ACE 4710 Deployment Guidance

Hi,
Appreciate there may not be a right or wrong answer here, as this varies from topology to topology, but I’m looking for some notes from the field guidance here from those that have much more deployment experience.
I have a GSS and an ACE, and its the ACE that's primarily giving me something to think about, in terms of placement and what mode to adopt.
The traffic flow will look loosely like this:-
Client---Internet---Firewall---GSS---ACE---Servers
Physically, it's like this. The RED line denotes a boundary, and pretty much anything North of that is not accessible to us, we simply have a L3 trunk between our switches and "their" switches (S3/S4) and talk using EIGRP.
There are other servers in the top tier, some that also require load balancing, some that don’t. Typically, I want to load balance https requests from the internet, to one of the 3 servers in the top half.
I’m not sure what mode to select, routed, one arm? What about placement of the ACE? At the moment, I’ve just configured 1/1 on it and made it part of the MGMT VLAN, it's SVI exists on the S1/S2 switches, so I’m open to change as it's still all in the lab.
What  suggestions for easy deployment can you give me?

As you correctly mentioned there is no right or wrong answer.
Regarding your particular situation I guess you should check these 2 modes :
1) Routed
2) One Arm
Bridge mode doesn't make a lot of sense in your case as anyway you have servers somewhere behind L3 point.
Regarding GSS - it shouldn't be considered as something between FW and ACE , as GSS is just a DNS server, so we can remove it from picture completely (you don't do loadbalacong between GSSes on ACE I presume)
So, back to our 2 modes
In Routed mode, ACE can be considered as a simple L3 router which can do loadbalancing. You can put it as an L3 hop between FW and your routers which are doing EIGRP. So, good thing here - with a right placement you don't need to wary about backward traffic getting to ACE (usually it's important) , bad thing - ACE will need to process all traffic between your 2 sides , even that one which is not supposed to be loadbalanced.
One ARM mode is a bit more flexible , as in this case you redirect to ACE only traffic  which is supposed to be loadbalanced (by applying correct routing in your network) , however you need to make sure that return traffic from real servers comes back to ACE. The only way to do it is basically doing Source NAT on ACE, that real servers receives packets from ACE, not from Internet and send replies back to ACE.
Problem you may hit here , sometimes applications need to know from what IP request came. Here it won't work. For HTTP traffic you can insert IP into HTTP header and then check it on client side. For other protocols - unfortunately client IP will be hidden
Of course you can implement one mode from one set of networks/vlans and another for another set of network/vlans. For comfortable management you may use different contexts on ACE.

  • Ace 4710 active/standby SNMP config

    We have 2 x Ace 4710 deployed in Active/Standby config. Since the configuration mode is disabled on the Standby unit, how can we configure the SNMP settings (such as location etc.) on the standby unit different from the active unit?
    The 2 devices are in physically separated data centers so the SNMP location settings need to be set differently on both units. The standby unit does not allow any configuration.

    Since this is the admin context,  we would better not do this. As i understand correctly, this will turn  off the config sync on the 2 units and we may end up with some issues.
    KM - Correct, you need to manually manage the configurations of both devices. 
    Also,  if at a later stage, we sync the configs again in the admin context, it  will overwrite the different config on the standby unit with that from  the active unit?
    KM - Correct, the device with the lower priority will be overwritten when config-sync is re-enabled.  This is one of the reasons you need to be careful in the Admin context.  For example: Ff the lower priority device has contexts defined that the primary does not, they would be removed when you re-enablethis command.
    Since  my requirement is just the SNMP location config, I do not think i  should go for this; rather i can have some descriptive location setting  identifying the 2 units in cluster mode...
    KM - This would be more ideal than disabling config sync.  You could also put both locations like this:
    snmp-server location "San Jose, CA & Seattle, WA"

  • Need help to Configure Cisco ACE 4710 Cluster Deployment

    Dear Experts,
    I'm newbie for Cisco ACE 4710, and still I'm in learning stage. Meanwhile I got chance at my work place to deploy a Cisco ACE 4710 cluster which should load balance the traffic between  two Application Servers based on HTTP and HTTPS traffic. So I was looking for good deployment guide in Cisco SBA knowledge base then finall found this guide.

    This guide totally fine with my required deployment model. I have same deployment environment as this guide contains with ACE cluster that connects to two Cisco 3750X (Stack) switches. But I have some confusion places in this guide
    This guide follow the "One-armed mode" as a deployment method. But when I go through it further I have noticed that they have configured server VLAN as a 10.4.49.0/24 (all servers reside in it) and Client side VIP also in same VLAN which is 10.4.49.100/24 (even NAT pool also).
    My confusion is, as I have learned about Cisco ACE 4710 one-armed mode deployment method, it should has two VLAN segments, one for Client side which client request come and hit the VIP and then second one for Server side. which means besically two VLANs. So please be kind enough to go through above document then tell me where is wrong, what shoud I need to do for the best. Please this is an urgent, so need your help quickly.

    Since my client needs to access URL ebiz.xxxx.lk which should be resolved by IP 172.25.45.21 (virtual IP) via http (80) before they deploy the app on the two servers I just ran web service on both servers (Linux) and was trying to access http://172.25.45.21 it was working fine and gave me index.html page. Now after my client has deployed the application then when he tries to access the page http://172.25.45.21 he cannot see his main login page. But still my testing web servers are there on both servers when I type http://172.25.45.21 it will get index.html page, but not my client web login page. What can I do for this ?

  • ACE 4710 HTTPS load balance configuration

    Have two ACE 4710 in HA setup. We would like to setup HTTPS loadbalance(actually just a primary and standby configuration in the serverfarm). Initially this would be for Exchange OWA connections but may expand to more HTTPS connections later.
    I know there are several ways to do SSL with the ACE( client, server, end-to-end). I am just wanting to know the easiest way to deploy this? Is a certificate always needed on the ACE for each connection? In HA mode would a certificate be needed for both or does it replicate in some way to the other ACE?
    Any configuration examples would be helpful.

    IF you terminate SSL on the ACE you need certificates and key on ace in the context in which you are doing the termination. The certs and keys need to be installed on the active and standby (manually unless using anm to manage).
    when speaking of SSL
    SSL termination refers to ace terminating SSL and sending to server as clear text
    end to end - ACE terminates SSL (to look into payload to make a loadbalance decision or sticky decision) and then re-encrypts to the server, so to the client ACE is an ssl server and to the server the ace is an ssl client.

    Can an ACE 4710 have , in the same context - servers which are
    a. just being routed to
    b. a set of load-shared servers
    I have been told you may not be able to do this on this version

    I have been on the ACE course and before we install the 4700 box i have been
    asked to set up a test setup.
    This would involve have a context which would have one ip address range and
    a few pcs (pretending to be servers ) and one which would be just routed.
    A colleague of mine seemed to think that something had been said on the course
    to the effect that if the ACE was deployed  in line the you couldnt have some
    of your servers in load-sharing and some just routed on the same subnet and
    in the same context.

  • ANM 5.2 unable to import ACE 4710

    Good day,
    I am currently experiencing a problem while trying to import multiple 4710 ACE Appliances into ANM. ANM version is 5.2 and ACE 4710 Appliances version is 5.1.2. The error message is the same for all Appliances (currently 14, more to be deployed this year, another 12 this year). The management class, policy-map and servcie policy are all in place.
    The error message is below:

    Can you get a show tech-support?
    After that, can you do the following:
    1. "dm status"
    2. "dm reload"
    3. "dm status"
    I think you probably may require to reboot the box but it will be better to open a TAC case for that and check deeper.

  • Setting up additional load balancing on ACE 4710

    I recently deployed ACE 4710 to load balance traffic to a group of web servers. I would like to add additional server farm(s) with different applications on them to ACE 4710 for load balancing the traffic. How can I best achieve this goal? I currently use 3 interfaces out of 4 interfaces (Server Side interface, Client side interface, and Failover interface). Do I need to use my last interface to set up for the new VIP address for a new server farm? Is virtualized service a possible solution? Thank you in advance.

    You can configure trunking so that multiple vlans can exist.
    Also note that the vip ip address does not have to belong to a subnet.
    You could configure a static route on the upstream router pointing the traffic for the new vip to the interface ip address.

  • Cannot Telnet to ACE 4710 after upgrade to A4(2.3)

             I have a pair of ACE 4710s with 12 contexts sharing the load, running A4(2.1). Yesterday I upgraded one of them to A4(2.3)
    now I cannot telnet to the Admin context.Pings ok. I can telnet to other contexts on the box and everything seems to be working ok   
    when i do a " sh telnet"
    comes back with
    No Session Information is available

    telnet maxsessions 16
    Can anybody help?

    further this post, it was not a resource problem as had allocated 5% for the Admin context.
    I up graded IOS Saturday evening, could not Telnet in, tried again on Sunday same result,
    though this morning (Monday) Can now telnet in ok very strange
    I was connecting via the AUX line of a 2851 router to the console port.
    whe I disconnected this morning I saw the following message
    INIT: id "T0" respawning too fast : disabled for  5 minutes
    not sure if this is a 2851 message or an ACE message, but after getting that message is when I was able to Telnet in
    was it a coincidence

  • ACE 4710: Possible to allow a user to clear counters but nothing else?

    Using an ACE 4710 we have a user setup with the Network-Monitor role which allows the user to view config, interface status, etc.  We would also like to allow this user to clear the interface error counters as well, but nothing else.  Is this possible?

    Hello Brandon-
    Network-Monitor only lets you browse outputs, it is a not a role that allows a user to make any changes including clearing stats.  You can create custom roles and domains to get closer to what you want, but you cannot zero in on a single command like that.

    Domains allow you to create containers for objects.  You can place specific rservers, serverfarms, etc. into it - then apply it to a role so that the user assigned to it can only touch those objects.

  • ACE 4710 in bridge mode not working

    I am trying to configure ACE 4710 bridge mode and I am stuck up in physical interface configuration. I have configured gig1/2 of ACE as trunk port and on layer 2 switch I have assigned that interface (gig1/2) to VLAN 11. I tried trunk port also but it got disabled due to BPDU error.
    I am not able to ping servers as well as gateway. Below are the topology and context configuration:

    What is the setup on the switch ? Trunk or access vlan ?
    What is the status of the interface ? up ? down ?

  • ACE 4710 - show stats connection questions

    Hi,
    I have three questions regarding the "show stats connection" command in the ACE 4710:
    1. What is the criteria for a connection to be added to the "Total Connections Failed" counter?
    2. What is the criteria for a connection to be added to the "Total Connections Timed-out" counter?
    3. Is there a command to get more information why the connection was failed or timed-out (e.g. to/from which IP, url accessed etc.)?

    Harry,
    a connection failed if the server did not respond or resonded with a RST.
    As long as the connection gets establised, it is counted as a success.
    The connection timeout counter is incremented when the connection is idle for the configured timeout value or for L7 connections if it does not complete the 3-way handshale within the embryonic timeout interval.
    Since this is clear why those counters are incrementing, the only way to get more information is to capture a sniffer trace to verify if the conditions above are met.

  • ACE 4710. Unable to clear ssh sessions

    Hi.
    Once in the CLI of an ACE 4710, using the command "clear ssh session id" I am unable to clear/kill any of the remote ssh sessions established.
    According to the administration guide, the "clear ssh .." command must clear the sessions, but it does not, or maybe I am missing something?

  • ACE 4710 and mangled HTTP requests

    After replacing a Cisco CSS/SSL  Accelorator and PIX firewall with an ACE 4710 to do load balancing and  SSL encryption behind an ASA firewall we started seeing mangled HTTP  requests in the Apache access logs for the servers in the server farm.  Here is one example:

    Rather  than appearing just after the timestamp, the "POST /register/LServlet"  is tacked on to header information that shouldn't even appear in the  log. Also the first letter in that header information is always missing  (heckoutFlag instead of checkoutFlag in this example). 
    The  mangled request always shows up as a 501 HTTP error and shows up late  in the Apache access logs (timestamp is out of chronogical order) and  always appears with several duplicate POSTs:

    This is occurring for several different URLs and not just the one above and for multiple web browsers.
    The ACE load balances to servers running Tomcat 7 with Apache HTTP server v. 2.2.14.
    A recent ACE software upgrade to A5(2.1) has not fixed the problem.
    Has anyone seen this before?

    What is the current configuration which you got on the ACE?
    Can you shows this output: # show stats http?

  • ACE 4710 Web Optimization Licnesing

    I currently have a 4710 running the 1Gbps package. We are utilizing Application Acceleration and are comg very close to hitting our 10,000 Web Optimization connection limit. I am trying to find out how to upgrade that.
    I see in our license usage an option of ACE-AP-OPT-UP1-K9 but can find no information on this part number. Does anyone know if this is even available and what it brings you connection limit to?

    Unfortunately, ACE-AP-OPT-LIC-K9 is not available on ACE4710 and
    ACE 4710 cannot handle more than 10,000 concurrent connections..
    When you use the ACE to perform a specific set of application
    acceleration and optimization functions, and the ACE reaches the
    maximum of 10,000 concurrent connections, the appliance stops
    accepting any additional concurrent connections until the count
    drops below 10,000.
