ACE Preparation

I'm thinking of taking the ACE for Captivate and wondered if anyone had some advice on where to go to review for the exam or take additional training.

  • RoboHelp 9 Training for ACE preparation

I am trying to find a RoboHelp 9 training class to take as I prepare for certification exam but so far all I've found are three-day courses across the country for over a thousand dollars. There do not seem to be any more affordable options, at least not that I've found the in the Washington DC area. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed - I just need to prepare for this exam. I've been using RH for a year but did not have any formal training (it's all been either self-taught or guidance from a more experienced colleague).
Are there any online courses any of you may know of, or specific test preparation materials that I should consider?

  • ACE: 4710 Policy-Map NAT

Greets. I have a scenario where the rservers are located on two different VLAN's in One Arm Mode.
My question is, am I able to assign two different NAT commands in my policy map (as written below)? Will the NAT command only kick off for the selected rservers vlan?
    policy-map multi-match PM_Loadbalance
      class VIP_Farm
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
        nat dynamic 7 vlan 7
        nat dynamic 741 vlan 741
    Thanks,
    -b

    Hello Brian-
You can apply 2 different NAT statements, yes.
    The way it works:
1.)  A client sends a SYN into a vlan where the vip is applied as a service-policy input.
2.) The ACE matches the SYN to the class in question, the loadbalance policy is checked, and eventually a server in the associated serverfarm is chosen.
3.) ACE prepares to forward the SYN out of the appropriate VLAN based on the route table.
4.) Before the packet leaves, if the packet will egress either vlan 7 or 741, the the packet would be source NATted by the group number mentioned in the statement.  This occurs because the "vlan 7" and "vlan 741" in the NAT statements under the class are filters. If the destination matches either vlan, then the nat group for that statement is used.
    i.e.
    rserver host server_1
    ip address 10.0.0.10
    inservice
    rserver host server_2
    ip address 172.16.35.60
    inservice
    serverfarm host SF_1
    rserver server_1
      inservice
    class-map match-any VIP_80
    2 match virtual-address 172.16.35.80 tcp eq 80
policy map type loadbalance first-match LB
    class class-default
      serverfarm SF_1
    policy map multi-match X
    class VIP_80
      loadbalance policy LB
      loadbalance vip inservice
      nat dynamic 5 vlan 7
      nat dynamic 7 vlan 741
    interface vlan 7
    ip address 172.16.35.2 255.255.255.0
    nat 5 172.16.35.100 172.16.35.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 pat
    service-policy input X
    Interface vlan 741
    ip address 10.0.0.2 255.255.255.0
    nat 7 10.0.0.100 10.0.0.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 pat
    service-policy input X
If a packet comes into either vlan destine to 172.16.35.80 on port 80, it will be balanced to either 10.0.0.10 or 172.16.35.60.  If 10.0.0.10 was chosen, then natpool 7 under vlan 741 would be used because 10.0.0.10 is layer 2 adjacent to vlan 741.  If 172.16.35.60 was chosen, then natpool 5 would be chosen because that server is layer 2 adjacent to vlan 7.

  • Migration from F5 to Cisco ACE

    Hi All,
I am preparing for a migration from F5 to ACE. Can someone help me with a technical approach that I should take to make this migration successful.
    Rishi

    Hi,
    What I would do:
Is it a kind of copy/paste migration?
    Is it layer2/layer3 design?
    - list all IP addresses for the ACE (physical for the vlan interfaces + aliases (VRRP like address))
    - list all VIP addresses + services (fe. http, dns, ftp...)
    - list all real servers that will be used, ordened per VIP (serverfarm)
    - list all probes per real server
    - list all specific exceptions (fe. stickiness, cookie insertion, NAT...)
    - list all network parameters (fe. static routes, default routes, ACLs for management...)
I think this should help you already. The rest depends on the design and complexity that is in your setup.
    Hope this helps.

  • Regarding Adobe Flex ACE certification exam

    Hi,
Iam planning to take Adobe Flex ACE certification exam in 2 weeks . Iam currentlydeveloping web based application in social Retail 2.0 in Flex 3.0
But I have no practical knowledge in Adobe AIR.  I planning to read theory alone regarding AIR modules. Is it possible to get thru the flex certification if i dont have practical knowledge in AIR ?

    Hi,
Have you tried out the Attest 1.5 AIR app? It's a sample exam engine for the Flex 3/AIR Certification that can help you prepare for your certification.
The types of questions shown for the AIR APIs etc should be fairly representative of the types of questions and content you will need to know for the actual exam. At the end of your exams, the questions you got wrong will have feedback and links to open up documentation to help you understand why you got a question wrong. We are currently adding more questions/exams to it as well as some UI tweaks, so you should be seeing a 2.0 version coming soon !! It's FREE for developers, and you can install it here: http://software.pxldesigns.com/attest/
Hope it helps ~ please feel free to provide feedback to Dave or myself either at PXL Design's site or mine, thanks!

Adobe Certified Expert (ACE) exams are much more comprehensive.  To pass this level, you will need to be very familiar with:
    HTML,
    CSS,
    client-side scripts,
    server-side scripts,
    connecting to databases,
    the various behaviors panels,
    working with forms,
    working with Templates,
and all other aspects of the DW software version you are being tested on.
In contrast, the Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) exam is more of an intro level exam & not nearly as complex.  It measures basic proficiency with your chosen product.  As such the preparation is not too rigorous either. Below you will find the ACA Prep Guides for DW CS3 - CS6.

  • Active FTP failing on ACE module

I've setup FTP as show in the configuration examples.  Passive FTP works fine but for some reason active FTP breaks.
The client reported that he can authenticate to the FTP server with no problem.  However when he issues a FTP command such as LIST the connection just hangs.  Eventually he has to abort the connection.  10.24.32.75 is my source NAT address.
    PORT 10,24,32,75,239,165
    200 PORT command successful.
    LIST
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls.
    425 Can't open data connection.
When I look at the sniff trace between the NAT and server I see the ftp server initiate the ftp-data connection on port 20.  But then the ACE receives it and sends a reset back to the ftp server.
Anyone know of commands that can be executed that can show details as to why the connection gets reset by the ACE?
I have a TAC case opened but still waiting for an engineer to respond.  Just thought I'd post to see if anyone else has experienced this.

It sounds like you probably didn't configure FTP INSPECT rule for this VIP.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/app_ntwk_services/data_center_app_services/ace_appliances/vA1_7_/configuration/security/guide/appinsp.html#wp1310518
The ACE performs the FTP command inspection process as follows:
•Prepares a dynamic secondary data connection. The channels are allocated in response to a file upload, a file download, or a directory listing event and must be prenegotiated. The port is negotiated through the PORT or PASV commands.

  • ACE SSL - Modifying certs and keys

I'm having a problem updating the certs and keys I have in my ssl-proxy service.
My cert is about to expire and I've purchased a new cert. I've uploaded the new cert and key, but I still see the old cert when I go to the VIP with my browser. I thought that by deleting the proxy-service and re-adding I could get the ACE to recognize that it's got new certs but that didn't seem to work.
Is there a trick to make the ACE see the new certs? Does it cache the certs instead of reading them from flash? What's going on here.
    Thanks!

I changed my certs hot while the application was still running worked like a charm.
    What i did was.
    - import the new certificate into the crypto store (pkcs12)
    - prepare a textfile with the necessary commands
    no key old
    key new
    no cert old
    cert new
    - paste the commands into the running config.
I had several Customers and Application Admins test the App. while i was changing certs. They didn't even notice something happened. After approx. 60 seconds all new connections were using the new cert old connections were using the old cert. No trouble at all.
And yes the ACE caches the certs if i am not mistaken.
If you want to make sure that it works just create a test context or try it on a test farm first. That's what i did prior to changing the certs and the config on the production enviroment.
    Hope it helps.

  • Photoshop CS4 ACE exam

The Adobe Photoshop CS4 ACE exam is available for scheduling at the Pearson Vue website since last tuesday.
I'm waiting for the preparation guide. How long it takes for Adobe to release a prep guide since the exam is out?

Was this ever resolved?  I am experiencing the same thing the day after passing.  Wondering if there is a lead time?

  • ACE Certification Query

    Hey,
I'm interested in giving the ACE exam for Photoshop CS4 but I don't know how should I prepare.I already have the Exam guide and it only has few sample questions. Please some one suggest me any book or blog or anything which can be helpful in the preparation.I also wanted to ask, till when the exam will be available ?
    Thanks.

    One need the knowledge of
using the application and the theoretical knowledge of the application
as well. I don't remember having to answer questions based on theoretical knowledge of the application (perhaps you mean something else?).
Many questions I had on Ps Ace exams were about keyboard
shortcuts, positions of certain elements within Ps interface etc.
I think an "expert" should know keyboard shortcuts and how to assign them as well. Likewise, knowing where commands are located is essential. As I said, most people find commands intuitively or use KBSCs so much that they forget where commands are located.
    On
the last exam for CS5 I had loads of photography questions that
required the knowledge of Photography not Photoshop so without
experience in photography I wouldn't know the answers.
There was a time when you could get by without knowing anything about photography but since the advent of digital photography and the addition of Camera Raw and features such as Photomerge and Merge To HDR, you need to know something about how to originate files in order to process images, make the best panoramas and HDR images.
One can look at the Ace Exam Preps that can be found online, they may help as well.
One can but you will need the ability to desipher the topics and time to find appropriate pages in Help. For example, how many people will know what's meant by the following:
    •    Given a scenario, use Refine Edge/Mask to capture increased detail both soft and hard edges.
Above is the very first topic in the recertification Prep Guide for Photoshop CS5 ...If you get stuck at the first topic...

  • ACE default handling of the TCP Window Scale option

Can someone tell me a reasonable explanation why the default action of the ACE is to clear the window-scale option in SYN-segments? We were long baffled why some customers (specifically the ones with larger latencies) were suffering from poor TCP transfer speeds and resets. Packet captures confirmed the fact that the ACE was clearing window-scale options, causing the advertised receive windows to be remarkably small as the scaling factors were removed.
Isn't intermediate tampering with the window-scale option a widely known source for TCP performance problems? Window scaling is after all a widely used TCP extension. That's why I'm curious to know why such default behaviour from the ACE.
Our problem was of course finally resolved by explicitly allowing the window-scale option using a parameter map.

    HI Timo,
As you know if you allows the ACE to use a window scale factor that essentially increases the size of the TCP send and receive buffers. The sender specifies a window scale factor in a SYN segment that determines the send and receive window size for the duration of the connection.
You have defined tcp-options scale allow in the parameter map but have not specified to which scale factor this should scale to.
The TCP window scaling feature adds support for the Window Scaling option in RFC 1323. It is recommend that increasing the window size to improve TCP performance in network paths with large bandwidth, long-delay characteristics. This type of network is called a long fat network (LFN).
But you have not configure a TCP window-scale factor which is essential for network paths with high-bandwidth, long-delay characteristics, using the "set tcp window-scale " command.
The window scaling extension expands the definition of the TCP window to 32 bits and then uses a scale factor to carry this 32-bit value in the 16-bit window field of the TCP header.
You can increase the window size to a maximum scale factor of 14.
Typical applications use a scale factor of 3 when deployed in LFNs but in you case if this is a LFN you are using default which is 0.
So here in your case you can select how much scale factor is needed to be defined from the range 0-14 , otherwise even if you have defined in the tcp-options windlow-scale allow, but as you have not define to what factor it should scale to , so it will always use the default scale factor which is 0, means no scaling at all.
To set the TCP window-scale factor to 3, add the second command as well in your parameter map:
    host1/Admin(config-parammap-conn)# tcp-options window-scale allow        ---> Defined already
host1/Admin(config-parammap-conn)# set tcp window-scale 3                      ----> Needed to be added else "default scale factor 0" will be taken
You can check in the following URL at cisco docs wiki for how ACE handles Connection at Layer 4 (L4) and Layer 7 (L7):
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_(ACE)_Module_Troubleshooting_Guide,_Release_A2(x)_--_Troubleshooting_Connectivity
Here are the details of how a tcp-options scale windows works:
The window scale extension expands the definition of the TCP
window to 32 bits and then uses a scale factor to carry this 32- bit
value in the 16-bit Window field of the TCP header (SEG.WND in RFC-793).
The scale factor is carried in a new TCP option, Window Scale.
This option is sent only in a SYN segment (a segment with the SYN bit on),
hence the window scale is fixed in each direction when a connection is opened.
(Another design choice would be to specify the window scale in every TCP segment.
It would be incorrect to send a window scale option only when the scale factor changed,
since a TCP option in an acknowledgement segment will not be delivered reliably
(unless the ACK happens to be piggy-backed on data in the other direction).
Fixing the scale when the connection is opened has the advantage of lower
overhead but the disadvantage that the scale factor cannot be changed
during the connection.) The maximum receive window, and therefore the
scale factor, is determined by the maximum receive buffer space.
In a typical modern implementation, this maximum buffer space is set
by default but can be overridden by a user program before a
TCP connection is opened. This determines the scale factor,
and therefore no new user interface is needed for window scaling.
Window Scale Option The three-byte Window Scale option
may be sent in a SYN segment by a TCP.
    It has two purposes:
    (1) indicate that the TCP is prepared to do both send and receive window scaling, and
    (2) communicate a scale factor to be applied to its receive window.
Thus, a TCP that is prepared to scale windows should send the option,
even if its own scale factor is 1. The scale factor is limited to
a power of two and encoded logarithmically,
so it may be implemented by binary shift operations.
    TCP Window Scale Option (WSopt):
    Kind: 3 Length: 3 bytes
    +---------+---------+---------+
    | Kind=3 |Length=3 |shift.cnt|
    +---------+---------+---------+
This option is an offer, not a promise; both sides must send
Window Scale options in their SYN segments to enable window
scaling in either direction. If window scaling is enabled,
then the TCP that sent this option will right-shift its true
receive-window values by 'shift.cnt' bits for transmission in
SEG.WND. The value 'shift.cnt' may be zero (offering to scale,
while applying a scale factor of 1 to the receive window).
This option may be sent in an initial segment (i.e., a
segment with the SYN bit on and the ACK bit off).
It may also be sent in a segment, but only if a Window
Scale op- tion was received in the initial segment.
A Window Scale option in a segment without a SYN bit should be ignored.
The Window field in a SYN (i.e., a or ) segment itself is never scaled.
    Using the Window Scale Option
A model implementation of window scaling is as follows
All windows are treated as 32-bit quantities for storage in
the connection control block and for local calculations.
This includes the send-window (SND.WND) and the receive- window
(RCV.WND) values, as well as the congestion window.
    * The connection state is augmented by two window shift counts,
Snd.Wind.Scale and Rcv.Wind.Scale, to be applied to the
incoming and outgoing window fields, respectively.
    * If a TCP receives a segment containing a Window Scale
option, it sends its own Window Scale option in the segment.
    * The Window Scale option is sent with shift.cnt = R, where R
is the value that the TCP would like to use for its receive window.
    * Upon receiving a SYN segment with a Window Scale option containing
    shift.cnt = S, a TCP sets Snd.Wind.Scale to S and sets Rcv.Wind.Scale
to R; otherwise, it sets both Snd.Wind.Scale and Rcv.Wind.Scale to zero.
    * The window field (SEG.WND) in the header of every incoming segment,
with the exception of SYN segments, is left-shifted by Snd.Wind.Scale
    bits before updating SND.WND: SND.WND = SEG.WND << Snd.Wind.Scale
(assuming the other conditions of RFC793 are met,
and using the "C" notation "<<" for left-shift).
    * The window field (SEG.WND) of every outgoing segment, with the
exception of SYN segments, is right-shifted by
    Rcv.Wind.Scale bits: SEG.WND = RCV.WND >> Rcv.Wind.Scale.
TCP determines if a data segment is "old" or "new" by testing
whether its sequence number is within 2**31 bytes of the left
edge of the window, and if it is not, discarding the data as "old".
To insure that new data is never mistakenly considered old and vice- versa,
the left edge of the sender's window has to be at most 2**31 away
from the right edge of the receiver's window. Similarly with the
sender's right edge and receiver's left edge. Since the right and
left edges of either the sender's or receiver's window differ by
the window size, and since the sender and receiver windows can be
out of phase by at most the window size, the above constraints imply
    that
2 * the max window size must be less than 2**31,
or max window < 2**30 Since the max window is 2**S
(where S is the scaling shift count) times at most 2**16 - 1
    (the maximum unscaled window),
the maximum window is guaranteed to be < 2*30 if S <= 14.
Thus, the shift count must be limited to 14 (which allows windows of 2**30 = 1 Gbyte).
If a Window Scale option is received with a shift.cnt value exceeding 14,
the TCP should log the error but use 14 instead of the specified value.
The scale factor applies only to the Window field as transmitted
in the TCP header; each TCP using extended windows will maintain
the window values locally as 32-bit numbers. For example,
the "congestion window" computed by Slow Start and Congestion Avoidance
is not affected by the scale factor, so window scaling will not introduce
    quantization into the congestion window.
Hope it will resolve your issue, else get back to us for further discussion.
    Best regards,
    Sachin Garg

  • Studying for ACE Exam

    Hello all,
I can't afford to take classes to prepare for the Adobe
RoboHelp ACE exam, and my company won't pay for classes either.
Therefore, what's the best way to study without taking courses?
Should I buy Siegel's RH 7 book? If I study everything here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/robohelp/,
would that help me? I was also thinking of combing the online Help
for RH 7. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks in advance.

    Hi LaKisha
The best way IMHO is to simply play with RoboHelp. Be
familiar with all its nooks and crannies. The Siegel book *MAY*
help you but it wasn't designed to prepare for the exam. It was
designed to help a total noob learn RoboHelp enough to be
    productive with it.
    Cheers... Rick
