  • Apple TV home sharing through external hard drive.

Is it possible to take my movies that are on an external hard drive and hook it to a router so that my computer does not have to be on to home share?

If you intend to use home sharing, that is done through iTunes. The content can reside on your external, but it would need to be pointed to iTunes. The computer would need to be on for it to be available for Apple TV.
The scenario you are looking at would involve looking for a 3rd party app and using an IOS device to transmit the content to Apple TV, and it may not be reliable.

  • Looking for best 1tb external hard drive for 2008 I-mac?

Hi, I'm currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, but might upgrade to Mavericks at some point. I have 3GB of RAM, but will upgrade to 6GB soon.  I would like to get a reliable 1tb external hard drive.  It's only for the desktop, so it doesn't have to be portable, although it might be nice to have a smaller one.  I don't have much money to spend (not more than 90$), so if I could get a good one that doesn't cost too much (perhaps on sale?) that would be perfect.  I mainly need it to store a lot of photos and videos, nothing fancy.  What would be a good drive, or reliable company?  I thought about this one: WD My Passport for Mac 1TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 (WDBLUZ0010BSL-NESN) which I found on sale at 59,99$.  It appeared to have a lot of good reviews on other sites, but many bad ones on this one, so I'm not sure.  It also says on here that it needs 10.7 or higher to work, although someone else said it would work with Snow Leopard as well.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Very easy. Plug in the drive, open Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder which in the Applications folder).
Select the drive in the sidebar. Select the partition tab, and select the number of partitions (one is fine).
Click options at the bottom of the screen. Select GUID.
Make sure the format is Mac OS Extended (journaled), name the disk and click apply.
It takes longer to type how to do it than to actually do it.

  • What is FireWire and what FireWire adapter do I need to use FireWire 800 for my portable external hard drive ?

Hi guys, I'm new to Mac. I have a MacBook Pro 13" (late 2011) with Lion OS and Parallels 7 (Windows 7). My understanding is that there is FireWire connection / extension built in to the MacBook Pro already. I also have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive 750GB USB2.0 and 3.0 (that can be used for PC and Mac). It states that the portable external harddrive is FireWire 800 compatible. The questions are (1) how does FireWire works ? (2) how do I use or activate FireWire 800 ? (3) is there any setup / setting changes I need to on my MacBook Pro ? (4) what FireWire adapter do I need to purchase to connect my portable external harddrive to my MacBook Pro ? Is it expensive ?
I read a few articles online but they are too technical for me. They mentioned something about FireWire adapter with 6 pins or 9 pins. Not sure what that means. I'm totally confused. So any help, advise or guidance will be much appreciated. In Layman's term would be better. Thanks.
How about Thunderbolt ? Is it compatible with the above external portable hard drive mentioned ? Do I need a Thunderbolt adapter for it ? How do I activate or use Thunderbolt ?

    Thanks, Clinton and Alberto.
The below link is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable external hard drive (product code STAA750302) that I have. It states that it features USB 2.0 or 3.0 plug–and–play connectivity and easily upgradeable to USB 3.0, FireWire 800 or eSATA. It only comes with a 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable.
    http://www.seagate.com/au/en/external-hard-drives/portable-hard-drives/standard/ goflex/
Based on the above, my understanding is that I need to buy a FireWire 800 adapter to connect to the portable external hard drive so that I can use FireWire 800 with my MacBook Pro. Is this correct ? Do I need to get a separate cable as well or can I just use the 18-inch USB 3.0 / 2.0 backward compatible cable that was provided in the box ? If so, what sort of FireWire 800 cable do I need to get ? 9 pin to 9 pin ? 6 pin to 9 pin ? Or 4 pin to 9 pin ?

  • Exclamation Point for Songs on External Hard Drive

This should be pretty straight-forward, but I've been searching for the past two hours and haven't found anything to solve this issue.
I have my entire music library (35,000+ songs/320 GB) on an external hard drive. I plugged my iPod into my PC to charge it and didn't have the external hard drive connected and the message *"Some of the items in the iTunes library, including [song name], were not copied to the iPod [ipod name] because they could not be found"* and every song that was in my playlist shows the dreaded "!" exclamation point next to it.
I've disconnected the iPod, connected the external hard drive, and reconnected the iPod only to get the same results.
How do I get iTunes to remap all the exclamation point songs without:
    1. Consolidating my entire library to my PCs hard drive (which doesn't have enough storage)?
    2. Manually re-mapping hundreds/thousands of songs?
    3. Deleting and re-adding every song in my library (takes 4-6 hours)?
Some additional details (just in case):
    Windows XP
    iTunes 9.1.1.12
    3rd Generation 4GB Nano
There has to be a simple way to address this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies and the detailed information. I appreciate the assistance but remapping the drive letter won't help. My iTunes library is still completely visible and per the XML file, the library location (not the physical music file location) is on the C: drive, which is correct. For whatever reason, when iTunes couldn't find the hundreds/thousands of songs that were on my playlist it changed the file path of just those files to file://localhost/E: from the original file path (which was F:/music/...). The external HD is still mapped to F:.
Any file that wasn't on my playlist is fine. What I need to know is how to get iTunes to find those hundreds/thousands of songs that were on my playlist and get rid of the exclamation point. This should be a pretty cut and dried case:
    1. iTunes recognizes all the file paths of all the songs on the external HD
    2. I plug in my iPod without the hard drive plugged in
    3. All the songs on my playlist (and only the songs on my playlist) are now flagged with an exclamation point and won't open unless I physically browse for them.
    4. All other songs not on my playlist still play/synch without issue.
This is a simple situation...does anybody have a simple solution? I can't be the only person out there that is encountering this.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Artwork for Videos on External Hard Drive

Hi, I have a 1.5 TB external hard drive that has movies, tv episodes, and videos on it. When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, and my external hard drive to my computer, I drag and drop the videos from the drive to my iPhone. I'd like to have artwork for the videos without storing them on my computer's hard drive. I would also like it to show on the iPhone a preview of the videos, such as a movie poster. How can I do this? Thank you in advance!!

iPhoto is not involved in moving the library - and 3GB is far below the minimum required 10GB
    To move the iphoto library
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How to Acess iPhoto Library in External Hard Drive thru Airport Extreme and iPad

My iPhoto library is currently in an external hard drive that's connected to an Airport Extreme.  I want to be able to access this library thru my iPad.  Is there any way to accomplish this?  I have spent endless hours online looking for an answer, but so far I have not found it.
Thank you so much for the help !!!

It may sound like a stretch, but there are so many people who have already solved more complex tasks than this one.
I can't believe the only solution to this problem is to use LogMeIn/GotoMyPC or other remote control applications to access the library thru my MacBook Pro.   There is also an app for iPhones called NetPortalFile and I can view the individual pictures (but it ***** because I can only see one at a time and my wife has 60,000 pics...).  Almost there with solutions, not integrated all yet that I know of and that's why I am asking.
I'll keep waiting, maybe someone has already figured it out or they are working on an app :)

  • Data recovery for operational Toshiba external hard drive

I have a Toshiba HDDR500E03X external USB hard drive that's had trouble running properly recently within Windows XP Pro environments.  It's been fine since it's purchase in 2009, but within the last week or so encountered issues being detected within device manager and explorer.  Using support.microsoft.com advice, I removed the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry entries in the following hierarchy:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
This did allow the drive to be recognized within XP, but it appears to have generated a second problem.  Now, when I look a the drive's root folder, I see what appears to be the contents of a Sony VAIO backup folder, which I believe to be a subfolder of the drive's data.  I'm not able to see photos, music, office files, etc.  I have to wonder if the registry tweak repointed the root folder to the wrong location?
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Scott

If the volume has Mac OS X installed on it, select the disk in the Disk Utility window and click the Repair Permissions button; this will correct the settings. If not, follow the instructions below:
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter /Volumes/ as the folder's location. Next, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder while keeping the Volumes folder open. Type the following into the window:
    chmod 755
followed by a space. Drag the volume in question into the Terminal window and press Enter. Log out and back in, and see if the drive reappears on your desktop; if not, use:
    sudo chown shortname
and then drag the volume back into the Terminal window, type in your administrator password, and press Enter. Log out and back in.

  • To prepare for upgrade to Yosemite; How do I back up Office 2011 for Mac to external hard drive?

Any thoughts from the community; Is it a good idea or not to upgrade my MacBook Pro?  Any help is appreciated. On my Macbook Pro to prepare for upgrade to Yosemite, I have backed up to time machine the Macintosh Hard Drive which has my applications with the exception of Office for Mac 2011.  Office for Mac is on a separate drive; how do I back up that separate drive?

If it's on a separate drive, then it would have nothing to do with installing a new OS on another drive.

  • Utility for examining my external hard drive?

    Hi folks.
I bought a 5ooMB G-Tech Mini hard drive in January. A cute lirrle thing. Nice n quiet too.
A couple of weeks later it starting having probs and corrupted some of my data. I took it back to the shop and was told there was a turnaround of about 2-3 weeks, and it would be replaced with a refurbished model. I shouldn't have accepted that.
10 weeks later, and after a lot of badgering, the replacement arrives. The first thing I notice is how incredibly noisy it is. Pretty soon there are probs. It keeps ejecting itself, or refuses to mount.
I'm about to take it back, but is there a utility that will tell me exactly what drive is in there? I suspect it's not what it should be.
    So annoying.

  • Need to reformat external hard drive for time machine?

    Hello,
We recently purchased an external hard drive for our family iMac after we had to have a new hard drive put in. We picked up a Western Digital 1tb My Book (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=725). I set up the external hd with time machine and all was fine for about a month.
An error message of "The backup volume is read only" started appearing. I attempted to repair the disk through these directions http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275#1 but when I was trying to follow the steps, I think I disconnected the external hd without dismounting it, so now I'd assume I need to reformat the external hd. I can't seem to find instructions on how to do this. Where should I look for reformatting my external hard drive?
Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • What 1Tb external hard drive should I be considering for my new 27 in iMac.

I'm going to be purchasing a new 27in iMac soon. I have begun searching online reviews for a 1TB external hard drive. I may have narrowed the search down to OWC Mercury Elite and G Technolgyand maybe LaCie. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll second the recommendation for OWC (macsales.com); I also have a couple of LaCie's - there is nothing wrong, but I do prefer the Mercury Elite.
FWIW, most external hard drives come with some sort of software - there is absolutely no need for it. I plug in a new hard drive, wait until I see the icon on the desktop, launch Disk Utility and partition/format the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and (under options) GUID partition scheme. At that point, you can decide to have one or more partitions on it depending on what you want to use it for. In any case, that process will wipe the drive clean - when finished, the new hard drive will be ready for whatever you want to use it for.
