Acer Aspire E 13 idle fan noise

Hi. I have just bought an Acer Aspire E13 (ES1-311-C46Y). I like the computer except one thing. The fan makes an hight pitched/ high frekvent idle fan noise. Is it suppose to do this when the computer is completly new?//Mattias Ipsonius

The fan should not be overly loud, it sounds like it might have an issue. I would recommend you contact the Acer technical support in your area and see what your options are.

Thanks. I gave this a shot, but i'm still getting the same temps. There's plenty of airflow around the laptop as it is on a stand which raises the back of the laptop. I also noticed, last night, that there was a faint, but audible whine that I never noticed before. Maybe I'm just being ultra paranoid now, but I like knowing that my hardware is functioning as intended. I'm fearful that the above-average idle temps are a precursor to an upcoming hardware failure.
I also have iStat Menus installed and i'm currently getting 2500-3183rpm. I currently only have 6 apps open (safari, adium, preview, mail, photoshop, and itunes). No flash movies loaded and one 6MB PSD file open in Photoshop. Activity Monitor currently shows the highest CPU percentage at 5.8 (safari).

Quad Idle Fan noise?

I own several powerbooks and recently bought my first PowerMac.
The Powerbooks are silent.
The Quad makes fan noise. It's not very loud, but the fans are clearly running. I can feel cool air from the front vents. Normal?
I have installed a second internal drive (Hitachi) and 4 gigs of Crucial RAM.
The machine was silent until I loaded on Photoshop, FCP and several other programs. But I really haven't used any of the programs yet.
Since I have not done any serious work on the machine yet- so I am not sure if this normal idle noise or something else.
Should an idle Quad be fully silent?

My Quad is much noiser than I expected. My PowerBook can barely be heard. My iMac (since replaced by the Power Mac) was Rev. A and suffered from the known noise problems but was quieter than the Power Mac. Are these fan speeds typical? (Obtained from Marcel Bresink's Hardware Monitor utility.)

Macbook Pro Retina 13" continuous idle fan noise

Hello,
My MBP has recently started emitting a constant noise as if the fan is rubbing. Have a listen to the noise here: https://soundcloud.com/adam-wilkie/fan-noise-2/s-VnBbe
It sounds mechanical and is constant from startup to shutdown and is really really annoying. I can hear it most of the time and it is especially audible in a quite room.
I have taken it too the Genius bar twice and they have run their diagnostic tests (which said everything was ok) and have cleaned it out but the noise continues.
Has anyone else had this issue?
If anyone could offer me some advice that would be great!

U840-10Q high fan noise in idle

Hi,
about month ago I've bought Toshiba U840-10Q ultrabook. After day of useing, I've returned it for RMA, because of broken WiFi led. During the RMA I reported to Toshiba Service that in idle fan noise is unacceptably high. They ignored it and only changed the WiFi led. So what can I do with that unbearable fan noise?
I found some posts on this forum, where people complain on this ultrabook's fan noise. Well, the problem is that fan turns on when laptop is quite cool (about 45-50 degrees) and stay turned on even if the temperature drops down to about 40 degrees (in idle). So I think it's software issue, maybe BIOS issue. On the other hand maybe it's a hardware issue, related with fan. Because the main problem is buzzing fan noise, which is not acceptable in silent environment. For now I can't use this ultrabook, because of that noise.
I have the latest BIOS v1.60. Cooling vents are clean (they cleaned them in service).
Should I return it again to RMA? Or should I sell this ultrabook and never again buy a Toshiba?

A noisy fan is usually a hardware issue.
Therefore if you are actually using canned air to keep the fan and vents clean from dust and grime, and you have a cooling pad and it is still noisy, then it is probably a dysfunctional fan.
Now you can send it back in if you have a warranty on it. If you don't you, could replace the fan yourself. If you choose to do this, there needs to be further discussion.
Let us know if you are using canned air: remember spray for only 2 to 3 sec at a time to prevent any harm to your hardware.
Noise from fans can come from the dust particals that get into the fan bearings.
These fans are so small that it does behoove us all who have laptops to take care of our hardware regularly to prevent damage.
Just so you understand, fans and overheating is true for any brand of laptop, not just Toshiba.
I have been in this business for many years and have worked with every brand of computer known to man;
I will tell you in all my years I have only used Toshiba because of its reliability and stability.
I am not an employee of Toshiba either.
I am speaking from pure experience.

New Acer Aspire v17 Black Edition GTX 960m Overheating Problems?

I just bought and received Acer Aspire v17 Black Edition and started playing some games on it.I always check the bottom of the laptop once in a while with my hand to make sure it isn't overheating.When I checked after some gaming today, the surface was extremely hot so I downloaded the Core Temp software to check what the exact temperatures were. I found out that the temperature of all 4 cores ranged from 85 Degrees to 95 degrees celsius when gaming. I've done some research online and was informed that temperature at this range have the risk of causing internal damage. CoolBoost is on, Active cooling is on. Core Temp might be displaying the wrong temperature anways. Is this normal or abnormal?

I have to agree with Pocopony22. I think the main issue in cooling effectiveness here is the form factor of the case. Being so thin I imagine there isn't much space to allow cooler ambient air to convey the heat out of the system. Although I often wonder why manufacturers don't utilize some dynamics like air multiplication and a "jet" engine effect to use the thinness to create a more forceful air flow... I'm sure there is some reason I am not thinking of since I do not design notebooks for a living. LOL. Anyhow based the data sheets for the 4720hq, the safe max operating temp is 100C and while the 960M is not listed in data sheets I suspect it could handle 90/95C safely. While I personally do not condone such temperatures nor would I settle for those, in theory the processors are safe, the only thing I question is the boards and other components near these since everything is so tight. In the end would I run my CPU at 100C for 4 or 5 hours? No way, I would do like blackice55, throttle the CPU myself (since that way I can adjust my efforts based on a controlled throttling, rather than having to adjust on the fly if the CPU throttles on it's own) and keep the temps down a bit. Follow these simple guidelines to extend the longevity of your device: Play in area with cool ambient temps, not outside on a summer day.Use a cooler unit. Find one with fans that you can adjust the airflow (if you use your cooler on more than one device) or buy with an appropriate air flow direction based on the system cooling flow.Utilize CPU throttling in a controlled manner.Give your computer a rest once every few hours. Let the CPU idle and cool before shutting off. It doesn't take long with the fans running, but can remain hot significantly longer if shut down immediately.BUY ADH warranty. Spend a few hundred bucks now so you don't have to spend another 1-2k later...Device dies from not following 1-5, always have a contingency plan. Mac Pro 2x2,8 Ghz - Fan Noise - Please help evaluate

Hi Guys,
Since yesterday, I'm the proud owner of a Mac Pro 2x2,8 - Really happy - really nice machine.
However I'm slightly irritated by the posts I've read all over the internet, saying that you can't hear the fans of this machine at all in idle.
As you may have guessed, my box is not silent at all - it is quite quiet compared to other noisy PCs, yes, but no match for the previous iMac 24" which it replaced. You could hardly hear the iMac versus now the Mac Pro... you notice it's there... sitting under the desk - audible.
I realize that fan noise is highly subjective, and I'm using the Mac in a completely silent environment. No AC, no nothing. I've tried the following: removing the hard drive and silencing the graphics card... Upon bootup the Mac would quickly "turbo" it's fans and then go to it's normal state. The loudest fan (which is drowning out all other noise) is the one at the bottom front (CPU?).
Looking at istat, it's in normal parameters (500rpm or so) and doesn't move up or down...
Comparing it to other devices, it would sound like a PS3 when having played 1 hour (fan speed at level 2-3) or an (quiet) xbox in idle mode (dvd not spinning). I know... geeky comparisons
Now, again - not close to my interpretations of "whisper quiet" "can't hear it at all"... "only hear it when I put my ear to the grill" "sounds like it's cooled passively"
Which makes me think that either
a) people out there are deaf /
or
b) my Mac needs a closer look by a genius

you might have the same problem i have. I have the 2.8 octo 2008 mac pro. and it used to be whisper quiet. I was amazed. But recently as in the last few weeks the graphics card fan has become audible. I put in an e sata adapter last week and while inside the mac pro I took a look at the fan to see if it was dusty or visibly distressed. Nope. Couldn't find anything wrong with it. So now i'm just dealing with the noise. Which is too bad cause I really really really don't like fan noise. But the air conditioners on most of the time now so I really can't complain about a little fan noise compared to the ac's grumbling.
but i'd like to know if others are having this problem

T530: Unbearable fan noise

Probably similar to this thread, the T530 I recently received has fan noise issues. I've invested considerable time in solving this, but found that a solution can be achieved with reasonable effort only by Lenovo:
Introduction:
Most ThinkPad models do not provide the operating system (or the user) the ability to set the fan speed directly (e.g. in rounds per minute) or in a fine-grained way (e.g. as a percentage of maximum speed). Instead, there are "fan speed levels", usually 9 levels (level 0 through level 7 as well as the level "disengaged"). For each level, a particular fan speed is defined and the Embedded Controller tries to achieve this particular fan speed by measuring the fan speed and adjusting the electrical properties of the fan (e.g. voltage or pulse length or something like this).
The fan noise problem:
Every time the internal temperature sensor reaches 50 °C or so, the fan starts with about 1900 rounds/minute and then quickly goes to about 2737 rounds/minute, where it is loud. Then it takes about 20 seconds, the temperature drops to 45 °C, then the fan is switched off. Then, after maybe other 30 seconds, the cycle repeats and the fan is switched on again, ...
There are major problems with this behaviour, because:
The fan is not running continously, but pulsating.
The fan is running at level 1 at a much higher speed than needed, creating unnecessary noise.
I have measured the individual fan speeds for individual fan speed levels:
The fan speeds at different levels are as follows:
Level 0: 0 rounds/minute
Level 1: 2737 rounds/minute
Level 2: 2944 rounds/minute
Level 3: 3033 rounds/minute
Level 4: 3074 rounds/minute
Level 5: 3597 rounds/minute
Level 6: 3773 rounds/minute
Level 7: 3773 rounds/minute
Level disengaged: 4754 rounds/minute
Solution draft:
A minimum solution to the problem above would be introducing another fan speed level between 0 rounds/minute and 2737 rounds/minute, with about 1900 rounds/minute. The reason this makes a difference is that there is a fundamental difference between laminar flow and turbulent flow, where the laminar flow makes nearly no noise and the turbulent flow makes a lot of noise. (Whether an airflow is laminar or turbulent is easiest influencable by affecting its speed.)
As you can see on the observed mapping from fan speed level to fan speed, level 6 and level 7 map to the same speed.
Thus, no particular fan speed would be lost if the mapping would be changed to the following:
Level 0: 0 rounds/minute
Level 1: 1900 rounds/minute
Level 2: 2737 rounds/minute
Level 3: 2944 rounds/minute
Level 4: 3033 rounds/minute
Level 5: 3074 rounds/minute
Level 6: 3597 rounds/minute
Level 7: 3773 rounds/minute
Level disengaged: 4754 rounds/minute
Solution implementation by user is impossible:
The problem, however, is that, while a user can decide which fan speed level should be active at a particular time, the user cannot decide which fan speed should actually be achieved for a particular level. Thus, the user can either decide to have 0 rounds/minute (which is not particularly sustainable, because the equipment becomes hotter and hotter) or to have 2737 rounds/minute (which is not particularly sustainable either, because both the user and other people arund the user's Lenovo computer are distracted from work).
The mapping from fan speed level to fan speed is actually stored in the Embedded Controller Programm ("ECP"). This Embedded Controller Programm is freely changeable or configurable by the user. Only Lenovo has the source code to this Embedded Controller Programm, and actually only Lenovo may know how to disassemble such a binary Embedded Controller Program in case the user wanted to change it. Thus, even advanced users cannot fix this problem by fixing it where it should be fixed.
It should be noted that, because fan speed is a long lasting issue at Lenovo, a third party has been even developed an after-market hardware solution: TPFC. However, this solution probably voids the warranty, and it work arounds the problem at the wrong place, and it costs time and money and effort to actually install it.

Thus, this is my call to Lenovo to fix this problem (at least for the T530 series, but probably W530, T430 are also affected). Ideally, the solution should be as follows:
Change the Embdedded Controller Program such that the mapping from fan speed level to fan speed is as follows:
Level 0: 0 rounds/minute (no noise level)
Level 1: 1500 rounds/minute (low noise level, sweet spot)
Level 2: 1700 rounds/minute (low noise level, sweet spot)
Level 3: 1900 rounds/minute (low noise level, sweet spot)
Level 4: 2100 rounds/minute (some noise level)
Level 5: 2600 rounds/minute (high noise level)
Level 6: 3100 rounds/minute (high noise level)
Level 7: 3773 rounds/minute (high noise level)
Level disengaged: 4754 rounds/minute (high noise level)
The reasons for this fan speed design are as follows:
The "sweet spot" where both the fan will run most of the time and where the user would not complain is between 1500 rounds/minute and 2100 rounds/minute. If the fan needs to be faster to keep the system cooled, then the user is likely to run the system with considerable load to CPU or GPU. In this case, there is no option to reduce the fan speed, but also in this case, the user probably accepts the fan noise for the computing power delivered.
The "sweet spot" in terms of CPU load is where the users do not accept fan noise while actually generating only minute CPU load (e.g. during web browsing or writing documents, where the CPU and the GPU is mostly idle). For many users, this is their normal working state (e.g. working in a quiet office, a very quiet library, a quiet bedroom, a quiet boardroom, ...). These scenarios are where Lenovo ThinkPads currently fail to deliver, unnecessarily
The "sweet spot" needs higher resolution (more fan levels allocated to these fan speeds), because slightly different load patterns may make it necessary to go from one level to the next higher level, but then the next level still should be bearable. Conversely, the higher levels (e.g. from 2600 rounds/minute on) do not need such a high resolution, because for most of the users, these levels will be only attained rarely anyway, and then they are accepting the noise.
Currently, there is no fan speed level at the sweet spot. With the proposed fix, there would be 3 fan speed levels at the sweet spot, with a neighbouring fan speed level (2100 rounds/minute) still being bearable when considering the performance delivered.
There is no fan speed level below 1500 rounds/minute. This is ok, because the fan is nearly inaudible at this speed anyway, and below a certain speed, there is a risk (depending on the fan) for the fan to actually not rotate at all (e.g. due to friction).
How much time and effort would Lenovo need for fixing the problem:
The Lenovo engineer responsible for the Embedded Controller Program of the T530 should need less than one day to change the source code of the Embedded Controller Program and to recompile it. The engineer may need one additional day to test this program (e.g. for different types of fans), and there may be a need for an additional day to release the update to the BIOS and ECP. All in all, Lenovo should not need more than 3 engineer-days (maybe worth 1800 USD) to fix the problem.
Why Lenovo should fix the problem:
Probably the whole current T series (T530,T520,T430,T420) as well as the current W series (W530,W520) fails the users in any of these scenarios (among others):
User working in a quiet office.
User working in a quiet library.
User working in a quiet bedroom.
User working in a quiet boardroom.
Thus, the Lenovo T series is currently not usable for many business users and almost all students. This problem should cost millions of USD of revenue, while fixing it would cost it maybe 1800 USD.
Incidental remark: Lenovo subsidiary can do better:
Lenovo has bought the majority of the Germany consumer electronics company Medion. Medion currently offers a consumer level notebook "E7222" for 499€ including German VAT. Despite of this low price, this notebook delivers very good fan control (that is: the notebook is nearly silent when the CPU is near-idle). (However, being consumer-grade, it does not offer a docking-station or a FullHD screen or WWAN.)
What will I personally do:
Some weeks ago, I had a powerful W530. I returned it due to fan noise for cash refund. Now I have the T530 (Serial number: R9RRF26) which has exactly the same problem. The deadline until I can legally request a cash refund runs until 2012-09-07. I hereby ask Lenovo:
To fix the problem and release an ECP or BIOS update until 2012-09-06 (it is doable, see above) or
if the problem cannot be fixed in this time (e.g. due to bureaucracy): provide me with a written statement (e.g. e-mail or forum post is sufficient) that my legal cash refund deadline (German law: §355 BGB) will be voluntarily extended by Lenovo (to some date Lenovo thinks it needs to fix the problem).
If none of the above happens, I will have to return the T530 as well. This is the 2nd chance Lenovo has gotten from me, there will be no 3rd chance. I would have to turn to Fujitsu (they do have business-class machines with big batteries, FullHD, WWAN) and they probably have better fan control.

Thank you for the considerable thought that you put into your summation / analysis and proposal for a change.
I don't agree that you are wasting your time as we did make EC changes on the X220 and T420s to change fan behavior (along with several other systems). However, not all customers agree that the changes made the system behave the way they wanted and were completely satisfied (hence some of the dissenting opinions expressed here).
We are interested in feedback on T530, W530, T430 fan concerns and we are investigating. It is possible that a future change might be made, but I cannot say for certain that it will, nor can we commit to making this change within 4 days (2 now remaining) from your original posting.

2 years of this fan noise....check my temperature?

so i've been battling the dreaded imac g5 (first gen) fan noise for the entire 2 years I've had the computer now. one midplane (out of 3 now? 4?) almost fixed the problem, but it had other problems. For the past year I have just let it go as it was in a room with a noisy window air conditioner and a noisy PC. Now I've moved and am back in a quiet room and the noise is unbearable.
Took it back to the apple store but they said it wasn't noisy (and it seemed less noisy there, not near as much "whine", but that could have just been all the ambient noise as well - music, crowded store, etc)
but my real question here is what temp should the imac g5 (1.8ghz) run at? at idle my CPU usually sits at about 155, under load about 165-170. this is acceptable right?
maybe its just a sign to give up on this machine and be an early adopter with the new mac pros and get to deal with whatever engineering probs are there (had the cube before this, bought right when it came out, cracked case, flaky sensor, temp problems, etc) or learn my lesson and wait another 9 months or so
I'm also having USB problems, but Apple told me they couldn't replace it (logic board) because my headphone jack is broken and that part isn't under warranty even though the USB is. sigh

Hi,
I had the same problem, one of my fans was making a loud noise even when my computer was just idling. It can occur because you dropped the computer, thus damaging one of the fans, or the fan broke down partially. I took mine to the Apple genius bar and they ordered a new fan for me and installed it in under a week (all covered by warranty). This is likely a hardware and not software issue, the only way for a fix is taking it to a genius bar.

DM3 (New 2010 model) - FAN NOISE - Constantly Running LOUD

This is the first HP to use "Cool Sense" technology. Yes, it is cool but at the expense of FAN NOISE. The fan runs constantly even when Thermal Assistant is set to "Quietest." Just an open browser window at 0-10% cpu makes the fan run all the time! PLEASE READ my Notes below.
After monitoring the temps, the fan still needlessly runs on medium speed even after the temperatures drop (CoreTemp gives [core#0 28C & core#1 37C] at idle powersaver). Anyone can comment on the 9C difference?
I believe hp still need to tweak the "Thermal Assistant" fan controller or raise the temperature thresholds. PLEASE HELP - VERY ANNOYING PROBLEM
Note: Latest F.08 bios & Turned OFF "Fan Always On." Computer is NEW (no dust). Used on Tabletop. Used both powersaver mode & balanced.

Try doing a SMC AND PRAM reset by:
1. Turn off your iMac and unplug everything from it for 30 seconds.
2. Plug in the power cord, keyboard and mouse only.
3. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Option, Command, P & R keys until you hear the second gong then release the keys. Your machine will start up normally, then check for the issues you are having.

Suspend problem ACER Aspire

Hello!I have an ACER Aspire 5920G and running arch linux with KDEmod 4.1, smoothly except for some minor problems...The most important of them is that the computer cannot suspend when I set it to suspend (to disk or to ram) eg. after 20 minutes.When I press the power button or pm-suspend, or any manual way it suspends....It won't suspend after the time runs out!I have powerdevil and guidance power manager installed...I also don't understand what's the purpose of power control in system settings->Display, since it also does nothing when enabled...please help me I need my computer to suspend when idle...Thank you very much!

I just realised that if I configure it from powerdevil to suspend after 1 minute, ita does suspend...But eg after 5 minutes it does not.I believe tha the screensaver causes it to not suspend as it starts after 3 minutes...Can you please tell me what to do to whitelist the screensaver for powerdevil?(if that's the problem...)

X 200 fan noise after upgrading to windows 7 32 bit

last month iv'e upgraded from win vista 32 bit to win 7 32 bit, ever since (that day exactly!) i did that i'm facing a lot more fan noise then before the upgrade, noise that bothers me.
it seems like the fan is starting to work more often then before, and besides that it never goes into idle but continue to work all the, regardless of the load on the computer.
until now iv'e tried to update anything possible (including bios) , i have reinstalled the win 7 with a clean install (the first time i used the update option) and again updated everything possible, that didn't solve the problem.
iv'e also tried to change the power manger options regarding the fan and cooling policy. the only thing that made any change is the "reduce noise dynamically" but that option also changes the overall performence of my system,so that's not a solution for me.
iv'e also read in a couple of places that turning down the wifi or access connection helped someone, but not for...
any ideas what to do next?

i've got the same problem. upgraded from a silent windows xp to windows 7, and there's the noise.
have you found any solution to tune it down?

Updated to Mavericks and loud fan noise

Just done a clean install of Mac OS X Mavericks, updated fine, everything went well.
however most of the time, my macbook pro fan noise would go really loud for 5-10mins even in idle or if im on the internet just browsing.
this has not happened ever on mountain lion.
its really weird.
Does anybody know how to fix this? or is this a bug and would i have to wait for a software update?

I am having the same issue, constant loud fan noise in my Mac book pro. Below are the specs:
"MacBook Pro
13-inch, Mid 2010
Processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
Software OS X 10.9 (13A603)"
And CPU is 90% idle.
I tried to reset the SMC using the steps:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Plug your Mac in, if not already plugged in.
3. Press (left side) Shift-Control-Option & the power button at the same time.
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Inaddition, i have reinstalled OS and reset PRAM memory but the problem still exists.
It really feels annoying with the fan sound. Could someone give a fix.

PPC QUAD Owners -- Got Bad Fan Noise w/Logic (or just in general)?

I'm having a terrific noise problem with my Quad's (now) overactive fans. When I first got the Quad this was not a problem. Seems to have started after an update from 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 or 10.4.5. With respect to Logic, the fans go into hyperdrive (blowing relatively cool air) after I launch Logic, even when it's sitting idle with a bare-bones autoload song loaded (no plugs at all). When I quit Logic, the fans start to calm down but it takes sveral minutes to settle down completely.
Even accessing the dock or loading up this forum on Safari will cause the fans to rev, but Logic is the thing that seems to trigger this behavior the most -- and the worst.
Anyone else with a Quad is experiencing the same thing? Particularly with Logic running?
I'd be grateful if anyone can offer offer troubleshooting advice. Here's some info:
- reinstalled the system software numerous times, no change
- all Apple RAM installed (6 G)
- running 2 monitors, but with only one connected, no difference
- using wall current or UPS current makes no difference

Thanks for the continued feedback/replies. Will be living with the computer/hair dryer combo for another week as the Apple store techs in my area are all booked up until after Labor Day. Gotta say, tho, that the $100 to be a ProCare member gets ya good attention from those guys.
Would still appreciate hearing about other Quad owner's experiences with their fans/noise level of their systems, just for comparison sake.
