Accurately placing AI files into Indd - CS 3

I am redoing my business cards and for the life of me I can not figure out how to ACCURATELY get my AI business card images (front and Back) into an INDD Avery business card template. I am going to use the two side printable Avery business cards on my HP 2605 DN.
When I place the image either as an .ai or .pdf file the image is not accurately placed. (It is placed in the upper left hand corner.  Fitting it to content or frame does not give me the same layout proportion as the design.  Both the AI file and INDD place holders are the same size.
When I place the AI image into an Avery AI business card template I can place it as an image, or media etc.  I do not see any place in INDD that gives me the same option.  With INDD I can print both sides on my printer.
If the source and destination are the same size why is it not placing accurately.?
Thanks in advance.
Rich

This
It is placed in the upper left hand corner
suggests to me you are placing it inside a rectangle that's already somewhere on your page, OR that rectangle was selected at the time you selected an image to place. InDesign tries helpfully to do exactly what you appear to be doing (it's a fairly standard way of working).
In general, if you place an image into InDesign, it gets placed with the left corner on the position where you click, at 100% scaling.
You can override this behaviour by de-selecting the "Replace Selected Item" checkbox in the "Place" dialog, and by being careful not to click onto an existing frame.

  • Colour shift when placing PSD files into illustrator

    Hi there
I have tested this issue on CS 3,4 and 5.
bascially if I create a CMYK document with a colour image and save this down as a psd file with the coated Fogra 39 embedded in it. If I create a new file within Illustrator with the same colur management and place the psd file into the document and check the link option (so it is a linked file), the colour shifts when using the colour picker. If I print the document from each APP they visually look different as well.
If I place the psd into illustrator without selecting the link option the colour has the same CMYK values as the psd within Photoshop and also prints correctly.
i can only assume that there is an option somewhere in regards to the "link" option and how this changes tha colour values somewhere? If not is there anyway I can get around this issue so I can use linked files without the CMYK values changing?
    Thanks in advance
    Paul

    Hi guys
    Thanks for the responses.
I use bridge to blanket the colour settings so this i feel this is not the issue here. If you have a moment and would kindly create a colour tint within PS of what ever colour, save this down as any format and place this into illustrator with the link checkbox checked you will see the colour data has physically changed for the CMYK values. This results in the prints looking different as well. If you deselct the link check box when placing the file the CMYK values are the same.
I tried the overprint preview option. This changes the viewable colour on screen but not the CMYK data of the file.
There seems to be a fundamental floor with this link option for some reason.
I might have phone Adobe direct for this iisue as I cannot find a fix for this.
    Many thanks

  • Placing InDesign files into inDesign files

This is more a two-part workflow question to make sure I start off on a good footing.
I'm working with another person putting together a 40 page brochure that has 6 different sections formatted the same way, with some photos plus a cover.
I'm doing a good chunk of formatting the sections and then sending them to him so he can collate the whole thing with his sections, so that the printer will get a complete InDesign publication. He has a master page all set with the footer title and page number, and will copy my files over onto these.
He supplied me with some Paragraph styles but i had to tweak some of them due to client requests.
1.What would/is the best way to merge my files with his? He's Copying each page and pasting my files into his master page template?
-Can they just be inserted/placed as additional pages into his document? What's the easiest way?
    - He did this, and the text came in a little odd, with spaces and some odd formatting. It's creating a little more work and am wondering what to do to make this transition a little less painful as we near the end of a long project.
I sent him my document, told him to:
    - load my styles
    - in preferences, set baseline grid as I have it
(margins and columns are set exactly the same)
Once he pastes in my files, they should now align closely to the way I had them. I tried a test and it seemed to work.
One question, if the baseline grid is set as i had it in my documents, will the copy that he has on his own document files get altered by default when he changes the settings to those I had?
Any overview on this issue will be illuminating as always!
    Thanks,
    Julian

You'll make your life easier if you break down tasks and
responsibilities. It would be best if you could work independently on
separate chapters (and then put the chapters together using the Book
feature), but if you both have to work on all the files, it's important
that you duplicate style changes, maybe begin with a comprehensive
design sample that you both agree on, and then save your files from that
    one sample.
Very difficult to have two designers working on one book. Much better to
have one author hand everything off to one designer.

  • Placing Illustrator Files into InDesign-Apparel Industry Related?

    Hi,
I am working on a larger document, approx. 60+ pages.
    I'm actually having 2 issues:
The apparel sketches are done in Illustrator, and normally what I do is raterize the files and place them into InDesign. I've been encountering some difficulties lately, however and I wanted to see if I could get some input as to whether or not this is best practice. (It has never been an issue in the past, but the document size was maybe half- around 20-30 pages.)
Also, these documents grow to an enormous size of 2.74 GB in the last case and I had a heck of a time getting it down to under 10MB in pdf format when it needed to be sent off. Is there anything I can do to make this easier on myself?
And last when making a pdf, it has happened that some of the apparel illustrations come through discolored or blacked out, if you have any insight to this as well, I'd appreciate it.
I've only been working with 5.5 for a few months and never on documents this large, but this project is ongoing, so I need to get a handle on this situation.
    Thanks

    Hm, okay.
How would I know if the file is corrupt?
Well, you often don't, until it crashes and is unrecoverable. Then it's too late. But "insanely swollen file size" is a symptom. However, I can't know if your file size is reasonable or not, depends on the content, and it sounds like your content is pretty heavyweight. For instance - I thought it was possilbe to strip out custom brushes when saving AI files to bring file size down. I've never touched an AI file that was too large because of the number of swatches. So, depending on how much you have in there, then maybe your two-gig file isn't on the verge of crashing and burning.
I did inherit it, but have since used it as a template and "saved as" various versions. I'm not really sure if it started in 5 or not.
Cool trick: Click on Help, then hold down Control when you click on About. This will take you to a "Component Information" screen, and in the lower-left-hand corner you can see the Document History. So you can learn if you inherited a file that started in CS5. Or in CS3, or in PageMaker.
General best-practices as recommended by forum regulars is to finish a file in the format in which it started. If a file has to be moved from an older version to a newer version, then exporting IDML or INX before moving is advised. This is because of a lot of anecdotal evidence that opening up old files in newer versions and then doing a bunch of work is correlated with file corruption.
I have not tried to export-to-IDML-and-reopen, but I certainly will. What does this do exactly?
Well, it'll do a bunch of different things. It'll reinterpret the file format, which can strip out corruption. It'll strip out all image previews. If there is cruft in your file, then this will probably remove it.

  • Placed SWF file into dreamweaver, but it breaks up my layout.

    Hello all
OK - so - warning -  I am rather amateur at all this. LIke many people, I make up my own website, which I have done in the past with no problems, but this time I have come unstuck because I am trying to insert a flash swf. I have managed to get so far with my website design for the photos page (which includes a thumbnail gallery which has been made using flash) but now it is not previewing correctly.
I have designed the layout in Fireworks and that exports as an html fine and looks good in dreamweaver and also when I preview in browser.
I made a slice in Fireworks the same size as my swf and replaced that image with the swf once I had opened up the exported html file in DW. But sfter I put the swf in, when I preview in browser, the slices seem to have mucked about a bit and the images in the table (I assume) are not aligned correctly.
Please bear in mind that since I will only ever design this website, I really don't want to have to spend hours learing CSS (or whatever) though of course I aprpeciate that knowing code will help. I have had a go at learning some of it, and cannot get my head around it! If there is no obvious answer, I guess I will just figure out another way around it - but I'm hoping it is something simple.....
Here is a link to a screenshot of what it looks like when I preview (the white arrrows point out the problems)

Of course, I'll say nothing about the ill-advised use of Flash....
Then I will.   Flash is a dead web technology because the world's most popular devices don't support it.  If you choose to use Flash, you're alienating people who use iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, newer Androids, and more...  That's a lot of people who will never see your flash gallery.
Create a CSS Layout or use one of the pre-built layouts that comes with DW.  See screenshot.
Use a jQuery image gallery instead of Flash.  jQuery is well supported by all modern web devices.

  • How to add a video file into an html page

I would like to add a Quick Time video into a website that i am currently coding for a school project. I have the video file on my hard drive, so I'm not trying to embed it from YouTube. I have tried several ways of placing the video into my webpage, but all I can hear is the sound from it, there is no visual to go with it. Does anyone know how I would go about placing the file into my webpage, or what code I would need to use? I'm using Dreamweaver CS4 and, once again, the video is a Quick Time file.
    Thanks in advance.

QuickTime requires player and plugins that most people don't have.  You'll reach a much wider audience if you use HTML5 <video> with mp4, webm and ogg files.

  • Cross references corrupted after placing Word document into an InDesign document

I am placing a word document which contains cross references to headers and captions/figures within the document. They seem to be fine and function correctly in the Word document, however, after I place this word doc into my InDesign doc, I take a look at the cross references panel and notice that the cross references have been corrupted. It is wrapping the wrong portions of text from the cross reference destinations. See screenshot for a visual of how the cross references are malformed. For example the 7th cross reference in the list should say Framework Details, not "Framework Detai
InDesign Cross References Panel - showing malformed bits of text
Another visual of this issue can be seen if I view the text frame in Story Editor view, see below. You can see that the cross reference source tags (blue arrow like symbols) are wrapped around the wrong portions of text. The blue tags shoud be wrapped around Framework Details and 52
    InDesign Story Editor
You can see below as to why I think the cross references are fine in the Word doc, you can see the same cross reference I used in the example above in the word doc and it is wrapping the correct portion of text:
Word - showing cross reference is formed corerctly
Why is this not being maintained after placing this file into InDesign?
Also I am not performing any cross reference updates after I import, this problem occurs immediately after the place of the doc.
Why would InDesign be having difficulty in importing these cross references? I have set up a simple test Word document with cross references to headers and figures in and they have imported fine. What could be wrong with this other particular word doc that would be causing this "corruption" of cross references? This is not only causing my cross references to break visually and lack the update capability but also I cannot export the InDesign doc to an ePub as it keeps crashing. I believe from my reading on the web that if there is only one broken cross reference source i.e. the cross reference destination that it is trying to link to is missing, then the export to epub will fail. So this is causing a massive headache for me at the minute.
Is there anything I could be looking at in the Word doc to try and figure out why the porblem is occuring in the first place?
If anyone has any tips or a possible solution to this I would really appreciate it. Even better if someone knows the reason why this is happening I can tackle it from the source and prevent it happening time and time again.
    Thanks, Dave

    Only bad experiences, Peter ...
I've seen this character shifting before on numerous occasions, both with cross references and with hyperlinks. (It's especially funny with hyperlinks, 'cause you can see that the outline box shifts one character at a time per each next link...)
The thing is it's not just limited to hyperlinks and cross refs. Dave's screenshot doesn't show bold, italics, or other local formatting, but it's a fair bet these are off by a couple of characters as well.
Dave's experiment of making a "minimal" Word document to confirm it's a persistent bug didn't work. I found the same thing: either a document comes in fine, or everything is foo-bar right from the start. There must be some internal Word code that InDesign forgets to count as 'a character position'. Without delving into the Word file with some very advanced tools, it's anyone's guess what code that would be.
I can only offer the one solution that works for me: in Word, remove all hyperlinks (which is what Word uses for internal links as well as for external ones) and convert all cross-references to text. Then, if the file finally imports fine, re-build them in InDesign. It's a cumbersome workaround, but slightly better (only just) than checking each reference, delete, rebuild, check next -- etc. (And with that the chance that your other text attributes are also off.)

  • Change the permission while placing the file

    Hi Experts,
    I have a production issue :
I am placing the .txt file into a SFTP server location from a SFTP Location[NO Transformation in the file]. (Sender and receiver channels are SFTP)
I am using user- user1(for example) which have the read write access to the particular folder, hence when it places the file it places with 664 permission .(This permission gives only user1 as read/write access , but other user have read only access).
    The requirement :
The user2 want to deletes the file from the particular folder location , they want to know by any means can PI change the permission while placing the file into that location so that user2 can also have read/write access.
Can you provide the opinion whether it can be done using SFTP receiver channel or any other option to change the permission of the file.

As far as i know the permissions are related to the folder and the User not for files
While creating the access, a particular user authorizations related particular folder, not related to files.
So this should be done some thing like by giving the read/write access to user2 as well

    Hi,
I am just getting the hang of placing embedded files into my documents and the issue I am having is when I place an embedded psd into another document it seems to shrink it down and lose it's sharpness. Why is this and how do I fix it?

Worked just fine yesterday. I can place a JPG. I typically just drag a PSD into Illustrator. I now get an error message sayng it can not read the file. I have tried placing the file and nothing happens (no messages or warnings).
I tried saving the PSD as a TIF, but no luck here either.
I have tried opening a new file and dragging various PSD files in. It seems that none of the work any longer.
    And yes I've rebooted.

I have the exact same problem. I haven't placed PSD files into Illustrator for quite a while, but I just tried it this morning and it doesn't work (just like the OP). I even opened a file about a year old, which used to work just fine, but now the PSD file doesn't appear and I can't re-import it. So it has to be some issue recently introduced.
@Galumph - I have Vista x64 and 8GB of RAM. Is there a specific issue that applies to this particular combo?

  • How to convert a .psd file into .ai (adobe illustrator)

    Hi Guys,
I have a very high quality multi layer .psd file that I need to convert to adobe illustrator in order to export them into autocad.
As I'm very in exprienced, Ive tried to merge the layers in the psd file and then use Export -> 'Path to Illustrator', however when I open the newly created .ai file, it open a dialog box called 'Convert to Artboards' and whatever option i choose (either Legacy Artboard or Crop Area(s)' my new illustrator file seems to be empty.
I appreciate any file anyone can offfer.
    Best Regards
    Alex.

    Importing PSD files into Illustrator
       •   Opening PSD files into Illustrator
    1.  Turn on your computer and launch the Illustrator program.
    2.  Open a new document by clicking File>New in Illustrator’s menu bar.
    3.  To open your Photoshop document, go to File>Open and then select the document you want to open when prompted.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Editable)
This method is ideal if you wish to incorporate a Photoshop document within an existing Illustrator document which can then make the PSD file editable within Illustrator.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click “Place”. Make sure the “Link” option is not selected.
Placing or opening an unlinked Photoshop file will prompt a dialog box with options, choose the most appropriate option and then click “OK”.
    • Convert Layers to Objects: This option will convert the Photoshop layers into Illustrator objects to be able preserve masks, transparency and blending modes.
                                 • Flatten Layers to a Single Object: This option will flatten all the Photoshop layers into a single layer to preserve the look and appearance of the image; however individual Photoshop layers will no longer be editable.
       •   Placing PSD files into Illustrator (Not Editable)
This method is ideal for incorporating your Photoshop files in an existing Illustrator document. Although the PSD file will no longer be editable it will be able to maintain a link to your original Photoshop file.
    1. Launch the Illustrator program, select File>Place.
    2. Locate the PSD file you want to import and click Place. Make sure the Link option is selected.

**The one time it did not work for me and appeared black was because of shadows (hue/saturation adjustment layer). So I compared the old .psd file, that converted fine, to the current one I was trying got send. One of the differences was the introduction of shadows by duplicating the fonts and image shapes, then merging them to a single image with hue/saturation adjustments. When adjusting the hue/saturation, it appears in a separate layer that was locked to next to image that was just produced. Some reason that was the bug that kept Illustrator from placing the .psd file in Illustrator. The solution was to merge the hue/saturation layer with the image layer. Now it’s back to normal.
Hope this save you some time.

  • Placing .indd into .indd Document

I have Tool Manuals that I am producing and when I place a .indd file into one of these InDesign documents the formating is not the same size.
I can build two .indd files with the exact same info with the same margins, paragraph styles, etc. in both. But when I place one .indd into the other the placed .indd file is not the same size, it is smaller.
Is there something I'm over looking that makes it not come in the same?
    Thanks...

Reading your comment made me see my problem, maybe I was looking at all this to hard or something on Friday.

  • Problems placing ai and eps files into PhotoShop CS3 on a Mac

When I place any ai or eps file into PhotoShop using File > Place, the images are pixelated. It does not matter if the PhotoShop file size is 72 dpi or 300 dpi, the end result is still the same.
Placing images used to work a few days ago, and now all of a sudden it does not. Are there any settings that may have been changed?

I can’t reproduce the problem, but as with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program.

  • Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode

Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
I am using windows XP with Adobe Creative suite 2.
In both Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 have the same color settings.
If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
If you look at the ''Document Info'' window you can now see that the RGB file is now a CMYK file. Is this a good working habit ?
    Thanks in advance. :)

    >Is it ok in the long run to placing a RGB photoshop eps file into a Illustrator CS2 CMYK color mode document ?
Please explain why you would do such a thing? (Why RGB, and why EPS.)
    >If I take a RGB file that was created in Photoshop CS2 and place this file in a CMYK color mode document in Illustrator CS2, does this cause a problem for the output of the document ?
    Yes.
You are working in CMYK mode presumably because your Illustrator document is destined for output on a PostScript device -- e.g., a printing press. That means that your RGB image will undergo a space conversion somewhere in the process, and the questions are when and how?
The issue is compounded by the fact that Illustrator ignores color profiles embedded in EPS files by Photoshop. (Just another reason not to use EPS.)
By performing the conversion yourself in Photoshop, you take control of the process and ensure predictable color.

  • Can I write the UID of a textframe into indd file ,and restore the uid when I open the indd file again

I create a UID list for textframe, and I add Some extra properties the textframe,  now I want store these properties into  INDD file , and expecte to restore these properties from INDD file again when
I  open the it again . anyone could tell me how to do this ,thanks in advance.

Why don't you save the properties on the textframes itself by adding a of a persistent interface on the textframes. This way you will be able modify/restore(based on the persisted values) textframes each time the document is opened. Refer to BasicPersistence sample plugin to get an idea on how persistence works in InDesign. Also regarding restoring the UID, i don't quite get the need for it. Every object(well most of them) in InDesign has a unique ID which is called UID, this is allocated automatically and remains the same between document open sessions. I can't see any circumstance where we have a need to apply a particular UID to a particular object.
    Hope this info helps
    Thanks,
