Account specific sleep problem

Guys,
My Mac has suddenly stopped going to sleep properly (Auto, it's fine if I put it to sleep).
The screen goes blank and the light on the front illuminates constantly rather than lighting then fading. I can also hear the mac is still really awake (HD I guess?). So I think it is just putting the display to sleep. There is nothing else running, I haven't installed any new software or connected any new hardware.
I have reset the SMC, and run the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance tasks. I've just logged into my wife's account and all is well here, so I guess it's a problem with my account. I seem to recall that I may have to delete some prefs but can't remember what and I don't want to go and fiddle where I'm not sure what I'm fiddling with.
Any help greatly appreciated.
McD

Yes McD,
it seems only display goes to sleep.
I would start with a timid approach, only in this User Account's Caches folder:
Try first to delete only these files
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache
see if it works. Then this folder
Home/Library/Caches/System Preferences
I wish it might be as simple as this: a corrupted cache that would have to do only with System Preferences.
Of course you could always try then, if it still doesn't work, to simply trash the whole Caches folder (for this user),
If you do that, restart your Mac before trying again to set your Energy Saver preferences.
Good luck,
Axel

• New user account fixes sleep problem... what next?

I have a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHZ that will no longer sleep automatically. I've tried a number of fixes, but the only thing that has restored normal sleep behavior is creating a new user account. Since the problem seems isolated to my current user account, what can I do to fix my user account? I'd prefer not to rebuild this account or reinstall Snow Leopard. Any thoughts are appreciated.
I've tried:
Quitting everything
Resetting PRAM
Resetting the SMC
Turning off bluetooth
Re-pairing my bluetooth keyboard and mouse
Turning off airport
Unplugging everything, including power
Changing energy saver preferences
Restoring energy saver preferences
Deleting unused login items (only iTunesHelper, Things Helper, and AdobeResourceSynchronizer remain)
Looking in Activity Monitor for suspicious processes
Nothing above worked or revealed any clues. I haven't installed any new software recently. I did use a Verizon USB760 3G modem for the first and only time on a recent trip, but did not install software to accompany it. I can find no traces of the device on my system since returning home but am suspicious.
Thanks for any help. Cheers!

Yes. You got it. My computer will sleep when I close the lid or click on  > Sleep, but not when I leave it idle for the amount of time set in the Energy Saver preference pane.
I tried deleting com.apple.systempreferences.plist from the folder ~/Library/Preferences and restarting but the computer still won't sleep. Other ideas anyone?

• Account Specific Monitor Problems

I recently started having a problem where my screen colors are washed out and the text has a washed out grainy appearance. I have been having a few odd spinning beach ball lags lately when the network was being accessed, but it got serious today when I was trying to import at webconnect file into Quicken 2007 and it locked up. After that, my monitor display looks terrible. Really weird color things are going on. For example in Excel what used to be green highlighted cells with black text are no longer highlighted and the text font is green instead. The blue shading in the Mac OK buttons etc looks washed out and not fully filling the button. Messing with the monitor controls and trying to calibrate it are no help.
The odd thing is that when I log into another account on this machine the display is fine. None of the color changes in Excel are present, the screen text is clear and sharp, color of buttons and scroll bars are fine.
I have run cocktail and cleared all my user and system caches. I did not clear the caches of the other account that is working OK.
Any ideas why this is happening to just one account and not the other? I guess that means it can;t be a hardware issue at least.

I figured it out. I found a comment in another post that this might be the contrast setting in the Universal Access System Preference. Sure enough when I checked my contrast slider it was in the middle, and when I slid it to the far left back to normal all my screen settings returned to normal. This explains why it was user specific.
I'd like to disable Universal Access, or at least the keyboard shortcut to control the contrast settings, which I probably hit by accident when trying to bring up force quit.

• I can't back up my information to iCloud and sync them to my iPad. I tried to reset the account by erasing everything in the account but the problem is still there. Can someone let me know how to delete everything in my account and start a new backup.

Hello,
I'm having probelms backing up my information to my iCloud account. I tried to reset the account and erase everything in my account but the problem is still there. The problem is that my iPhone is not able to complete the backup process and all it is saying a problem occured.
Someone Pleas let me know how to reset my account, delet everyhting in the Cloud and start a new backup.
Thanks very much,

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
First check that your device is correctly connected to the wifi/internet (settings > wifi)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

I have nothing plugged in my MacBookPro, other than the power cord.
I have tried all the tips I've seen, like resetting the PRAM and the SMC.
I even did a reinstall of the entire OS X (SnowLeopard 10.6.7) although I did recover all my apps and settings from TimeMachine.
It is really annoying and I am beginning to think there is some issue in the USB code within OSX's kernel.
The only thing I can think of I have not tried is not running Firefox, which is always open.
But I don't see how that might interfere with the usb hub on the motherboard issuing a wakeup.
I don't remember ever having this issue on my first generation MacBookPro.
All the info I've found is minimum a few months old, going back to a few years for problems with external hubs.
Does anyone know anything else to try? Is this the best way to make Apple know about the issue?

Solution found for me. From Adobe Acrobat & Reader 9.1 Release Notes:
Roaming Profiles on Windows and Networked Home Directory on Macintosh
are not supported configurations for 9.0 or 9.1, however we have made
several fixes in 9.1. We are looking at the possibility of supporting
this for the next major release.
As I am working with roaming profiles, my current solution (which is no solution at all) is to wipe current and reinstall Acrobat/Reader 8. Among other things there are supposed console hacks to make the purchased Adobe software run at all in a group work environment. I will end up trying them later.

• Account-specific (Error code -36) issue -- I'm stumped.

Hello All:
I'm at my wits' end trying to figure this one out; I've searched the forums (and about half of the internet), but I haven't yet run across this particular scenario:
Client's Mac:
G4/500 running Mac OS X 10.3.9
(there are 6 other Macs in this office; no others are experiencing this problem)
Shared PC:
WinXP SP2 running on an older beige Gateway PIII box.
Shared folders set up (with sharing permissions verified thoroughly).
Problem
The client is unable to connect to shared folders on the WinXP box; every time she tries, she's presented with the error message:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in (smb://IPA.DDR.ESS.HERE) could not be read or written.
(Error code -36).
This happens no matter how I authenticate (using her creds or mine -- I'm a domain admin, so I should have access) when trying to connect from her admin account. However, I am able to connect to any shared volume on the same machine if I log in on another admin account on the Mac (even if I use her credentials).
Obviously, it's not a connectivity or hardware issue, since the same computer is connecting without a problem (using a different account). Also, none of the other Mac users are having this problem. All users are on the same subnet.
Here's what I've tried so far in my troubleshooting process:
1. I verified sharing setup and permissions on the WinXP volume;
2. I tested to ensure other Macs could see the share -- they all could;
3. I've run the Mac OS 10.3.9 Combo updater;
4. I've updated Symantec Antivirus on the WinXP box (per the recommendation of an artice; but clean dogs?never hurts);
5. I've searched high and low with Google.
Since I can get to it from other accounts on the same computer, I'm inclined to believe there's some sort of user preference file corruption (or some other account-specific problem).
Is there a .plist file in the user's account that could be removed (and allowed to rebuild) to restore connectivity to the shared volume? Or is there some sort of utility to "rebuild" a user account? ...or am I barking up the wrong tree here?
Any assistance would be most appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion, Charles.
I eliminated hardware as a culprit early in the troubleshooting process, since internet connectivity was still robust.
I also thought that the Directory Access information may have been to blame; that's why I went so far as to do a combo updater (as a sort of "whack on the head" measure).
But when I was able to log on the same Mac using a different account and I did not experience the issue, I started looking at account-specific issues.
From what I understand, Directory Access (SMB inclusive) are system-wide settings affecting all user accounts. Given that assumption, I was thinking there might be some sort of user-specific preference file that might be to blame here, but I don't want to just start blowing out .plist files willy-nilly until I can obtain a better understanding of which one(s) might be at fault.
My fallback plan is to simply create a new account for the user and migrate all her information over folder-by-folder, but I'm hoping there's an easier fix (plus, I'm looking at this as an opportunity for a better understanding of user account structure).

• Os 10.7.3 combined update sleep problems

Whhen I put the computer to sleep it will not wake up. Starts and stops part way thru.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

• 10.8.4 sleep problem

My Mac Pro Eearly 2008 will not sleep anymore since I installed 10.8.4. When I press sleep it goes briefly (30seconds) to sleep and than it shuts down. Any idea?

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved.
Step 2
From the menu bar, select
System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
Step 3
Reset the SMC.
Step 4
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 5
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 6
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

• New computer, still having SLEEP problems... aarrghh!

I just switched from my PPC 2x1.25G4 MDD to the new MacPro 2x3.2... and i'm still having sleep issues!
And this was before I even migrated over my system (which I did manually). I played around on my new, virgin system... and sleep was all wonky!
My previous problems w/ the G4 started right after the 10.5.2 update. I could GO to sleep, and wake up, but my monitor wouldn't come back on! Also, my USB and firewire would stop responding unless I did a reset.
Now, it's very similar. I can go to sleep, but when I hit the space bar, or click the mouse to wake up, the MacPro's fan starts WHIIRRING very loudly... and, more often than not, I get a grey screen with an apple, and the "progress gear wheel", which means the computer is starting up!
Again, I have NOT migrated all my old stuff over. Just very specific apps, and user info.
So what's going on? I've searched these forums and elsewhere, and sleep problems are very common w/ Leopard.
Any ideas?
e

Two of the most common causes for sleep issues are peripherals that aren't known to be compatible with Energy Saver, and peripherals that are underpowered plugged into the displays which aren't always able to give those peripherals sufficient power. As for fan issues, some people are more sensitive to fan noise than others, but some fan noise is normal, while others are not. Find an authorized service center that has a quiet room where they can investigate whether the noise is normal, or is willing to make a house call to determine it. I would not ask someone who has been sitting in the noise filled Apple Store to diagnose if the noise is normal.

• Possible reason for the iMac G5 with 10.4.3 Sleep Problems

Ok first off let me say that I got this new iMac G5 20" about 4 days ago. It's wonderful. If anyone out there is holding out for the intel machines, don't wait, get a G5. It's a fantastic machine. Now on to the meat of the subject. The story goes like this; I hooked up my Plextor PVR with eyeTV to my iMac to see how well it would do (been using it with a P4 Windoze XP machine and my iBook G4 14" with no problems). It worked just great. No problems with the iMac, the PVR or any of my other addons (including the boatload of software I migrated over from the iBook). So I set up EyeTV to record some stuff while I was asleep. It's supposed to wake up the Mac, record the shows then the Mac goes back to sleep. Easy huh? Well the wakeup, record part went just fine but the Mac wouldn't go back to sleep. Perplexed (actually thrilled, this is where I have my most fun with new machines, figuring out why they aren't working correctly) I did all the standard "I can't get my Mac to sleep automatically" things. You know, blow away all the plist files that have anything to do with powermanagement and autowake, reset NVRAM from OF, reset the PRAM (3 times just like the old days), reset the SMU, blow away all the Bluetooth plist files, etc, etc. Did them all, don't suggest any, I did them all I swear, really. I've been through this kind of thing before. One big difference with this iMac. Nothing and I mean nothing would work to fix the problem. The only way the bad boy would sleep is by hitting the Power button for a second or selecting "Sleep" from the Apple menu. Hmmmm. Spent the better part of a morning reading every thread here about peoples problems like mine. One post and I mean exactly one had something I hadn't tried. I rebooted the Mac in Safe Mode (hold the shift key down while it boots until you get the login screen with the red text "Safe Mode".) I forgot that OSX even did that. Logged in as myself (normal login but still in safe mode) and low and behold the thing would sleep automatically! I repeated this (boot in normal mode, boot in safe mode) many times. Every single time the Mac would sleep from safe mode but not from normal mode. Tells me it's software not hardware. In each mode I run "Activity Monitor" and save a list of the running processes to a text file. Now compare them and shutdown each process that is different one at a time. To make this story somewhat shorter (heh) I finally found that I could consistantly make the machine sleep or not sleep by killing the "mdimport" process and restarting it. This has to do with Spotlight. To be exact, it's the process that imports Metadata into Spotlights data list (I'm no expert, have a basic understanding of this). So on a hunch I ran the terminal and entered the command to delete then rebuild Spotlights databases, "mdutil -E /". Then I let Spotlight rebuild that databases and rebooted. Guess what? The iMac sleeps perfectly now, go figure. I did this once so far and the Mac has been working correctly now for about 5 hours. I've got a feeling that the problem will come back. Especially if it's an inherent problem in Spotlight and the 10.4.3 upgrade. I don't seem to have this problem with 10.4 or earlier. Long post I know but I thought it could help someone out. Please post any comments. I'd like to know if what I did is coincidence (I really don't think so since I reproduced it many times) or not.

iBook G4 1Gig, iMac G5 2.1 Gig, iMac 266   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iMac 266 running 10.3.6, been using Macs since the '80s

Right guy's i to have researched this problem
concerning my auto sleep problem.I started off by
following Joeaux's original post by safe
booting, noting what was running in the activity
monitor, booting normaly and again noting what was
running now.I eliminated the same processes that were
running from both boots, and then started quiting one
by one, the extra processes, from the normal boot, in
activity monitor.Once you quit a process, allow the
computer to try to go to sleep i.e set energy saver
to 1minute and wait to see what happens.I tried the "
mdimport"as of Joeaux but this was not my problem. In
my case the sleep problem was down to two
applications called N67U_ButtonManager and
N124U_ButtonManager.These are for use with my Canon
scanner.I also noted that if i left the scanner
connected to the computer this would also stop it
going to sleep, even after deleting the two
applications.Hope this helps!
Thank you now i know that those login items are for my scanner, and not logic audio i am a little less angry(Logic is now an apple application but the version I run was from the emagic days and i presumed that the button managers were from this app as it was the oldest bit of software running on my machine) By the way any apps that may cause a problem like this are more than likely simply residing in your user login items and can be disabled from there permanently as far as i can see.

• Owning 2 iphones with one Apple account has = Sync Problems.

Owning 2 iphones with one Apple account has = Sync Problems.  iTunes is thinking my old iphone 4 is the same phone as my iphone 5C.  When I plugged in my iphone 5C it auto synced my 5C to iTunes and it wiped my 5C and restored it to the same content as is on my iPhone 4.  This is a big problem since my 5 year old has been using the iPhone 4.  It's all Mickey Mouse and Backyardigans.  (Total photo/app/contacts loss)
I was able to update the 5C and restore from a 3 month old backup that is actually the content from the 5C but now when I plug in my 5C it wants to "setup as new phone" or "restore from backup"  What's going on?  I'm afraid to choose either option.
How can I get iTunes to see these devices as 2 and not one?
Can I use my Apple ID on both phones still or is this the problem?

They were both displaying the same name in iTunes.  I changed the name of the iPhone 4 before the 5C was plugged in but it still went ahead with syncing it to the 4's data.

• 15" AL PB G4 Sleep Problems

Another in the long list of sleep problems. Running the latest & greatest Tiger and all that. I have read and read and READ! the discussions and followed most of the advise to no avail. Here's what's up.
When I try to put the PB to sleep, either by closing the lid or through apple menu, everything starts out ok. Screen goes dark, LED comes on, Great! At the moment when the LED becomes brightest, the Superdrive makes a noise like it is cycling, and the PB wakes up. If I leave the lid closed it continues this indefinitely. If the lid is up, it wakes and the srceen flashes from desktop to black a couple of times the seems ok.
When I open the lid after experiencing this behavior I can hear the machine wake, but screen stays black. Must turn off by holding down power button, then start up again and all is fine.
Any one else experiencing this drive cycling?

Thanx,
