Accounts Pane Crashes Mail

When I try to open the Accounts Pane in Mail, Mail freezes up for a few seconds, then quits. Any help? I'm reluctant to delete my prefs file because I don't want to lose all my account data.

Try inserting your Mac OS X installation disc and rebooting your system. When you get to the first menu, select Disk Utility from the Utilities item in the menu bar, and first Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions. Then restart normally, eject that installation disc and see if the problem is still there.
Post back with details.

  • Gmail appears in Mail 4.2 but is not in my accounts pane

Hi all. I will try my best to explain this weird little situation about Gmail in my Mail client.
Okay - I've just bought a 27" iMac running Snow Leopard and after the setup, I configured my Mail acounts. I have three accounts, one of them being Gmail, and after everything was configured, I started to get gmail mail from way back to 2007 and my inbox kept filling up with tons of old gmails.
Next, I deleted gmail from my accounts pane in Mail. It solved the duplicate emails issue fine. In fact, I still get current Gmail mail coming in, which is weird, as Mail is no longer set up to retrieve it.
Now this is my REAL question for this post: how can I compose a message using my Gmail address? I know that since the account is not setup in Mail, it follows that the address is not selectable from my drop down menu, however, is there a way of going back and setting up Gmail in my accounts pane without getting all of those old duplicated emails?
    Thanks so much,
    B.

You could do a search in Gmail itself, delete the old messages, and then re-create your account. Better yet, archive those messages, and then you'll have them in Mail if you need them, but they won't be cluttering up your inbox.

    Hello:
Try rebuilding the mailbox (it takes awhile).

  • Exchange account crashes Mail app

My 1st Gen iPhone has worked well with my Exchange account (and 3 other accounts) for more than a year, but since upgrading to 3.0 (and 3.0.1) the phone's Mail app crashes whenever it checks for mail. If I turn off the Exchange account, no crashes. Is there a fix for this behavior?

Figured it out. I deleted the existing account and created a new one, using the same information, and Mail no longer crashes. Furthermore, it appears that email from this account is now pushed to the phone.

  • Corrupted POP account crashing Mail in Leopard

Hello all. After a full day of triage yesterday, I found that a single POP account is crashing the Mail app every time it tries to retrieve new mail. None of the other POP or IMAP accounts have any trouble sending or receiving when tested separately.
I had current backups for everything, so now I'm looking for guidance to repair / replace the damaged POP account.
If I delete that account or simply trash that mbox, is there a way to re-import that mbox from the backup copy? Will it fix the problem, or is it likely that either there's a corrupted message in the existing, downloaded mail OR a corrupted message on the server that's causing the problem?
Also, If I delete the offending POP account, which contains thousands of archival emails, will importing from the backup mean I have to wade through years of old email again? Now the messages are distributed across their respective projects in sub-folders. I'd prefer to have the archival material stay where it is.
As you may be able to tell, I'm trying to fix this with a surgical strike. I've had no trouble with Mail until yesterday, so I'm hoping to fix the problem with this one account and not waste another entire day.
Thanks for any pointers on this one,
    Tim

"Very early in this topic I explain how to remove the old account folder, and then Import its mailboxes (after renaming a bit) to be On My Mailboxes accessible in the Sidebar. Once that is done, you can Move those messages back to any current account mailbox, such as Inbox or Sent. Was there something you did not understand about doing that?"
Unfortunately, I spent most of yesterday doing just that. I ended up not having all my email transfer - in some cases in was as few as 99 out of a 1,000 messages. The process seems imperfect, and it took a mixture of importing and re-importing mboxes and OS X Mail options in sequence to actually coax all the existing mail back.
"I suspect that the proper way to have proceeded was purging the com.apple.mail.plist all along. I can assure you from much experience that there are numerous instances where that is the real solution to such crashes, but you were reluctant to do that. I still would advise doing that, since corruption in any area we have discussed could result in a corruption of that plist file, and purging is often the only solution. Your test result with a New User Account is also an indicator of needing to purge and freshen the com.apple.mail.plist file."
My reluctance stems from prior nightmares trying to retrieve archival and current email after rebuilding com.apple.mail.plist files in earlier versions of Mail. My experience yesterday solidified that fear. If Apple had some retrieval / rebuild utility that matched the current numbers of messages from any given account (including draft, sent, inbox, etc.) and then came up with the same numbers of re-imported messages on the other end, I'd have a lot more confidence in the process. Instead, I went from 1,024 existing messages to 623 after re-creating the account.
Believe me, I'm very appreciative of your attention, but wiping out years worth of messages with very little expectation of ever getting the full complement back is daunting. I'm going to re-investigate Mail Steward and (one hopes) find a more stable way to archive important email outside the Mail app structure.
For now, I'll take your advice about dragging all the existing messages from the POP account and dragging them to their respective places in the new IMAP account. (I asked my most recent question because I've read elsewhere that dragging files from POP to IMAP accounts often results in incomplete transfers.)
I apologize if it seems I'm ungrateful and unwilling to take good advice. I've had more problems with Leopard than the past two iterations of OS X combined, and I'm annoyed by having to waste three full days trying to fix this 10.5.2 gremlin.
    Thanks again,
    Tim

  • Mail wants to create new account after crash

so, i ran out of batteries and my laptop just died. power attached, restart, my firefox session is there with all windows intact, but when i start up mail, it gives me the "welcome to mail" create account wizard. HELP! of course i know all my mail is there mel>library>mail, but how do i just 'bypass' this wizard to find my mail again?

    Greetings,
how do i just 'bypass' this wizard to find my mail again?
You can't. Because you let your battery die (never a good idea), your mail preferences file is now corrupt and doesn't know you have any mail accounts. So you need to do this:
If all your mail accounts are POP:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.mail.plist file.
    3. Restart Mail and setup your account(s) again; Mail will automatically find your existing mailboxes.
If any or all of your accounts are IMAP:
Do steps 1 and 2 above.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove each mailbox beginning with "IMAP-".
    4. Restart Mail, setup your accounts again, and wait for Mail to download your IMAP mail again.
In either case, check to be sure Mail is working properly again after the last step; if so, you can delete the IMAP folders on your Desktop and empty the Trash.

  • ICloud preferences pane crashes.

Color this "futile" but I cannot find a solution for this.  My iCloud Preferences pane crashes. I'm using 10.7.4, running my system preferences in 32-bit mode, deleted all the files/folders that match the search "icloud" in my Library folder, have no accounts in my Mail, Contacts and Calendars, and MobileMe has been blanked.  Oops: update!  Once I set preferences to run in 32-bit mode, I now see a drop-down "Could Not Load iCloud Preferences Pane". Anyone tried anything new?

    Andy,
I have the same problem and I think its because I have set it up the that my home folder resides on the server and is mapped to my laptop, which is the way I want to keep it. I'm having the same trouble with the internet accounts preferences also.
Did you make any progress resolving it?
    Geoff.

  • Mail "To Do" hangs / crashes Mail since 10.5.2 update

Since I updated to 10.5.2, I'm having some Mail issues, primarily with the "To Do" function. If I so much as click on a To Do, I get the spinning beach ball and ultimately have to force quit Mail.
I have an Exchange Email account and .Mac account. Under "To Dos", there are two categories showing "On My Mac" and "Mac". The Exchange account does not show up under To Dos.
Doing anything with any To Dos in either On My Mac or Mac, hangs mail and I have to force quit.
I use the To Dos a lot for work, primarily to track phone calls. I'm open to anything to fix this. I would even delete all the To Dos, reset it and start from scratch, but can't figure out how to do so, given that any interaction with any To Dos, simply crashes Mail.
    Help??

Yea the same thing happens to me. Anything to do with "To-Do" results it in the beach ball of doom...
I don't know if its just me but there's no way to contact Apple about this or any problem via email... I've looked all over the support page and there's no support email about OSX just .Mac and iTunes..
    Anyways this problem *****...

  • Using a hotmail account as Mac Mail?

A friend has an Apple which a few years ago downloaded a plugin to allow all emails from hotmail come to her Macmail application on her Macbook. She can also send mails from here as normal and they are sent as if in her hotmail account.
However, she cannot remember how this is done. I'm looking to do the same, use my hotmail account email without having to sign into the hotmail browser, and use my macmail application. Does anyone have the details/plugin details to do this please? (I only have 10.3.9 by the way)
    Many thanks,

    I have found this -
    http://www.automagic-software.com/products.php
check your mail->preferences->accounts, and click on your hotmail account.
in the 'account information' tab, i have the following--without the brackets:
description: [what shows up in the account pane to the left]
    email address: [your hotmail address]
    full name: [um...yer name]
    incoming mail server: [hotmail.com]
user name: [your email address before the @]
    password: [your hotmail password]
    outgoing mail server:[services.msn.com:myusername]
if i click the 'server settings' button below that pulldown, i can type in 'services.msn.com' easily enough. but, in order to get my username to show, i change the authentication pulldown to 'password' and enter my username and password.
ok...that last bit is where it gets a little hinky. mine works just fine with authentication turned off. but, in the main view my outgoing server still shows my username after the colon.
also, make sure you configure the other tabs....especially the 'advanced' tab where you have to enable the account.
and, that the httpmail url is set to:
    http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
If this works, could someone please confirm?
    Thanks,

  • Opening Preferences Crashes Mail

    Hi,
Every time I try opening the Preferences pane in Mail, the spinning beach ball appears and I have to force quit the program. (This is Mail 2.1.) The problem seems to be confined to my account. Other users on this computer don't have the same problem. Can anyone suggest a solution?
    Thank you.
    Michel Chaouli

    Hi Michel.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Do you have any Mail plug-ins? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Lands' End Message Crashes Mail

I received a message from Lands' End that crashed Mail when I attempted to delete it.
To fix I opened Users, Library, Mail, the folder for the mail ID that received it, Messages. I moved all the .emix files to the desktop and restarted Mail. It started up fine.
I opened each of the .emix files one at a time until I found the bad Lands' End message. When opened it crashed Mail. I moved the bad message to Trash.
I attempted to delete the message from the inbox but it just grayed out. Under Mailbox I clicked Rebuild. That deleted the bad message.

I tried that, but it doesn't delete that email.   When I restart the iPad and open mail, it still crashes mail when I try to delete it.  The email is a spam email and the account is a pop email account that only puts a copy on my iPad.  I've alread deleted the email from my iPhone, my computer and is not on the server anymore.  I just can't delete the local copy on my iPad 2.  I've even tried clicking edit and deleting the message along with the one above and below it in the list.  It still crashes mail.

  • Gmail exchange is crashing mail

ok so i have the iphone 4 on ios 4.0.1. i have three email accounts, an AOL, business, and gmail (on exchange) yesterday in the morning everything was fine and around 4pm i went to check my mail and app crashes, ok happens, open again, crashing and keeps crashing... so i go to spotlight and search and email... takes me to a sent email and it goes not crash. navigate over to my threaded emails ... crashes, search again, get into my AOL account, inbox/sent/trash all work, go over to my gmail sent works, go to gmails inbox, crashes....
umm so i turn off gmail mail and go back into mail app everything fine, turn mail back on mail app crashes... so i narrowed it down to it being gmail...
so i delete the gmail exchange account, of course mail works fine now, and put gmail back in, still crashing mail app ...
now i went a restored the phone to factory and after it came back up the first thing i did was setup gmail exchange account, went into mail...... app crashes
so i am wondering if anyone else has had this happened to them in the last day or so?

you might want to try going to a computer and moving some email messages to some other folder. I'm wondering if the iphone bug is that it has a problem with maybe an attachment or some particular formatting of a message. If so, moving select messages to some non-viewed folder and seeing what works might identify which message is causing the problem.
    Good luck

  • Can't connect to Office 365 mail account via Apple Mail (Exchange)

I recently upgraded to OS X Yosemite, but had this problem before upgrading as well. I have an Office 365 mail account, but cannot sync it via Apple Mail. I went into my Apple Mail accounts and tried connecting my Office 365 account through the Exchange option, but it will not connect. From my knowledge, this is not an uncommon problem but it is very inconvenient. Is there any way to get around the glitch, or anything I should be doing differently? I do know a couple people with Office 365 accounts who have been able to make it work, but they apparently did not do anything differently when setting up their account.

Sometimes this issue is caused by a misconfiguration or incompatibility of the Exchange server, or perhaps by a bug in Mail. If so, you won't be able to resolve it yourself. The fact that your iOS devices may be working well with the same account isn't relevant, because iOS uses a completely different protocol (ActiveSync) to communicate with Exchange servers. By default, OS X Mail uses the EWS protocol.
Each of the following steps has been reported to help with Exchange issues, at least temporarily, in some cases:
    1. Back up all data. Open the Internet Accounts pane in System Preferences and check to make sure you don't have duplicate Exchange accounts. If you do, delete all but one of the duplicates. If there are no duplicates, delete the account and recreate it with the same settings.
    2. Rebuild the affected mailbox.
    3. Reindex messages.
    4. Follow the instructions in this support article to disable autodiscovery. You may need to get configuration details from the server administrator.
    5. In the Keychain Access application, delete the password item for the account. The next time Mail tries to access the account, you'll be prompted for the password. Check the box to save it in the Keychain.
    6. If you've created subfolders of the Exchange inbox, log in to the server through its web interface, move the messages out, and remove the subfolders. The inbox should have no subfolders.
    7. Synchronize with the server using IMAP rather than EWS. This is only possible if IMAP is enabled on the server.
    8. Consider using Outlook instead of Mail to access your Exchange mail.

  • Help: Can't delete email account in OSX Mail

I have verizon.net email account that I had to update because verizon changed the incoming and outgoing servers.
Each of my family members has a separate profile on my Mac and I was able to successfully update their settings.
I have the admin account. No matter what I do, I can't get the new server settings to stick in MacOSX Mail.
So I tried to delete the email account via System Preferences. When I relaunch Mail or System Preferences, the account is stil there. When I try to delete the account from within Mail, I get an error message:
Account removal failed with error: “The operation couldn’t be completed. Unable to find an account for the UID given.”.
You can try deleting the account from the “Internet Accounts“ preference pane in System Preferences.
I even tried the steps in this thread using Terminal:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23824890#23824890
I even tried deleting the account in my Library preferences.
    No luck.
I had this problem on my 17" MacBook Pro. I just migrated to a Retina MacBook Pro using a Time Machine backup. Same exact problem. I'm thinking there's some bizarro preference thingy that is buried somewhere that needs to be removed.
Yes, I ran disk utility as well.
    Help me please!

After closing mail I used a plist editor and edited:
    /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist
    (as always TAKE A BACKUP)
I removed all key pairs to the offending account.
    Voila.
    Removed.
