Acer Repair Needs to cared for machines better!

I wanted to be posting nothing but good, because the website and phone support was top notch.  But the machine was 3 weeks OLD when I sent it on.. IT was flawless. I checked before a Bubble wrapped it.
But I sent in a new machine that I have treated like GOLD for repair and I got one back with new scratches and screws with the heads stripped!
I shipped this down with 2 layers of large bubble wrap.  I came back no padding wedged in cardboard so that it feels every shock the box gets in shipping!  Since the only repair they did was reseat a cable.. (which people have found doesn't usually fix the problem) Shipping it without padding is a poor choice.
Then I open it:
1) One of the screewheads on the docking station is BADLY Stripped.  USE THE RIGHT SIZE TOOL!! GEEZE
2) I machine that has been keept in a padded case came back with new scratches on the bottom of the Keyboard Dock and a 2 inch area of abrasion on the bottom
3)  and small paint wear away on the top. This comes from flipping the Dock over to work on it without propper padding on the workbench.
The machine WAS 3 weeks old and I treated with care!  ITs clear to me you probably use bins without padding and work benches are not padded nor keep clean from items that can scratch machines.
It would take me two years to aquire this level of damage on a new machine.  Its small but I take care of my stuff.  I expect you to also.
Use the correct tool sizes.. to small phillips screw drivers RUIN screws.
Pad the transport bins you move the machines around in since you use lower cost materials
Keep screws and tools out of work area so you don't scratch machines.
Ironically they noted surface scractches. Like if I write it down.. I won't get blamed. I know there were none when I shipped it.

Lesson.. Photograph every inch of your machine before sending it for repair.

Thanks, appreciate the reponse: I think right now the only issues I am 100% sure are from my repair incident are the scratchs on the bottom and stripped screw heads.  I can live with the scratches because at some point I will do it myself   But I would like it I could be sent three screws that go in the keyboard dock underside for my machine.  So I can replace the most damaged, I am concerned that at least one will be unusable if need to remove it in the future.  Like to reseat the cable...so I don't have to send it in for that kind of simple fix. Thanks

  • If I have more than one Mac, what do I need to do for the apps to be on both machines?

If I have more than one Mac, what do I need to do for the apps to be on both machines?
Also, what can be done about an app that doesn't work as promised?

If you mean iPod/iPad apps then you need to have a replica of your iTunes Library on both machines. You can backup your iTunes library - Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive - then restore it on the other computer. Also, see iTunes- How to move your music to a new computer.

  • Is there a machine I need to buy for illustrator to print on clothes?

Is there a machine I need to buy for illustrator to print on clothes?

Like Steve said, yes you need a printer ad it will depend on the type of shirts you are talking about.  A popular method is thermal transfer, traditional method is silk screen, and there are some inkjet printers that can print direct on fabric and then the pieces are sewn together post printing.  Typically you create the artwork in Illustrator and then send it to the output device ( printer ).  What type of garments are you planing to produce?

  • Do you need antivirus software for Macs?

    Hi there,
I purchased a new iMac yesterday, and I was wondering if I need antivirus software for it?  Thanks!

There are two trains of thought here. Ultimately you'll need to decide which one fits you and your usage.
In general, there are no true viruses on Mac OS X - that is, no software that can just infect your machine and self-replicate without any user involvement.
However, that's not to say that malware doesn't exist. There are several known trojans on Mac OS X - software that's advertised to do one thing but actually doesn't something else (generally malicious) behind the scenes. These applications typically use some social-engineering or other guise to fool you into thinking they're legitimate - for example, you might visit a web site that pops up a message saying you need a certain software update in order to access the site, along with a link to 'conveniently' install that software, only to find it's installing something completely different.
The difference here is that trojan applications like this require some kind of user input and usually require you to authenticate your username and password in order to install. If you only install trusted software and are smart about knowing when you should/should not need to enter your password then you're pretty immune from such tricks. If there are multiple users on the machine (especially if they all have admin access), this problem becomes compounded since it only takes one person to let down their guard.
Then, there's the third class of malware in which your machine becomes a vehicle for viruses, even if you're not affected yourself. A classic example here is email and/or distributing software that gets opened on othe platforms. For example, if you recieve a document that's infected with a Windows virus, it can and will do nothing on your machine. However, if you then forward that document to other users, they may open it thinking it's trusted (it came from someone they know), only to find it infects their machine.
This kind of problem is more prevalent in mixed-platform corporate environments, and is exascerbated when you consider that things like Microsoft Word documents and PDF files have been carriers of this kind of malware in the past.
A good anti-virus application would detect and identify these kinds of malware, even though they cannot affect your machine itself.
So, do you need anti-virus? Probably not if you're careful and don't share much content with other users (especially other users on other platforms). However, there's generally little downside to doing so.

Im planning on implementing a stand by database for my production db, and i have a few questions.-
1.- Do i need to have the same os?It depends on version which you don't tell us. For 11g no ([http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053]) for other versions basically yes, though you will likely get away with small point differences in os version). I'd argue that for best practice for physical standby the answer is yes, not least since you'll likely want to do role switchover as part of your operational requirements - changing OS at the same time as Role switchover just adds unnecessary complexity.
2.- Do I need a license for a standby db?
Yes. See the OLSA at [http://oraclestore.oracle.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=11365&media=os_local_license_agreement] especially
    >
Failover: Subject to the conditions that follow below, your license for the following programs, Oracle Database (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition or Standard Edition One), Oracle Database Enterprise Edition Options, Oracle Internet Application Server (Enterprise Edition, Standard Edition, Standard Edition One or Java Edition), Oracle Internet Application Server Options, Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition Plus, Business Intelligence Server Enterprise Edition, Business Intelligence (Standard Edition or Standard Edition One), WebLogic (Server Standard Edition, Server Enterprise Edition, Suite, Suite Options or Application Grid), Tuxedo and Adapters, Oracle Enterprise Repository, Entitlements Server, Entitlements Server Security Module, Directory Services, Identity Federation and those programs with “BEA” in the program name includes the right to run the licensed program(s) on an unlicensed spare computer in a failover environment for up to a total of ten separate days in any given calendar year (for example, if a failover node is down for two hours on Tuesday and three hours on Friday, it counts as two days). The above right only applies when a number of machines are arranged in a cluster and share one disk array. When the primary node fails, the failover node acts as the primary node. Once the primary node is repaired, you must switch back to the primary node. Once the failover period has exceeded ten days, the failover node must be licensed. In addition, only one failover node per clustered environment is at no charge for up to ten separate days even if multiple nodes are configured as failover. Downtime for maintenance purposes counts towards the ten separate days limitation. When licensing options on a failover environment, the options must match the number of licenses of the associated database. Additionally, when licensing by Named User Plus, the user minimums are waived on one failover node only. Any use beyond the right granted in this section must be licensed separately. In a failover environment, the same license metric must be used for the production and failover nodes when licensing a given clustered configuration.

  • Do I need to register for a GST number when I haven't sold over $30,000 worth of e-books?

    Hello,
I do not understand the Canadian Tax Form GST506E (03)
Do we register for a GST/HST number and get a BIN from the goverment, then fill the form out?
Any help here would be appreciated!

Well, the deal is that I work for a State agency where I produce videos for public consumption via our YouTube channel as well as training DVDs and some other applications.  It took me about seven years to get any money to work with (used my own personal cameras until then), and even then was given only $3000 to buy a video camera, DSLR, lighting, and teleprompter.  After a three more years of whining, they've finally decided to "resource" our production effort.
I suspect I can wrangle about a $10,000 budget, but I'm hoping I might be able to get as much as $15-20,000.  This has to buy a camera, accessories, and anything else I may need for the foreseeable future.  Renting isn't really an option and whatever I get now is probably what I'll be working with for the next 6-10 years (if I don't get a better job or hang myself before then), so I want to invest in technologies or formats that have staying power.
That's why I'm asking whether I need faster machines to handle these pro and prosumer formats.  If I need to factor new workstations or other hardware into my calculations, I'll need to plan for that now.  From what I'm reading, it seems that it'll actually take less processing power to work with intraframe compression, but this may be offset by the much larger file sizes.
By the way, I really appreciate everyone's responses.  This community has unquestionably been my most reliable resource for over fifteen years now.

  • Skype for Web (Beta) Mutil problems on Windows 10. 10041.

Is Windows 10 TP, and Internet Explorer 11 compatable with this Skype for web? (Beta). I'm tring to pin the Skype for web beta onto my taskbar. My OS is Windows 10 TP build 10041, and I'm using internet explorer 11. When i try and pin the site to the taskbar i get this message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or if one is already installed, create an association in, the default programs control panel".  The Skype web plugin in installed on my PC. I have restarted my PC, but i still get the same message. When i use the skype for web beta, i get this message:"You will need the plugin to make audio, and video calls, get the plugin".

I was unable to see your images.  I took the time to reinstall my 10 TP since the graphics crashed and even safe mode low resolution (VGA mode) didn't work and on top of that I had no restore points.  After I updated my machine to your build I could see what was occurring.   Skype for web beta works just fine in that build for me.  I was able to call my other machine with video and audio which is surprising because my onboard camera worked without having to do the same manipulations I had to do in Windows 8.1.   I generally never pin items to my taskbar in any OS but these are my observations: 1.   Items pinned to the taskbar have a .website extension.  Even though it has IE defined as the default program, it is apparent to me that the pinning portion of the taskbar is broken for now in that build of Windows 10.  The error happens with every pinned website that I tried so that means it's a Technical preview bug and not a Skype for Web beta one.  Not surprising since it's not a released OS. 2.  If you want it to work you should create a shortcut (.url) to http://web.skype.com and no other version of that url (unless it contains login.skype.com) since you will skip authentication causing it to error out with an "oops".  Even if you were to grab a working .website shortcut and pin that to your taskbar, it still wouldn't work since pinning is broken. 3.  You can pin the .URL shortcut by dragging it to the taskbar and it will pin itself as a child process of Internet Explorer. 4.  If the plugin isn't working make sure that you are using IE and not some other browser.  I personally haven't tested it in other browsers but that could be the issue. 5.  Make sure the Windows firewall or any other security software isn't blocking the plugin install or execution.

  • Should I back up my laptop when upgrading for the beta

I have a 2010 i7 2.66 GHz macbook pro. I have never backed it up because I don't have the money to buy an external hard drive. I really want to participate in the OSX Yosemite beta program. I am always a fan of new OS's and would like to try it out. How ever, I have some video games I have downloaded and music and my garage band projects. I really dont want to start over. If I try out for the beta will I lose everything on my computer? FYI I am downloading from apples official website so it is completely legal. Thanks in advance.

I have 320 gbs on my current internal, so Im looking for a way to just save all of my pictures and songs. I have a lot of music and a lot of pictures. My hard drive I bought with the computer needs to be replaced because I will really need a lot more. What is the difference between a SSD (which I assume means Solid Slate Drive) and HDD (Which I have no idea what that means.)
Your internal storage has 320GB, but drives that small aren't common anymore. The minimum price for external drives of various sizes is around $65-70. What I mean by that is you might as well get a 1TB (1000GB) drive for backup, because if you buy a smaller one it's not going to be that much cheaper than the 1TB these days. Here is an example - Western Digital 1TB external - the 500GB version only saves you $10. If you are really truly strapped for cash then I guess you could save the $10 and get the 500GB, because it's still big enough to back you up. But $10 more doubles the size to 1TB. The extra capacity would let Time Machine save more versions of your backups going back further in time.
Up to now most internal storage has been HDD (hard disk drive). It spins fast, moving parts means more prone to failure. The industry is transitioning to SSD (Solid State Drive). SSD has no moving parts so it is more reliable, and SSD is also many times faster than an HDD. All new Apple laptops use SSD.
But I don't know why you are being told to get an SSD, because if you are low on money you can get the same capacity for much less. Above I linked to a 1TB HDD for $70. An SSD version of that would cost almost $600...8x as much as the same size HDD! Maybe a little less if you put it together yourself, but you wouldn't really save that much. Forget about the SSD for now because it would not speed up your backup. You would be unable to take advantage of the SSD's speed because the transfer speed between the two drives would be limited by the fact that your current internal HDD is unable to feed data at the speed that the SSD can take it.
SSDs are fantastic, I just ordered one myself to upgrade in my MacBook Pro. But they are not practical for someone on such a tight budget. Better to wait until the technology matures and the price comes down more. For now, save your money and get an external HDD.
Other answers: I don't know about the screws. A store like ifixit.com, which stocks Mac parts, may have some if your computer store doesn't. Also, I would not recommend an online backup service for your immediate purpose for a couple of reasons: It would take you weeks to upload your hundreds of GB, and you would not be able to quickly reconstruct your bootable system from it. An online backup is more of a supplement to an immediately usable local backup, better for restoring individual files, not entire disks.

  • Migration Assistant says it needs 221978913 gb for one user folder

I am attempting to migrate a colleague of mine from a PowerMac G5 2.0 DP running 10.4.8 to a Mac Pro 2x2.66 machine running 10.4.8 as well.
I have the old machine hooked up via a firewire cable and idling in target disk mode. On the new machine I login as an user with administrative rights, start up the migration assistant and let it calculate (takes about 5 minutes). Then it says that it needs 221978913 gb for one of the user folders (the one basically being used and needing to migrate). Obviously this isn't correct. The user folder is pretty big (about 110gb) but definitely not 221978913 gb. Everything else such as Applications or the guest user account is the correct size.
What do I need to do to make this work? I have a feeling its an alias pointing to itself or something like that, but the guy has thousands of files and projects in his folder... there's gotta be a quick and dirty way to find something like that (perhaps a find command or applescript).
    Thanks guys,
    Yvo

    Hi Yvo:
I've seen outlandish size estimates like that when the directory is messed up; the computer basically doesn't know where the files begin and end, and it comes up with some huge number for the size of the folder.
Try using Disk Utility to Repair Disk on the G5. If it makes any repairs, try again until it finds no errors. Then try running the migration assistant again and see what it says.
    Good luck,
    Andrew Penner

If a program is not showing on the Cloud screen, it is most likely because your computer does not meet the specifications
FOR EXAMPLE, Premiere Pro requires a 64bit computer - Not all apps displayed for download | Creative Cloud desktop app, Adobe Application Manager

Does anyone know if there's a way to change the questions themselves?  (Frankly, they have to be the most ridiculous security questions I've ever seen.  A good security question should be one that you'll have no problem remembering the answer to, even if you're asked years later.  To answer one from the third batch, I'd have to make something up, which makes it unlikely I'll remember the answer later.  And I certainly don't want to have to write the answers down somewhere.)

  • HT201209 How to get an itunes gift card code, no need to wait for shipping

    Good day to all,
I want to get an itunes gift card just to download whatsapp on my iphone 3gs. I have my credit card but the billing address is in Haiti, unfortunately Haiti is not in your list of  countries. How can I get itunes gift card code immediately in order to download that application? No need to wait for shipping, just want to have the code to add it to my apple account.
If you have a better solution, it's welcome.
Thank you in advance for your reply

Sorry, but you can't, if you live in Haiti. As you say yourself, there is no iTunes Store for Haiti and you are not allowed to use the iTunes Store of any other country.
If you live in a country where there is an iTunes Store, check to see if Apple sells physical gift cards in your country and if so purchase and redeem one of those. There is no way to purchase an electronic gift certificate from Apple without a credit card from the country whose iTunes Store you wish to use.
    Regards.

  • Advice needed on monitor for Photoshop and Lightroom use

Hi. I am aserious amature photographer wishing to move to the next level and sell some of my work.
I just had a custom pc built to work with the new copies of Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3 I bought (lots or RAM and HD space, ssd, etc....)
The last piece of my system is to purchase a monitor. I want to be somewhere in the better then Best Buy but less than NEC/Eizo range in price, or between $500 - $900. I have worked with cameras since the early 80's and moved to digital several years ago but the only post processing I have done is with Photoshop Elements.  I would be doing mostly prints to sell but also need to have a web site to do so. Will also use the pc for daily net surfing... but do not game or watch a lot of video on the pc.
Being really new to this whole process I have a few questions.
The first thing I need to decide is whether I need to look for a wide gamut display or not.
I realize the whole chain must be 10 bit (Adobe -OS - graphics driver - graphics card - display port.
I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3, Win7 64 bit, Zotac ZT 50701 10M video card (which uses GeForce GTX 560  fermi and an nvidia chipset. It does have displayport). I am having a hard time determining whether my video card actually supports wide gamut (10bit).
Standard vs Wide Gamut? Is wide gamut important enough to deal with the issues it brings (calibration, viewing things other than PS and LR or color managed, which appear to be rare?) Is sRGB good enough for most prints (don't do fine art, mostly nature and portraits but starting to do some HRD things). If wide gamut is the way to go I have no problem with that and have the time to learn about calibration, color management, etc... But I also want to make sure the juice is worth the squeeze.
24" vs 27"? Is there any advantage to one or the other when editing photos?
IPS vs PLS? I realize they are similar but are there differences worth noting?
Glossy vs Matte Anti-Glare? seems to be a lot of comments regarding the anti-glare coating, mostly poor. Yet I can see issues using a glossy screen in my study with a window to my back.
One manufacturer vs another? I realize Eizo, NEC and LaCie are at the top of the heap. But with my budget, after upgrading my pc and camera equipment, I can't make that work now. So I need to choose from the next group down (Dell, HP, Samsung, Asus...)
One or two monitors? It looks like many (mid-grade) wide gamut monitors do a lousy job of displaying anything but color managed sites. Is that necessarily true of all the mid-grades? Or can some be used for graphics but as well for routine net surfing, MS Office, etc...? Or am I better off getting two monitors, one for graphics and one for the rest? That would pretty much limit me to 24" or less given my budget (used to using a Dell 21" TN monitor that oddly crapped out just as my new pc was done).
The more I read reviews the more confusing it gets. There seems to be a difference of opinion even among pros on whether to go wide gamut or stick with an easier sRGB. Realizing a standard gamut monitor would be cheaper, I do want to make the right decision up front, given my budget.
The one thing I have found astounding is that there is nowhere to actually see many of the monitors I am considering. We live in Nashville TN but my wife is from Atlanta Ga so we drove there a few weeks ago to visit family and for me to visit monitor shops. Even the largest ones there (Fry's and Microcenter) had minimal IPS monitors, a few Dells and HP's. The knowledge of their sales folks was so poor I finally gave up. Felt bad about this until I posted this on another board and got a reply from a guy in LA (second largest city in the US) that he wanted to see a particular monitor and there was no place even there to do so.
Anyhow, here is what I have considered:
24" Wide Gamut: Dell U2410 and Asus PA246Q. Dells appear to be good IF you get a good one. The Asus appears to be a clone of the Dell that gets a lot of good press.
27" Wide Gamut: Dell U2711 that also gets a ton of good reviews
24: Standard Gamut: Dell U2412 and HP ZR2440.
27" Standard Gamut: Samsung S27A850D and Apple Cinema- The Samsung uses PLS technology versus IPS while the Apple is a glossy screen that will work with a pc.
Sorry for the long post. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Not trying to talk you out of setting up a 10 bit pipeline, but it's still not very mature, and it really isn't a necessity to get a good editing experience.
Personally I find advantage in using two 4:3 ratio monitors for Photoshop work.  All my panels are on the right monitor, while pretty much the entire left one shows the Photoshop main window and the working canvas space.  My desktop is 3200 x 1200 pixels overall, and I find having the panels remain visible all the time is important.
Regarding whether a wide gamut is important...  Will you be printing to devices that deliver a wide gamut?  What other things will you be doing with your system?
It's not a no-brainer whether a wider gamut monitor is always "better" for everything, since it can accentuate the differences between the output from color-managed and non-color-managed applications, and it's definitely true that not everything is color-managed.  With a monitor that's close to sRGB, for example, you might find Internet Explorer output acceptable, while using a wide gamut monitor will result in garishly oversaturated IE displays.  On the other hand, FireFox (with a settings tweak) seems to get color management right, so there is an alternative.
I think, as John has implied above, you should work to get your head completely around how color-management works, soup to nuts.  If you don't, there will always be things that are a mystery or which surprise you at the wrong times.  Being able to order a print and have it come back with the expected color can be very important, as you might imagine.

  • Need extra storage for photos for my ipad ...

I need extra storage for my ipad to store photos on ... I have so far been looking at the Airport Time Capsule & Seagate Wireless Plus.
    Can anyone recommend any? Thanks

If you need to offload photos as you have too many, the best way is to plug the iPad into you computer running Mac OSX and dump them into iphoto.
If you want to use something by wireless, without a computer then any network connected hard disk will work much the same. You cannot use file storage directly anyway.. you need to load a file app to start with.
I think use whichever works out the cheaper for you.
Do note the TC is really not designed to do this job and if you already use the TC for Time Machine it is messy loading files onto it. This is apparently a new purchase so you are not using the TC at all..
The TC lacks a method to back itself up.. And this is one of its great weaknesses.. if the TC fails.. and they all fail at some point. How are you going to recover those photos?? From iPad you will not have the tools needed to do backups of the TC to another location.
I have no idea if the seagate has built in proper backup but I would find out.

  • HT3775 I NEED I TUNES FOR A 64 BIT PC. OPERATING SYSTEM IS WINDOWS 8, NON TOUCH SCREEN. WHICH IS THE ABSOLUTELY BEST WAY TO GET ITUNES OPERATING CORRECTLY ON MY PC????//I HAVE TRIED SEVERAL THINGS, NONE OF WHICH ARE WORKING. IS ITUNES DELIBERATELY EXCLUDI

I cannot get itunes to work/install on myPC. I am running windows 8 in a 64 bit machine. I also want to purchase books via itunes for my Nook. Are you deliberately excluding PC owners so we cannot use ituens on our computers???? I have selected a community but have no idea what community I should be working with. Can somone explai these communities to me? Also. you don't allow much time to go thru the sign up process. I had to start over SEVERAL times as you kept timing me out. Jesus...when people are signing up for the first time, we have no idea of the questions that will be asked. Give us a break and give us time to sign up. Not everone is disability free and able to go thru your process quickly...you are NOT user friendly. You should be for people who are wanting to join your community. I used to want an Apple product but now that  I have had first hand experience with your web page, I think I will probably stay away from Apple products. VERY DISAPPOINTING
