is some more info on the matter:
Security concepts for Microsoft Dynamics CRM
How role-based security can be used to control access to entities in Microsoft Dynamics CRM

  • Best Practices to update Cascading Picklist mapping for Account record type

    1. Most of the existing picklist values name in parent and related picklist has been modified in external app master list, so the same needs to be updated in CRMOD.
    2. If we need to update picklist value, do we need to DISABLE the existing value and CREATE a new picklist.
    3. Is there any Best Practices to avoid doing Manual Cascading picklist mapping for Account record type? because we have around 500 picklist values to be mapped with parent and related picklist.
    Thanks!

Mahesh, I would recommend disabling the existing values and create new ones. This means manually remapping the cascading picklists.

  • Best practice for searching on surname/lastname/name in Dutch

I'm looking for a best practice to store names of persons, but also names of companies, in my database.
I always store them as is (seems logical since you need to be able to display the original input-name) but I also want to store them transformed in some sort of way so I can easily search on them with LIKE! (Soundex, Metaphone, Q-Gram, ...)
I know SOUNDEX and DIFFERENCE are included in SQLServer, but they don't do the trick.
If somebody searches for the phrase "BAKKER", you should find names like "Backer", "Bakker", ... but also "De Backer", "Debecker", ... and this is where SOUNDEX fails ...
Does someone know some websites to visit, or someone already wrote a good function to transform a string that I can use to store the names but also to transform my search data?
    (Example:  (Pseudo lang :-))
    function MakeSearchable (sString)
      sString = sString.Replace(" ", ""); //Remove spaces
      sString = sString.Replace("CK", "K");
      sString = sString.Replace("KK", "K");
      sString = sString.Replace("C", "S");
      sString = sString.Replace("SS", "S");
      return sString;

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately the provided links are not much help:
    - The first link is about an article I don't have access to (i'm not a registered user)
    - The second link is about Integration Services. This is nice for Integration stuff, but I need to have a functionality within a frontend.
    - The third link is for use in Excel.
Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing when wanting to create an extra column with "cleaned" up data. Maybe there's another solution from within my frontend or business layer, but I simply want a textbox on a form where users can type a search-value like
"BAKKER". The result of the search should return names like "DEBACKER", "DE BEKKER", "BACKER", "BAKRE", ...
I used to work in a hospital where they wrote their own SQL-function (on an Interbase database) to do this: They had a column with the original name, and a column with a converted name:
    => DEBACKER => Converted = DEBAKKER
    => DE BEKKER => Converted = DEBEKKER
    => BACKER => Converted = BAKKER
    => BAKRE => Converted = BAKKER
When you searched for "BAKKER", you did a LIKE operation on the converted column ...
What I am looking for is a good function to convert my data as above.

    Tim

  • Best Practice : how 2 fetch tables, views, ... names and schema

    hi,
I am looking for the best practice about getting the catalog of a database.
I have seen that I can make some select in system-tables(or views) such as DBA_TABLES and DBA_VIEWS, or DBA_CATALOG, but is that the best way to grab thses informations ?
(I ask this question because It seems a strange way to me to get the table names using a simple select, but getting column info using a specialized function, OCIDescribeAny(). this does not look like a coherent API...)
    thanks for your advice

in the same idea, why use OCIDescribeAny instead of doing an appropriate select in DBA_TAB_COLUMNS ?

  • Office Web Apps - Best Practice for App Pool Security Account?

    Guys,
I am finalising my testing of Office Web Apps, and ready to move onto deploying it to my live farm.
Generally speaking, I put service applications in their own application pool.
Obviously by doing so this has an overhead on memory and processing, however generally speaking it is best practice from a security perspective when using separate accounts.
I have to create 3 new service applications in order to deploy Office Web Apps, in my test environment these are using the Default SharePoint app pool.
Should I create one application pool for all my office web apps with a fresh service account, or does it make no odds from a security perspective to run them in the default app pool?
    Cheers,
    Conrad
    Conrad Goodman MCITP SA / MCTS: WSS3.0 + MOSS2007

i run my OWA under it's own service account (spOWA) and use only one app pool.  Just remember that if you go this route, "When
you create a new application pool, you can specify a security account used by the application pool to be either a predefined Network Service account or a managed account. The account must have db_datareader, db_datawriter, and execute permissions for the content
databases and the SharePoint configuration database, and be assigned to the db_owner role for the content databases." (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff431687.aspx)

  • Manage vendor bank account in company code level - Best practice

    hi,
we have on our client several company codes, and we are thinking how to manage the vendor bank accounts in company codes level or in centeral level.
our problem with company codes level is that the vendor bank accounts define in a centeral level so technically with sap standard it is not possible. if anyone can tell me that this is possible i will be very happy to know.
in centeral level our problem is with the business process because of we do not have a person (functionalism ) that can be responsible for all the company codes, basically every company shoule be responsible for her vendors
please advice what is the best practice to manage vendor bank accounts in enviroment of several company code
    regards,
    meir

    hi Raghu,
i know that but this is not my qusition.
which company code will be responsible to enter the bank account in the vendor master data? as i say the vendor bank accounts manage in centeral level and not in company code level and this is our problem and i like to know how other companies with the same situation handle with this issue
and also after we have the bank accounts in the vendor master data what happend if for one vendor has several bank accounts one for every company code? how the payment program F110 could know automaticaly which bank account to take (i know that there is an optoin to use Partner bank type in the vendor master data, and enter this PBT when posting the invoice of the vednor, but this is not good because of we do not want the the accountant will be responsible from which bank the vendor get his money).
    regards,

  • Best Practice for Multiple iTunes and One Account?

My wife and I share our account for our iPhone Applications and Songs in iTunes.
Can someone point me to a topic that covers a best practice for multiple iTunes syncing?
I travel a lot and keep my iPhone synced to my Macbook Pro while she uses the workstation at home to sync to. We keep the addresses and contacts and calendars synced through MobileMe, however, I'm trying to find the best way of pushing applications and songs I've bought over to the other PC so they're still around while I'm traveling for her to sync with.
    Thoughts?

    Hi Steve,
Might be trying for solution for a long time, If i understood your question clear let me clarify you few points.
You are trying to access the bex query which is designed with the exit's in the background based on the logic and trying to call the entire dimensions and key-figures in a single connection. Then you are trying to map those data in the charts.
Steve, try to make more connections based upon the logic and split them. use the same query but split them by sales per customer group, sales per day, sales per week by making three different connections and try. You can merge the prompts from all connections.
    Hope this Helps!!!
Sorry if i misunderstood your question.

  • Best practice on how to handle employees who do not have a last name?

We are a Canadian based company with some International employees. We have recently begun to enter the International employees into the HR module. This has led to some problems for employees from India who do not have both a first name and a last name as many of our downstream systems require both names.
I'm wondering what other companies with International employees have done in this circumstance. Can someone recommend a Best Practice?  We want to ensure that whatever we do is not offensive to anyone.
    Thanks.

    Dear,
Indian names vary from region to region. Sometimes Names also influence by religion and caste. Different languages spoken in India in different regions. This variety makes confusing differences in names and their styles.
Now come to the point, since you are international company, while entering the names of your international employees - i would like to suggest to consider the employees names as mentioned in their passport (If they hold valid passport). In case of non availability of passports consider their bank information or any other available information so that they didnt face any further problems like visa, banking transactions etc etc.
    1. Maddepalli Venkata Ramana Rao
In this case Maddepalli will be his surname, Venkata Ramana can be his first name and Rao can be mentioned as Second / last name.
    2. Hardev Singh
In this case you didnt find a surname... Singh will be considered as Surname or his ethinic recognition. In this case you can enter Hardev as First name and Singh as last name.
Make some entry fields are optional depending on the situation. Take help of an Indian origin employees help exists in your office.

  • Best Practice for legally required Chart of Account

    Dear all,
our client has a global defined chart of account. Now they are going to implement the SAP template in France, Belgium and Russia. These countries have legally required chart of accounts. What is best practice to fullfill these requirements in SAP.
    1) Do I use the alternative account number?
    2) Isn't this field on the central level of the account master data record? How do I manage to realize the different number for Russia and for France at the same time?
Thank you very much for your help.
    Best regards Timo

    Hi,
the best way proofed by real life is to define new chart of accounts for the country specific accounts. Then to assign this chart of accounts as country chart of accounts in company code parameters.
Then you can use field alternative account number in company code segment of G/L accounts.
Just keep in mind that the assigment should be 1:1, i.e. one operative (global) account is assigned to one local account and one local account should be assigned to one operative account.
You can't change the alternative account number if there is balance on that account. You can just repost the balance to another account, then change alternative acccount number and then post the balance back. For some accounts its difficult to do such excercise so I use short ABAP which changes directly the field in table SKB1.
You can also define financial statement strucutre based on local chart of accounts - which is usually easier for maintennace, because you can use intervals. Just do not forget check "Alternantive accounts" in RFBILA00.
    Regards,
    Michal
